Research

[edit]

Hi, Gobonobo! I am getting back into the swing of things for fall and wondered if you saw this new research (scroll down part way) on editor gender in WP? This may be an update to the stats you and I have used regarding inequality and editing. Take good care!Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 23:58, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have seen that paper. While I agree that a participation bias may have skewed the percentages on the 2008 editor survey, I'm not convinced that the methodology used in revisiting those statistics has necessarily resulted in a more accurate picture. Perhaps it would be best to say that, yes, there is a gender gap, and the percentage of female editors may fall in a certain range (maybe 10-16%). One earlier survey placed the number at 8.5%. It should be noted as well that these are global statistics, and the ratio is a tad better in the US.
I found Riedl's 2009 paper to be informative. Their conclusions touched on some of the gender gap-related issues that female editors may face. Specifically:
  • Female newcomers are reverted more than males
  • Females are more likely to be indefinitely blocked
  • Coverage of “female” topics is inferior to coverage of “male” topics
  • Articles with high female editor concentrations are more contentious
  • Female editors leave Wikipedia sooner than males

Estelle Ramey

[edit]

Thank you for compiling this amazing list. After a few months of sitting in my sandbox, I've finally got the start to an article for Estelle Ramey. So many fascinating biographies to be written on the list. Hope to work on more in the future. Hmlarson (talk) 05:26, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Thank you very much for starting the Estelle Ramey article. Gobōnobō + c 14:20, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great list, nice work, it is important to do these lists. The articles will be created soon or later, effort and patience! :-) emijrp (talk) 23:13, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Peggy Shaw

[edit]

Hi there, I'm creating a page for Peggy Shaw. I'm just getting it started so you might want to keep it on the list, but there is a wealth of information about her on the web so it should not be hard for me and others to fill in quickly. Thanks for the link leading me to her! Rachel.dicerbo (talk) 18:58, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Rachel.dicerbo:. Thank you for starting her article! Sorry if I gave you any edit conflicts just now. Shaw should meet notability guidelines, particularly WP:BIO and WP:ARTIST. gobonobo + c 19:52, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This list

[edit]

Hi Gobonobo, this is a great list. Have you considered moving it out of userspace? – SJ + 22:40, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sj: Just seeing your note now. You mean to Wikipedia:Gender gap red list or something similar? gobonobo + c 00:19, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree! And to think I'd never have seen this list if I hadn't clicked on your username because I was enamored with your font! Nice work. --Geekdiva (talk) 08:09, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A.L. Kathleen King

[edit]

Hi Gobonobo, don't want to dive in an edit your list, but I wanted to let you know that I wrote on article for A.L. Kathleen King, I just put her under Kathleen King. I don't know if it would be worth moving? Anyway - thanks for the thanks earlier :) Smirkybec (talk) 19:42, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Smirkybec: Feel free to edit the list anytime you'd like. I've set up redirects for the name variations. Thank you for all the work you've being doing with Irish women scientists. I plan on participating (remotely) in the upcoming WITS editathon. gobonobo + c 03:21, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant thanks so much - your list is such a wonderful resource :) Thanks for setting up the redirects, I should have thought of that! Irish women in STEM is my thing, I hope I don't run out any time soon. We'd love to have you take part on the 4th, we have another remote editor signed up already. Thanks again Smirkybec (talk) 15:54, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
