On the evening of Friday, April 19, we're hosting our first-ever WikiSalon at our K Street office. The WikiSalon will be a twice-monthly informal meetup and collaborative editing event to help build the community of Wikimedia enthusiasts here in DC; please join us for its inaugural session. On Saturday, April 20, we've partnered with the George Washington University to host the All Things GW Edit-a-Thon at the Teamsters Labor History Research Center. Please join us for behind-the-scenes tours of the University Archives and help edit articles about GWU history.

On Tuesday, 28 May there will be a community Wikipedia meeting at the United States National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland - with a second on Thursday, 30 May for those who can't make it on Tuesday. You can participate either in-person, or via an online webinar. If you attend in person, USB sticks (but not external drives) are ok to use.

I'm sorry for the last-minute notice, but on Saturday, June 8, from 3 to 6 PM, Wikimedia DC and the Cato Institute are hosting a Legislative Data Meetup. We will discuss the work done so far by WikiProject U.S. Federal Government Legislative Data to put data from Congress onto Wikipedia, as well as what more needs to be done. If you have ideas you'd like to contribute, or if you're just curious and feel like meeting up with other Wikipedians, you are welcome to come! Be sure to RSVP here if you're interested.

I'm not sure what you're question is getting at. Microsoft is a huge software giant, responsible for a huge share of the market of electronics and software. Again, there must be some claim to notability per WP:NOTABLE. The mere fact that the company exists, or even that new companies have articles, is not acceptable in and of itself. Barnstar inflation

If barnstars are awarded for short inaccurate articles with outstanding disputes on their talk page then barnstars are worth less. I've removed mine "awarded" by you and been provoked thereby to go and fix ATC Zero - a made-up article about an almost non-existent term. Wikipedia must not be the place where neologisms are given their unwarranted prominence and status! "ATC Zero" is now WRONGLY defined everywhere on the web quoting a B*LLSH*T article at WP. I, sir, am surprised and upset at the manner in which your criticism has been brought against me – accurate as it may be, I can think of no justification for such a blistering response to a gesture shown to you with only the best of intentions. I understand that you may not want the barnstar, and you are free to remove it if you wish, as you already did. You are free to tell me that I should not have given you the barnstar. You are free to be upset with me over the article. You are free to make drastic changes to the article in order to correct any inaccuracies you see. If you feel that the article is beyond salvaging, nominate it for deletion. In fact, if you were to nominate it for deletion, I would join you in calling for its removal. All I ask, however, is that all of these things are done with civility and respect, and that you assume, before all else, that other editors have the best intentions. I don't want to come across as trying to lecture you, as you are certainly far more experienced than I am. I simply want to share my own concerns with you. If I upset you, I apologize. Understand that it was not, by any means, my intention to do so. But all of your sentiments that you expressed to me, I believe, could have been expressed more calmly. I succinctly summarised the position as I saw it. Feel free to take as much responsibility for the position as you like - you take far more than I think appropriate. But if the cap fits etc. However your response verges on the passive aggressive - I have not criticised you in the ways you say/imply. I'm currently in Europe at the moment, and that is why I took such a long time to respond. While I don't consider myself to have been passive aggressive, I recognize that you may have interpreted my comments differently. Rightly or wrongly, I considered the use of caps lock and profanity uncivil, and your statement that you had been provoked to fix ATC zero to be an assumption of bad faith. I understand that I may be quite wrong in my assumption, and if so, tell me – but I ask that you understand what I saw in your comment. Now, on to your question: why would I award barnstars for a useless article, and why do I now wish to see it deleted? To answer the first part of your question, you and I simply have different views of what constitutes criteria for awarding a barnstar. My standard is lower than yours. To answer the second part – why I wish to see the article deleted – is simply because I do not wish to have any part in the spread of false or inaccurate information. I recognize, however, that I am too late. Prior to my giving you a barnstar, I thought that the information was accurate. Now, I recognize that not only is it inaccurate, but that a number of the citations may have been influenced by the false information in the article itself. I should note that my original source was a History Channel documentary titled Grounded on 9/11, which used the term ATC zero, though they almost certainly used it in the same context as the 9/11 Commission Report. I misconstrued it to be defined as it is in the current, inaccurate, article. I again thank you for sharing your concerns with me, and I want to also apologize, both for having spread false information, and for having upset you (if, in fact, I did upset you). The one thing an encyclopedia cannot usefully be is mediocre. As everyone refers to WP nowadays any article here quickly becomes an authority, poor quality or not. Where do the History Channel researchers do their research? Here as much as anywhere. Whether something is true or false is often not a matter of opinion. Giving everyone a barnstar for no good reason gives an appearance of quality where none is due. I think if you reward nonsense you will get nonsense. Paul Beardsell (talk) 15:44, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
