How to pick number of audio samples
[edit]Hello, I see you are listed on the set of FAC mentors with an interest in music. Can I ask your advice? How should I determine the right number of audio samples to use in a music article?
I am currently working on a music article and trying to figure out how to balance Mos music samples with WP:NFCCP#3 minimal use. I have posted on the talk page for MoS Music samples to ask for help. If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them. Thanks! --Culix (talk) 04:36, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Culix: Great question! First off, I know there isn't a 'right' answer per se, and many deletionist editors out there will tell you that, in essence, the correct number is zero. Just remember that some people will always have very strong opinions about this sort of thing, and you might have to defend your choices in the future.
- In my experience, I've had luck with one or two if it's an album I'm working on, and a few more if it's, say, a band that has a large discography. When choosing the samples, it's best to pick songs that really need them... if that makes any sense. Like, an article on a song that has bizarre time signature and uses rubber bands as the main instrument might really use a sample to let a reader just what the heck it sounds like. A very simple rock song that isn't that remarkable, either musically or lyrically probably doesn't need that.
- Length is another thing to consider. If the song is 4 minutes, and your sample is around 15 seconds, you're only using 6.25% of the whole song. That's really not that much, especially when you consider that your 15 second sample in any real way serve as a replacement for the full thing. But if the song is 1:30 and your sample is 30 seconds, you're in 33.3% territory, and now it's very questionable. WP:SAMPLE has a nice cheat sheet on what length of sample to use.
- I hope these initial points were useful. If I might ask, what article are you working on? I might be able to provide some more detailed advice if I know what we're talking about.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:49, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reply! I think this makes sense.
- When I started I was looking at articles like Tool (band) and Love._Angel._Music._Baby.. Tool uses four samples, and the other one uses three. So my impression was that using several clips was standard. But it appears this is not always true.
- I am working on The Phenomenauts. They have five albums, and have several comments from reviewers noting that the band uses multiple music styles and genres. Personally, from my first naive opinion I thought it would help illustrate their style to use three audio clips. I used one for "rockabilly" style, one for "new wave", and one for "punk rock". That seemed to give a good overview of the band. However, if that is far beyond fair use I will first attempt to make a case for using one clip.
- >A very simple rock song that isn't that remarkable, either musically or lyrically probably doesn't need that.
- Thanks, this is a good thing to think about. I see that on Tool's page the songs they use are also quite notable. One was in a court case. Two won Grammys. So likely that helps. I think there is a case for at least one Phenomenauts song to be notable and have critical commentary. I will try to fix up the article.
- Do you have any favourite examples of well placed audio use?
- Thanks! --Culix (talk) 06:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- From a cursory glance at these albums/pages (and my knowledge of the musicians in question), I'd say you're probably good. Tool, for instance, is pretty unique and they get a lot of props for their style. I've never heard of The Phenomenauts, but since the three songs you mentioned are all different styles, I think it makes total sense to give readers a little 'taste' of what the band can do. And the 'generic rock' thing is kind of hard to pin down, but I feel like a lot of albums have those tracks that are just meh. Those probably shouldn't be on pages, but something that won a Grammy and has been lauded for its unique style definitely should, imho. Anyway, those pages you're working in look really good!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate you taking a look :) (I am actually only working on The Phenomenauts. I did not mean to take any credit for the other two articles) I was also re-reading through contextual significance, and trying to add critical commentary into the article to make a stronger case. Perhaps it is best to build up, one (sourced) piece at a time.
- When you work on Featured Articles with audio samples, do you usually ask for feedback and 'vetting' of the clips before you apply for GA or FA?
- Happy editing! --Culix (talk) 05:12, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

@Culix: Oh, whoops, I mis-read your earlier comment. I definitely think it's best to write a nice section that can then be enriched with a musical sample, rather than the other way around. Not only will you avoid a premature deletionist campaign, but you can also, as you say, build up a strong case for the sample's inclusion. As for 'vetting', what you could do is add the sample in, bulk up the NFCC rationale on the snippet page and on the article itself, and then reach out to Wikipedia:Peer review? People there might be willing to comb over the article and see if the sample works. Feel free to reach out to me, too. I can always take a gander.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:15, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:02, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Gen. Quon,
At Wikipedia:Mentoring for FAC#Mentors, you said: "My editing interests are all over the place, but I have the most Wikipedia experience in television (post-1990 shows mostly) and pop culture-related fields (e.g. popular and alt. rock music). I also work with anthropological and classics articles. All in all, I'm open to working with people outside my area of 'expertise'." You also have a userbox for taking 12 articles from deletion discussion to good article status.
I hope I can interest you in helping me get Indiggo, an article about two Romanian born, now American, identical twins, promoted from Stub-class to Featured Article. The article was actually deleted and relisted as a result of a deletion review that resulted in no consensus. The second AfD resulted in a "Keep," when an editor provided a link to swiss.charts.com that said a 2006 single had been 89th in Germany for 2 weeks. I have sources describing their music as "tribal pop," "pop/rock," "gypsy pop" and "theatrical hip hop." They appeared on America's Got Talent in 2006. One of them was on Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit.
I was one of two editors primarily responsible for promoting Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from C Class to GA. I started work on Indiggo on July 26. Since then, I've gone through all the existing cites, eliminated half of the existing sections, added two sections and doubled the existing two sections with additional material, resulting in massive changes to the text. I kept extensive notes on the talk page and created a subpage with machine translations of the foreign language sources. My 452 extensive edit summaries also record my actions.
I hope that the idea of promoting an article about a barely notable band that was deleted to Featured Article captures your fancy and that I have provided enough information about me to convince you that time spent mentoring me will result in improvement to the article. Besides contacting you, my plan is to go through my early cites, adding additional details, e.g. publisher and publication place, go through my sources to find additional words or cites for the article, reading the MOS and conforming the article to it.
I realize you are very busy. Thank you for your attention. Vyeh (talk) 00:17, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Vyeh: Hey, thanks for reaching out! I'd be more than happy to help out. If it's OK, I might spread the work out over this next week. What I'd first like to do is get familiar with the topic (as I've never heard of 'em, so I don't want to be too ignorant; it's an interesting topic, though). Then I can peak over the article, maybe do a copy-edit if needed, and we can go from there. Would that work for you? I am a bit busy, so if I don't do anything within the next few days, just ping me and I'll jump back on this.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 01:19, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: Thank you for your prompt response. Your time table is fine. I ordered two of their CD's from Germany. I won't get them until October. It's not surprising you haven't heard of them. They're barely notable. They aren't Röyksopp. I recommend Google searches on "Indiggo," "Wicked Clone," "Gabriela Modorcea" and "Mihaela Modorcea." Jay-Z and Kanye West sampled their single "La La La" on "Watch the Throne" (2011). The NYT review mentioned them about 5/6th of the way through the review. You'll see in the references a lot of foreign language sources and off-line books. I ordered Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: The Unofficial Companion to check a cite. While I welcome your copy-edit, your time may be more efficiently used by citing the appropriate sections of the MOS and letting me take a first crack. I appreciate your time. I can see you're very busy. Vyeh (talk) 04:05, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: Indiggo has been moving fast. They started a third Off-Broadway production. They released a cast album digitally. Do you have the ability to create a sample that meets WP's guidelines. Besides the preview that is available at iTunes, I'd be interested in a sample of this YouTube video for the "La La La" section. Can you tell me how to use a fair use rationale for this picture of the new album? I'd like to use it in the cast album section. If you could quickly look at the article and tell me what I need to change, referring me to the appropriate MOS, that would allow us to get the article prepared for FA nomination. If you are interested in adding another article to your deletion review to GA tally, keep an eye on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/All Things Broadway, although I can't promise it will get to deletion review. In a nutshell, I found 2 sources. I thought it would be fun to do a quick article. I posted an initial draft. When I came back from dinner, it was in AfD. At AfD, an editor said there were a lot of articles, but they were "mostly" blogs. I asked for the URL's and discovered two sources, which I added. I've put on the Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC agenda a review of Indiggo. They meet Wednesday. Thank you! Vyeh (talk) 19:52, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
@Vyeh: Sorry for the delay. I've looked over the article, and here are my initial thoughts:
- First things first, the initial portion of the article seems to be a case of Citation overkill. The first sentence in the body has eight citations! The second half is much more streamlined vis-a-vis citations and reads better because of that. Second, it's generally recommend, though not required, that multiple citations proceed according to their number. So for instance, if you had [3][1][51][4], you'd ideally want [1][3][4][51]. Likely this is an aesthetic choice, but I've seen it 'enforced' quite a bit, so it's something to think about.
- OK, now onto the actual content. A couple things about the first paragraph: First, "multi-talented" comes a cross a little too peacockish for my taste. I'd just skip it and say "... Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea, Romanian-American actresses, etc." Second, there's a lot of redundant descriptors in that first paragraph. "Writer", in my opinion, covers "novelist" and "poet". Likewise with choreographers/dance teachers/dancers. I'd trim this down.
- In the "Romanian childhood" section, there really is no need to list out every detail about their parents (e.g. their mother's PhD thesis is not really relevant to any of this).
- There are a handful of puff-terms in this article, like "pop-titan". Watch out for those.
- Once again, there's a lot of excessive detail in certain sections. For instance, there is no need to spell out what Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is about, as that has hardly anything to do with the subject matter. The same is true for the IGN review of National Lampoon's Van Wilder, which really isn't really pertinent, especially considering the rather minor role that Gabriela played. Ditto if this is the case with Lyubov v bolshom gorode. If they weren't the subject of criticism, I'd say it is enough to just mention their roles and leave it at that.
All-in-all, it's come a long way in recent months, and the prose is decent. I'd say that the citation overkill and presence of excessive info are its biggest problems at the moment. But luckily, having to cut from an article is much easier than having to add to one. As for copyright/fair-use questions, this portal is probably the best place to go. You can spell out what you're wanting to do and people who have a better handling of the guidelines can guide you. To be honest, my history with fair use media has been very ad hoc, and quite a few of my uploads have been deleted.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:22, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: Thank you! I'll put in all of your suggestions. Do you have a rule of thumb for the appropriate number of cites? Vyeh (talk) 20:42, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Vyeh: As a hard-and-fast rule, no, but generally, if you're going beyond a few (2-3), something might need to be tweaked. Wikipedia:Citation overkill is a good place to check for guidance. I think the "Notability bomb" section is a really important one to read over, in regards to this article.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:57, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon:I've attempted to implement your suggestions. I'll read WP:Citation overkill and choose the cites to go. Feel free to eliminate puff-terms if that is quicker than explaining. I've got to go. Thank you so much for coming on board. My objective is FA, whatever it takes. I like your initial suggestions. I'm over 40k. There is some hidden text (soft delete) that can be eliminated, but I need your eyes to make cuts. Thanks again. Vyeh (talk) 21:13, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: I believe I did everything you asked for. Could you read the article again? Vyeh (talk) 15:54, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Vyeh: It indeed does look better. I still think the ten adjectival phrases in the first sentence are a bit much. (Consider D. Djajakusuma, a featured article, that features only a two adjectival phrases, namely "Indonesian film director" and "promoter of traditional art forms".) Regarding their parents, I think it would be better if the section read: "Their father, Grid,[32] was trained as a writer,[3][33] filmmaker,[32] and critic,[34] and worked for 30 years as a film producer and screen writer at the National Cinematography and the Romanian National Television. Their mother, Violeta,[32] worked as a translator of Mongolian,[37][38] Russian[39] and American[40] literature, and taught world literature[3][32] at the "Gheorghe Lazar" National College in Bucharest.[32]" The fact that their parents had PhDs is interesting, but not really pertinent to Indiggo. (Also, it looks like their parents both had PhDs, meaning that their father had a PhD in Art, not a Doctor of Arts degree, and their mother had a PhD in Philology, not a Doctor of Philology degree).--Gen. Quon (Talk) 18:18, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: I implemented your changes except I left in for the mother, "was also trained as a writer [cite 1][cite 2]" for parallel structure and to preserve a cite that links to the Bibliography and is a book written by the mother on Indiggo. Theoretically, "Further Reading." I took the liberty of reducing some of the double cites in your suggestion. This material is not contentious (I hope!) so a single cite is sufficient for verifiability. Vyeh (talk) 19:59, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: What is the appropriate amount of information for the section about the current album? I have the titles of all 25 songs. Can you outline what needs to be done before the article is ready for FAN? I really appreciate the help you've given me. The article looks prettier. Let me know if you are too busy to continue mentoring me. Thanks. Vyeh (talk) 10:03, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Vyeh: I would say hold off on adding all the song titles, unless one or two are released as singles--those could probably be added in. As for FAN, I'd recommend two things: First, get the article peer-reviewed; this will get someone else to look at it (possibly someone new to the topic), provide feedback, and made constructive criticism. Second, apply to have the article copy-edited. I don't think the prose is bad, but it's never a bad idea to have someone really competent in English look over an article, as they'll often find little issues that others miss.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:18, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Two are in the beginning stages and User:Genericusername57 has read through the article, made some general comments and even did a bit of copy-editing. Vyeh (talk) 18:35, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: I still need to address User:Twofingered Typist's comments about two of my sources. User:Codyorb and User:Genericusername57 have signed off on the peer review. User:Drown Soda is still peer reviewing. What are the next steps? What are the issues that came up when your 12 articles went through FAR? Thanks! Vyeh (talk) 03:17, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Good to see you're still pluggin' away! The copy-edit and peer-review have made this page look a lot nicer. I honestly feel like getting as many second opinions as you can will make the work stronger. (I don't know if you've seen this page, but it might also help.) Personally, I like to implement peer review info, work on the article for a bit, ask for a second copy-edit, and then nominate articles. If you think it is ready, go ahead and nominate it.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 23:17, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: Thank you for the link. Are there any other policies, guidelines, MOS and essays I should focus on? The changes suggested by the copy-edit and the peer-review haven't been extensive. Besides the actual copy-edit, which was relatively light, the copy editor suggested I merge the musical section into the rest of the article, which I've done, and questioned five sources. After a polite query from me about four of the sources, he relented. That leaves me with finding alternate sources or eliminating text for one source and looking for alternate sources for a couple of other sources.
- User:DGG, who has a lot of experience, has promised me that he would look at the lead. I should be able to follow-up in a couple of weeks, after I finish with the sources, with a request to look at the whole article. I have already requested my partner on getting a video game article to GA to look at the article. He is in his first semester of law school, so I'm not sure when he will be able to do so. I have three editors who were helpful a couple of months ago with the foreign language sources I could ask to read the article. With your explicit permission, I could go back to the FA mentor list and ask for second opinions.
- Since I'm not going to make extensive changes (the article is already long and I've gone through it several times trying to condensed the information), I think the 20 day delay for a second copy-edit and subsequent loss in my momentum isn't worth another pair of experienced eyes.
- What were your experiences with articles that failed FA the first time? If you would identify them, I could read the reviews and educate myself about potential landmines.
- What were your experiences with other articles you've mentored for FA? What are the mistakes first-time FA nominators make?
- What do you think are potential issues that might come up in a FAR of Indiggo?
- Besides your invaluable advice, are you able to help me through the review process?
- I really appreciate your time. I didn't want to bother you until the copy-edit and peer review were complete. (There was a third editor who began the peer review, but I haven't heard from that editor for a couple of weeks.) My questions to you fall in two broad areas: (1) What can I do to improve the article? (2) What is the best way to get FA for Indiggo? (E.g. can you nominate it as my FA mentor? Will that improve Indiggo's chances since you're a known editor?) Once again, thank you so much for your help!!! Vyeh (talk) 14:17, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- I forgot to mention this, but the next thing you should do is take this to WP:GAN. Almost all FAs start as GAs, and while this is not a requirement, it will certainly make it stronger, as it will undergo another review.
- I think the biggest hurdle for most FARs is the quality of the prose. Back in the day, it used to be really hard to get an article up to FA, and part of that was because they wanted "occasionally brilliant" text. I think they dialed this down a bit after realizing that this is almost certainly asking too much, but with that said, there is still a demand for top-quality stuff. I guarantee you that when you nominate the article, most of the criticism will be about the prose; this is just inevitable, it seems. Tony1 has some good writing/editing exercises, such as "Removing Redundancy", "Advanced Editing Exercises", and Spot the Ambiguity". These are definitely worth checking out.
- As for some examples of my FA noms, sure:
- Here is one article that took me three tries to get promoted. The first FAR was torpedoed by editors who were (understandably) unhappy about the prose. The second was torpedoed by an initial burst of superficial supports, followed by more thorough opposes. After that second one, I worked extensively on getting the prose up to FA-quality. User:Sarastro1 was very helpful, as they gave me some really useful hints and suggestions on the article's peer review page. (As you can see, I got this peer-reviewed twice!)
- Here is another article that I actually withdrew when a certain editor started to be really cranky with me. This editor was unhappy with repetition in the poem (understandable) but also took issue with certain technical phrases (like "critically edited", which is a pretty standard phrase in philology/classics). Anyway, I decided to pull it from FAR, rework it by copy-editing it, and getting it peer-reviewed (again, for a second time), which really helped. After that, it passed, and I think it is one of my best articles.
- The march to FA is not a quick one. In fact, it can take months, if not years (I created "Astronomica", for instance, on May 16, 2016 and only got it to FA on September 13, 2017, after months and months of continuous work). This long process inevitably entails at least one (or more peer-reviews), and having the work copy-edited a number of times by different editors ("Astronomica" was copy-edited by five editors, plus myself). I think that's something to be aware of.
- Feel free to reach out to another editor on the mentor board. I do apologize I haven't been able to really dive into this as much as I'd like (you might be able to tell from my editing history in the last few months, but I have some major commitments elsewhere, which has hampered my Wiki time).--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:22, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- FWIW , though I often give advice about an article, and often edit one directly to improve it, I don't participate in the FA process, and I prefer not to engage in negotiations about content or acceptability or quality. When I came here 12 years ago, after a long academic career as a teacher and librarian and editor, I thought I would would use my experience to bring articles to a high quality, and write some at that level myself. But I soon found it more satisfying to work at the opposite end of the scale, trying to rescue the relatively few articles on important subjects that would otherwise be deleted, with the incidental role of deleting the great many ones that were hopeless.
- This is what i still do. I'll rescue, but not usually do more than that, because I want to help as many articles and editors as I can. I'll offer advice how to improve an article, I'll sometimes fix it myself, I'll once in a while rewrite when that seems the most feasible course. People who don't like what I do can revert me -- if I think it really matters, I may argue the point a little. But I'm not going to get involved in prolonged discussions about a single point of content or a single article unless there is a general issue involved.
- Vyeh, everyone works in their own way here. Please don't feel I deserted you. DGG ( talk ) 04:13, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: I'll consider GAN. The reason I haven't included it in my plans is because I read an article loses GA status when it becomes FA and it doesn't get back its lost GA status if it subsequently loses FA. The User:Tony1 links are invaluable. Thank you for describing the process you went through with The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati and Astronomica (Manilius). That is very helpful. You've been very helpful. Your comment about the ordering of the footnotes, WP:Citation overkill, peer review and copy-edits have really helped the article. I appreciate the time you've spared from your major commitments.
- DGG I did not mean to imply to User:Gen. Quon that you had deserted me. I only meant to convey that I had another experienced editor who had already made a commitment that I could ask to review the article after I finished implementing the changes suggested by the copy-editor User:Twofingered Typist. Of the five sources questioned, he/she relented on two of them and said the other two were acceptable if there were not better sources. The fifth source had been identified as a "Wikipedia-like" source in an edit summary. If I can't find alternative sources, I'll rework the text.
- The other issue I want to address is the "occasionally brilliant" prose. I have deliberately kept my writing dry. After reviewing the articles Gen. Quon has very helpfully suggested, I plan to read FA articles (User:kosboot suggested reading 20 other articles to figure out the WP standard).
- I know you and Gen. Quon are very busy. From you, I'm looking for pointers to resources, which allow me to educate myself. If I need help digging into the article, I'm sure User:Genericusername57 would be willing. Unasked, he/she cite checked a Romanian source and inserted a couple of needed spaces in one of the last paragraphs. He/she may be inexperienced in wiki matters, but he/she has already made a significant contribution to the article. My initial question about him/her was due to his/her display of enthusiasm, which isn't a bad thing.
- As I mentioned at the September NYC wiki meeting, you restored Indiggo for a deletion review in 2014, which ended up NC. On the second AfD, an editor found that one of their singles had made the German charts and the article was kept. So this is an article you rescued. Having gone through a GAR for Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, I know this article is as good as that article.
- I'm impressed you followed me here and read through the discussion here. You certainly have not deserted me! Thank you! Vyeh (talk) 16:50, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: Progress report: User:Genericusername57 has spent three weeks giving Indiggo a thorough review. Initially, he did it on his talk page. When he asked if he should transfer his comments to the peer review, I said yes. It will be nice for the FA reviewers to see the article has been scrutinized. I've reviewed his article Jim Towey several times as reciprocation. I'm also been peer reviewing Lana Turner, which stalled in FAN. User:Fisa2702 has promised to peer review Indiggo because I peer reviewed Untitled from Marilyn Monroe. Vyeh (talk) 21:20, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
RonBot (talk) 17:07, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
Rebecca Sugar
[edit]You asked for my rationale:
1. She identities as a non-binary woman, so her position as the first woman show creator on the network does not need an asterisk.
2. It is an article about Summer Camp Island, not about Rebecca Sugar. Her article already includes as section about her gender identity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grand Commander13 (talk • contribs) 13:56, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Grand Commander13: Then why did you revert my initial edit? I agree with you that because she identifies as a "non-binary woman ... her position as the first woman show creator on the network does not need an asterisk" (that was literally the whole point of this edit). As of right now, the prose is very clunky, having back-to-back parentheticals.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 13:59, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- That edit was for the second reason: it's an article about Summer Camp Island. In an article about Steven Universe it wouldn't feel as clunky, but she's not the showrunner on SCI, Ms. Pott is.
- -Grand Commander13 (talk) 14:07, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Grand Commander13: You seem to be saying two different things? She's not the star of the article (which I agree with), and her gender identity doesn't need a note (which I agree with). Yet you reverted my edits? "(the first being Steven Universe, which was created by Rebecca Sugar)." is succinct and to the point. I don't see why you find it questionable.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:36, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Request for peer review
[edit]Hello, it's culix here again. We spoke a few months ago about choosing audio samples for a music page.
I am humbly writing to ask: would you be willing to do a peer review?
I am still working on The Phenomenauts. I have done many copyedits and submitted a peer review request, but unfortunately no one had time to look. I have also worked to improve the section on Musical Style, to make a case for including a single audio sample on the page. Would you have time to look or give any advice?
I'm quite happy to trade peer reviews and do a review of an article of your choosing, if you wish. If you do not have time or interest, that is certainly quite fine!
Thanks for your time! --Culix (talk) 05:07, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Culix: Good to hear from you. I'd be more than happy to help out. I don't have any pr requests at the moment (as far as I know), so no worries there. Do you have a timeline for when you want it completed? I should be able to get to it within the week. If that works, let me know.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:25, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

- @Gerda Arendt: Thank you so much!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:56, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you today for Astronomica (Manilius), about "a Latin hexameter didactic poem (probably) written by the Roman poet Marcus Manilius during the reign of Caesar Augustus or Tiberius. The five-book work describes celestial phenomena, explaining the zodiac and astrology. The poem—which seems to have been inspired by Lucretius's Epicurean poem, De rerum natura—espouses a Stoic, deterministic understanding of a universe overseen by a god and governed by reason. The work is of note for a number of reasons. First, it is seen as an answer to Lucretius's aforementioned poem. Second, it is an important window into Roman views on astrology and Stoicism. Third, it very barely made it to the present day, as only one manuscript transmitted the poem through the Middle Ages. Finally, its style is rather heady and peculiar, and its subject matter is very, very complicated and dense. These last few factors have led to it being described (rather hilariously, might I add) as "like a trigonometry texbook rendered as a Saturday New York Times crossword."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 04:46, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Big brown bat
[edit]Hey, thanks for helping push big brown bat across the finish line for GA! It's one of the Top 25 most popular bat articles, so I'm quite pleased :) Enwebb (talk) 18:33, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Enwebb: That's so awesome to hear! Right now I'm a little swamped with school work (hence why I sorta disappeared there for a bit), but in the future I'd love to work on a few more bat articles (probably something like Eastern red bat). So if you're ever up for another collab, just let me know!--Gen. Quon (Talk)

[edit]FAC help
[edit]Hello! I hope you are having an excellent end of the year. Apologies for the random message. I saw your username on the FAC mentoring list, and wanted to reach out for help with my current FAC. A reviewer recommended "a fresh set of eyes" on the FAC since I contacted you because you have experience with television shows on the FAC level. I understand it is a busy time so I completely understand if you do not have the time or energy. Have a happy holidays! Aoba47 (talk) 01:59, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: I’d be more than happy to take a look in the next couple days. These next two weeks are pretty free for me. Is there anything in particular that you are wanting me to keep an eye out for? Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:35, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! The reviewer raised two potential issues: 1) the length of the lead and 2) the prose needing some tightening. I have tried to trim down the lead and address the prose concerns, but I would say those remain the two man things to look out for. Thank you again for helping! Aoba47 (talk) 20:01, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- OK, I'm going to start looking through it. I did a minor rearranging of the lede (revert or edit if you think it's unnecessary). Also, I know that Jessica DiCicco was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for the series, and her article is one of few voice actresses out there with a decent picture. Might be worth including.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:46, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for the suggestion. I added the DiCicco picture in the cast alongside the Warburton one as they represent a nice contrast between a returning voice actor for a returning character vs a new voice actor for a new character. They have also both received award nominations so it seems fitting to use their images as well. I have adjusted the caption to better reflect this. Aoba47 (talk) 02:03, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
@Aoba47: Sorry for the radio silence. I've been a way for a bit! I think the pic changes look really nice. I'll try to take another peek over the article in the next few days.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:12, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- No worries. Thank you again for the picture suggestion, and take as much time as you need to look over the article. It is always good to have different perspectives because I can read over errors. Hope you had an awesome holidays! Aoba47 (talk) 17:14, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: It looks like I missed the vote, but congrats on the FA! I did a few minor copyedits, but it looks really good. If you're interested, I have only two minor comments:
- Was there a stated reason why Spade didn’t take part? Likewise, was there a reason that Goodman returned for season two?
- Unfortunately, I could not find information on either of these points. Spade only reprised the role for Kronk's New Groove, and J. P. Manoux voiced all of Kuzco's appearances after that. I would not be surprised if Goodman's return was delayed by either a contract negotiation or conflicts with other works, but that is pure speculation. Manoux did a good job as Kuzco, but it is a shame that Spade did not return for the series. Aoba47 (talk) 02:18, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- ”the series provided an opportunity to introduce students to topics like the cultures and peoples of the pre-Columbian era” Did the show actually follow through? If not, I’d reword this.
- That is a reviewer's opinion so I have revised it to hopefully clarify that it was one person's opinion and not just a fact. The series never explicitly showcases aspects of Incan culture, like quipus or the Inca road system, but I could see an argument being made that the setting alone could be a good introduction to first introduce children to pre-Columbian history and learn from other sources. I find it a rather weak argument, considering the franchise is built on so many anachronisms, but I respect the person's opinion. I hope that makes sense. Aoba47 (talk) 02:18, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- But, like I said earlier, congrats! This was fun to read. I've never seen the show, but New Groove is—in my opinion—one of Disney's greatest movies and a forgotten classic.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 19:22, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! I had a lot of fun writing it and learning from the FAC. New Groove is one of my favorite Disney movies, and it is a shame that it underperformed in theaters. I feel somewhat conflicted on the show. It is a lot of fun to watch, but I think the premise is rather flawed. The school setting never really worked for me, and I was disappointed that all the character development from the film was ignored. Let me know what you think if you watch in the future. Aoba47 (talk) 02:18, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- Will do! Thanks.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 05:55, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Fanatastic job! Are you not permitted to use one screenshot in the infoboxes? It seems a pity you can't use any images.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:08, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks! Back when I (alongside @Grapple X, Glimmer721, and Ruby2010:) were overhauling the episode articles, we tried to put a screenshot in every box. Unfortunately, many of them were deleted because they failed fair use tests, but luckily a few remain! Either way, I'm glad you like the articles. It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with what we were able to do!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:06, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, what Gen. Quon says is true about those images and fair use – many were deleted if their rationale wasn't strong enough. (I'd also like to echo Dr. Blofeld – those X-Files articles are great! Some of this site's best work.) Ruby2010 (talk) 21:52, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Game of Thrones potential FAC
[edit]Hello Gen. Quon! I saw your name over at WP:FAM and I just thought of dropping you a line. I would love to bring Game of Thrones to feature article status. I'm currently working on List of awards and nominations received by Game of Thrones for featured list status so I think the main article would be my next step. I know it is a big undertaking but I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you. -- LuK3 (Talk) 19:58, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- @LuK3: Thanks for reaching out. I'm more than happy to offer a helping hand. IRL I'm a bit busy with a PhD program and some work stuff, so I won't be able to commit a huge amount of time in editing the article (you'll notice that my Wikipedia output overall has decreased in the last year or so), but I still am willing to help out. Is there any questions right off the bat that you'd like answered?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:32, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- Appreciate you helping out Gen. Quon! Right off the bat I'm seeing some structure issues, especially with the amount of subsections under "Production". I'm going to go through it in more detail throughout this week and see what other things I come across. -- LuK3 (Talk) 04:02, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- @LuK3: Good point. I do think some of those could be collapse down and/or turned into "sub-subsections." Also, the background section seems to be kind of an odd hodgepodge. There's nothing in it that is bad, I just think the contents might be better suited in different locations.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 04:24, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Completely agree. I have started to re-arrange some sections and created sub-sub-sections, especially in "Production". Is there anything you see that stands out to you that will need to be addressed before a nomination? -- LuK3 (Talk) 14:48, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

- @LuK3: Tbf, it ain't a bad article (refs are pretty solid and prose is readable), so that's good. I've always found prose issues to be the hardest part of an FAN. One suggestion I might make is to bulk up the character section with some extra, non-HBO sources. This is just a personal opinion, but I feel like there are a lot of good resources out there that explicate the characters, and you could use those rather than relying on the HBO link.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 16:48, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Appreciate the suggestion! It looked like that entire section relied heavily on that HBO source. I'm currently going through the refs and sources to see if I need to switch them out. -- LuK3 (Talk) 21:18, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hey Gen. Quon, just a heads up, the article is now at FAC, see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Game of Thrones/archive2. Of course, if you see anything else that needs fixing/updating just let me know. Thank you again! -- LuK3 (Talk) 15:18, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Adventure Time scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the Adventure Time article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 5, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 5, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted in recent years, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:45, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Help on Kansas-related articles on the Simple English Wikipedia
[edit]Hey, I know that this isn't the most ordinary request, and I know I haven't done that much on the standard English Wikipedia, but I have a request for you that I think you may be up for. A lot has changed on the Simple English Wikipedia since you gave me that barnstar for editing the Lawrence, KS article. That article officially became a good article, and it's actually likely to become a featured article there. I have also managed to get the History of Kansas article promoted to a good article there too. However, that wiki is in need of some help. I think there needs to be at least one good article for a city, state, and related page for either of those (in this case, a "history of" page). Lawrence serves as the city, the history article serves as the related page, but Kansas is not quite there yet. Also, many of the articles for the cities in Kansas need to be created. I have created many myself, and they too can serve as a template, but it's proving difficult to do it alone. I understand that the standard English Wikipedia is your home, but I ask as a fellow Kansan who also wants to make the state proud. It would double as an effective way for other users to see what a good quality article looks like, and it would help that wiki in much bigger ways than you can imagine. I hope you will consider it, if nothing else than for a change of pace. Thank you. ~Junedude433(talk) 16:30, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Junedude433: Thanks for the message, and I hope that you're well! I'd be interested in helping out, although right now, I'm in a bit of a pinch for time (PhD quals and the like). That said, I think this is a worthy goal to shoot for. IMHO, The simple English Wiki is cool, because it really forces people to break down obnoxious prose into more manageable pieces. Accessibility and all that jazz! Anyway, thanks, and I'll keep you posted.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:51, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- I appreciate your consideration! It can take a bit of time to get used to writing in Basic English since it limits your word choice, but once you get it, you're golden! ~Junedude433(talk) 14:54, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Gen. Quon: I hope you are still doing well, and I hope that you have qualified for you PhD! About one month has passed since you kindly considered joining. Right now, the community is (finally) focusing on and scrutinizing the Lawrence article to become featured. The more eyes that are on it, the better. I'm sure that will be promoted soon, and then we can work on the Kansas article together. I hope you are still interested, and I hope life is calming down a bit for you! Please keep me updated! ~Junedude433(talk) 18:27, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
- I appreciate the check-in! Has it really already been a month? Sheesh, time flies when there's a pandemic, I s'pose! I still am interested, but I won't lie, I've been mad swamped lately and don't have a ton of extra time atm. Perhaps in the future when things slow down a bit!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 14:20, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- I have finally had a decent editor do a more in-depth review to get the Lawrence article promoted to Featured and get Quantrill's Raid promoted to Good. We can go above and beyond with the article for just Kansas. The momentum is there. Have things slowed down enough? ~Junedude433(talk) 00:34, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

Featured article length & Laura Harrier
[edit]FAC Laura Harrier is currently in a standstill. One editor supported the promotion to FA status but the current editor believes the article is too short to be a Featured Article. Could you assist with this article or quickly look over it for a review, or if not interested in reviewing it, let me know if it is indeed too short please? Changing Redirect for Medium Rarities
[edit]Hello, I just wanted to give you a heads up that because there are now two other B-sides/cover/rarities compilation albums by Cattle Decapitation and (since yesterday) Mastodon, I have flagged the redirect for discussion in order to replace it with specific redirects to each artist's album. You can see more at the Redirects for Discussion page. Cheers! Superken67 (talk) 16:54, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Thesis
[edit]Your own link says that "Masters dissertations and theses are considered reliable only if they can be shown to have had significant scholarly influence." I don't think an obscure masters thesis from the University of Bucharest could be considered as such. Please find a more reliable source. Thank you. Danu Widjajanto (talk) 06:37, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
FAC Mentoring
[edit]Hi. I'm aware that you're are a member of FAC mentoring list. As so I am kindly requesting your help in promoting A Crow Looked at Me, if possible. Nothing particular just a general overview. It's currently undergoing an open peer review so you may wish to consult that or contribute. Thank you all the same. DMT biscuit (talk) 10:43, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hey DMT biscuit, thanks for reaching out. I'll try my best to take a look at it; I've already dropped a few suggestions about the lede on the PR page. Things are a little busy (it seems they always are) right now, but I'll try to do a more in-depth pass at the whole thing in a bit, if that's OK. Feel free to bug me if I neglect my duties and don't take a peek in the next week or so.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:08, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank You for taking this up. I'll look over your suggestions. DMT biscuit (talk) 18:52, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

- Yes, thanks for reaching out! I added a few more comments. I'm a little busier than I thought I was going to be, so you probably can close down the PR, as I don't know if I can get to it anymore atm. That said, feel free to bug me every few weeks or so and I can try to take a stab at some sections piecemeal and just relay my thoughts directly to you.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:32, 15 October 2020 (UTC) I know that's not as structured, but I still do want to help.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:32, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Polite attacks
[edit]You may have worded your comment politely, but inserting yourself into a conversation for no reason but to say you don't like my turn of phrase and think I'm ignorant is still an attack. Leave me alone from now on if that's something you make a habit of doing, it's not constructive and you clearly didn't know the issues you were stepping into: you heard one side of the story from an editor with a history of civility issues and who decided to take his grievances out of the discussion and context they were in to complain at the first user who shows up. Why on earth did you think it was appropriate to engage in the shit-talking of an issue you weren't involved in, regarding named editors who weren't informed they were being shit on, and then follow that up by hunting down the editors to rant at them?! Consider this a non-template warning for civility. Kingsif (talk) 22:37, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- They asked about what happened and I explained. End of story. They have every right to enter the discussion. I stand by them in this respect. You can say I have a "history of civility issues," and I won't disagree with that. I am working on improving that. Even so, I would also say you aren't the most civil person either as you have shown in your interactions with me. --Historyday01 (talk) 23:22, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Kingsif Unfortunately, I don't really know anything about shit-talking. (I enjoy biology, but it was never really my calling.) If you're looking for info, might I recommend John Gregory Bourke seminal Scatalogic Rites of All Nations (1891)? It looks like a good resource.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 00:21, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Ha, that's a really good comeback, Gen Quon! Yeah, biology was never my calling either (I mean I studied poli sci and history in college for gosh sakes), even though my mom is a naturalist now and I enjoy bird watching or walks in the park, along with kayaking, hiking, etc. I'll have to check out that resource too.Historyday01 (talk) 14:45, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Historyday01 Also, did you say you have an MLIS? I'm actually in library school right now!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 18:08, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Cool! Yeah, you are remembering right. I got my degree over a year ago (I earned it on December 17, 2019) at this point. Almost all of my classes were online, actually, and I somehow got a graduate assistantship which paid for all my tuition. So, that was nice. Is there any concentration in library studies that you are focused on (or interested in)? I focused on Archives and Digital Curation concentration, although its probably called something different at other schools. Historyday01 (talk) 18:52, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- I'm actually interested in fan activity on Wikipedia! (That's not an official 'concentration', but I am taking some classes at another institution to earn a certificate in film and media.) I'm actually getting ready to put together a dissertation proposal, and I basically want to study the info behavior of fans on here like you and me. As such, I might be reaching out in the near future!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 18:56, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, that's cool. Sorry for not responding sooner. There is definitely a lot to study on here. Feel free to reach out to me for sure! Historyday01 (talk) 16:44, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Notice about another user and other stuff
[edit]Some other user got annoyed when I cited Anime News Network to cite a lesbian couple on two pages (the one on lesbian anime characters and the list of LGBTQ characters in animated series 2020-Present) and tried to reverse it... They tried to say that it isn't a reliable source, despite the fact that I wasn't citing the ANN encyclopedia, which has obviously been proven to not be reliable. I've read through all those discussions and try to read through them when adding sources. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know about that, in case they try to make some disruptive edits in the future. Also, I don't know if you have been following it, but Vivienne Medrano's Helluva Boss, an animated web series with a heck ton of LGBTQ characters, had their recent ep (which is pretty wild and blood-filled I must tell you, but its really good with a great voice cast, animation, and some musical numbers) age-restricted by YouTube and then Newgrounds said they'd host the uncensored episode. Medrano and her crew were handed a victory as YouTube backed down and removed the age restriction, but I'd be interested to see if the show moves to Newgrounds, leading possibly to two types of eps, a censored one on YouTube and an uncensored one on Newgrounds. So, we'll see what happens! --Historyday01 (talk) 16:54, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Historyday01: I'm not super familiar with the editorial guidelines of the Anime News Network, but in the past I've seen it used as a source; if you're using an edited review article (which, indeed you were), I don't see anything wrong with it. It's fairly common for folks to argue about the reliability of sites like that, and unfortunately, the Wikipedia:Reliable sources hasn't been completely explicit about the status of ANN, as far as I can tell. In Xezbeth's defense, I will say that some users are really curt when they edit, which can come across as combative. Some are also inclined to dig in when others pile on them. In the future, I'd recommend not using phrasing like "What is wrong with you?" 'cuz that can sometimes cause tensions to boil over. (I'm saying all of this from experience, haha. I've done the same stuff!) But on the flip side, I totally get the frustration of having your work reverted with a pithy message that just says something like "no." That stinks. Doubly so when you're working on material that has historically been marginalized on sites like this.
- I hadn't heard of Helluva Boss before, but I'm intrigued with the drama going on. I wonder if Newgrounds is going to use this as a way to springboard back into the mainstream. I know they're still around, but I don't think they have near as much of a presence in pop culture as they used to.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:12, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll try to not use that phrasing in the future, you are right. As for Newgrounds, it is possible they are using this to springboard back into the mainstream and Medrano seemed supportive of their author. I think it would be really big for them if Helluva Boss was on the site, considering the number of views the series has got on YouTube. And if Helluva Boss is going on there, I wouldn't be surprised if Medrano's other project, Hazbin Hotel, wouldn't follow suit. I hadn't heard from Newgrounds either, but they really jumped into this dispute at the right point. From what I'm aware, YouTube age-restricted the video, even though other Helluva Boss episodes have included a warning and haven't been age restricted. That's what I can gather from her tweets and from those on the crew of the show. Historyday01 (talk) 17:31, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Historyday01: It makes a lot of sense to me for Newgrounds to fight to host this sort of stuff. It seems like a win-win for them. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any info, 'cuz I feel like this could be a big deal.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 01:13, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- It definitely seems like a win-win, I agree. I'll see if I find anything else on it as well, because, yes, it could be a big deal. Historyday01 (talk) 02:36, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello again
[edit]I rarely use Wikipedia these days, but I just logged in after a long absence and saw your old message from September. Sorry for the delay in answering. It was nice hearing in from you again, almost nostalgic in a sense from a time when I was quite passionate about editing here. It was indeed a shame the FAC mods were such useless twats, they really destroyed any enthusiasm I had for editing here. I'm glad to see you're still doing well. FAC mentor
[edit]I saw you are a mentor when it comes to music articles for FA. I was wondering if you could please help me with prose issues for Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon? I really want the article to be FA. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 08:13, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- @The Ultimate Boss: Sure thing! For the last few years I've been a little more swamped than I would normally like, which has cut into some of my Wikipedia time, but I've been meaning to dive back in. Are there specific areas that you'd like me to look at/consider? Or do you just want some initial pointers before beginning a deeper dive? I'm comfortable with whatever you think you need.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:42, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- Perfect! Thank you so much! What I need help on the most is prose issues. I'm just finishing up the lyrics and music section for the article. I'll let you know when I am done with that section so you can review it. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 20:53, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- @The Ultimate Boss: That works for me, just drop me a message, or ping me and I'll be more than happy to check it out. Just out of general curiosity (since I always enjoy hearing folks talk about things they care about), what inspired you to work on this article?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:01, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- The reason that inspired to work on the article was after Pop Smoke was murdered at the age of 20 during a home invasion. It made me really sad because he just started blowing up. He is only 3 years older than me. The album's title "Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon" has a special meaning to me as well. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 21:07, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- @The Ultimate Boss: Oh gosh, I didn't know that; that's horrible. 20 is faaaaaaaar too young. :( Hopefully this wasn't too much of an uncomfortable question. I admire your efforts to immortalize his work in a way, though!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 21:12, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- You are totally fine to ask any questions :). If you read his article, I added a lot of info about his death you may find interesting. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 21:16, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- I was wondering if you could actually help me with "Dior (song)"? Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon is still going to take a while as I am searching for the song's music and lyrics. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 04:46, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- I have finally finished all the sections for Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. Are you still willing to help me improve the article to FA standards? The Ultimate Boss (talk) 05:01, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

- OK, the lede says "Shortly before the album's release, his family announced they would take on the non-profit Shoot for the Stars Foundation that Pop Smoke had begun to set up before his death." But I can't find this discussed in the body of the text. Am I missing it? Also, what does "take on" mean?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:19, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

R. A. B. Mynors
[edit]Hello Gen. Quon, I hope you are doing fine. I'm writing you because I noticed you were the FA nominator for Cento Vergilianus de laudibus Christi. I'm currently nominating a biography on the classicist R. A. B. Mynors at FAC. - No problem! I'm glad I could help. Good luck with the nomination. Even if the nom closes with no consensus, the article is strong enough to make it as a FA. Sometimes it just takes a few submissions.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 16:45, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

[edit]DYK for PMA (All Time Low song)
[edit]On 18 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article PMA (All Time Low song), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the All Time Low song "PMA" features guest vocals from Heather Baron-Gracie of the British band Pale Waves? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/PMA (All Time Low song). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, PMA (All Time Low song)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

[edit]This is to let you know that the Home (The X-Files) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 11, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 11, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

[edit]Boëthius' Consolation
[edit]Hello, Thank you for your edit on Adventure Time. I saw on your user page that you want to "Clean up; expand; [and] promote" the article for Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy "to [being a] good article." Having just read the work as part of taking a course in Medieval philosophy, I believe that I can help if you want me to. What is your favorite part of the work? I, personally, liked the prosimetrical format and Lady Philosophy's argument that gaining something may constitute a loss of something else. In trying to gain money, for example, one has to give up their time in order to accrue it. --Joesom333 (talk) 21:58, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hey Joesom333! That's a great question, and I'm delighted to see others hoping to dig into the work! It's been a moment since I've read Boëthius, but I remember being very interested in his approach to theodicy and his argument for why God seeing all doesn't negate free will. I was hoping to work on Consolation of Philosophy years ago, so its mention on the visiting scholars page is a bit of an artifact, but I'd be delighted to try and help in whatever ways I can!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:56, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
OK! That would be great! First, I think that we must figure out what the page needs. Joesom333 (talk) 00:06, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- Good point. From looking at it right now, I'd say a more robust section contextualizing the work might be useful, and of course, the section on the work itself can probably be greatly expanded. Perhaps each book could even be broken into their own subheadings?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 17:01, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
Each book having its own subheading sounds like a good idea. Do we need to get consensus? Joesom333 (talk) 19:10, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- I usually favor the WP:BOLD approach of just doing it. If anyone wants to sass us after the fact, we can also discuss it then.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:22, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
OK, let us start soon. Happy New Year!Joesom333 (talk) 17:18, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Joesom333: Are there any books about the work that you are interested in working with? I work at an academic library and have access to a whole slew of 'em; I just found a slim (for a monography, that is) volume from Oxford UP about Boethius himself that might be useful. Just let me know! (I should have a Wikipedia email link activated.)--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Update: Here are four books that I've found which look like they'll be quite helpful:
- Boethius (1973). "Theological Tractates" and the "Consolation of Philosophy". Loeb Classical Library. Translated by Stewart, H. F., Rand, E. K., Tester, S. J. Harvard University Press.
- Boethius (2008). The Consolation of Philosophy. Translated by Slavitt, D. R. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.
- Let me know whatcha think!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 15:21, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

That looks good! I, too, have access to an academic library. I read Loeb Classical Library's edition which is a side-by-side Latin-to-English translation. The article The Official Music of "Weird Al" Yankovic has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Not notable.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. – AssumeGoodWraith (talk | contribs) 09:57, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Research
[edit]Sure, after all my college thesis was about Wikipedia (maybe I should translate it someday) and I have helped with another one of those, don't remember when. Even if the WP:TOP25 and other things such made me edit less articles, have enough things to tell about the subject. igordebraga ≠ 05:50, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: You might've helped me out back in the day when I was writing this; either way, would love your input. Shall I switch to the wiki-interview interface for further details?--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 14:23, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Am I supposed to answer in that page with your outline or send you an e-mail? igordebraga ≠ 15:46, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: My bad! I meant "wiki-email" interface. Sorry about that. What I should've said: Can I shoot you an email about the further details?--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 16:18, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Go ahead, do it. igordebraga ≠ 16:19, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: I just wanted to check to see if the email went through. I'm paranoid about sending an email to the wrong person and having them be mad at me, haha.--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 19:27, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- I received it! igordebraga ≠ 23:30, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: Perfect, just wanted to check. I'm always paranoid that I'll send stuff to the wrong person with the email function, haha.--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 14:36, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Igordebraga: I just sent a quick bit of extra info to your email!--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 15:08, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

happy to help!
[edit]Feel free to send an email with the details :) Just for the record, I kept scrolling down your userpage, expecting the list of GAs to just end somewhere- holy crap, that's impressive. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 20:56, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: Hooray! I have sent you an email. As for the GAs, in a previous life I once had more energy... and more free time, haha! (If only I had the same amount of energy now that I'm working on my dissertation!)--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 22:26, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: Just wanted to check and see if the email went through! (As the previous post on my talk page attests, I'm never convinced I did it right, haha.)--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 14:56, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi! Yes, thanks, I got it :) rest assured, I'm interested, but stuff's gotten hectic recently. Should have a response soon! theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 21:58, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: No worries! And good to hear; just wanted to be safe. Thanks!--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 22:00, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

I'll drop a message here rather than create a new section, I'd also be interested in helping any way I can if you can shoot me an email as well. I am currently an undergraduate college student so I may be unavailable here and there, but I'll do my best! TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:40, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

From The Horror, The Horror
[edit]Hello Gen. Quon. Thank you for asking me to be part of your research. I wish I could help but as you can see I havent been in Wikipedia for over a month since with a family it's hard to find time. I have only a little while today and I want to use it for my first edit since Feb. 3. I wish you luck and success! The Horror, The Horror (talk) 22:24, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
