Wikipedia and copyright

Hello Earth2Laura1! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

• You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
• Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
• We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
• If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
• Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. I've had to re-list Simon Bull at WP:CP as the new version also has significant amounts of text copied from web sources. As mentioned above, Wikipedia cannot accept text copied from elsewhere. Simon Bull

HI, I just thought I'd offer you some feedback on your Draft:Simon_Bull article. I hope the list below helps you understand what needs to be done to the article.

• You simply cannot copy text from other places that may be copyright. You need to write everything afresh.
• Focus on cites that are specifically about Bull, and from reliable sources. Passing mentions and lists don't really establish Bull's notability.
• There are a lot of cites that are to scanned PDF uploads on his own website. These aren't acceptable because they are WP:PRIMARY, even the ones that are scans of newspapers. Cite the newspaper directly.
• There are still some instances where the article is voicing an opinion. Neutrality is everything. For instance your lead describes his techniques as "innovative". That sounds like an opinion. This would be ok if attributed to authoritative third party, but you've cited two of his own videos.
• The short description at the very top of the article describes him as "internationally famous". This is what we call peacocking.
• You have a lot of links in the article body that go to external websites. These should be removed. Links in the article should only go to other Wikipedia articles. External links should only appear in the info box (where listing his website), in a "External Links" section at the foot of the article, or in the cited references.
• The External Links section currently is what we call a a link farm. Wikipedia is not a directory of the internet and it should be limited to a handful of sites that directly reference the article subject.
• Lastly, and this is more of a judgement call, as an English artist I'd expect the article to use UK English. So things like "colourful" would be spelt that way. Obviously him now being a US citizen makes things slightly different, but you might want to consider that.

Speedy deletion of Draft:Simon Bull

The page Draft:Simon Bull has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appeared to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appeared to be a direct copy from https://bullart.com/bio/, http://www.digithall.com/wordpress/simon-bull/, and unattributed copy of Simon Bull. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition has been be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
