Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Emilyjohnson1986. Thanks for disclosing here that you are being paid by RNN.

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

With regard to disclosure would you please clarify - are you an employee of RNN, an employee of a marketing or PR firm that has been contracted by RNN, or a freelancer?

Also please be aware that:

  1. We expect paid editors to disclose at their user page, and also locally, at talk pages of articles and drafts. (see for example the talk page disclosure I added here, on your behalf. Not sure that is correct per my question above, but I wanted to show you what it looks like)
  2. Editors with a COI (including paid editors) should not edit existing articles directly, as you did here for example, but should post suggestions on the relevant talk page, for independent editors to review and implement. You can use the {{request edit}} tag to flag the proposal for review.
  3. You seem to have figured out, that you should put drafts of new articles through AfC. Thanks for doing that. But you should disclose that you were paid to work on it, on the associated talk page, before you submit.

Also, you appear to be somewhat confused as to the mission of WP. Wikipedia not a proxy for any organization's own website, nor a direct outlet for its public relations people. Wikipedia articles should be based primarily on what independent sources say about things, for a bunch of reasons. If you like, please read User:Jytdog/How for an explanation of Wikipedia's mission, how the community realizes it. There is also guidance there for drafting new articles.

Please do reply about your employer. If you have any questions about the process laid out above for managing conflict of interest, please let me know! You can reply here, just below. Jytdog (talk) 14:40, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit to Rotherham College, for two main reasons. First because the content you added was promotional in tone as well as unsourced; and secondly, because as noted above, as an editor with a conflict of interest you should be requesting changes on the article's talk page rather than directly editing it. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on RNN Group, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved.

At this point I have run out of alternatives. You don't appear to be engaging with people at all, and your editing is entirely promotional. Guy (Help!) 12:58, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have to endorse Guy's block. We don't do this to punish people or throw our weight around; but you need to respond and discuss issues with your editing; since you haven't, we've been left with no alternative than a block which forces you to discuss. Hopefully you can respond on this talk page and see that the articles you have written have had numerous problems. There are places you can go for assistance, like the Teahouse (a message board for new editors), but you can't just ignore people as if nothing's happening.

In terms of what you've been writing, I've had a look around to see if I can write a reasonable article on RNN Group, but the only source I can find is this one, and I need to find sustained and regular news or magazine coverage before I can do a proper job.
