Wellington Suspension Bridge
Hi Gilderien, thank you for promoting the DYK nomination for Wellington Suspension Bridge to Prep 4. I know it's very difficult at the moment as there are not many passed nominations to work with but I think prep 4 may be on the main page at midnight UK time? I wonder if it would be possible to move it to another prep area as I will (hopefully!) be sound asleep while it makes it's appearance. I'm not sure if you are around at present so I have also posted a note about it on the DYK discussion page, I hope you don't mind. Sorry for being such a pain! SagaciousPhil - Chat 08:57, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Just an update - I managed to catch (and pester) Crisco; the hook is now in Prep 1, which will run in UK daytime. My apologies for being so much trouble ... SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:11, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, glad to see that has been sorted.--Gilderien Talk|List of good deeds 16:18, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive
Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days! In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00. At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge. |
Adoption
Hi, I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and I was looking for an adopter? I have a fair idea of how things work, but a bit more help couldn't hurt. Skolithos (talk) 00:17, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Huggle 3 beta is out - and we need more feedback!
Hey Gilderien, how are you? I am Petrb, one of huggle developers, and you are currently subscribed as a beta tester of huggle on meta (meta:Huggle/Members. You may not have noticed, but this week I released first beta precompiled installers for ubuntu and microsoft windows! Wikipedia:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta has all the links you need. So if you can, please download it, test it and report all bugs that is really what we need now. Don't forgot that as it's just a beta it's unstable and there are some known issues. Be carefull! Thank you for helping us with huggle Petrb (talk) 16:20, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

prep areas
Gilderien, the Mann hook should not run next; it was a special request for the 14th in the US, and the next set starts too soon and will be run overnight in the US. I apologize for bumping into you, but I moved it so it would run at the right time. You seem to be moving preps around: the key here is that the Mann hook does *not* go next, but some other set does. Thanks. (PS: One way to avoid collisions like this, while you're building a set, is to place the {{Inuse}} template in a set, save it, and then remove it after you're done. People usually don't work on a set when someone else has it clearly reserved.) BlueMoonset (talk) 23:06, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, you seem to have fixed it, thanks :) I tend not to use InUse, since it clogs up watchlists and I'm fine with repairing edit-conflicts, especially wrt preps.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 23:13, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Request for adoption
Hi Gilderien. I was wondering if you might be able to adopt me. I am a fairly new user looking to contribute more. I started by creating a page for a company that is notable in my sphere of research/learning PH Media Group but would like to do more. Could you please help me by providing some advice about the creation of pages because someone has questioned the NPOV on my only created page, so I would like to get a better handle on the process before creating more and get a feel for how I can make this page more neutral sounding. I would also be interested in joining your adoption school. Jenniferlever (talk) 14:01, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi, sorry I could not figure out how to create a section on your page.Anyways, I was wondering if you are willing to mentor me. I don't know how to do much, but I am willing to learn. Thanks, Dan.Danw2016 (talk) 22:37, 20 December 2013 (UTC)danw2016
Edit clashing in the DYK prep
Whoops! Looks like we nearly had an edit clash on Bowen State by-election, but all turned out well. Prep area 1 could use some more hooks, though. I'll leave it be for the moment (have real world work to do), to avoid further clashes. Thanks for helping out! -Kieran (talk) 21:55, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'll get onto it when I finish prep 4.--Gilderien Berate|List of good deeds 21:57, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi G, can you see what Ive not done? Victuallers (talk) 20:28, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Victuallers. I checked and the hook was transferred correctly, but you didn't add subst: in front of the template name so it didn't autocomplete everything - I fixed that, but the hook doesn't quite make sense - should it be publication rather than organ? --Gilderien Chat|What I've done 20:33, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
- aaah! thanks - I think you'll find that organ is OK - its an usual meaning of the word (Organ means more that just the innards of animals) but it works for me Victuallers (talk) 20:38, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 22
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Balinese textiles, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Balinese calendar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!
Hello Gilderien, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Fermanagh Mallards F.C. DYK
I have responded to your concerns at Template:Did you know nominations/Fermanagh Mallards F.C. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 12:18, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
- As it's related to the above issue... As The C of E completed the work in 2014, the article will be eligible for WikiCup points if and when it appears on the main page. J Milburn (talk) 12:46, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
- I've replied again and I've also set up a discussion thread at Wikipedia talk:Did you know. Though I really don't mind either way about it. if you do think that it is better to have "the" in the hook, I won't object. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 12:57, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
WikiCup points aren't really anything to do with the did you know project, so a thread there can't achieve much. Gilderien: I'm happy to assume good faith and say that The C of E was working on the article in the minutes leading up to midnight, but that there was also significant work afterwards. Obviously, if a user were to create multiple articles immediately after midnight, it would be clear that the user had created a number of drafts, and was trying to game the system. All such articles would be removed as ineligible. J Milburn (talk) 13:04, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter
The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
- Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
- WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
- TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
- Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
