User talk:Elana Barker
Welcome!
[edit]Hello, Elana Barker, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Solidarity (South African trade union), which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.
To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.
One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)
In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

If you benefit in any way from editing Solidariteit
[edit]you must comply with WP:PAID. I note that you have been accused of marketing and misrepresenting sources at af.wiki. Doug Weller talk 14:43, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Please do not remove content or templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Solidarity (South African trade union), without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your content removal does not appear to be constructive and has been reverted. If you only meant to make a test edit, please use the sandbox for that. If you wish to make such major changes not only do we need to know if you have any relationship with the union, you really need to discuss them on the talk page first. Thanks. [edit]Please do not add or change content, as you did at Laurika Rauch, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. - Arjayay (talk) 15:57, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, Elana Barker. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Laurika Rauch, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Dl2000 (talk) 22:20, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Request reason:
I'm being paid by a company, Maroela Media, to promote the Afrikaans language, especially doing articles for school children so that they can do their research in their own language. I was blocked because I made use of OCR to put on 2 old encyclopedias. We looked into it and called for legal advice and the lawyers from Fischer and Spoor said that the publications has lost their copyrights because it is older than 20 years and that we may proceed to publish it, as it is in the public's best interest to share the knowledge. I also want to undersign that I am a paid contributor, but because I'm being blocked, I can't sign that document. Can you please assist in this matter? Regards, Elana --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 21:15, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Decline reason:
As per below. You've been violating WP:COI, WP:PAID, and WP:PROMO in Laurika Rauch. This isn't just promoting the Afrikaans language. You also appear to have been violating WP:COPYRIGHT but this does not make up part of the reason for your block. Yamla (talk) 10:14, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- You can't keep me blocked because of the article "Laurika Rauch", it is an South African singer that phoned me and walked me through all the mistakes on the English Wikipedia of her article. There were several factual mistakes that I corrected to make the article better. For that you block me? I really do not understand. Elana Barker (talk) 16:20, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- My reply carried over from UTRS. I will confer with the blocking admin on your talk page. In the interest of saving time and energy, I will copy your request there. I do not see the scanned encyclopedia as an issue on your talk page. We can discuss that on your talk page. You don't really need to sign a document (as far as I know). Just follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Paid-contribution_disclosure#How_to_disclose.
- @Yunshui: What say ye? --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 21:15, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
(not the blocking admin) I concur that WP:COPYRIGHT wasn't listed as one of the reasons for the block here. I'm curious, though. Where on earth does copyright last for only 20 years?!? Looking at List of countries' copyright lengths, it's more common to be life + 50 years, or life + 70 years. I'm not saying Elana Barker is incorrect, I've just never heard of such a short copyright term in the 21st century. Nobody asked my opinion, but life + 50 years is crazy long for copyright. --Yamla (talk) 21:41, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- I'll note that copyright in South Africa is life + 50 years according to Copyright_law_of_South_Africa#Copyright_term (though of course, Wikipedia isn't itself a reliable source, see WP:RS). I am only guessing that Elana Barker is in South Africa, though; it's entirely possible they are located elsewhere and talking about different copyright terms. --Yamla (talk) 21:45, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Well, the best bet is to not add material copyrighted elsewhere. UNless it states "public domain" or a compatible license I avoid it. --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 22:07, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Copyright has no relevance to the block. I in fact issued the block since Maroela Media represents Laurika Rauch, where this account has made a number of promotional edits. Since the unblock request above emphatically avoids even mentioning this relationship, I would recommend declining it. Yunshui 雲水 07:19, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Yunshui. I wondered about the phrase, "to promote the Afrikaans language". I would think a condition of unblocking would be to not edit Laurika Rauch directly (just suggesting on the talk page) and another would be the {{{PAID}}} disclosures. --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 10:55, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Good day,
I work for Maroela Media and get paid to put Afrikaans articles on the Afrikaans Wikipedia. There are various subjects where I try to multiply articles: South African actors and artists and the Grade 4 to 7 curriculum so that Afrikaans children can do their research in their own language. Please consider to unblock me. I'm not busy with marketing or promoting the company that I work for, the only thing that I'm promoting is by expanding Afrikaans articles.
