- Shreyas2710, unfortunately I am not a worker on Google so I cannot do that request. Google only displays the first sentence, however don't make that line in the first sentence just so that it can be displayed on the Google webpage-- I don't even see what's important. I really love how his music has helped you get through life-- that's the point of music-- but to give tribute to him is not limited to having that line displayed on the Google webpage. GeraldWL 17:06, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
ok i understand that but if google displays only the first sentence then how so many people have more than 1 sentence below their name on the webpage for example Shawn Corey Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, is an American rapper, songwriter, record executive, businessman, media proprietor, and record producer. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop artists in history these are 2 sentences — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shreyas2710 (talk • contribs) 17:13, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
- Shreyas2710, that's all up to Google to decide, I don't work for Google and don't understand how they do embedding. You probably don't have to worry much about it. Also, I reverted two of your edits on Jay-Z due to WP:NPOV-- "he is one of the greatest rapper of all time" is biased, and it must be noted that sources think he is, not that he is the best-- different people have different thoughts on if he is actually the "greatest". Hello, again. Pointing out the obvious fact that my signature is quite similar to yours, except for the fact that the color and name is changed, I would like to ask if this is fine? Since I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and custom signatures are definitely not my cup of tea. SenatorLEVI 06:30, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- SenatorLEVI, hey there. Copying others' signatures is so fine, in fact there is a page where users gave signature codes for people to use. If they're not your cup of tea, custom signs are optional and you can use the default too-- it doesn't degrade your integrity. GeraldWL 06:36, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- I think the right word I should've used is impersonating. Thanks anyway. SenatorLEVI 07:33, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
Draft
Hi Gerald, Thanks for reviewing. Regarding citation , Would you explain what a 'lead' is please ? And also, an example of a statement where I don;t currently have citation ? Many thanks. Your help is much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newreaders (talk • contribs) 14:06, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
- Newreaders, a lead is not related to citations. They are the summary of an article; in your draft's case, "Virginia Lesley MacNaughton is an English singer songwriter from Lincolnshire (born 24 October, 1969)" is the lead. A lead can be accompanied by an infobox, a box of general information about the article-- basically a boxed summary. Your current draft lead is not formatted correctly; have a look at several Wikipedia biographies as to how a person lead is like.
- There are a lot of sentences in your article which does not have citations. You can see them with the "citation needed" tags. Other sentences needing citations are:
-
- "MacNaughton has opened shows for James Yorkston, Glenn Tilbrook (Shepherd's Bush Empire), Bob Geldof, Tom McRae and in 2004 joined Lost Highway artist, Fionn Regan as support on his Irish tour."
- "Edinburgh Fringe - 8 nights at Gilded Balloon, 2001 and York Barbican, YLAF, 2003"
- "In October 2020, MacNaughton reunited with William Jackson to begin a third album."
- "MacNaughton is among Bretton Hall College alumni which include British choreographer and director Wayne McGregor and League of Gentlemen Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton."
- "The film was officially selected for the New York Independent Film Festival, Film Festival della Lessinia, shOUT Gay Film Festival, Newcastle, Australia and was nominated Best Feature for Basel Film Prize in 2012."
- and the entire discography section.
- Additionally, there should be no external links in the article, except in the External links section. Career paragraph 5 is also not formatted correctly, and the Discography section is not formatted correctly (they must use a bulleted list, as you can see in my reply. I can fix some of these myself, but your draft needs some work before it can be accepted. Good luck with that.
- If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. GeraldWL 14:20, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, I'm grateful. I'll get to work on these points. Newreaders (talk) 15:04, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Elder's Pen (talk) 13:58, 12 January 2021 (UTC) Well, Gerald, I have now ready all your recommendations, and I still have NO CLUE as to what your problem is. I removed the first line that said the MOVIE, NOT MY SYNOPSIS, WAS BASED ON A BOOK . . . and published that again . . . and again it was removed. Who did that? YOU??? I showed you very clearly why my description of complex emotions is NOT SUBJECTIVE and if you still think you are right I think you should consult with some philosophers in the field of phenomenology about the meaning and usage of the words SUBJECTIVE and OBJECTIVE . . .if a man is approaching a woman he is attracted to with intent to get to know her, our ability to pick this up in our society is NOT a SUBJECTIVE evaluation of his movements in 3-D space, or an evaluation of "objective" words which we "subjectively" evaluate as meaning . . ."interest in this woman". But you seem stuck in this mode. After I removed the first sentence which confused your stupid robot, Lugnutz, there is NO REASON to reject this simple benign description. I have read all the examples you give me and there the plots are given to the nth degree . . . almost the whole story is described. I tried not to be a "spoiler" revealing the end of the movie. Nevertheless, let me remind you of the guidelines for THEMES.
"Themes are unifying or dominant ideas and motifs in a film's elements (such as plot, dialogue, photography, and sound) conveying a position or message about life, society, and human nature. Most themes are implied rather than explicitly stated, regardless of whether their presence is the conscious intent of the producer, writer, or director. Inclusion of a treatment of a film's themes—well-sourced and cited to avoid original research—is encouraged since an article's value to a reader and its real-world context will be enhanced. A separate section is not required if it is more appropriate to place the material in the Production or reception sections."
THERE IS NOTHING IN MY DESCRIPTIONS OF THE THEMES THAT VIOLATES ANY OF THIS. So please explain to me: are YOU the person rejecting my piece? How old are you? How much education do you have? And tell me EXACTLY, as you have not done, what the problem is. Secondly, if you have a superior supervisor, can I approach them. You must understand I am not assuming I am being attacked personally. I am distressed at the "1984" and "Brave New World" control of the most simple and benign of feelings and perceptions that are being Dys-ed here. I do appreciate the human engagement with you; I deeply DO NOT appreciate the evaluation by a STUPID AI ROBOT!!! So, I look forward to hearing some rational and well-argued (not vague instructions like "do it like so and so does it there"). There is no similarity.
- Elder's Pen, can you PLEASE calm down? You asking my age, education, etc feels like you're pressuring and bullying me, as if I have NO knowledge-- a broken home, stupid motherfucker. You seeking my "superior supervisor" is just crossing the line here. So I will also cross the line. You cited the guidelines for THEMES-- NOT THE PLOT OR SYNOPSIS. THEMES have a WHOLE other section, if it needs to. Even THEY must have reliable sources to be INCLUDED. Now, have you watched the movie? I have not, and I'm sure you know more than I do. And I APPRECIATE that. But you must understand that plot summaries are the storyline of the work, NOT THE THEMES. NOR THE BOOK IT'S BASED FROM. Goddammit. And Lugnuts is not a frickin bot. They're a frickin human.
- [sigh] I'll try to calm down. And I ask you to not continue this conversation in a heated way, or else I can report you to the administrators.
- Plot summaries are the summary of a storyline of a movie. What the movie tells. I'll make an example:
- "In 1974, a woman, Lisa, was driving around the city when she was kidnapped by several masked men. She was brought to a building; witnessess saw it from afar but could not identify the specific building. Police arrived and investigated every building in that street, but could not find it. Several months pass, and Lisa, as well as the men, were never found. The case is declared closed."
- That's how a summary is like. They're not:
- "The movie is based on a book. A woman named Lisa was kidnapped by some men, and never returned. The movie explores love, tragedy, and depression. The character of Lisa is really real, and the police are not just some characters, but very deep ones. The search for Lisa, her story, and what happened is all the movie is about, and can make audiences cry."
- I suggest you read film articles like Midsommar, Shazam! (film), Blood and Black Lace, etc to get a feel of what a plot summary is. They are, as WP:FILMPLOT says, "an overview of the film's main events".
- PLEASE, when good editors like me and Lugnuts revert your edits, they have good intentions. DO NOT assume bad faith, as you do right now, making some sort of FBI scene. I tried searching for the full movie to show you how a plot is, but am unable to obtain the movie.
- In short, your additions are not the summary of the movie, but the themes, and you added WP:OR, which is not allowed. I hope you get more WP:CIVIL-- even your reply at Teahouse marks that you just want yourself to be correct, something that makes many newbies back away from Wikipedia. GeraldWL 14:20, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Also, plot summaries are supposed to have spoilers. They ARE spoilers of the movie. GeraldWL 14:21, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I'll go through your comments on the Greece WHS soon. If you plan to work on Indonesia's list, I'll be happy to help to keep the style consistent. The article needs some trimming and style adjustments. Let me know. --Tone 18:56, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Tone, hi there. Yeah, I see some stuff wrong with the Indonesia list. If you are willing to, please help! Every edit counts. That is one of the articles that have helped me through my school hardships, so you know how much it means. GeraldWL 16:04, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Deal! My next list was about to be Hungary but I can move to Indonesia first. I'll see what I can do. --Tone 16:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Now I kind of formatted the WHS main list. As far as I checked, all descriptions have to be rewritten because the current ones are copied directly from the UNESCO sites. And they are too long, especially the tentative ones. 4-5 sentences max for each one. Good luck :) --Tone 16:49, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Tone, thanks for them! I'll be sure to fix them out :-) GeraldWL 16:50, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Prep 5
Hi, as the nominator you are not allowed to change your hook in prep. We can discuss it here, or you can post your complaints on the DYK talk page.
Here is your original hook: ... that children's book See You in the Cosmos was not initially written as a children's book, with there being adult themes throughout?
To be honest, the grammar in the hook is terrible. It's better to use an active verb than a poorly constructed gerund like there being
. But I started by getting rid of the repetitive language and changed it to: ... that the children's book See You in the Cosmos was not initially written as such, with there being adult themes throughout?
Then I realized that as such
sounds more literary than engaging, so I changed it to: ... that the children's book See You in the Cosmos was not initially written for youth, as it had adult themes throughout?
As I said, I don't think the hook is very good at all. But if that's the hook angle you want, what is wrong with the last incarnation? Yoninah (talk) 17:56, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yoninah, sorry for the change! I was just tryna being WP:BOLD as I think the "with there being" hook sounds more... direct? But if that's the preferred hook, that doesn't matter anyway. What matters is that there's a hook. GeraldWL 02:18, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

DYK nomination of See You in the Cosmos
Hello! Your submission of See You in the Cosmos at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 12:02, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- OK, please don't panic over this. The DYK process involves a lot of editors looking at the same material and making sure that the article is verified by the sources and that the hook is cited correctly. Once the hook gets onto the main page, Wikipedia's readership will also be looking it over and commenting if they find an error. We need to make sure everything is tip-top so there won't be any more delays. This is also not a race to get things on the main page. Please address these two issues so we can proceed. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 12:02, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello. Can you please tell me why you did delete my section "Community" for MSFS2020? Do you think community is not relevant for this game? Or can you tell me a wikipedia rule I have broken with my writing? Please explain yourself. AndreAdrian (talk) 20:04, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- AndreAdrian, hi there. The community content sounds a lot like third-parties, which are extra content outside of the main developers. There is already a subsection about them, which is why I don't see what is the difference between them and community content. GeraldWL 01:09, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
Please see note on your DYK review. The grammar in the hook is not acceptable. Yoninah (talk) 22:19, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Interview request
Hello, Gerald Waldo Luis!
My name is Daniel, and I’m a senior at Harvard University currently writing an undergraduate thesis about Wikipedia. I’m particularly interested in how the Wikipedia community decides what facts are relevant and/or notable enough to warrant inclusion on a particular article — especially in regards to articles on contentious topics.
I noticed that you’ve been quite active editing the “COVID-19 pandemic” article over the past few months. So, would you mind if I send you a few questions (via email or right here) about your work editing that article, and the approach that you take? I’d really love to hear from you.
Thanks so much! --Dalorleon (talk) 16:18, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Dalorleon, surely! I'd recommend you not use the Wikipedia email feature as it will not allow me to reply. Just query it right here, in my talk page. It makes things easier. Looking forward! GeraldWL 01:25, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks so much, Gerald Waldo Luis! I've posted my questions below; let me know if you need me to clarify any of them.
- 1) How long have you been editing Wikipedia? And how long have you been an active editor of the “COVID-19 pandemic” Wikipedia article?
- 2) When adding content to the “COVID-19 pandemic” Wikipedia article, how do you decide what facts are relevant / notable enough to warrant inclusion?
- 3) When removing content from the “COVID-19 pandemic” Wikipedia article, how do you decide what facts are irrelevant / non-notable enough to warrant deletion?
- 4) Are there any particular Wikipedia policy / guidelines pages that you rely on to guide your editing? (Like “Wikipedia:Editing policy,” “Wikipedia:Writing better articles,” etc.)
- 5) Do you feel that Wikipedia’s “official” editing guidelines are helpful, or do you generally ignore them? If you prefer forging your own path, do you feel that Wikipedia offers you that flexibility?
- 6) Has adding or deleting content from the “COVID-19 pandemic” Wikipedia article ever brought you into conflict with another Wikipedian? If so, how were those disputes resolved?
- 7) Do you identify more as an inclusionist, a deletionist, or neither / something else?
- Thanks again for agreeing to help my research! Feel free to weigh in on anything I didn’t specifically ask in regards to your editing practices. I’m primarily curious to learn about what factors you consider when deciding what content ought to be added / removed from Wikipedia articles.
- Finally, if I do include your responses in my thesis, would you prefer to remain completely anonymous, or can I include your username? I really appreciate it! --Dalorleon (talk) 01:33, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- Those are cool questions, Dalorleon. I'll answer them below. Also, feel free to include my username, you certainly can.
- 1) I have been editing Wikipedia since May 24, 2020. It's initially just a small edit on a film article. And I have edited COVID-19 pandemic's article since 28 June 2020. It's initially some minor wording fixes, but then I got pet-peeved by the overly-detailed lead (when it should be the summary) and soon start trimming it with other editors to make a concise in-a-nutshell. I soon also joined the WikiProject COVID-19, a group of editors who agree to collaborate on COVID-19 articles, and created one article on the international aid during the pandemic.
- 2) First and foremost, I think to myself: "is this okay for a medical article?" WP:MEDRS requires that sources written/edited by someone expert in the medical field to be relied upon more. Thus, for claims talking about scientific things, I rely upon medical sources (i.e. CDC, NCBI, Nature) more. However for non-medical things, generic newspapers or magazines can do.
- 3) So far deletions in the article are mostly concerned towards size. The size is currently nearing 300,000, and considering the recent developments, may expand larger. At one point, the article reaches the size limit, during which rendering is hard. Editors then initiate splits: moving some information to a standalone article (i.e. COVID-19 pandemic in India, Indonesia, Singapore, etc). A lot of the content in the article are excerpts or summaries from the other articles. So if an information is not summarizing their main articles, then it should probably be deleted.
- 4) I don't really rely more on a specific guideline, because all editors do. I do have, though, essays by other editors that help me writing or making a decision.
- 5) There are guidelines that make sense and I follow and everyone follows, but some of them just don't make sense in some context. WP:IAR allows us to, at appropriate times, ignore some rules if it is in the best interest of the readers, and if it doesn't damage the encyclopedia. However some rules are not covered by IAR, such as copyright and civility. These two policies are agreed to by all.
- 6) Yes! There is no controversial editing without disputes. Amid trimming the lead, some editors oppose my decision as not improving. Then conversations pop up on the talk page, a place to discuss improvements to the article, which leads to the lead you see today. The key to dispute resolution is assuming good faith and be civil. By respecting the opposition and be open-minded, you will not regret what comes out of it.
- 7) I identify as an eventualist, one who gives some time for things to improve before making the ultimate decision. You can say this is between inclu and deletionism. This is one effective use of eventualism: Sriwijaya Air Flight 182's article initially started as a stub with just the words "Sriwijaya Air Flight 182". Editors don't rush on deleting and instead expand the article, and voila, what the article is today.
- I hope I've answered all your questions properly! Feel free to share your thesis to me if you've done it, I'd love to see it-- perhaps it can improve my editing skills. You never know. GeraldWL 04:57, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your answers, Gerald Waldo Luis! These are extremely helpful replies. I'll let you know if I have any follow-up questions moving forward. I'll definitely also think about sending my thesis around to the Wikipedians who provided me their insights. Thanks again, and best of luck to you! --Dalorleon (talk) 14:11, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Pending changes reviewer granted
Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.
Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Regarding maharashtra students welfare association page
Hello
My page Maharastra students welfare association has been rejected. So I wanted to know that how i can delete this page so that i can create a new one and work on it please help me with this — Preceding unsigned comment added by Publicspeaker2020 (talk • contribs) 18:40, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Publicspeaker2020, you cannot and I cannot. Only an admin can. The draft does not meet any requirements that would qualify an article, so I don't think your next attempt will succeed. GeraldWL 05:02, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
- Also if you are connected to the Association, please read WP:COI or WP:PAID. GeraldWL 05:03, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Reply tool
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[1]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[2] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- A large A/B test will start soon.[3] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
New discussion tool
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[4] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
Next: Notifications
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.
