DYK for Symphyotrichum lateriflorum

[edit]

On 18 July 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the blossoms of Symphyotrichum lateriflorum (examples pictured) have been used by the Meskwaki as a smudge "to cure a crazy person who has lost his mind"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Symphyotrichum lateriflorum. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Symphyotrichum lateriflorum), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

On stubs

[edit]
Extended content

Hi Eewilson,

I have been creating drafts for List of Dracophyllum species as well as a template and realising there are so many red links, do you think I should spam stubs, to improve later? Thanks, Dracophyllum 11:27, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I did for the Symphyotrichum species. I created a text file with the beginning text and citations, then pasted it in each one and changed them according to the species. Most have basic data that came from three sources. You would likely find the same with Dracophyllum, depending on the species' native location, like POWO for valid name/authorities/synonyms, IUCN for conservation data, and a flora for basic description. Remember to attach the created file to the Wikidata record, but if you aren't comfortable with that, a bot will probably come around within a few days and do it. And put the Stub template tag at the bottom as well as create the talk page with the Plants Project template {{WikiProject Plants|class=stub|importance=low|needs-image=yes}}. If you have an image, you can leave off the needs-image qualifier. Each one probably took less than 15–20 minutes once I got into it, and now I almost forget that a month ago, there were many red-links for that genus. So if you feel so inspired, figure out what should be in a Dracophyllum stub, and WP:BEBOLD! —Eewilson (talk) 11:54, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't Navboxes neat? I created Template:Symphyotrichum a couple of weeks ago. Also, remember, red-links aren't BAD, they are just a reminder that Wikipedia is never finished. —Eewilson (talk) 12:02, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Your Dracophyllum Navbox template can use D. instead of the full genus name for each species in the list. Makes it more compact. Nice work! —Eewilson (talk) 12:05, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If you want, I can create you a userbox, like this but for your favorite genus: :) —Eewilson (talk) 12:08, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I'd love one :) Dracophyllum 21:07, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Created AND added to your Userpage — just because. :) Feel free to edit the template if you wish to change the image or color. You can also snatch it and put it in your own namespace if you want, but you don't have to. —Eewilson (talk) 00:17, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's perfect, thank you!!! Dracophyllum 01:24, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Premium Reviewer Barnstar
Hi, Eewilson, Thank you very much for your thorough review, editing, advice, and hard work on the Jane Ingham article. I consider you joint author of the article as you improved it so much during your review. It has been a joy to work with you, and above all, your knowledge and experience has been a complete education for me. I learnt more in a week working with you than in my entire time here on Wikipedia. I am also looking forward to working with again in the future, thank you very much. Some thoughts

I remember in the GA review I requested you remove the long captions on the root images, but now I wonder whether you really need four separate images just of the root structure... Also I would recommend testing out some more multiple image blocks – particularly in the description and ecology sections. Dracophyllum 09:15, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dracophyllum do you mean in the Symphyotrichum lateriflorum article? I just submitted S. Novae-angliae for GA. S. Lateriflorum is just waiting on someone to press GO for FA. Maybe it only needs one caudex photo, you’re thinking? Eewilson (talk) 10:14, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah Dracophyllum 10:20, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea! I should probably wait to change it until after it gets to FA so it doesn't slow that down. Eewilson (talk) 10:54, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think my changes to your image placements on your GAN are good? Dracophyllum 10:56, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Feel like doing another of your super thorough GA reviews? :) Eewilson (talk) 11:03, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alt text The Good JAlt textb! Award
Congratulations on your featured article submission! It's especially nice to see your passion for flowers; we seem to have too many featured articles about video games, music, and military wars recently... Panini!🥪 18:32, 12 November 2021 (UTC) [reply]

I noticed that you seemed to be a little confused about the featured article process, so let me sit down and clarify some things for you: proper featured article candidates require a source review, and image reviews, and three prose reviews in order to be passed. "Three prose reviews" is unofficial and super flexible, so it really depends on the article's quality (for example, this old one of mine had like 10). Spot checks are good but are optional for passing. It depends on whether or not someone comes in and does it, and due to a lack of participation, it's unlikely for this to happen. If you want to contact the coordinators, one subheader will suffice and any future comments you have you can put under it. It helps save space so this page, which transcludes all the reviews, doesn't get so massive. I'd also ping the coordinators a little less; there's only four of them that handle the front page, so although it's simply you being passionate it can appear to be nagging to the coordinators. Hope this helps for next time! Panini!🥪 18:32, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Panini! Hey, thanks! Can you give me one of these for how to get your DYK scheduled, too! :) Eewilson (talk) 18:39, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eewilson, DYK is far simpler in comparison to GA and FAC; nominate your article, and eventually, a reviewer will come in and check it out. Since the requirements for DYK is 5x expansion or GA promotion, the chances of the reviewer pointing out something about the article directly is unlikely (not impossible, but unlikely). They have a checklist of things they need to check off that most likely were already cleaned up during a rewrite/expansion, so it's nothing to worry about. There's also not only an abundance of common DYK patrollers, but users who have over five DYKs are required to review another one (quid pro quo), so it should be picked up in about under a week. When a reviewer leaves a comment, it's always something small; when you see a green checkmark, you're in the clear! It notifies the coordinators and they do all the queue organization for you. Since DYKs are barely disputed and easy to manage compared to the very stingy FAC, so it functions well on its own without much need for coordinator intervention. Panini!🥪 02:04, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Panini! Thanks! Once a DYK nomination passes review, eventually it gets scheduled to appear on the main page. Is there anything required on my end for that to happen? I don't think so, if I remember correctly from the DYK I did for the GA article earlier in the year, but I want to make sure because I'm finding some parts of the steps either missing or missing from my reading. The part about the number of reviewers for FA, how to do a TFA schedule request, and what to do after a DYK nomination has passed (I have two of those right now), are answers I either haven't found on the instructions pages or that I completely glossed over when reading. I appreciate your taking the time to instruct me. Eewilson (talk) 03:04, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one more thing (hopefully) about the TFA request. Should I ask people to take a look at it for support, or just wait? Is it a QPQ thing where I take a look at others' TFA requests? Eewilson (talk) 03:08, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see what must have happened for me with the instructions for TFA nomination. After doing step 3, which I believe took me to a different page, I didn't go back to step 4, on the original page, likely having forgotten it was there. This explains why I didn't place it either for a specific date or unspecified. <eyeroll> Eewilson (talk) 03:22, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eewilson, must've missed this one.
  1. When a DYK passes a review (when you see a green checkmark by the reviewer comment), you've done all you can. The DYK coordinators will take your hook and organize it into preps and even archive the page for you. Isn't that nice?
Incredibly nice! Eewilson (talk) 22:33, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Pinging some people for attention will definitely garner supports but advertisement isn't necessary. The TFA request page gets about 15-20ish requests monthly for the coordinators to pick on, so most people keep an eye on that page to see the progress. Most likely users with a TFA request (and the coordinators themselves sometimes) will go, "Ah, what the heck. They've come this far", and support other TFAs while they're at the page, because why not?
Cool. Thanks. Eewilson (talk) 22:33, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  1. No, QPQ isn't necessary for the TFA process. You can bet, however, that if you support other TFAs they'll come and support yours back. Panini!🥪 13:14, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one more thing... you're probably wondering, "What's next?" Well, either you can move on to another project, or there is one more, massive-scale hurdle you can leap if you're up for it: Wikipedia:Good topics, Wikipedia:Featured topics. See this example. Panini!🥪 13:23, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I have a new modem/router and am back online, I can take a look. thank you! Eewilson (talk) 22:33, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Panini! A belated THANK YOU for all the great information! Right now, I have another GA in the queue and my first FLC. And a DYK. Getting into the swing of it! Eewilson (talk) 04:41, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. There are a bunch of reviewers (or have been; things have been slowing down lately) who will jump in to make sure that articles get one support so they don't fail prematurely. I'll wait for one of those folks to review, then I'll jump in. - Dank (push to talk) 04:33, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Eewilson (talk) 04:36, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the offer of help on my plant list ... I've run into some problems, and I'm going to withdraw it from FLC and continue work on the list in my userspace. I'll keep it linked from my main user page. Your input is welcome any time. - Dank (push to talk) 15:44, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dank, no problem. Keep doing your good work. :) Eewilson (talk) 17:43, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, it was puzzling that I didn't pick up a 3rd support on my previous plant list for months (until your support), and it seems odd to me that your nomination doesn't have any supports yet. There's been some evidence this year that FLC is slowing down, but it doesn't appear to be broken, and processes like FLC tend to be sturdy over the long run (with occasional hiccups). Science-y lists at FLC (as well as articles at FAC) sometimes have a harder time ... because science puts constraints on what we can do, above and beyond the constraints that other nominators are dealing with. Patience might work ... or not, I'm not sure. If it goes on much longer, then we should probably start talking with some of the regular reviewers and see if there's something we need to be doing. - Dank (push to talk) 15:30, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dank, Thank you. I need to be patient. Just because we have worked on something for months and months and months does not mean it is important to anyone else. The frustration of being a Wikipedia editor. Eewilson (talk) 02:52, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ain't that the truth. - Dank (push to talk) 02:54, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On 19 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Symphyotrichum potosinum, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Amazing work as always on your updated list, I'm very busy at the moment but taking some time to write something new has been calming. I see you are also writing about a favourite botanist of yours. I'm writing about Harry Allan, one of the greatest New Zealand botanists... Happy editing! Dracophyllum 08:58, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Dracophyllum! Yes, I am working on John C. Semple, my favorite. Right now, I'm just formatting his publications, including finding links to them. I know the long list won't be in the article, but it will be nice to have them for future reference. And it is work that doesn't require too much thinking. It is difficult to find published personal information for living people, so most of the article will be a focus on his work, and there is much of it. I look forward to reading your writing, as always. :) Eewilson (talk) 09:36, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dracophyllum, I hope everything is okay. Take care of yourself. It's a holiday week here in the US (Thanksgiving is tomorrow). Traditionally, it means people cook large turkeys and other food for hours on end to then stuff themselves and then nap from the Tryptophan in the turkey (I'm vegetarian, so I save the bird), and interact with family whom they don't like and typically only see when they have to. Mine is not like that. It will be relaxing. :) Eewilson (talk) 17:55, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is to let you know that the Symphyotrichum lateriflorum article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 5, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 5, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:42, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, about "the vascular plant species Symphyotrichum lateriflorum in the family Asteraceae. Symphyotrichum is a genus of about 96 asters native to the Americas. Most in the Northern Hemisphere bloom August–October, some as late as November. There are very few GA articles from this family, and this is the first for this genus. It has received only positive responses on its content and photographs during 2021, and I think it would be a great addition to the FA list and, if possible, one to appear during this Fall season (although obviously only if possible)."! - Nice to meet you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

Sorry for ghosting on you after promising to do a GA review--the semester ramped up just after that and with one thing and another, I've been taking a pretty extended break from editing. I'm going back on break now, so this is a relatively good time for me if you'd like me to look at any Symphotrichum articles.

Remind me next fall, and I can get you a picture of S. pilosum var. pringlei if you need one. We have it growing near S. depauperatum at some of our serpentine barrens here, and there is a marked difference in appearance...some of us have been questioning whether the latter species is in fact present at Soldiers Delight. Choess (talk) 17:26, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Choess, thank you! I will take you up on those photos and will remind you. I was just thinking about how the sorry little S. pilosum article needs improvement, that it should be a near-future project, and that adding good pics of var. pringlei would be a part of that, if I could find them. You must have been reading my mind!
Regarding a Symphyotrichum article, there are two possibilities here. Of lesser importance right now is Symphyotrichum novae-angliae. It is in the queue to be reviewed for GA.
The other is an entirely revamped List of Symphyotrichum species, which is awaiting on a review as a FLC. It has had a review for accessibility but nothing else. If you have time and the desire, looking at it is more of a priority because eventually, they get archived if there has been no review interest. :/ Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Symphyotrichum species/archive1. I would oh so appreciate it, and thank you for the apology!
Symphyotrichum lateriflorum passed GA, passed and was promoted to FA, and will be TFA on January 5th! :) Eewilson (talk) 18:14, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Symphyotrichum novae-angliae you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. The article Symphyotrichum novae-angliae you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Symphyotrichum novae-angliae for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK.
