Freo Prison

[edit]

Hey Peter, many thanks for the feedback, really nice to know you approve, thanks for making the effort. I was there a while back but think I might have to go back and see the tunnels. Who knows you may have been my guide - tall N. Irish bloke with a basball cap on? You get one like that a week I'm sure.... Anyways, I got picked out as the intelligent machievellian head prisoner to demonstrate how the politics worked, which I enjoyed I must say. Helps bring the story to life. Since I wrote the article and did a bit of research though I realised there were a few bits I'd missed and would like to see/ask about, not sure when I'll get the chance though. All the best SeanMack 15:24, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC).

Hey again. Must apologise for taking so long to get back to you, life has been even more hectic than usual lately - new baby - need I say more.. Anyway just wanted to say thanks for the offer, it's appreciated, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to get down there. Hopefully I will get the chance (before the end of the year!), it would definitely be good to say hello. Cheers Peter. Sean.

Welcome

Re: Catalpa rescue

[edit]

Thanks for the heads-up; I'll definitely come down and see the exhibition. Catalpa rescue was actually already written by the time I got to it; I just tweeked it a bit. I wrote the article on O'Reilly though, from a book that I bought from the Fremantle Prison Shop. I thought your image was great.

Actually there is a Wikipedia article on one of the escaped Fenians; see James Wilson (Irish Nationalist). It would be great if you could add an image there. If I recall correctly, one of the chapters of "The Brand on his Coat" by Rica Erickson contains biographies of a number of the Wild Geese. If so, I might eventually write articles on the other escapees, and then you'll have an excuse to upload the other images.

Keep up the good work. Hesperian 06:20, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Round House

[edit]

Hi Pete, I gave Snotty/Drew a copy of an 1880's(?) view of the roundhouse, and said he could do what he liked with it,maybe we should get him to add to the article with the new photo? Anyway I saw your extra cats for Macquarie Harbour Penal Station ( I had a few spats with ambi about appropriate titles for west coast tassie articles, I used to live in Queenstown, so let her have her way with it, but...) good on you and thank you. Keep up the good work! SatuSuro 14:11, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey we all need the encouragement! If you are doing more work on the round house art that would be enough to justify putting the old photo in with the art as well!! SatuSuro 14:53, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bushrangers

[edit]

Nice work on the bushrangers. If you're interested, Captain Thunderbolt desperately needs a total rewrite. I think it is possibly the worst Wikipedia article I've ever seen. Drew (Hesperian) 01:48, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Thunderbolt

[edit]

Thanks for your encouragement, and you edits, I`m learning all the time, Agreed Thunderbolt article is a ramble, woefully opinionated, but someone seems very passionate about the subject, it would be a shame to discourage them so perhaps a new page, Frederick Ward and edit cats around this. What do you think? Btw still workin on getting those photos, do you have one of the Roundhouse? Ghostieguide 02:55, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forking articles in that way is considered a no-no on Wikipedia. The person who wrote the current article, Barry Sinclair, already has a website so rewriting the Wikipedia article wouldn't destroy all his good work. I uploaded an image of the Round House to Round House last week. By the way, I've written little articles on three more convicts this week: George Sadler, John Hislop and Abraham Jennison. Drew (Hesperian) 03:16, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fremantle Prison (again)

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your contributions to the Fremantle Prison article. I'm aiming to bring this article up to featured article status, and as you are a tour guide at the prison, I thought you might be interesting in helping? I'm in Victoria, two states away :(. The prison website is fantasic however for any research. A credit to the author there. -- Longhair 12:39, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're all great. I'll see what I can use. Any more you have can come in time, there's no need to overload the article with them all although we can create a supplementary section if needed. Quality is good. It seems like a very interesting place to both work and visit. -- Longhair 14:03, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey again Peter, nice collaboration on the article. I had a look at a few featured articles there and thought that audio versions are a great addition to articles. I reckon that with your experience you would do a better job than anyone else. Is it something you would be interested in doing if we get to a point where we are happy with the stability of the article? Regards. SeanMack 03:30, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Convict photos

[edit]

Hi Peter, I saw your comment on Pfctdayelise' talk page: "I am continually on the look out for old photos relating to the convict era". I've got two pointers for you:

  1. The NYPLDigital Gallery has the Mountjoy Prison photograph collection online. Mountjoy Prison was a clearing house for political prisoners, and all the fenians that were transported to Western Australia did time there.
  2. I've just uploaded Image:James Elphinstone Roe.png and I'm working on an article on him at User:Hesperian/Sandbox. Feel free to make other use of the image if you want.

Drew (Hesperian) 00:34, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing... Thank you so much Drew, A great resource.Ghostieguide 01:59, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I just realised I didn't pass you an URL. Obviously you found it. The easiest point of access is here. Drew (Hesperian) 02:08, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: your Martin Cash request, I did it yesterday but I forgot to tell you. It's great to see you're putting so many of the Mountjoy convict images on Commons. I haven't forgotten my promise to write articles on some of the Fenians. I'll get to it eventually. Drew (Hesperian) 02:50, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, nice to meet you! I just find my pictures on http://www.picturesaustralia.org/ I think it is. Anything convict-era is safely PD. Looks like you've had some interesting jobs!! Thanks for adding to the commons:convicts page, too. :) pfctdayelise 11:50, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

convict building?

[edit]

I don't suppose you know anything about the old building on the corner of Knutsford and Amherst streets in Fremantle? It intrigues me because it has "bond store" and "free store" painted on the side, which makes me think it hails from the convict era. Drew (Hesperian) 03:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wilson / Thomas

[edit]

Sorry to keep bugging you. I noticed that on the bottom of Image:James Wilson.jpg it said "See James Thomas page 16", so I had a look at page 16. What do you think? Same person? Drew (Hesperian) 04:13, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hougoumont

[edit]

Both is correct. The Hougoumont loaded a number of convicts at London on 30 September 1867, then sailed around to Dover where it picked up some more convicts at Portsmouth. It departed Portsmouth on October 12. The information here that states that the Hougoumont departed London on October 12 is apparently incorrect. Drew (Hesperian) 03:17, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • How dare you steal my article!... just kidding. I was planning on writing an article on the Hougoumont this week, but it's great that you've beaten me to it. One of the most interesting things about the Hougoumont is there were many more literate convicts on board than usual, because of all the Fenians. So there are three different diaries of the voyage extant: J. S. Casey's, Denis Cashman's and Thomas McCarthy Fennell's. Drew (Hesperian) 05:05, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recommend the Fennell memoirs; they were written many years afterwards and contain a lot of errors. Also very flowery language, frustrating to read: this is how he accuses some of his fellow convicts of being wankers:

But it recoils from horror from further mental suggestions or investigation as to the cause, dare not sift it through fear of the contagion. But it is to be greatly feared that those forbidding acutriments are compelled to be worn on account of some unmasterly passion, some iniquitous indulgence some bodily debasement revolting to the senses and unfit for mention.

Drew (Hesperian) 06:13, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I received a friendly email from one of the editors of this book, who saw this page and was curious about the errors I had found. I thought it best that I clarify: the errors are errors of fact (e.g. dates, places) in Fennell's original manuscript. In many cases these are footnoted by the editors. I wasn't suggesting that the editors had made errors. Hesperian 03:53, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HMS

[edit]

After conducting a little more research, I think it was a mistake to move the article to HMS Hougoumont. As far as I can tell, it was a chartered ship. It wasn't unusual for the British Government to charter ships; see for example Parmelia (barque). Only ships owned by "Her Majesty" were named "Her Majesty's Ship", and I can't find any evidence that this is the case for the Hougoumont. Indeed, I think it's unlikely that Britain would lend one of Her Majesty's Ships to France for use in a war that Britain was herself involved in. The only Google hits for "hms hougoumont" are Wikipedia and its scrapers. How do you feel about moving it back to Hougoumont (ship)? Drew (Hesperian) 01:59, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scindian

[edit]

Thanks. Yep, I'll participate. I've got Bateson's The Convict Ships on request at Fremantle library, and hopefully I'll have it in a couple of days. I've got Scindian on my watchlist, so I'll notice when you make a start. Hesperian 02:51, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if I mentioned I've been collating convict articles against their ships at User:Hesperian/Notes, and have now started greying out ships as the articles are created. Now that you've joined me in working on convict stuff, I will turn it into a more general project page. If you find it useful, feel free to edit it as you see fit it. Hesperian 03:05, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it's now more of a project page, listing articles for creation, stubs needing expansion, etc. If we only had one more convict fanatic, I'd turn it into a fully fledged Wikiproject. Hesperian 03:43, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I'm interested; keep me posted. I live a bit inland from Freo, and ride my pushbike to and from Freo most weekdays. Actually I ride down Knutsford so I guess I ride past your front door twice a day. Hesperian 03:19, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fremantle Prison

[edit]

Hi. You corrected my intro paragraph in Fremantle Prison to say "It closed as a prison in 1991...". The source I used for 1990 was further down the page under Closure: "Fremantle Prison was decommissioned on 8 November 1990." Either one is wrong, or the discrepancy needs an explanation that it was decomissioned, but still help prisoners for another three months or something. Do you know if we have a picture of art by someone mentioned in the text to put next to the Prison art section in place of the dragons? --Scott Davis Talk 03:59, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I didn't take an interest quick enough to nudge it over the line to FA. My watchlist has grown too big, and it's all I can do to keep up lately, without checking other things like Australian FA candidates or writing new articles. --Scott Davis Talk 06:56, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GG. I've had a go at expanding the above article which you created. If you've got time, I'd be grateful for a review. I'm sorry to say that I replaced the photo you took with my own, which IMO is better ;-) I hope you won't be offended. Regards -- I@ntalk 04:29, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RR

[edit]

GG, coincidentally I was looking there a few days ago - mainly to do with aircraft engines (which is at Rolls-Royce plc). The company structure and use of the name is confusing and there is a disambig page at Rolls-Royce (disambiguation) which explains it all fairly well. The BMW subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars holds the license to produce cars badged as such. I'm not clear what could be done to improve it. -- I@n 01:29, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see what your saying and I agree. I added {{mergeto}} and {{mergefrom}} flags on the 2 articles to see if there's any consensus. -- I@n 02:29, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Georgette

[edit]

Wow! You're quite an artist! I'm very impressed.

If you based the work on another image, then it is a derivative work for which copyright is shared by you and the copyright holder of the original. If the original is an contemporary (i.e. 1870s) drawing, then it is obviously in the public domain, and you are free to license your IP in the picture any way you like. But if the original is a recent artwork that is still under copyright, then this image can't be released under the GFDL unless both you and the other copyright holder agree.

Regarding your particular choice of licence, permit me to quote the wise words of Pfctdayelise:

If you would like to require that you be attributed for any use of the image, use CC-BY-2.5.
If you would like to require that you be attributed for any use of the image AND that any derivative work (eg crop or colour balance or even part of a larger work) also has to be released under a free license (this concept is called ShareAlike), use CC-BY-SA-2.5. 2.5 is the latest version of the Creative Commons licenses.\
...
GFDL, which Wikipedia uses for its text, has the onerous requirement that with any use of the image, a copy of the license must also be present. On the web this is OK but in print, maybe not. So I don't recommend the GFDL for images unless you dual-license with another one like a Creative Commons listed above.

I reverted your edit to Battlefield 2142

[edit]

Somehow your edit was able to remove everything after maps and before see also. I don't know how you managed to do that, especially without it being apparent in your edit, but the version history makes the difference clear. Compare the version before your edit: http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Battlefield_2142&oldid=82580622 to the version after your edit: http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Battlefield_2142&oldid=82589408

I'm pretty sure this was unintentional, but I ask that you preview your edits in the future to keep these sorts of things from happening. -NorsemanII 09:13, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sybil Grant

[edit]

I don't think so. There really was a Lady Sybil Grant, who was the daughter of the 5th Earl of Rosebery and his wife Hannah Primrose, who inherited his papers on his death and donated them on. Whether there is any hoax material in there, e.g. the megaphone story, I couldn't say. Hesperian 11:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the Fremantle references were unsupported, since removed. some of the other claims are hard to confrim from available sources, the main source isnt clearly identified to be able to confirm but some aprts are real the publications do exist. There are also publications from a Lady Sybil Primrose but she would have 15-16 at the time, these arent quoted in the article anyway. While there still doubt on some claims, other are sufficiently veriafiable for the article stand. Gnangarra 14:50, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Sorry for my late reply. I've been somewhat busy offline in the real life world :) I thought Rene Rivkin was included in the article on Crime in Australia once upon a time. He's possibly been removed. I have no objection to seeing him listed there. Rivkin was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for insider trading dealings before his death; a sentence that created much controversy if I recall correctly due to it's periodic nature (in other words, weekend detention). There was also an incident whereby photographs were taken using a mobile phone whilst his sentence was being served.

You might also wish to take notice of the discussion against labelling him as a criminal which is located at Talk:Rene Rivkin in case you find any objections. -- Longhair\talk 01:27, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The ref is Extraordinary Popular Delusion and the Madness of Crowds by Mackay. Will return with correct title and excerpt, if any!? It was written shortly after SRM which may have only been in dicussed in modern intro. Cp. South Sea Bubble for early investmest fraud and mass psychology. A good read by progressive thinker of time, anyway. I have pooled together some web stuff and will flesh out article. Keep up the good work and thanks for leads to this and other pages. Fred 15:33, 23 December 2006 (UTC) null[reply]

You're almost there. What a lead should do is summarize each major section of the artilce. Currently, the lead is way too skimpy. A rule of thumb is that at least one sentence, more if needed, on each section should be in the lead. Since you have 5 text sections, there should be at least 5 sentences in the lead and you only have 2. So far nice work, and thanks for improving wiki articles.Sumoeagle179 12:10, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about this - I wrote the article originally but didn't inline the references. I think it is my responsibility to inline the references now, as I'm the only person who knows what material I used where. I should have put some effort into it by now but have been putting it off because I don't like the GA process. I'll get to it this week. Hesperian 23:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have information that he became Surveyor General later, can you update the list at Surveyor General of Western Australia please? Hesperian 01:17, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. Have added Drake-Brockman to the list. Hesperian 00:06, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support on that. I think that there's at least 3 or 4 locations in freo - ther's the alkimos and the margaret river pub - do you know any other well documented ones at all ? SatuSuro 14:47, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
