York/Leander

I don't particularly mean to debate the essentials of what class comes first, or what class can be considered just a run on from a preceding class, but I strongly feel that we should be consistent. At the moment, our List of cruiser classes of the Royal Navy lists light cruisers together in the order that they developed, and the heavy cruisers in the same style, but seperate from an independent to the other classes. I feel it would be a mistake to try and link across these divides. If they were originally classed as light cruisers, then they should be listed together as such and the links made within the wider class. If we try and link between a light cruiser class and then a heavy cruiser, then back to a light cruiser, etc. then we are creating a confusing situation and where really do you draw the line, in that it's a short step from linking from light cruiser to heavy cruiser to battleship to minesweeper to submarine classes which I definately think is too confusing, so I'd be in favour of changing it back to how it was before. Last battle of the battleship Bismarck - Damage to Rodney

Hello, Emoscopes!

Thank you for pointing out that a citation was needed for the sttatement that HMS Rodney was damaged during her engagement with Bismarck. Unfortunately, I have been to busy to do much work on Wikipedia lately, and did not get round to adding my reference before you deleted the statement. I was surprised that you charcterised the statement as 'disinformation'; even had the statement been proved to be wrong, it seems a little harsh to imply that it was inserted in bad faith.

I have now restored the statement to the text (though not to the infobox, where it seems to me inappropriate), and added an explanatory section to the talk page. If you still have a problem with this, can I suggest that you post to the Talk page?

"Caspian sea monster"

Hi. At Caspian you defined the "Caspian sea monster" as a "wing-in-ground effect vehicle", which I can't understand. Does that mean "winged ground-effect vehicle", maybe? —JerryFriedman (Talk) 23:13, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, that helped. It sure is a confusing name. I gather it's saying that the wings are in the ground effect, which doesn't make sense to us uninitiated people. I think it should be written "wing-in-ground-effect vehicle", instead of the two ways it's hyphenated at Wing-In-Ground effect vehicle, and I may suggest that at the article, which also needs a whole bunch of redirects. —JerryFriedman (Talk) 04:20, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

3-view / ortho |thumb| use

Just wanted to let you know that if an image isn't thumbnailed, it actually lists the caption in the title="" tag, which is supported by all browsers on hover, rather than the alt="" tag, which you are correct in saying is not. The section looks much cleaner without the thumbnail frame, and 3-views generally need no captions; if being viewed in a text-only browser, the title tag is substituted anyway. ericg ✈ 17:33, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Without knowing how many people use popups, I couldn't say how many people this would "affect", it's just always been my practice to put images in as thumbs so that the caption / description is visible to all as there's nothing more infuriating than an image in a book that doesnt say what it is! 6 of those are unique namespaces. For Devil's Staircase (with capital on the "S"), there are 4 unique namespaces liking there. It seems a fair solution therefore to make a Devil's Staircase disambiguation to which the above can redirect, and link to both Aonach Eagach and Singluar function from there. I have seen the template several times but always in Firefox. Today I noticed that in IE there is no way to view the contents when it's used in an article. Portal:Computer generated imagery

...exists. Please help to improve this Portal - the scope is anything that is generated on computer without a sensor. The Topics section is the only part at first draft. Recent move on F.2

I see that you moved the Metrovick F.2 article to Metropolitan-Vickers F.2, stating that the former is not a real name. However, Metropolitan-Vickers often used "Metrovick" as a brand name for many of their products, for instance, the Metrovick 950. The name in question appears, in the original form, on what I believe is the only surviving example of the engine, at the Science Museum. So, are you sure the engine isn't actually called "Metrovick F.2"? Really sure? Or did you just assume this based on prior examples? Maury (talk) 11:46, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

The company was called Metropolitan-Vickers. What I am sure is that the engine was called just the F.2. I was merely following what I perceive to be policy of giving unambiguous article names that avoid contractions or abbreviations. There's really nothing more to read into it than that. Therefore I moved it to Metropolitan-Vickers F.2, just like we have Rolls-Royce Merlin and not R-R Merlin or Rolls Merlin. Emoscopes ^Talk 17:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

Deltic animated image

The rather nice animation File:Napier deltic animation large.gif, which I believe you created, has been removed from the Napier Deltic article as it's claimed to be "wrong". There's some discussion of this on Talk:Napier Deltic, most of which seems to involve the operation of the "camshafts"_(sic). As far as I can see, all that's wrong is the position of the inlet/exhaust manifolds on one bank. Is there any possibility of correcting this, so that this highly useful (and rather pretty!) animation can be re-added. Thanks Andy Dingley (talk) 00:23, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

hello. Way back in 2006 you made an edit to the laforey class destroyer page, here [[2]]

This says that the two ships fitted with fully geared turbines were laforey and leonidas. I have just been reading about this in 'The grand fleet' by David Brown, where he says the two ships with geared turbines were Leonidas and Lucifer. I dont know if you could still check your information to sort out who is right? The construction data given in the article says that Leonidas and Lucifer were the only two ships built by Parsons, who made the geared turbines, so I would guess from this that Laforey is wrong. "Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive

Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards.
