Ramona splashing in the fountain

Hello! I noticed your recent edit to Grant Park. The photo on the page of the Ramona statue clearly shows that the statue is not splashing in a fountain. Was there once a fountain there, or is the source wrong? Regards, Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 07:29, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

  • The source is correct. The fountain is just not turned on when that pic was taken. But the Falcon Guide source reports she is splashing in the fountain. I confirmed this as well, while playing there with my daughter earlier today! Cheers! --Gaff ταλκ 07:33, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
I see— looking at another picture I took that day (not uploaded here) I can see that there is indeed a perforated slab in the middle of the concrete that could be a fountain, but apparently it isn't turned on in the winter. I should visit Portland more often in the summer! Thanks & regards, Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 07:43, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Dear Gaff,

I have made the required edits to Rakesh Khanna's page. I have also added few new sections and diluted the language a bit.

Can you please help me clear the "flag"/"notifications" for this page.

I very much doubt that you will get that through at DYK. But well done being bold to submit it. If I can help in any way to scrub this up, let me know. I don't know much about bees but I know a lot about editing.

A tag has been placed on FoodiesCompass, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an acceptable page. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item G11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this page is not blatant advertising, . Clicking that button will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. You are welcome to edit the page to fix this problem, but please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. As well as removing promotional phrasing, it helps to add factual encyclopaedic information to the page, and add citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the page will be verifiable. FoodiesCompass is an online food restaurant guide and food travel agency concept in India. Unlike others this website gives user an added advantage of pre-booking their tickets, I mean food. Already it has 200 restaurants in its rosters and that too only in Gurgaon, a city at the hub of National Capital Region in India with an area of just 738.8 km square. It shows the pace at which the company is getting fame for its unique idea.

The vision of the company's ceo is innovative and sort of new in India's Food porn sector. Maybe the content of its wikipedia page offers promotion but honestly speaking to turn this page into a biographical piece we need awareness of such an unique idea. Once the page is created, with such ideas the company will blossom through more food friendly cultures.

I am gathering more sources by the way. Let me know if the idea looks great.

Question about DYK process

Hi, Gaff - I was just wondering about the order for reviewing DYK noms. I did a DYK self-nom for American paddlefish back on Sept 4 right after it made GA. It is now under review for FA. The Bowfin article I nominated much later was reviewed first. Is there no chronological order to reviewing articles? If not, how long is an unreviewed article to remain on the list of noms before it is reviewed? AtsmeConsult 19:07, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

@Atsme: I've only done two DYK noms. The first one Megachile campanulae had a nice photograph to go with it (like your bowfin), and was reviewed almost immediately. The second one, Cream-spotted cardinalfish does not have a photo and has been sitting for a few days unreviewed. So, the common denominator seems that interesting photos and/or really good hooks get the attention. As far as how long they sit around, I'm not sure, but the back-log on the page goes back quite a ways. I'll take a look at your other article; maybe we can help each other out. Also, since you have some experience boosting articles to GA status, can you look at the Megachile campanulae article for me? I'm wondering if it is something worth trying to build up to GA status, since it is really just an obscure resin bee... Thank you. Gaff ταλκ 20:01, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Absolutely. Collaboration gives me energy. AtsmeConsult 21:31, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the review on paddlefish - it was quickly moved into the que. I'm not sure how the que thingy works, but posted my question at the Bowfin DYK since it still remains open. Also, I've been busy reading your article and doing a little research to see how best it could be expanded. I think you've done a great job so far. I came across the following: [1], and [2], and thought a section on human interaction, and a section on parasites, diseases and pesticides would be useful to readers. AtsmeConsult 13:34, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for that advice & encouragement. The bowfin DYK should get taken care of. I'm not 100% sure how the procedure unfolds, yet... Gaff ταλκ 15:41, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Template:Kk requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

Hi Gaff, I would like to improve the deleted article, how can I do some changes? Do I have to create a completly new article? --Fanny Dürfeldt (talk) 07:36, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

@Fanny Dürfeldt: It's not much fun when your article gets deleted. I know from experience. I am not an administrator, so Ididn't delete the article and cannot "undelete." I was simply the editor who did the review. The concerns were listed on the tags placed on your talk page. The tag from me was generated automatically when the article was tagged. The other one is from the administrator, Jimfbleak - talk to me?. He can possibly get you a copy of the article. It can;t hurt to ask. The major concerns were that it was too closely word-for-word or "tightly paraphrased" from the company website and that it read like a promo or "spam." Aim for an objective, encyclopedic tone and include lots of references to sources other than the company web-site. Review WP:GNG for general notability guidelines, WP:CORP for guidelines about companies, and WP:MOS for guidelines on style for writing the articles. You may want to find something totally objective to work on for your first few artcles, like a city park, a plant, flower, or insect... Hopefully that is some help! Gaff ταλκ 12:26, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
@Gaff:, I've already declined to restore, because that isn't acceptable for copyright violations, see her talk page Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:33, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Gaff, there were no multiple accounts so SPI is inappropriate--well, in a way there were, but you couldn't have known: that same article was created 7 years ago by a different account. Anyway, the persistent recreation of an article can be reported at WP:AIV and/or you can ask for the deleted article to be salted, at WP:RFPP. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:38, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Values Modes

Hi there,

I wrote this article. As a social researcher Values Modes is a tool something I've come across and used a lot in work for charities/ local authorities etc, and is something which I felt didn't have enough of an online presence. The article was an attempt to rectify this.

It seems like something which is particularly salient at the moment, because - thanks to the rise of UKIP - quite a lot of political strategists on the left are using the tool (most notably in the case of the IPPR paper cited in the document, but in other spaces too).

I myself believe the model has genuine academic usage and practical application, and am broadly speaking a believer in the methodology behind it. However, it is not the only model of it's kind and so, to ensure it's completely balanced, I have just gone in and added a short section about 'criticism and alternative methods'.

I am a first time editor of Wikipedia so apologies if any of my footnoting was shoddy. I thought all of the citations I used did discuss Values Modes though, with the exception, perhaps of the 'Revolt on the Left' paper, which alludes but doesn't refer by name. Happy to amend/ remove...

Thanks! Chris

Clarkechris66 (talk) 14:20, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

  • Hi Gaff, a couple of quick questions, as you were the person that officially flagged my Values Modes page. I firstly just wondered how long it generally takes to come to a view about deletion? Is my page still in danger of being taken down, do you think? Secondly, when I type "Values Modes" into Google the Wikipedia page doesn't come up. I wondered if this is because the page hasn't been given the formal Wikipedia thumbs up yet, or if it's for another reason...? Any advice you were able to give very much appreciated - as I said before I'm a bit of a novice! Thanks, Clarkechris66 (talk) 09:26, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Clarkechris66: discussions are typically open about a week. If after the week is up, it may get relisted, marked as no consensus (keep by default), deleted, or simply kept. If you can get another reference or two up to the topic, either secondary or tertiary is best, it will help your chances a lot. Maybe chapters, etc from Poli-Sci texts? Try google books search? Hope that helps! Gaff ταλκ 13:29, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
  • That's great new - thanks Gaff. I've put in a couple more sources from slightly more academic places anyway, which should help, and I'll ask some of the people I've worked with in the past, who will know VM better than me, to help strengthen the page too. Cheers! Clarkechris66 (talk) 14:53, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

PanydThe muffin is not subtle 13:16, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi There. You created an article about a living person (presumed living since he published in 2014) but left it in such a disarray it's almost worth deleting right off. You state links from other Wikipedia pages to claim notability, but that is insufficient per Wikipedia's notability policy. Please review the notability requirements for scientists and seek to establish secondary notability, otherwise it appears to be a fan page. I don't doubt that Fraser has published many articles, but that alone may not be notable enough, since publishing is what normal scientists do. You can find more tips at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. Cheers. --Animalparty-- (talk) 19:04, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

  • @Animalparty: I've got too many of other projects to work on right now. If nobody in the WikiProject Fish community wants/needs this article, then have it deleted. It cleared up a lot of red links on a lot of pages for those articles, so that is why it was created. I'm not sure how it's a "fan page." I don't know the guy. I know nothing about fish. I am not sure how much of a fan anyone really is of a fish scientist. If you find the article objectionable you can either a) clean it up or b) propose it at AfD unless you can find an admin to CSD:A7 -- for which it fails criteria since it reads that he is notable and there is enough to at least support it not getting an A7. It might get you a delete at AfD. Happy editing! Gaff ταλκ 21:01, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks I'll do what I can and bring it up on WP Fish. I meant fan page as in an article created without due consideration of the person's notability to the world at large (e.g. of interest to only a select few), and meant nothing derogatory. I don't believe all taxon authors need linking, and not all red-links are notable topics. Cheers. --Animalparty-- (talk) 22:00, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
  • I think he is a big fish in a small pond. According to the Australian Museum webiste, "He is a world expert on the taxonomy of Cardinalfishes." There are probably not many of those around, so I think that makes him notable. I will leave your notability tag on the page for a week, but unless there is a reason the page should not be up, I will take the tag down.Gaff ταλκ 22:16, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Inflorescences of Carduus argentatus

If you don't object, I would like to do some editing to your article Carduus argentatus because there are some other botanical problems I didn't mention. As you say, it is a really nice photo and the hook is interesting. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:43, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

@Cwmhiraeth: You have really an amazing list of contributions. I would appreciate any assistance that you can give and the article will certainly benefit. (It isn't technically "my article" since we don't really WP:Own anything here, but thank you for asking before barreling through). It will be an education to watch you at work. I wound up starting this article because I'm an amateur beekeeper and liked the picture of the bee Eucera cinnamomea. (That article is on my to-do list). Gaff ταλκ 20:01, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
I did a bit of copyediting, particularly of the description, nothing special! About the "remarkable" feature, I think the Encyclopaedia Londinensis is referring to the fact that several Egyptian plants have white spots rather than that this plant is particularly remarkable. What do you think? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 21:23, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
Looks good @Cwmhiraeth:. I agree with you about the "remarkable" comment. I tried to make it sound interesting in the DYK hook, without stretching the truth or sensationalizing. I think that it is a fair comment as written. There is another image (for the article , not the hook), if you think it would help without cluttering the article. It could be cropped to better highlight the inflorecences. Gaff ταλκ 22:11, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
The image shows the whole plant and its habit of growth so it would be a pity to crop it. I'll leave a note on the DYK nomination page, but someone independent will be needed to review the nomination and they may or may not think the hook suitable. If you need any help with the bee article, you're welcome to ask. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:14, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about List of pollinators of Oregon

Hello, Gaff,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether List of pollinators of Oregon should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of pollinators of Oregon .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks, Vanjagenije (talk) 16:25, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter

Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone!

Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here!

Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Candidates can nominate themselves or others from December 01, 00:01 (UTC), until December 15, 23:59. The voting period will run from December 16, 00:01 (UTC), until December 31, 23:59. You can read about coordinators' duties here. Please consider getting involved and remember to cast you vote—it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself!

Thank you all once again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve anything without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis.

I've moved your question to the talk page, because the main page is for graphic requests. I have also responded to it, there. Just a friendly head's up. :) MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 21:08, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

I don't know why, but I could have sworn you posted that to the main page instead of the talk page. Ignore my previous message, except the part about responding. Sorry about that. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 21:10, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
