- Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
- Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
- In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
- Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
- Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like
<ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>
, copy the whole thing). - In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
- If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:
==References== {{Reflist}}

[edit]There is a possibility of WP:LINKSPAM with your recent edits. They are adding links to the same website repeatedly, and in some cases they do not seem to be directly relevant to the subject of the article. Please check that the link contains material that would help a reader. ♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:16, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- And the links don't work (anymore). --Millbart (talk) 10:45, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Definately link spam. Recent links edited into Ludwig van Beethoven are not relevant at all to be in that article. In some lesser-known personalities from Portugal it may make sense. Clear self-promotion for own work at National Library of Portugal. Despite being warned the link spam has continued, not sure how to deal with this, maybe Gerda Arendt can help. Gor1995 (talk) 08:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- I reverted those, which are NOT relevant to Beethoven's biography, and probably not even for the individual pieces. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:45, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- I looked at one: it's simply the link to the entry of the National Library of Portugal, which is available anyway in authority control. Clutter. Imagine we would add all links to all these libraries ... - Denise, do you understand that? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- She keeps endlessly adding this links, despite the warnings. I'm not sure how or where to report this, but I think all her edits should be reverted. Gor1995 (talk) 23:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

December 2023 Spam warning
[edit]Please stop. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. Gor1995 (talk) 10:07, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- This is your only warning; if you insert a spam link to Wikipedia again, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted, preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites as well as potentially being penalized by search engines.Seawolf35 T--C 15:58, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
