You supported the photograph of chlorine in a quartz ampoule and acrylic cube. The nominator has indicated no replacement photograph will be available in the near future, and has instead cropped the original file and uploaded over the top, leaving us with two alternative crops. Could you please indicate which of these you prefer? Thanks. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 16:28, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Want to start a Wikipedia Project?
[edit]I've searched to see if this was currently a project, but I couldn't find anything. Please let me know if this exists.
Basically, I want to start a Wikipedia Project on converting JPG diagrams to SVG. Too often I see JPG diagrams with horrible JPG artifacts which NEED to be converted to SVG.
I'm not too sure on how to create a project page, but I was wondering if you would like to help me.
Thanks!
AmericanXplorer13 (talk) 02:29, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- Have you seen this? It seems kind of relevant. Wikipedia:WikiProject_SVG Since that is an inactive project, we might just take over it and focus that project on converting JPG, non-animated GIF, and even PNG diagrams to SVG. Purpy Pupple (talk) 02:42, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- How should we go about doing that? We can't just take over the group, can we? AmericanXplorer13 (talk) 03:18, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, would you like to create a new group, "Project Vector" instead trying to take over the group? The best thing to do would probably just delete the group and start over. It has been inactive since Sept. 9, and that was just fixing a typo. AmericanXplorer13 (talk) 03:24, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- Please edit this page for the Project Vector. I just copied the formatting from the Copy-Editing project. Please make changes to the following page. When we are done, we will make it live.

Opinion?
[edit]Before posting this alternative, I thought I'd get your opinion. I substituted planar mirrors and beam splitters, as you suggested. It seemed to me that the the best way to convey the fact that the light is monochromatic was to use colored photons. What other suggestions can you offer? Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 04:29, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Looks better now... it's cleaner. It seems that the (d) quadrant of the image is shifted a bit left compared to the (c) one (actually, (a) and (b) aren't aligned either, by a few pixels). Maybe instead of two dotted lines for the optical path, a single dotted line would suffice. Also, why are the text "source", "mirror", "beam splitter" etc in a different font? I usually reserve fixed-width fonts for code. I think the beam splitters' shade of grey could be made a bit lighter to make it even clearer that they are not regular mirrors. Try adding little arrows to emphasize the direction of light propagation (although, that might make it look too messy). By the way, the SVG markup seems to be failing validation. I really appreciate that you're taking the time to work on nice diagrams for interferometers. My main fear regarding this FP nomination is that some reviewers might not sufficiently understand physics to appreciate this. dllu (t,c) 09:41, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- OK, here is a new version to check out. Unfortunately, I am not an expert in SVG, so I don't know what to do about the validation problem, except maybe post on the SVG help page and wait for somebody to answer. I know how to fix a few simple things like the flow elements bug, but that's about it. Arrows made (a) a bit too busy, and after experimenting around, I left the beam splitters' shading the same. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 11:57, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- It seems that some of the detectors are a lighter shade of grey than others. Specifically, detector A in (a), both A and B in (b), and C in (c) are a lighter shade of grey than all the other ones. In addition, I have found that the SVG includes use of the Calibri font, which is not allowed (see WP:SVG Help). When I have time I'll look at it in more detail. dllu (t,c) 16:38, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- I've converted my text objects to paths, so using Calibri shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise, of course, you never know for sure how the font is going to render. Inkscape is buggy about gradients. I'll change the gradient shading to solid shading tonight. I had tons of issues with the radial gradient shading on Tatoute's original illustration. I couldn't get the light bulbs to match. The detectors seem to be the same story. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 16:54, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Changing the gradients to solid shading is a good idea. I did notice a few spurious gradient tags in the svg source code. I think the main concern about font copyright is that under font copyright law, "scalable computer fonts [...] constitute a 'computer program' for the purposes of copyright law and hence are subject to protection. [...] A scalable font will generally be protected even though the specific design of the characters is not." But I am not an expert on font copyright law so it is best to ask someone else about that. dllu (t,c) 17:03, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't realize it was a copyright question. On SVG help, I always saw the font issue discussed as a rendering question. OK, I'll go for a safe font. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 17:17, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- New version here. Detectors use solid shading. After replacing the Calibri font, there were still bogus references to Calibri which I needed to remove with a text editor. I also corrected some flowroot stuff and attributes with trailing spaces. The current version passes Jarry1250's SVG Check tool with no warnings. I won't bother modifying the paths so that they refract properly. :-) I'll do that correction for the Mach-Zehnder illustration with the candle. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 03:43, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Looks good! You have my blessing :P dllu (t,c) 04:13, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for everything! By the way, I just finished getting it to pass the W3C Markup Validator tool as well. I removed all the attributes that the tool didn't like, and the image appears unaffected. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 04:50, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Regarding the markup, it's kinda messy because it seems to have been edited with both Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape, both of which like to spam annoying stuff in the markup. But that's okay as long as the file size is reasonably small and the image looks clean and nice (after all we are not going for Structured SVG). Good job getting it to pass W3C validation! Now let's see if it gets to Featured Picture status. dllu (t,c) 06:03, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

WP:COI issue, maybe? :-)
[edit]You wrote, "As a side note, maybe consider expanding your namesake article."
Done. See Stigmatella aurantiaca. I hope you find it interesting.
But does this count as WP:COI? Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 06:47, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- Very nice! I took a brief look through and it is quite good so far. I will read it in more detail later when I have time. It seems that the "Taxonomy" section is too short, maybe just throw those links into the infobox or something. Also, there doesn't seem to be a lead section... consider putting a summary of "Description and significance" in the lead. I don't think it counts as WP:COI, assuming that you are not actually one or more members of the species Stigmatella aurantiaca, or a paid advocate for them. In any case, consider removing the "significance" part of the section title "Description and significance". It is expected that all articles should be about significant things so it is probably not necessary for them to shout, "I am significant!!". dllu (t,c) 18:20, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Prim's algorithm video
[edit]Hello, I've noticed that the video included in the article Prim's algorithm does not really seem to depict what the caption claims (apply the algorithm to a randomly weighted grid graph). See [2] for more details, especially the second paragraph. The links in that page will help comparing and seeing the difference. Also, the actual algorithm devised by Jarník (the one on the link), which is useful for maze creation, is not included in the Maze generation algorithms article. --pgimeno (talk) 01:41, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing that out! I had made the same realization when viewing Mike Bostock's page that you linked. However, I haven't had time or motivation to remake the animation. Perhaps I should do it soon to avoid misleading others. dllu (t,c) 02:00, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. Actually, the second part of my previous note is erroneous, sorry. The maze generation algorithms page does have a note on the fact that Prim's and Kruskal's with random weights would produce identical mazes given identical sets of weights (provided all weights are different). My apologies. --pgimeno (talk) 05:37, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

I've uploaded it in svg too but as You can see it looks bad in preview size that I'm using in articles like Elf (Middle-earth) and Sundering of the Elves. I've asked about it in SVG_help and now I know (as Sameboat - 同舟 told me in SVG_help page) that this image will look good in svg only in full size so I must stay with png on this one so it look good in preview size in articles. Best regards, Agnaton (talk) 15:00, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
- Edit: @Dllu I've done my best and it's .svg now! I hope You'll like it :) Best regards, Agnaton (talk) 16:53, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

File:Strip photo of San Francisco Cable Car 10.jpg scheduled for POTD
[edit]Hi Dllu,
This is to let you know that the featured picture File:Strip photo of San Francisco Cable Car 10.jpg, which you uploaded or nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for August 4, 2020. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2020-08-04. Your input on any inaccuracies in the blurb would be useful. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:52, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
This image shows Car 10 of the San Francisco cable car system photographed using strip photography, a technique that captures a two-dimensional image as a sequence of single-dimensional images over time. This technique can be implemented in various ways; in film photography, a camera with a vertical slit aperture can either have fixed film and a moving slit, or a fixed slit and moving film. One of the characteristics of strip photography is that moving objects are distorted based on the relative speed of their motion and the image capture. Slower-moving objects occupy more time, and thus appear wider, while faster-moving objects are narrower, as they occupy the slit for a shorter period of time. Stationary objects, particularly in the background, are rendered as a constant stripe. Photograph credit: Dllu
