Louisville
Wow, you have been busy on the Louisville, Kentucky article! I'm quite impressed. This barnstar is to recognize all the improvements you have made. I'll be nominating the article to be featured.
By the way, what part of Louisville do you live in? – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 23:19, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, the article is now being voted on as a featured article. You can go here to vote if you like. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 18:09, July 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I wholeheartedly agree that your work in the Louisville article has been great... it's already putting other similar city articles to shame. I have felt for a long time like I was one of the stewards of this article, and thus, I feel very proud about how the article is developing. And your work has been essential to that end. I think it will be worthy of being a "featured article" by the fall, at the very latest, given the rate it is improving. — Stevie is the man! Talk | Work 08:22, July 27, 2005 (UTC)
Strip Clubs, Pot in Portland
The fact that Portland has more strip clubs and porno theaters per capita than any other city in the country is very notable, as it brings in millions of dollars per year via sex tourism. The nudity laws in Portland are far more lax than in most other cities. In many strip clubs, women dance completely naked -- which is something they are not allowed to do in most other places. The only pair of clothing they are regulated to wear is a pair of shoes!
You asked for a source. How about this article from Willamette Week: http://www.wweek.com/story.php?story=6093

! Yes, the link to the note was the compromise itself. It's harmless and it finally shut up Ashley Y. Marskell 15:56, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- First, please do not leave notes on my user page but on my talk instead. This is policy: if an addition does not detract (even if it doesn't necessarily improve) you should not revert it. There is nothing about the see note link that detracts. Ashley's suggestions introduced ambiguity and appeared to undermine the validity of the numbers themselves whereas the compromise doesn't. I appreciate you want to defend the integrity of the infoboxes but I don't see how this creates problems. The fact that it is partially re-populating is wonderful news but doesn't alter things; and in a city where 60-odd % are renters I'd bet a few bucks there will be a significant drop in the medium-term.
- And yes, it was a compromise--she liked it, I felt it was fine and Dystopos said it was alright as well. Marskell 16:19, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- Clap, clap incidentally for reverting yourself. Most people leave in a huff when they don't have consensus so it was big of you. Yes, it's better than "currently, mostly" and yes it's more or less temporary. "Medium-term temporary" I'd say. I believe the U.S. census bureau releases estimates June 30 every year. Some sort of note will probably be needed until then. Marskell 15:52, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

City infoboxes
I noticed that you were using a infobox format that includes a skyline image. Since this format seems to be gaining popularity, I was thinking of making a template for it and tweak the appearance to make it similar to template:Infobox City. Any thoughts on this? Pentawing 21:13, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
- There is a minor problem with the infobox you are using, notably the coordinates. The region that it is using is GR (in Europe) when it should be US. Since this infobox has been placed in various articles, can you correct the problem in articles where you placed the infobox? Thanks. Pentawing 19:55, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Lists
- "...lists are generally discouraged in wiki articles."
Cite your source. WikiDon 02:22, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
I am sure that those cities are articles that you have already worked on. WikiDon 20:12, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Your paragraph looks like a mess to decode. A list is EASIER to read, and has more functionality, than a jumbled paragraph. And if you would consult your English textbook it will tell you so. It will tell you that if you have more than three items a list can make it easier for the reader to decode and decipher the information. Also, if you have more than three cities and states and/or countries in a paragraph you use a SEMICOLON ";" between entries. You say a list is "ugly", that is YOUR opinion, and it may not be everybody else’s. And you should not assume so. Just because "MOST" have it one way does not make it better, you may have made them that way. At one time MOST people of black skin and African-American decent were slaves in the United States, that didn't make it right, did it? WikiDon 20:14, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Lists are useful because they emphasize certain information in regular text. When you see a list of three or four items strung out vertically on the page, rather than in normal paragraph format, you naturally notice it more and are likely to pay more attention to it. Certain types of lists also make for easier reading. For example, in instructions, it is a big help for each step to be numbered and separate from the preceding or following steps. Lists also create more white space and spread out the text so that pages don't seem like solid walls of words. Online Technical Writing: Lists WikiDon 20:27, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Number of Sister Cities in a list format
Wikipedia has over 10,000 articles with “sister cities” in it Google search “site:wiki.riteme.site "sister cities"” 15,500 hits.
- YOU MAYBE IN LUCK, Yahoo! only finds 1,740! [1], so maybe you have only 1,500 to look at, and 1,200 to redo.
More of these are LISTS than in paragraph form.
Istanbul has 26 sister cities, what a NIGHTMARE that would be to read in paragraph form! Yerevan has 24.
Sister Cities of Cleveland, Ohio Sister Cities of Chicago
Here are some to get you started:
Nagasaki#Sister_Cities Nyköping Municipality Akita, Akita Enköping Municipality Weihai Freiburg Ludwigshafen am Rhein Spokane, Washington Melbourne Fort Worth, Texas Norfolk, Virginia Wichita, Kansas Nässjö Municipality St. Catharines, Ontario Longmont, Colorado Nuremberg Jinan Eksjö Municipality Hefei Kobe Hiroshima Nagoya, Aichi Umeå Municipality Niigata, Niigata McAllen, Texas Geelong, Victoria Thunder Bay, Ontario Incheon
Writing for the Web is very different from writing for print:
- 79% of users scan the page instead of reading word-for-word
- Reading from computer screens is 25% slower than from paper
- Web content should have 50% of the word count of its paper equivalent
Bulleted and numbered lists slow down the scanning eye and can draw attention to important points. Lists: You can include a greater number of lists on a web page than on a printed paper page.Use numbered lists when the order of entries is important.Use unnumbered lists whenever the sequence of the entries is not important.Limit the number of items in a single list to no more than nine.Generally, limit lists to no more than two levels: primary and secondary.

Why would you make such baseless claims without factual backup?
I will have a hard time believing anything else you say.
WikiDon 09:03, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Sir, if I made claims that were falsehoods, I would expect to called on them by another user/contributor (s) here at Wikipedia. All information that is distributed by contributors is, and should be, questioned. If you say that a zebra has spots, don't be surprised if someone questions you about it. If you don't want to be questioned, don't say things that you can't back up. If I said in an edit summary that: "MOST of states list their cities and towns in order of population", I would expect to hear from someone that MOST are listed alphabetically. And then, after I was called on it by another contributor, I repeated the claim, I would expect someone to “fall” on me with a rebuttal. Do NOT remove my statistical proof, that "I" took the time to research, that PROVES you made a misstatement, just because you take it personally. If you have a problem, you take it to Wikipedia:Resolving disputes. Once again you have made up your own rules to suit your cause. Follow the real policy of Wikipedia, not Derek.cashman’s policy. A zebra does not have spots! WikiDon 19:43, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
Three YES or NO Questions:
Did you or did you not make these statements:
- "MOST other city articles list sister cities info this way, not as lists."
- "All you really have to do is to look at the majority of city articles on wikipedia and see that most of them are in the paragraph format, not in list format."
- YES or NO?
Were they falsehoods?
- YES or NO?
Did my statistical analysis call in to question your statements?
- YES or NO?

- Thanks. I realized I was at my third revert, so that's why I didn't revert again. I think 68.9.138.84 went a bit over the line with a few comments in reverting his text; e.g. "Fuck off, deuce bag. I am telling you, I made this from scratch." and "Damn you, you son of a bitch, leave this page alone." don't necessarily tell me that he's trying to work as a team here,... I almost think he should be banned just for using edit comments like that, though it's hard to deal with anonymous users. Dr. Cash 23:38, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, his comments are completely out of line. Im going over the article now looking for the good bits he did add (i personally like the statistic on total bagels produced, although i dont think how high it would stack belongs in an encyclopedia). Hey, I actually deliberately removed the Corporate History section during middle of the revert war, but the removal was quite purposeful: it was lifted verbatim from http://www.brueggers.com/founder.html and is therefore a copyright violation, so I went ahead and removed it per WP:C. ArbCom election
Thanks for your vote in the ArbCom elections. I must have written my candidate statement in a confusing way in order to give you the impression that I am a candidate for a job that I do not want, because this is certainly not the case. As my "reluctance to run" seems to have weighed heavier in your mind than in mine, I just want to give you a slightly fuller explanation (I wanted to keep to 250 words in the opening statement). The reluctance was, as I said, because ArbCom is likely to be an arduous duty and will take away from the time I'm able to spend writing articles. It isn't because I am in any way equivocal about wanting to serve on ArbCom. I enjoy the practice of weighing the evidence and trying to reach consensus, and feel that serving on ArbCom I would be making a very positive contribution to Wikipedia. It occurs, however, that your reference to this may be a polite way of hiding a serious objection concerning how I might behave on ArbCom, and if this is so then I apologise for taking your time. The site ABQblogs.com is a metro blog site for the people of Albquerque, New Mexico. Image Tagging for Image:Ky_unbridled.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Ky_unbridled.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

- Your bot needs to be seriously worked on because it is tagging images that are legitimate and fair-use. The Norfolk Seal image is a city-owned seal of the City of Norfolk, Virginia, which is owned by the city itself, and is public property. The image is also appropriately marked with an image copyright tag, as per wikipedia guidelines, and in fact, was tagged appropriately when this stupid bot found the image!! Furthermore, it's interesting to point out that I have yet to see anyone complaining about any of the city seal images placed on other city pages, either!!
- Your bot also appears to have tagged Image:Ky_unbridled.jpg, which I also uploaded. Unfortunately, I did not hear about this until after it was deleted. However, this image, like the city of Norfolk logo, is the current marketing logo of the state of Kentucky (it's on their website), and as such, is public property. The bot claims that there was no copyright tag in the image, which I beg to differ, as I am always very careful about selecting the correct image copyright tag for all of the images that I upload. In this case, the copyright tag used should be the same one (or very similar one) to the one used by the city of Norfolk seal.
- I think it would be highly advisable if you would please discontinue the use of this bot until issues such as this can be resolved. Dr. Cash 19:29, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- The bot is working perfectly. It does not tag images. Image:NorfolkSeal.gif was tagged as "no source" by User:Pd THOR on March 20. I don't know who tagged Image:Ky_unbridled.jpg, but you can ask an administrator to check the edit history for you. --Carnildo 19:45, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Flag ElPasoTX.jpg
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Flag ElPasoTX.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. I am sorry if it looked like I was messing up the template, but I was trying to make the website for the city a hyperlink just like it does in the county template. I think I fixed it now. --No1lakersfan 01:55, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Coulter "Biography"
Derek -- You recently reverted "Early life" to "Biography." The change to "Early life" had been on Talk:Ann Coulter#"Biography," etc. for two days, with no discussion, so I changed it. It still makes sense, I think. If you look at it and still prefer "Biography," that's fine by me, but I think "Early life" is more descriptive. It, and the next several sections, IMHO, make up her biography. Lou Sander 18:57, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
- See Michael Moore for an example of "Early life." Somehow it isn't a "Biography" if it stops before her media career began. There's probably something better than "Early life," but I can't think of it right now. It covers the time before she became famous. It's not really "early." Maybe "Early life and career?" Your edit to Wal-Mart
Your recent edit to Wal-Mart (diff) was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to recognize and repair vandalism to Wikipedia articles. If the bot reverted a legitimate edit, please accept my humble creator's apologies – if you bring it to the attention of the bot's owner, we may be able to improve its behavior. Click here for frequently asked questions about the bot and this warning. // AntiVandalBot 00:55, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
This is your last warning for editing Wal-Mart (diff). The next time you vandalize a page, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. // AntiVandalBot 00:57, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert a single page more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. Tuxide 01:03, 26 July 2006 (UTC) Just striking out my own warning here, shoulda done this a long time ago. Regards, Tuxide 21:04, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Next time, check your edits: [3] You were removing lots of content from the end of the article. The bot was quite good at noticing the content removal style and reverting it. Kevin_b_er 01:07, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- Ok so its not vandalism, but the bot was still quite accurate at seeing that you were removing content in a way that merits a revert. You probably intended to undo what Tuxide did, but insted you undid it to a version that was damaged by a bug in the google toolbar. Just be more careful about what versions you revert to. Kevin_b_er 01:17, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- It is fine, the bot picked you up because you were reverting to one of my really bad edits and I didn't realize that. The Google Toolbar is evil, dunno why AntiVandalBot picked up your reversion and not my edit. I also left rationale to my last edit on Talk:Wal-Mart#Missing_information_in_Financial_results_section, in case you want to bring this into discussion. It sounds like you are contesting it anyways. Regards, Tuxide 01:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Hi, if you read the instructions on the copyvio tag you would take notice that furhter edits of that page is prohibited, because it is a direct copyright violation there is no way it can be revamped unless it is started up again from scratch. You can use the subpage given in the meantime to make edits or start a new article on the matter. Thanks, Pilotguy (roger that) 01:14, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
No problem, glad to be in communication. --Pilotguy (roger that) 02:02, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Wal-Mart page structure
I see you have made several edits to Wal-Mart over the last few days. I proposed a WikiProject a couple months ago for articles on retailing companies, and my goal was to make all such articles follow a common page layout. You might be interested in checking my proposed page structure out on User:Tuxide/Wikiproject Retailing#Company page structure for ideas, or if you want to comment on it. Hope it helps. Regards, Tuxide 23:11, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Wal-Mart and minor edits
I noticed that most, or all of your edits to Wal-Mart are marked as minor edits. Why? Only trivial edits should be marked as minor, and even then only on pages without any content disputes. I would not consider a lot of these edits as minor. Just thought I would bring it up, since registered people have the option to opt-out displaying minor edits in their edit history listings and their watchlists, so to them it is a major problem. Regards, Tuxide 01:49, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- It is more effective to erode the page using minor edits many times than to just vandalize it once. Abe Froman 20:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Wal-Mart photo
First off, that caption on my user page was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Anyway, I was about to write a paragraph about their practices of opening larger stores and was looking for some sources to back me up, but other things intervened and I sort of forgot about it until the photo was deleted later that day. (Wal-Mart does have a tendency to replace stores in that fashion more often than other chains, which would be a key point of the paragraph.) I'll admit the quality isn't as great as the other photos on the page, though. (By the way, I don't live in Bathurst, but took the photo while passing through.) Apology accepted, and I'd like to offer mine for the "censorship" claim. Kirjtc2 00:51, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Retailing
Hello again, I don't know if you're aware of it but I have just launched WikiProject Retailing a couple days ago and I thought I would bring it to your attention. I don't know if joining it would interest you, but you seem to edit the Wal-Mart related articles often enough that least checking it out could benefit you. Cheers, Tuxide 00:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hello, and welcome! As you've mentioned, I've noticed you've been editing Best Buy as well. We have a partial list of articles that are within the scope of this project, and as of now, no category killers such as Best Buy are included. You could expand the list to include category killers using this process; tagging article talk pages is boring but it is necessary for other users to join this project. As for further improving Wal-Mart and Best Buy, you might be interested in a brainstorming idea for a style guide. I will update this as soon as I have time. Hi. I noticed that you put the article SearchMash up for deletion (review here. I created the page because the site is owned by Google (see here) and I think as it is a testing base for the possible future of Google search, I thought that it was notable enough for an article. WikiProject Louisville growing and changing
WikiProject Louisville is sprouting its wings for 2007! We have a new Assessment Department and a much more refined project template. We have nearly 1,000 articles catalogued for our project. And we still have a lot of work to do. We have 500+ articles left to assess for quality, and all our articles, as always, need tender loving care. Please consider dropping by the project and seeing what you might be able to do to move Louisville-related articles forward. Cheers, and Happy New Year! Stevie is the man! Re: Your revision of Google References....
I was wondering if you could put back the link ^ Jimmy, Newcastle; BBC. "U.S. Federal judge dismised lawsuit against Google Inc.." BBC. Dec 24, 2006. I believe it to be of relevance. What do you think? And why exactly did you remove it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.146.229.106 (talk) 03:49, 12 January 2007 (UTC).
- This reference was removed because it was not directly referencing anything in the text (it was out-of-format). Links to articles in the reference section need to follow the guidelines specified under WP:REF. Adding external links directly to that section is bad form, and links there are generally deleted. Dr. Cash 00:06, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

- The consensus of editors at Wikipedia who have determined that "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball" is policy here seem to "give a frack," so I'm inclined to side with them. I can appreciate the desire to get this kind of information posted on here in an effort to be "the first" source to have it up, but it's simply not how things are supposed to work around here. One way that other editors have approached this is to "comment out" information that is imminently final until after it is indeed final and then "reveal" it, as I did here. Just thought I would let you know that the {{content}} template is there to prevent editors from warring over the inclusion of the ReclaimDemocracy.org url like we have been, and is a temporary resolution that I suggested until consensus has been reached on this. I am personally against its presence; however I would rather the template be there instead of continuously remove the link myself only to have it reinserted. Also, I am considering going to WP:WQA to request an outside source on whether the link merits inclusion in the Wal-Mart article, since consensus obviously cannot be reached with those currently involved in the discussion. I was wondering if you, during your recent surge in Google edits, made the summary paragraphs in concise and full of waffle...? Fark.com, what's the problem?
Why do you apparently think it's your job to take away edits to the Fark.com page? Probably everyone who has edited it is more involved with that site than you are. Why are you deleting content which is clearly relevant and accurate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robw19 (talk • contribs)

Why do you feel that you should edit out Farkisms just because you've never heard of them? Apparently, they are considered common knowledge to members who have been around longer than six months, and can be found in numerous threads throughout the day on practically every day. If you don't know what a poop thread is, you should give up fark entirely. Sure, it's crude and sophomoric, but that is the quintessence of Fark.
