DYK-Good Article Request for Comment
Did you know ... that since you expressed an opinion on the GA/DYK proposal last year, we invite you to contribute to a formal Request for Comment on the matter? Please see the proposal on its subpage here, or on the main DYK talk page. To add the discussion to your watchlist, click this link. Regards, Gilderien Chat|What I've done22:59, 28 July 2013 (UTC) |
- Thanks for pulling this RFC together - it's clearly presented and should hopefully give a clear answer one way or another, while previous talkpage discussions have got very bogged down. (I was surprised to see how my opinions had crystallised since last time). One thing I would suggest to publicise it a bit more - if you tag it with {{RFC}} and list it on WP:CENT it'll get onto the two main places for listing discussions. Andrew Gray (talk) 00:01, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I had forgotten to do that, thanks for reminding me .--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 00:17, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I think it would be better if you would ask people to add their rationale before (above) the !votes instead of asking editors individually after they've !voted. Mohamed CJ (talk) 01:57, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I had forgotten to do that, thanks for reminding me .--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 00:17, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- Since you requested specifically that I make an additional comment to back up my vote, I did. I doubt I wrote anything new or inspiring though. Deryck C. 16:46, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you :) --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 17:22, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
August 2013 WikiProject Christianity Newsletter
ICHTHUS |
August 2013 |
From the Editor
Welcome to the August 2013 issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter. We focus on the historical Jesus and reflect on the last month.
The project has another featured picture, The ruins of Holyrood Chapel, a digitisation of an oil-on-canvas painting. Our top-importance article, Jesus, has been nominated for Featured Article status, the discussion can be seen here; Knights of Colombus has also been nominated as a FAC.
Ecgbert (bishop) and Church architecture in Scotland have both this month achieved Good Article status.
Our project had several of its articles featured in the main page DYK section, including Hinckley Priory, Little Chapel, St Peter's Church, Ropsley, Chip Ingram, St John the Evangelist's Church, Corby Glen, Great George Street Congregational Church, St Mary's Church, Walton-on-the-Hill and Bunge church.
Our thanks go to all of those who have worked to achieve these article milestones.
Church of the month
This image, of Maillezais Cathedral and created by Selbymay was this month promoted to featured picture status.
Membership report
We would like to welcome our newest members, Thechristophermorris, Psmidi and Jchthys. Thank you all for your interest in this effort. If any members, new or not, wish any assistance, they should feel free to leave a message at the Christianity noticeboard or with me or other individual editors to request it.

THE
HISTORICAL JESUS
What was Jesus like? What did he preach? Did he claim to be the Messiah? Did he predict an apocalypse? What can we know about him outside a religious context? The Historical Jesus article discusses what can be known about Jesus with various degrees of probability. While scholars agree on the over all flow and outline of Jesus' life (his baptism by John, debated Jewish authorities, healings, and his crucifixion by Pilate) they have built various and diverging portraits of the rest of his life. These range from minimalist portraits that accept very little of the gospel accounts to maximalists who accept most of the accounts as historical.
The portraits of Jesus have at times been unwitting reflections of the researchers themselves, and Crossan once quipped that some authors "do autobiography and call it biography". However, the study of historical Jesus has made one thing clear: there is so much to learn about Jesus that the more one looks, the more there is to discover.
From the bookshelf
In this book Maurice Casey not only draws on his special expertise in the Aramaic traditions and the Q source, but provides a comprehensive review of the various approaches to the historical Jesus.
Did you know...
- ... that in 1951 Christianity was the second largest religion in the world with 500 million followers, compared to 520 million Buddhists, but by 2013 it had gained the top spot with about 2.2 billion Christians?
Calendar
This month we celebrate the feasts of St Lawrence, St Bernard, and St Augustine.

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter
We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Piotrus (submissions), Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.
Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I am sort of confused as to exactly what this is (if you don't care to explain to me further), but I don't mind you using the article. I will need to update the tornado table to MoS standards (per List of tornadoes in the 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak), probably tommorrow. But by all means go ahead. United States Man (talk) 01:18, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
- And since the articles in this project have a certain way that they are set up (it shouldn't be too hard to figure out), if you have any questions just ask either me or User:Cyclonebiskit. United States Man (talk) 01:25, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
- Well I volunteer in this program. Thank you very much, I'll give it a day or so for you to finish.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 23:42, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I will be finished by Sunday night as I am fairly busy at the moment and only able to edit periodically. United States Man (talk) 23:54, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
Its also sensible to send them a message on their talk page, just in case they miss the echo ping. :) Also, link your userpage if you want to let them see it.

Eagle Peak (Wyoming)
Kudos for your perseverance. Eagle Peak (Wyoming) is now promoted. I have expanded the Church of the month article referred in the monthly bulletin--Nvvchar. 21:18, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I knew it would get there in the end. It's now eligible for DYK, but I'll have a go at expanding it further ... since Mount Elbert has already been a DYK I didn't see the point in waiting for my RfC to finish so I have nominated it, although I think the last Geology paragraph will have to be cut dramatically.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:22, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Good Article Recruitment Notice
Hello! I just wanted to remind our recruiters (you) about some things that seem to be forgotten about during recruitments and one "minor" change in the instructions.

DYK for Eagle Peak (Wyoming)
On 3 August 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Eagle Peak (Wyoming), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Eagle Peak is the highpoint of Yellowstone National Park? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Eagle Peak (Wyoming). You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

GA RFC
This is a giant babystep toward getting GA on the main page. I am hoping that once this goes live, the DYK folks will want to jettison us off into our own space on the main page. Will you be keeping track of GAs at DYK in some way for historical purposes in case GAs do get their own main page space in the future?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 23:23, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- I hadn't really thought about it, although I suppose a request could be made for DYKhousekeepingbot to update the article with a category. Alternatively, I could add a parameter to the DYK nomination template (GA={{{no|}}} {{{if:yes<includeonly>[[Category:GA-DYK nominations]]</includeonly>}}} or however it codes to add the nomination to a category. Additional parameters ([[Category:GA-DYK nominations from {{{subst:CURRENTMONTH}}} {{{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}]]) could be added to help us keep track of nomination numbers over time.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 23:33, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- I bet within 6 months of putting this into effect we will be considering a separate section. So please keep track of GAs on the main page somehow.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 23:42, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- Also, I am not sure how this is going to work operationally. Will we wait for noms from qualifying GAs or will we try to get all of the virgin GAs on the main page. I suggest some sort of tracking system of new GAs. For WP:FOUR I get notified of all FAs that have been GAs or DYKs. The system works because by the time something becomes a FA it usually has a fully explained history in a T:AH. You won't necessarily be able to rely on the same system for GAs but there should be some way to identify all new GAs and check whether the article has been a DYK in the past (either via a DYK entry in its T:AH or a separate DYK template). Then, interested parties could check a category for all new GAs that have never been on the main page.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 23:42, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- As written, the proposal would consist from DYK's end of waiting for editors to nominate GAs as any other article. Of course, anyone is free to nominate every new GA; I suppose the project would request as a courtesy that the nominator complete a QPQ review, although in the current regime that is not strictly required. Do we have a list of GAs by promotion date? That could be useful, or I suppose I could persuade a friendly bot writer to code one updating a page with new GAs and removing them when the article title is transluded on T:DYK.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 23:53, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- I am not sure whether a list or a category would work better for this purpose.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 00:08, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- A list would be less disruptive to the new GAs. It would (should) be easier to automate, and if it was a page in userspace it wouldn't even need approval.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 00:10, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- My main point is that once we are authorized to take up DYK space, we want to take up as much space as possible so that we can begin to justify our own space. Using every eligible GA will do this.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 00:33, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- That would be self-defeating. Have you considered how you will manage WP:FOUR in the light of all new GAs being eligible for DYK? I have emailed you some suggestions.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 00:58, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
GA recruit?
Hi. Having just added a GA nomination I'm thinking I might help with the backlog. Am particularly interested in reviewing Ambrose Channel pilot cable. Are you available to guide me in this? ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:18, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I am heading off on holiday tomorrow morning, so I cannot help you. If you are still interesting in me teaching you the process come september, drop me a note and I will be more than happy to assist you. WRT the article you linked to, it looks fairly reasonable, apart from the lead section needs expanding (1-2 paragraphs would seem reasonable for an article of this size) and the "Cable installation and operation" needs more references.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:42, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- So the holiday template is current. Oh. Well, I think (ha) I am not entirely unacquainted in the GA criteria, and I can see several points that might be tightened in that article. Would be acceptable to proceed? Or should I first enquire of another recruiter? ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:55, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Go for it If there are points that come up that you are unsure of, any of the GA recruiters will be happy to answer queries, and I'm watching the review so if I get connection I might comment.--Gilderien Chat|Contributions 21:58, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I will. This may be interesting. Give me a yell if I start drifting. ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 22:29, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
