Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

disruptive editing on Google Translate

A user called Juansantos123 keeps adding adding languages that aren't yet supported by Google Translate under the 'Supported languages' section and its 'History' sub-section, even though I've already added a hidden message under that section reminding people not to, and even though I've already reverted 18 of his edits 7 times over the past week and a half. How do I deal with his disruptive editing? -- PK2 (talk) 19:50, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

To give a Dobos torte and spread the WikiLove, just place {{subst:Dobos Torte}} on someone else's talkpage, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Invite to Join WikiProject for Spoken Wikipedia

Hi Fuzheado! I am Galendalia and I have revived the WikiProject for Spoken Wikipedia. I noticed that you signed up at some point to be a participant and as I am reviving this project, one of my tasks is to get the participant list in order. Would you please go to the Participants List and add your name and language(s) you speak? If you are already there and do not want to be, please remove yourself. If you want to remain, please put remain next to your name. If I do not see anything, I will move you to the inactive participant list. I am putting a timeline of 7 days on this action to help keep things moving along. It would also be great if you would be willing to join the task force for Pronunciation that would be awesome, as there are troublesome words we run into.

Thank you for considering joining us. If you decide to leave, I will be sad to see you leave as so many people have done a great job on the recordings and any work you have done makes a significant difference.

On the contrary. Any article that doesn't have references can be deleted at any time. Deb (talk) 11:01, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
@Deb: - I'm also astonished how you can be a supporter of Women in Red and decide to 1) not improve it given her obvious notablity and 2) actively discourage its evolution. Hope you'll decide to pitch in. -- Fuzheado | Talk 11:02, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
And I'm astonished how you don't seem to be up with the current guidelines on biographies of living persons. I'm more than happy to assist but you started an article when you weren't ready and there's no reason why you should expect others to do the work. Deb (talk) 11:04, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Both of you have been around the block here at Wikipedia, so Fuzheado, in future, I would suggest placing the {{under construction}} template on any new stub article you create, so long as you remain improving it. Either that or create a draft to move it into article space later, or develop it in a sandbox. Wyliepedia @ 12:43, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Fuzheado, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Clarification please...

Your closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Derek Chauvin (police officer) justifies speedy deletion by reference to WP:A10 and WP:BLP1E.

  1. BLP1E never used to be a speedy deletion criteria. Can you link me to the discussion when it became a speedy deletion criteria?
  2. A10 is supposed to be used for articles that duplicate existing articles. You didn't say which existing article you thought this article duplicated. Okay, which was it?

Restarting the talk on Killing of George Floyd - "The title should be renamed to "Murder of George Floyd" to be more respectful."

When Bellezzasolo said 'While murder isn't appropriate for an ongoing investigation, "killing" seems an appropriate description of events, and is backed up by a reliable source. On the other hand, other sources call it a "death"', the death of George Floyd was still investigating. But now we know it is a murder, and that police was sentenced to jail. I think you should restart the talk on Killing of George Floyd that you closed, 'The title should be renamed to "Murder of George Floyd" ...'. --Herobrine303 (talk) 13:57, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Herobrine303, It's still an ongoing investigation. The officers may have been charged with murder, but they're innocent until proven guilty. The coroner's report concluded it was a homicide, so it being a killing is accurate. But that doesn't mean that the killing was unlawful - that's for a court of law to decide. And decide whether it was manslaughter, 3rd degree murder, or 2nd degree murder.
Until such a time, re-titling the page to murder would be wildly inappropriate, and would potentially be libelous towards the officers involved.
Until such a time, and with support from reliable sources, that's just not going to happen. Bellezzasolo Discuss 16:37, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

When I wrote my comment on Talk:8′46″ § Requested move 10 June 2020, your level of involvement was unknown to me. Please join the discussion at Talk:8′46″ § Requested move 10 June 2020.

I really can't believe that you've made this kind of error? Wikipedia:Mistakes are allowed, but I'm sorry Fuzheado, you're stretching my credulity. I hope to hear from you soon, as to why your best defense of your title is admin tools, and not talk page discussion. I can't believe your level of involvement...I don't know how much more I want to push this, given the power imbalance between us. I'm sorry I did not bring this to your talk page first per WP:ADMINABUSE, the mistake you've made in this article title is so obviously out-MOS:UNITS and out-MOS:CURLY that I did not even think to check that you'd done it, and just assumed it was some good faith new user who got to the page first and now their mistake has been grandfathered in, and you misunderstood the oppositions and in good faith reverted what you saw as an improper close. I'm not trying to be mean, this is truly why I never suspected you, an administrator.

I have never had a problem with your reopen, by the way. My main problem was you moving the page back to a title no one agrees with, it seems, except apparently you, although this wasn't clear when you reopened, that you are the main seemingly only supporter of the curly quotes. Indeed, the page could have simply persisted at 8 minutes and 46 seconds with a reopened discussion, and then if some further name became preferred, e.g. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds, it could be moved there instead. Right? So, from a page title only you seem to like, to a page title that had broad support, to whatever is ultimately the consensus.

I still believe this could all be a misunderstanding, and that you have a very good reason for not discussing it, and not !voting for your own preferred option, or rebutting others' points regarding the MOS. There's WP:NODEADLINE, and I don't know that it's worth my time to pursue an WP:AN/I thread on this.

WP:RM states Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request. WP:RMRELIST also, The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors. Although as stated repeatedly, I don't mind the reopen, I mind the move back, I can't see how in this case this shouldn't apply to reopening, given your level of involvement. It definitely should apply to moving the page back.

Also looping in: Bagumba. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 23:36, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

I'm not interested in arguing. You did not respect the 7 days that is prescribed by the policy for requested moves WP:RM. That was an error. You declared it a SNOW CLOSE when it did not satisfy the basics of the Wikipedia:Snowball_clause#The_snowball_test. That was another error. Undoing the entire operation and resetting the name to the pre-debate name (ie. a total revert) is the proper thing to do until the process runs its course. There is no urgency to move the title, so allowing the productive discussion to happen is the proper way to proceed. I currently have no strong opinions about the naming, including the original name or the curly quotes or the alternatives that are being discussed. We should all respect the process. Thanks. -- Fuzheado | Talk 23:56, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
