The CIA is not the last word

[edit]

As you can see in Economy of Brazil and Economy of Panama, those two countries are richer right now, the CIA Work is derogatory and most people who use it are often ignorants! No offense but, I prefer to search for LOCAL DATA which provides full accuracy, several articles have data that has not been updated since 1997. Stick to the accurate and true data, I think the CIA World Factbook prioritizes some countries.

Cocoliras (talk) 01:38, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About sources, these can be found in the UN Food Program inform, this is since poverty is based on food in the infoboxes, just like Mexico. To confirm it, Panama's fat population is 50% (similar to the USA) while its slim pop. is of about 25% the rest is undernourished. Eventually, if we can find a homelessness rate, we can confirm an exact number. For the moment, just place in the thumbbox that it is a CIA map and not another map and place that other maps exist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cocoliras (talkcontribs) 23:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Economic inequality map update

[edit]

There was a request to have your excellent economic equality map recolored so as to avoid apparent bias by making increasing inequality bad (red) and decreasing inequality good (green). I took the liberty of recoloring your map but have been unable to upload it to Wikipedia, plus I feel a little uneasy saying the content is entirely my own work (in the licensing section of the uploads) since it clearly isn't (I give you rights to claim my recoloring as your own work without citation). When you get a chance, could you upload the color-changed version or suggest what you would like me to do differently? (different color palette?) I do think we'd like to convey the information of inequality without making a judgment of whether it's necessarily bad. Let me know your thoughts and thanks for making the great picture! Bjp716 (talk) 20:00, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly if one family has *all* the wealth, that would be a bad state of affairs; no one else would have anything! But, I do think it's easily defensible that economic inequality is not necessarily a bad thing. Egypt has a significantly lower Gini coefficient than the US, but I think it would be hard to argue that a population with one tenth American GDP is better off. If half of Egypt's population suddenly found a way to make $44k per capita without working harder, the inequality in Egypt would go way up and no one would become poorer. From an inequality standpoint, this sudden creation of wealth would be a bad thing. You may protest and say that, given a total GDP, it is best to distribute it as equally as possible. This is perhaps the case, but it is an unattainable goal. Wealth is primarily created by hard work and innovation. In a country where everyone was guaranteed the same income regardless of how hard they worked, there would be little motivation to work, so little wealth would be created. You may wish that America could maintain its GDP but distribute it more equally among its citizens, but that is not a possible choice; the choice is between a higher GDP where "all boats are lifted" but lifted unevenly, or a (much) lower GDP where everyone has about the same amount of wealth. The protest to this argument is usually that people will work just as hard under in a communistic (complete redistribution) situation because they will be satisfied that their efforts benefit others. This, however, has been proven false time and again throughout history for any group of people large enough where members do not know or interact with most other members. That being said, I think your map is excellent; I like my coloring less than your original coloring (mine looks like a collection of neon Easter eggs!) but I do agree with the person who wanted the color connotation to be more neutral. Thanks for making the map and for uploading the new version! I, and I'm sure many other Wikipedians, greatly appreciate your contributions. If there's anything I can do to help you on Wikipedia, please let me know :) Bjp716 (talk) 07:18, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good work

[edit]

Very good work on Polity map! I will add it some articles if you do not mind like the Polity data series articles. However, the US is not colored. Any reason for this? Otherwise, I am thinking about uploading a map including this. Also, I appreciate your work on the other maps. Ultramarine (talk) 20:03, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, go ahead and use it for whatever you want. I didn't colour America because it appears that there was no data for them on their page. http://www.cidcm.umd.edu/polity/country_reports/report.htm

You can register for free and get all the historical data and the 2004 data (including the US) here: [1]. I see that you continue to make quality maps. Have you seen the very interesting ratings on Global Competitiveness Index, Ease of Doing Business Index, and Indices of Economic Freedom? I made some of the maps some time ago but they are now outdated.Ultramarine (talk) 18:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Figures

minor/major edits

[edit]

It seems that you check the minor checkbox too often. WP policy states: "A check to the minor edit box signifies that only superficial differences exist between the current and previous version: typo corrections, formatting and presentational changes, rearranging of text without modifying content, et cetera." For example, this [2] excellent edit is not minor. --Doopdoop (talk) 22:12, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed I do seem to have a habit of automatically hitting the 'minor' box since the vast majority of my edits are grammar and vandalism reverts, but thanks for the heads up, I'll try to work on that. Sbw01f (talk) 22:23, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A little help.

[edit]

Dear Sbw01f!

I think you could help me. I want to find 10 colour codes of these 4 images in List of religious populations. And could I use Paint program to colouring map?

Please help me as soon as possible. Thank you so much and best wishes to you!

Angelo De La Paz (talk) 21:53, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean, you want to find 10 colour codes for those maps? Do you mean the 10 colours those maps use? But yes, you can use paint. That's all I use. Sbw01f (talk) 22:22, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes! Sorry because my English skill was not enough good. I mean the 10 colours those maps use (0-9%, 10-19%,...90-100%). How can I find it? Please!

Angelo De La Paz (talk) 23:01, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, well to be honest I'm not sure. You could just open those maps in paint and use the "pick colour" tool..but I'm not sure how to find out the exact colour code. Sorry! Sbw01f (talk) 00:31, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! That's OK. Thanks!

Poverty map

[edit]

Hi. Can you please make this map (and every other map for that matter) use a blue (better/higher) to red (worst/lower) instead of green/red which is very hard to differentiate for some people, including myself? I would be eternally grateful. Thanks. ☆ CieloEstrellado 10:50, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I could do it for the poverty maps. The education map however is supposed to be in accordance with the HDI map. Sbw01f (talk) 18:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(About the image) That is a much better reason for deletion, but I doubt it qualifies as a speedy deletion. You should list the image at WP:IFD giving the same information (mostly just about how it is un-sourced information, and ignoring that it's based upon your work). Thanks! Now I SEE the difference! ☆ CieloEstrellado 03:25, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check out the Central and Eastern Europe section of the IMF's Developing Countries List

[edit]

IMF Developing countries list: Central and Eastern Europe 151.57.202.235 (talk) 23:18, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - you're invited to join in a discussion on the inclusion of the EU in the List of countries by GDP (nominal) article. Regards SilkTork *YES! 23:13, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Mediation discussion regarding the inclusion of the EU in List of countries by GDP (nominal) has come to a conclusion with the following result:

  • The EU to remain in List of countries by GDP (nominal).
  • The EU to be positioned according to GDP rank between World and USA.
  • No consensus on the EU appearing in all three charts. By convention this means the situation would remain as current - that is the EU remains on all three charts.
  • Data for the EU on each chart to only be given if sourced, otherwise a dash to replace the data.
  • Explanation to be placed in the lead section for the appearance of the EU and other non-countries. Possible wording: "Several economies which are not normally considered to be countries are included in the list because they appear in the sources. These economies are not ranked in the charts here, but are listed in sequence by GDP for comparison."
  • The List retains the current name.
  • A suggestion by Tomeasy that I feel should be carried out is that the sister articles are given the same treatment as agreed above.

Unless there are significant disagreements within the next 48 hours I will be closing the Mediation. Any questions, please get in touch. Regards SilkTork *YES! 10:43, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVG

[edit]

I saw some tags on some of your maps requesting that they be converted to SVG format. Just a recommendation, you might want to consider uploading maps in SVG format in the future. That said, the maps you've created are excellent. Keep up the good work! -- Javawizard (talk) 05:48, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the above statement. SVG is the preferred format for maps on Wikipedia. See Commons:Media for cleanup for more information and the advantages to using SVG. Keep up the great contributions! Thatoneguy89 (talk) 21:34, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I messed around with SVG a while back and I couldn't figure out how to convert PNG to SVG without deforming the image, so I gave up on that. If you want to convert some of my maps to SVG though that'd be appreciated. Sbw01f (talk) 21:51, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I recommend that you take a look at Inkscape for future use in map making. It's a vector graphics program that, in my opinion, is just as easy to use as MS Paint for basic graphics creation. Once you find a blank vector map of the world (almost certainly available in the commons) you can use Inkscape to fill in the countries with color using the same paint can tool you would find in MS Paint. And yes converting some of your current maps is something I'd be glad to work on. Thatoneguy89 (talk) 22:14, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

new changes to GINI index

[edit]

Hi, I am a new user to wikipedia and I am not an established user

I updated your old GINI index png with corrected GINI for Taiwan and you forgot to paint eastern malaysia along with western malaysia

I made a new wiki common file, but can you merge that with your original - the wiki common file is at

Image:Gini_Coefficient_World_Human_Development_Report_2007-2008-new.png —Preceding unsigned comment added by Okisdwed (talkcontribs) 14:56, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thanks for correcting those mistakes. In the future, all you need to do is go to the image page on commons, log in and click the "Upload a new version of this file" button and over-rite the old file so that it doesn't create a separate duplicate image. Sbw01f (talk) 02:32, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, your maps are beautiful, great additions to the articles they're in. I noticed Image:SuicideRates.PNG doesn't have a source or sources cited for where you got the info, can you provide it on the image page? Major depression is going to FAC soon and will probably get trouble for the lack of citation. I'd recommend citing the sources you use for each map if possible, but this is the one I'm interested in! Thanks much! Peace, delldot ∇. 13:07, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, the source is WHO, I've added it to the map description. Sbw01f (talk) 23:32, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks a bunch! delldot ∇. 00:54, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I left a note on your commons page as well - I like this map and it is linked in major depressive disorder, currently a featured article candidate. I was wondering whether the colours could be rearranged into some sort of spectrum - red is ususally severe, so would shades of red through pink or orange be better? The colour relationship to severity isn't obvious when you look at it. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:25, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you just mean the colours should be according to some sort of palette regardless of what the actual colours are? I can certainly fix that if that's the case. Though as far as "severe" colours go, I make it a point to try and avoid POV in certain maps by using "good" colours and "bad" colours. With things like Poverty and Literacy rates, it's not really an issue because obviously poverty and illiteracy are generally accepted to be undesirable, but suicide is a little different. There could be arguments that it's not my place to judge whether someones personal choice of what they do with their own life is good or bad, right or wrong.
What do you think of this or this? Sbw01f (talk) 00:06, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Units in GDP per Capita maps

[edit]

I like your GDP per Capita map 2008, and the one for 2007, but I have one comment - what are the units? The maps state ranges (0-500, 500-1000 etc. up to 30000+), but is this SDR per month, Euro cents per week or what? TiffaF (talk) 08:02, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response. I think the units should be on the diagram, and not just "US Dollars", but "US Dollars per month" or whatever it actually is. TiffaF (talk) 09:22, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not per month, it's per capita. It basically divides the economy up and gives a small slice to every single citizen. It's actually kind of self-explanatory if you read the GDP per capita article. Sbw01f (talk) 15:45, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, its obviously per Capita. But, in the GDP per capita article it says: "GDP .... is equal to the total expenditures .... in a stipulated period of time". You need to stipulate the period of time. There is a big difference between being paid 5 Groats per day, 5 Groats per month and 5 Groats per year. :-) TiffaF (talk) 13:33, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The stipulated period of time is the year 2008. The article itself says "usually a 365-day year". Moreover, the map note says "Countries by 2008 GDP (nominal) per capita". GDP per capita isn't normally measured by anything other than yearly output, but if it was it would surely be specified as such. Sbw01f (talk) 00:55, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unemployment update

I have now updated the article and decided to make a new map for the article. I hope you like it. Jolly Ω Janner 23:33, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map making

[edit]

I just looked through your map(s) and noticed that the islands e.g. mainland US and Alaska are connected with a line. You can prevent this if you make the maps in Inkscape with an svg map and then you can export it as a png when you're finished and upload both of them! :) Jolly Ω Janner 18:34, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I once tried to do a map in SVG and upload it, and I failed miserably. Know of any good tutorial sites? Sbw01f (talk) 18:36, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No. It's quite easy. Just click on the country you want to fill in with the arrow and then click a colour at the bottom of the page. Try using this one as a template. You'll probably want to select evverything and flood-fill it grey and then delete the key in the bottom left. Jolly Ω Janner 18:42, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. Sbw01f (talk) 18:48, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gini Coefficient World Map

[edit]

You can't use World Bank's Gini(also UN) data. Because the underlying household surveys differ in method and in the type of data collected, the distribution data are not strictly comparable across countries. see http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_countries_by_income_equality#cite_note-2 --Tnaniua (talk) 06:44, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't? Well I did ;) The purpose of the map is to represent a set of statistics according to the UN, and that's what it does. If you want to make another map using a different source, go ahead and list it alongside the UN map. Sbw01f (talk) 01:43, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Internet users map

[edit]

Greetings! I stumbled upon this file: File:Internet users by country world map.PNG, a version of which you uploaded. I noticed that one of the countries in West Africa (I couldn't figure out which one) seems to be shaded gray. I assumed that this meant that no data was available, but the scale does not include a gray region. What do you think? --Cryptic C62 · Talk 19:26, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's Western Sahara, and yes it means there is no data available. That's what grey normally means on these maps. Sbw01f (talk) 23:53, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I figured. I brought it to your attention because I think the scale should have a gray region to avoid further confusion for our viewers. --Cryptic C62 · Talk 00:05, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One question on map-making

[edit]

Dear Mr/Mrs Sbw01, what software do you use for making this maps? Or you make it manually in Gimp or something like? Sincerely yours, Alexey Egorov. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.40.205.67 (talk) 06:06, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just asked the same, without seeing it already had been, twice (also above in '== Great maps =='), nor that it was already answered, twice: he says above (in '== A little help. ==' & '== Great maps ==') he merely uses (microsoft) paint. However, I would add, that I notice other maps with the same template (which is to say "exactly" the same--edges of continents frayed precisely, the same positioned jigsaw pieces on each, the same key or types of key--obviously it would be a map of the world) and so I ask the question, is there any particular reason for this (I have some hopes that there exists a website that someone else knows about)? Moreover, is there a specific purpose in making the images oneself for wikipedia? Since, f.e., Gallup.com already has a religiosity map direct on the first page of their site (& I don't see a license). Ignotum per Ignotius (talk) 04:52, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
