A tag has been placed on William Barr (Arctic historian), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. RyanPostlethwaiteSee the mess I've created or let's have banter 22:52, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the William Barr (Arctic historian) article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

Feel free to re-submit a new version of the article. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later."

You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. You can also leave a message on my talk page.

(Sir) John Franklin

[edit]

You moved "John Franklin" to "Sir John Franklin"; I moved it back. It's not normal here to put titles within article names; thus for example Laurence Olivier rather than "Sir Laurence Olivier".

If you have some particular reason for the rename, please let me know, and let's discuss it before any further renaming. Thanks. -- Hoary 14:07, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For me it is the same - as long as it is done consistently.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:657px-Lincoln Sea map.png, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:657px-Lincoln Sea map.png has a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission, which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:657px-Lincoln Sea map.png itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thanks. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:27, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edits to this article, as all the infomation you added is contained in UEFA Champions League 2007-08 Group Stage. John Hayestalk 09:23, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Native Pig Face, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.apstas.com/carpobrotus.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 11:56, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your article on William Barr. Since you are Norwegian and also interested in Arctic exploration, I wonder whether you could find out who the Norwegian explorer Captain E. Johannesen from Tromsø is. I have found no information about him, but he discovered Uedineniya Island and called it Ensomheden.Mohonu 01:56, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:FramExploration-CanadianFirstDay.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:FramExploration-CanadianFirstDay.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:57, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of The Anchorites

[edit]

A tag has been placed on The Anchorites requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DGG (talk) 08:44, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Mill scale, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/080409/0384949.html, and therefore a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Mill scale and send an email with confirmation of permission to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or that the material is released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Mill scale with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Mill scale.

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at Talk:Mill scale/Temp. Leave a note at Talk:Mill scale saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:03, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In addition to the above "form letter" generated by the template, I just wanted to note that I see you have revised the material some, but unfortunately the article is still an infringement. If you'd like to continue revising, please use the temporary space at Talk:Mill scale/Temp, and the infringing version can be replaced. Alternatively, of course, you can verify permission through one of the processes above. Wikipedia can't use sentences or phrases copied from external sources unless the source is public domain, licensed compatibly with GFDL, or unless our usage meets our non-free content criteria. Feel free to let me know at my talk page if I can be of assistance with this. Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:03, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Vidde

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Vidde requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Eivindgh! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 139 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Removing Speedy at Vestfjorden (Svalbard)

[edit]

Hi Eivindgh, you recently removed a deletion tag from Vestfjorden (Svalbard). Because Wikipedia policy does not allow the creator of the page to remove speedy deletion tags, an automated program has replaced the tag. Although the deletion proposal may be incorrect, removing the tag is not the correct way for you to contest the deletion, even if you are more experienced than the nominator. Instead, please use the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. Remember to be patient, there is no harm in waiting for another experienced user to review the deletion and judge what the right course of action is. As you are involved, and therefore potentially biased, you should refrain from doing this yourself. Thank you, - SDPatrolBot (talk) 15:49, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Mama Maggie Gobran has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. reddogsix (talk) 08:05, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Evaluation of 2014 FIFA World Cup Group strength requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Hi there! You keep adding the following paragraph to the lead of the article:

It should however be noted that all in all the Norwegian party was better suited and prepared for the quest, and that the British party managed to reach the South Pole was a bit of shear luck and that they eventually all died on their return to base camp was a consequence of improper planing and preparations.

This is a synthesis of original research, 'quest' doesn't need a link, 'South Pole' is already linked earlier, there are typos (shear vs. sheer, planing vs. planning), and the grammar needs some work. Can I ask why you keep adding it back in? NekoKatsun (talk) 18:34, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Let go of the typos, the facts are real. --Eivindgh (talk) 18:36, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is still desperately in need of a source, though. That's my main concern. Typos are easy to fix, but when they're part of a paragraph that needs verification, they - and the paragraph - should just be removed. For what it's worth, I agree with you that the Norwegians were better prepared, but we can't just put that in as a fact without citing a source. NekoKatsun (talk) 18:41, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, you've added it back in, with a nonexistent source. In the interest of avoiding an edit war, I have submitted a request for a third opinion. NekoKatsun (talk) 19:01, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can give you the very source, which is a physical (real indeed) book. Amazon

Third Opinion

[edit]

In my opinion, the statement that it was sheer luck that the British party reached the Pole at all, in Wikipedia's voice, is clearly original research. Even with a proper source, such a statement should be directly quoted. Please make a request on the article talk page to delete that sentence. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:18, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The article History of electoral college by US states has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unwieldy and essentially non-functional experiment at indexing. Consists of nothing but a list of states on one axis and a list of presidential elections on the other, with nothing really to do with the history of the electoral college whatsoever.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. A tag has been placed on John Orrell (English landowner) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The Barnstar of Original Research

[edit]

I haven't come up with a logo just yet, but you deserve a barnstar for this little bit of original research: [3] You started a section on the longest distances along lines of latitude and longitude. Fortunately, no one noticed this card-carrying WP:OR, and User:Jidanni eventually posted a request in the article for a more general form along any great circle here. That led eventually to User:Muh1974's one and only edit [4] providing the third and best solution for the problem. Which spawned a Reddit thread about it here, and finally, appearing in _Science_ as a news item, with confirmation that the route was correct, here. With a tantalizing suggestion for me (well, someone) to go back and credit the people responsible. Wnt (talk) 03:45, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/wmss/online/blcas/convention-assoc.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. A tag has been placed on 1871 America's Cup requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.americascup.com/en/history. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
