Arbitration

  • By motion, standard discretionary sanctions have been temporarily authorized for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes). The effectiveness of the discretionary sanctions can be evaluated on the request by any editor after March 1, 2021 (or sooner if for a good reason).
  • Following the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Barkeep49, BDD, Bradv, CaptainEek, L235, Maxim, Primefac.

This was the content prior to the db tag, which also blanked the page.

This is your RedWarn configuration file. It is recommended that you don't edit this yourself and use RedWarn preferences instead.
It is writen in JSON formatting and is excecuted every time RedWarn loads.

If somebody has asked you to add code to this page, DO NOT do so as it may comprimise your account and will be reverted as soon as any configuration value changes.

Redwarn permissions source

[edit]

Hello. Yeah, I kind of played around with the software, and I tried to see if I could install the tool without perms, because I have used it in the past, but I don't have autoconfirm perms yet. I have removed it now, and I promise that I would not touch the source again. Sorry. ThatIPEditor (talk) 22:58, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want, I could also send you what I changed in the code. ThatIPEditor (talk) 22:58, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh one last thing, yeah, the detection system worked properly, so if you can close the discussion for undeletion that would be amazing. ThatIPEditor (talk) 22:59, 13 January 2021 (UTC) Nevermind, it's already undeleted. Again, sorry about that. ThatIPEditor (talk) 23:01, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Talking about improvements, you could just bypass it by only removing the checks at init, and the places where it asks for it, so, instead of running a check, it immediately sets the var we are trying to change to what would have happened if the check is passed. Also, the tamperProtection.js isn't obfuscated. But, I'm not gonna bypass permission checking for redwarn again. I recommend the software to check hashes to do the tamper protection (both ways), in addition to actually obfuscating the code. Im terribly sorry. ThatIPEditor (talk) 23:08, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ThatIPEditor, no worries, thanks for explaining the situation. We weren't planning to take action against you as RedWarn is open source and you haven't abused it. The code is mainly used to monitor potential socks or abuse by new accounts but we just wanted to make sure the bot had worked correctly and hadn't misfired as I couldn't see in time (hence the undeletion request). If there's a bug, some users might freak out which we don't want. Re the code, it is obfuscated inside of RedWarn and not actually included in the build (see build.php), but I can't tell you the location of it for obvious reasons. There's an improved algorithm that actually takes account for those suggestions but I haven't pushed it yet as I've been a bit busy with work. Feel free to use RedWarn once you're autoconfirmed and ping me if you ever need help with RedWarn, or anything else here! And if you want to make improvements feel free to make a pull request on GitLab. Thanks ✨ Ed talk!00:05, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out, I was just like, 2 hours away from autoconfirmed, and I got it now. Thank you so much! ThatIPEditor (talk) 00:26, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I just came back for something, because I messed up really badly because of the incident, I would like to know if it would be OK if I just change the templating a bit, because I want to use my own warnings, and it is kind of difficult having to go to the "warn user" to see what warnings are already on their userpage, and then apply my own template through the "quick template" feature. Would you be OK with this? ThatIPEditor (talk) 00:53, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ThatIPEditor, RedWarn is open source, absolutely feel free! Working on a feature like that for the next version of RW but you should be able to just edit rules.js and add your new rules there (make sure you use the same format and group categories together) ✨ Ed talk!01:00, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great! Also, one last thing, is there any way I can host the scripts so I do not have to keep it running on my computer? ThatIPEditor (talk) 01:02, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ThatIPEditor, yes, run php build.php > redwarn.js then you can either host that code on a web server or copy and paste it into a userscript. ✨ Ed talk!14:14, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Autowarn in RedWarn

[edit]

I think if the rollback automatically warned and/or reported the user it would be a lot more useful and quick. Also maybe there could be an "Rc patrol" mode that automatically advanced RedWarn to the next edit. Aasim (talk) 00:20, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RE Rc patrol, we're working on it - and rollback automation will probably be coming soon too. Thanks for your feedback :) ✨ Ed talk!03:16, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also Ed, is it okay if I move your talk page note to the proper "editnotice" part of your userspace? Aasim (talk) 00:22, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome Aasim, feel free. ✨ Ed talk!03:16, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your explanation at the Teahouse of how the Wayback Machine could be used to estimate when a web page first appeared, and thus evaluate the risk that a very similar Wikipedia article could have been duplicated from that page.

Back in the business of making scripts again

[edit]

This time, a tool that allows for faster creation of redirects. User:Awesome Aasim/redirectcreator The only thing I am concerned about is the possibility that someone might decide to make a ton of pointless redirects in which case I would then have to restrict the tool. Aasim (talk) 02:38, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome Aasim, cool! Added :) ✨ Ed talk!02:42, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am also thinking about making a better category manager than hotcat. Aasim (talk) 06:53, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If it sounds interesting to you, the code will be at User:Awesome Aasim/CatMan.js. Nya nya! Aasim (talk) 09:59, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome Aasim, nice idea! You should definitely make a proper GitHub repository for your projects in future, along with using an IDE such as VSCode in future (if you don't already). It makes life SO much easier. Let me know if you'd like help setting it up. ✨ Ed talk!19:13, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767 - CatMan is finally here. Check it out at CatMan. It's a cat, but it's also a man. Sorry terrible pun. I hope to add a "category search" function like HotCat has and internationalization, but at least at the moment it is better than nothing! Aasim (talk) 01:02, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sisuvia, thanks for reporting this bug. Do you mind if I ask did it occur and on which page? Thanks, ✨ Ed talk!17:05, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ed6767 Hey! I'm sorry, but I think I was just a bit confused because this is my first time using RedWarn. I was trying to do a quick rollback while I was on the old revision of a page (which I was trying to rollback to). Sisuvia (talk) 17:09, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sisuvia, no worries! If you encounter the issue again you may want to try resetting your RedWarn configuration. You can do this by clicking the More Options button > RedWarn preferences > then scroll down to the very bottom and click "RESET REDWARN" ✨ Ed talk!17:12, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

[edit]

I just wanted to express my appreciation for RedWarn. I encountered something on-wiki that made me want to file a report to T&S. In my almost 17 years here I've never had need to do something like that, and I had no idea where to start. It was nice to be able to do it in a couple clicks instead of having to comb through help pages. Thanks!

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

[edit]

Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias
When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

  • Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
  • The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
