Hi David notMD,
And it was a DYK on 21 February 2018. Splendid! I was quite unaware that it had been included as part of a stamp set.
Thank you so much for improving the article: this sort of collaborative work is why I so enjoy being a Wikipedia editor.

DYK nomination of Vitamin deficiency (declined)

Hello! Your submission of Vitamin deficiency at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 23:49, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Expansion of length of existing article did not qualify for DYK because it did not take into account that some of the expansion was content copied in from other articles (content copied in separately has to undergo 5X expansion to qualify). David notMD (talk) 14:11, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Hemothorax GA

Why should the MRI be removed? One MRI image looks perfectly fine to me.

In my opinion the image is too dark/murky, and also that infants not discussed in text as having hemothorax. Don't know if this was trauma caused or something infancy specific. I will defer final decision to PeaBrainC, who is a physician. David notMD (talk) 15:09, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Soy allergy article

Hi David, I see you have a background in foods and allergies, so you feel you know what you are talking about, and I can respect that. For my part I have been living with a severe soy allergy for many years, and almost died from a combination of prescribed medication and food last year, because there is so much bad information believed to be true by the medical profession on this topic. It got to the point I could barely walk, and had no resistance to any common cold because I was being exposed to soy in so many small daily ways that my immune system was shot and my joints and many internal organs swollen/inflamed.

You wrote, after deleting my section on treatment: "Not related to Treatment, which is where it was added, the references do not meet WP:MEDRS, the concept of avoiding soy-containing foods is covered elsewhere."

But is it? The system I described is the ONLY treatment that has been effective for me and many other severe soy allergy individuals. It is not as fast acting as epinephrine, but it is much more effective in treating a soy allergy. The medical profession does not describe this in detail anywhere else I have found. Likewise, it is not described in detail anywhere else on wikipedia. I have had to find it through word of mouth, from other individuals with severe soy allergies. Please help me spread this important information. People are getting sick and literally dying from complications for lack of this information.

Source material in the form of medical profession resources and journals may be hard to find: very few people in medicine are studying this. The soy lobby has aggressively worked to drive funding away from this topic, as soy is a 40 billion dollar industry, and information about allergies cut into profits. I understand this, we live in a capitalist society, and the winners write the rules. But I'm not dead yet, and people need to know this information if they have serious soy allergy too.

I have no trouble knowing what works for a soy allergy at this point. Any help you can offer in finding sources if they exist would be greatly appreciated.
--Shanefiddle (talk) 08:53, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the links. You stated in your reversion note that describing how to eat soy does not belong in the treatment section. Could you explain that further? The reason I added the section on the problem of eating to the treatment section is that is where the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology puts it, although instead of calling it just "Treatment" they call the section "Management and Treatment" which is more accurate. (ACAAI)
--Shanefiddle (talk) 10:53, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

I moved the list of soy foods and soy containing ingredients to within Treatment, Section Avoiding soy. As with the other Wikipedia allergy articles, a list is appropriate, but a how-to is not. David notMD (talk) 01:58, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

The Mayo Clinic and others recommend avoiding all soy-sourced ingredients for individuals with a soy allergy. Would that not include avoiding citric acid from soy sources, even if it has been exempted from allergen labeling requirements? I do think citric acid should be in the section on less-allergenic ingredients. Thoughts? --Shanefiddle (talk) 18:47, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Take this up at the Talk page for the article. The Mayo Clinic article is not the ultimate resource. MC tends to over-simplify for a lay readership. Unless there is an article in a peer-reviewed science journal confirming soy-sourced citric acid as a proven allergen, any mention of citric acid does not belong in the article. David notMD (talk) 20:23, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
I am confused. Please help me understand. I thought this category was for ingredients that are not always required to be labelled as a soy allergen by the US FDA. There is no peer-reviewed journal confirming Highly Refined Soybean Oil as a proven allergen, in fact quite the opposite. Yet it remains in the article. Soy Lecithin does requires labeling: why is it in this sub-list instead of listed with the other ingredients? I have gone to the article's talk page, thanks for suggesting it. --Shanefiddle (talk) 23:28, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out to me that Z upgraded the Soy Allergy page to C class - and congratulations on good work well done. What do you think were the reasons they did not believe it was ready for B class? --Shanefiddle (talk) 05:34, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Hershey Felder

Thank you for your note, Doctor. To answer your question, I am an admirer of Hershey Felder's work dating back to 2001. Regarding my lack of Wikipedia editing experience, I use the site regularly for research but do not have sufficient knowledge to contribute on other topics. It was only when a friend mentioned the somewhat negative tone of the article (as well as an odd concentration on atypical media coverage) that I chose to make the edits. I respect Wikipedia's integrity and reliability.

Question

Hi David notMD, Would it be easier to have my submission accepted if I revised the article and submitted it as a Stub instead?DriverSafety (talk) 00:04, 28 January 2020 (UTC) Hi David notMD, Thanks for the clarification. I found another reference that I believe meets the 4 criteria of notability. It is a 761-word article in a major French-language Montreal daily, titled "A unique opportunity for Virage Simulation". It describes the potential entry into the Saudi Arabian market. The company name is mentioned nine times. The content includes interviews with the president and vice-president, a description of company activities, e.g. 15% of the annual budget devoted to research and development, and a profile summary listing the location of the head office, the names of the founders, the number of employees, and the languages spoken by the employees. I believe, and please correct me if I am wrong, that this story has enough depth of coverage to make it significant, and the media source is independent and reliable and secondary. I would say this attests to the company's notability. Would you agree? And is the fact that it is in French a barrier? Two other references already cited in the submission I believe also meet the four criteria. One is a 500-word La Presse article focused exclusively on the Virage Simulation company, its history, products and programs. The second is a 870-word Montreal Gazette feature article that is exclusively about the Virage Simulation company, its history, products and programs. Unfortunately, the Gazette article is behind a firewall and I believe that the last editor to decline the submission did not actually look at it. Are three articles that check off all four boxes of the notability criteria sufficient?DriverSafety (talk) 15:41, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Follow up on your answer to my Tea House question

Hello, David not MD. It's a pleasure to meet you. I read your bio and saw all your awards and must admit I'm a bit embarrassed to be taking up your time. I'm a newbie, but I have completed 10+ edits and have drafted an article not yet moved to the Main Space. Also would like to say I share a few areas of interest with you as I'm a retired registered dietitian and enjoy some areas of history. OK, to my question: A couple of days ago I asked how to delete an unwanted reference in my draft article. You answered I should click on Edit in that section (would that be under References or on the superscript in the article text? BTW, I work in Visual Edit). Under References I clicked on the offending reference and a box popped up with the word Edit, but after clicking on that it wasn't obvious what to do next. So, could you kindly provide more specificity, step by step? I apologize if this sounds a bit dense. Even in Visual Edit, I don't find this particular task intuitive. Thanking you in advance. E54495a (talk) 19:00, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Answer is where the superscript is in the text. Delete it there and it vanishes from the ref list and all subsequent refs get renumbered. If your draft does not have sections or if the ref is in the Lead, click on Edit in the top menu bar. Hope this makes sense. David notMD (talk) 20:21, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response, David not MD. Success! One more for you, if I may. I read on a Wikipedia Wiki page just recently that it was a good idea to save one's new article draft for oneself before uploading it, and this could be done in such a way that all the digital wonders were saved as well (e.g., being able to run the cursor over an inline reference and seeing the entry, etc.). Now I can't find the page that explained how to do this. By any chance, can you direct me to it? Thanks. E54495a (talk) 15:00, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
If what you are working on is identified as Draft, you could copy it to your Sandbox, retaining all the formating. Be aware that if a draft is Declined, or even Rejected (considered fixable versus never going to happen), either way the draft is not deleted. The exceptions are if draft contains copyright material it will be deleted without recovery; also, if clearly person- or business-promotional, or original thinking type essay, deleted without recovery. But for same reasons a reviewer could delete the draft, will also delete the Sandbox. Last recourse is to create a copy on your computer. David notMD (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Draft:Suresh Sharma

I have talked to Theroadislong . I have explain him everything and about your query of the current The Hindu website , for this i have explain to Theroadislong and i will explain same thing to you please signup in The Hindu website and then sign in after that you will be able to see those two article . I have ask Theroadislong but he is saying he cannot do from UK , then i asked him to give his email i will mail him but i did not get any reply from him .so i copy and pasted article in talks. But still i have not received any reply from Theroadislong. Alekh99 (talk) 14:42, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

I talked to Theroadislong yesterday but still i have no reply from him please tell me further instructions. Alekh99 (talk) 14:44, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

I have seen message which you left on Theroadislong tslk page . I think something is not clear to you i have created suresh sharma page for environmentalist as he campaigned for the protection of kadam tree . I am creating a page for diabetes treatment or medicine or invention. In those two article it clear that suresh sharma has filed a writ for a protection of kadam tree . Please check page of suresh sharma i have put him as Indian environmentalist . Alekh99 (talk) 16:07, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

In my opinion the draft Suresh Sharma as written will not be accepted because it does not achieve Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Same opinion on Kadam extract as a diabetes treatment. I am not a reviewer, so I have no power to make a decision on this draft or any other draft. David notMD (talk) 16:35, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
But why you deleted mention about suresh sharma on page of neolamarckia cadamba. That article has significant mention that suresh sharma has filed a writ to protect kadam tree.i have previously asked the editors for neolamarckia cadamba edit of suresh sharma and cleared them everything also i have a article specially on a writ filed by suresh sharma for protection of kadam tree but it not available online as it is of year 2004 so i ask editors tell me how to upload that article but they got satisfied with The Hindu article . Explain why you deleted s.Also wiki general notability guidelines states clearly that wiki needs significant coverage but does not need to be the main topic of source material Alekh99 (talk) 16:57, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
For the article about the tree, I removed that content because I did not consider it useful, i.e., undue weight. I see that another editor is of the same opinion. Next step for you is to start a discussion on your proposed content on the Talk page. Repeating your changes in the face of opposition without discussion is considered edit warring and could lead to you being temporarily blocked from editing. Hey David notMD,

I am a little lost as to why you posted Wikipedia:Teahouse#Problem_editor at the Teahouse? Was that an accident or is there a specific reason as I do not typically see those there.

Rollbacker and thanks

Hi David notMD. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Sadads (talk) 20:12, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

I saw that you helped diagnose one of the problem editors for #1lib1ref: thank you! Typically we don't run into that kind of problem because most of the library community is thoughtful about sources -- however, we have had a few over enthusiastic, and underinformed participants this round, Sadads (talk) 20:12, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for the Rollback resource. I had hoped that the editor in question was making only some mistakes, but the more I looked, the more it was clear that the editor was doing only some form of cursory search and then indiscriminately adding citations. Oh, well. David notMD (talk) 20:18, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
I really appreciate all the work that you did to clean that up -- it seems like there is another step in training this cohort of participants -- luckily we have communications with many of them, so opportunity to help folks learn from their mistakes. Sadads (talk) 21:33, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Biodiversity Park, Visakhapatnam

Sir, I am Bmantha ..Dr. M. R. Murty, a retired Professor from Andhra University, Andhra Pradesh, India from affiliated College. Pl. accept my apologies in the very beginning .. as I have not responded to you immediately. The reason.. I am entirely new to the Wikipedia language and this is my first article. I am the founder member to Dolphin Nature Conservation Society (DNCS) a voluntary, non-governmental, non profitable, eco-friendly organisation formed mainly with teachers and students. We have started developing this Biodiversity Park, Visakhapatnam, India , in the year 2002. Up to 2013 we have maintained it with our own funds and some donations from students and philanthropists. From 2013 onwards, in coordination with government agencies VMRDA and Government Hospital authorities we are maintaining it. Our main objective is to make this garden useful to students and researchers at large. As a teacher in biology this is also my wish to serve the student community practically. I request you to go through my User page (Just now I have learnt how to create it), for details. I am new entirely to this wiki language and other important things, and with the help of reviewers I am slowly learning. This is my first article sir. I am extending my heartfelt thanks to you for reviewing it, advising me, and above all your expert editing ..Really you have spared much of your valuable time. You're a 'Featured Host'

Hi David. You may have seen this announcement that all the 'Featured Hosts' - whose names and pictures randomly cycle round in the Teahouse Header - have just been updated.

As you are currently one of the 29 most active editors at WP:TH, your name and an image has now replaced that of an inactive host. But because you haven't yet added yourself to the full list of active hosts, I have simply used the default image of a cup of green tea. It would be great if you would now do two things:

  • Check or change the 'featured host' image allocated to you. Edit it at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/9, or undo my changes if you don't wish to be 'featured'.
  • Create a 'host profile' for yourself, and choose a relevant picture - click the 'Experienced editor?' button in the TH Header to formally sign up to create a separate entry on the full list of all 89 current hosts which new editors can view.

Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 09:30, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hi David, thanks so much for your edits on the page Sano Genetics, I was wondering if you had any more suggestions to make it conform to Wikipedia standards, or whether it is good enough yet to submit for review? I want to make sure the page is as good as possible before I submit, and any help would be really appreciated! Either way, thanks and all the best - Clarealev (talk) 08:51, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

@Clarealev: First, kudos for declaring your paid relationship. Current link is Draft:Sano Genetics. In general, my opinion is that it is {{WP:TOOSOON]] for Sano to be a subject of a Wikipedia article. A quick internet search found little about Sano that was not created by Sano. Interviews are not considered valid references (your ref #1). Mention of Heterogeneous should be deleted from the text and Info box. The entire Funding section should be deleted - funding does not convey notability. Ditto delete Podcast section - what a company says about itself has no weight. If these deletion recommendations are followed, there is not enough 'there' there to merit an article. You may choose to submit, but I bet it will be declined. There are options to self-delete the draft (not really needed, it will never show up on search engines), or let it go fallow and you will get a should-this-be-deleted notice in about six months. David notMD (talk) 13:34, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
@David notMD: Thanks for your advice on this, it's been really helpful. I'll wait for more to be published about the company and hopefully there will be enough to meet Wiki's notability criteria then. As a sidenote, why do you think the mention of Heterogeneous should be deleted? And if you have any other advice it'd take it on gladly! Hope you have a great day. - Clarealev (talk) 15:37, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Hydrogen Water

TarnavaA looks like a real name. Google shows one Alex Tarnava who is CEO of a company selling - you guessed it! - hydrogen water. i wonder if they are, by any chance, related? Guy (Help!) 01:09, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

@JzG: @TarnavaA: TarnavaA has a declared COI, and thus has stopped editing the article directly. I do not have a COI. What I do have is a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from MIT and a long career in dietary supplement science. I am retired, and do not have a COI. Even when I was consulting to DS companies, none of them ever sold hydrogen water. The review references I re-added to the article meet WP:MEDRS. David notMD (talk) 11:55, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

...and are probably fine in the context of a discussion of how there are a few small studies that are not yet conclusive. That wasn't what the hydrogen water shill wanted though. Guy (Help!) 12:26, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Yes, but does not get until the science gets a lot better. In the past I have cut some of the dietary supplement articles by a third or more because company representatives and well-meaning non-scientists get too enthusiastic. When I was consulting, my nickname was "Dr. No." as in "No, you can't say that." David notMD (talk) 13:05, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Guy, I find your insinuations quite troubling. I never once asked for anything other than what David wrote, a balanced article using the literature reviews not poorly written pop science articles. To clarify I didn't ever make any direct edits, and in my first post declared a COI, and put it on my user page, so it was up front to anyone I was corresponding with. I criticized you, Guy, for a poorly written stub when a proper and accurate enough article was written. You also seem to think that because I am from industry, I cannot be partial.. the fact is, I am more reserved in my positions and more partial than many of the public researchers in the field which I correspond with weekly (or other fields). To clarify on partiality, I do not need this field to succeed, I am thoroughly interested by it and left a more profitable business to pursue it. Many Professors "need" their research to succeed, across all fields. I routinely put out very cautious positions on the science, for my audience, and share and attempt to scale back claims for all using my IP (the tablet industry using my IP greatly eclipses the ready to drink category in North America). NCBI, also referred to as PubMed and the Library of Medicine, lists all science published in journals, including journals with a poor reputation. Wikipedia has a policy described at WP:MEDRS to limit what can be cited to review articles published in reputable journals. Hence, not cell studies, animal studies, or sadly, not individual human trials. This makes Wikipedia a trailing indicator of what is going on in science. Some articles will have a Research section at the bottom, where less-than-solid research can be presented. David notMD (talk) 20:53, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

So, from now on how many references make a point strong and not a merd. Will more than or equal to 4 reference do the job?

Hey bro i mentioned about nicotine maybe useful to treat some disease like narcolepsy, parkinsons, adhd etc. If you like you could move that to `==Research==` coz nicotine/ nicotinic agonist are currently being researched. In that way it wont sound medicinal but being researched.

Place to add chemical composition?

What is optimum place to add chemical composition ? Plant? Animal? Anywhere else? Machinexa (talk) 05:00, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

I don't know why it's displaying "https://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2014/240243/" Machinexa (talk) 05:01, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

I m going to add more chem constituents in more plant but I don't know it's right to add or now. How do I know? Machinexa (talk) 05:42, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Please stop adding plant constituents. Plants contain hundreds of compounds. Listing them, even a partial list, even a list limited to compounds that have an existing Wikipedia article (hence a blue Wikilink) does not contribute to the value of the articles. An exception: if the compound(s) in question have health effects attributed to them can consider presenting that evidence (referenced), but not as a list without content about those effects. David notMD (talk) 11:31, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Ok Machinexa (talk) 15:46, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Ok so I searched about it. I got a lot of wikipedia pages and found out that lot of chemical composition in lot of pages without even describing their medical properties. Asparagus_racemosus Dioscorea_composita I know that adding all the compounds can bring a such a list that can never end. I from now on will try to add alkaloid content only will that be right? Coz alkaloids MOSTLY are either extremely medicinal / extremely toxic. Will that be okay.

Machinexa (talk) 16:02, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Also one more benefit of creating chemical composition with [ [ ]] boxes is that we know that it doesn't exist as it's highlighted in red. So that way I created lot of pages like vobtusine and voacamine. I mean when I see a wiki page in 2019 having some compound as red I search but find no article to create new page. I look again at wiki INSTEAD of going to pdf then looking each of them whether they exist or not in wiki then adding them in 2020. Now I find article and I create that page. So yes it may add value Machinexa (talk) 16:06, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Not voacamine but lot of 'vo' starting compounds Machinexa (talk) 16:11, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Btw why did u decrease [[ ]] boxes in tabernaemontana divaricata Machinexa (talk) 16:17, 6 July 2020 (UTC) Because these were red Wikilinks which I believed would never become articles. If you create such articles, then you can make the compound names blue Wikilinks. David notMD (talk) 16:21, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

What about chemical composition and sources section

What about chemical composition and sources section? What about them . From now on i only make new page. ONlY ADD alkaloid content in chemical composition and plant /animal sources of chemicals. Is that okay? From now on no MERD, no shit. Also when 1000 people are tested in internet-advertisement based for some substance is it MERD?

An internet advertisement claiming that people used a substance and had a health benefit does not qualify as a reliable source for medical referencing. David notMD (talk) 08:41, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Does WP:MERDS apply for research?

Ok so when you hear `==research==` section the first thing in you mind comes that research is going on (and not proven). So is it possible to apply in-vitro study in `==Research==` section. Like Coronaridine has acetylcholinesterase activity in-vitro which is medical if given in pharmacology. However author often say things like `further study are needed` and other stuff. So can i put those stuff in research coz research is a place where people see and find research is going on OR research must be done. like Donepezil research is going on in Lewy body dementia but that doesnt mean Donepezil treats lewy body dementia. In same way if i put Coronaridine may inhibit AChE , doest mean it inhibits in Human and thus in no way related to medicine (and free from WP:MERDS) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Machinexa (talkcontribs) 08:16, 8 July 2020 (UTC) Machinexa (talk) 08:17, 8 July 2020 (UTC) Machinexa (talk) 08:17, 8 July 2020 (UTC) Machinexa (talk) 08:17, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

I personally limit content I add to "Research" that is supported by at least one good human trial, perhaps more than one, but lacking a published review of multiple trials. That means not doing so if the only evidence is animal work or in vitro. A major flaw of in vitro evidence is that cells in culture are exposed to chemical compounds that would never reach those cells because of absence of absorption after oral consumption, or else same chemical compounds, absorbed, are quickly metabolically converted into other compounds in the intestinal cells or liver. All of them are human trials.

Do you approve this as passing WP:MERDS test and fit for `==research==` section? Also, its not a doctor's blog now but human trial

Given Ref #4 (Stein) is a review of multiple trials, use only that one, and incorporate into the article proper rather than in a 'Research' section. David notMD (talk) 20:36, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Hmm, doesn't four individual human trial satisfy it? Also for research section you told human trials are necessary. Then why delete.? Machinexa (talk) 07:10, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

In many instances there are many clinical trials - with varying results. For example, for glucosamine as a treatment for osteoarthritis, there are more than 50 clinical trials. Some showed a statistically significant benefit, some not. Wikipedia strongly prefers citing review that summarize the evidence rather than individual trials because an editor may select just the positive trials. In a research section it may be appropriate to state that human trials are evaluating treatment for a condition, but there cannot be a statement that the product is or may be a treatment for that condition. You are the author of this draft and are an experienced editor. Are you aware of any reason why it should not be accepted? The redirect is not a reason, because it is merely a technical difficulty, and I know of at least two legitimate ways and at least one illegitimate way to deal with it. kindly explain

Is "essential vitamin" not a redundant tautology?

best regards,

KaiKemmann (talk) 01:35, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

No. For humans, niacin and vitamin D are vitamins, but not essential, as niacin can be synthesized from tryptophan, and vit D in skin exposed to UV radiation. For many animal species, vitamin C is not essential. David notMD (talk) 10:27, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining, although I feel, that the introduction of Vitamin needs to be updated accordingly.
It is stated there "A vitamin [...] is an essential micronutrient which an organism needs [...] cannot be synthesized in the organism, either at all or not in sufficient quantities, and therefore must be obtained through the diet. Vitamin C can be synthesized by some species but not by others; it is not a vitamin in the first instance but is in the second."
Particularly the last sentence sounds like a substance is only called a vitamin in regard of a certain species if it is essential. So by this definition vitamins should always be essential really, as they wouldn't be called vitamins otherwise.
best regards,
KaiKemmann (talk) 09:17, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Change if you wish and I will not revert. David notMD (talk) 09:20, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
You have a far better knowledge of the matter than I have. It could just as well be argued that a vitamin is always a vitamin, as long as it is essential to any mammal (or even any organism?). In this case it would make sense to make the distinction between just a "vitamin" and an "essential vitamin" depending on its effect on the species in question.
I am thus not sure which of the two instances should be changed and I would be more comfortable if you could suggest a unified definition and maybe change one or both articles accordingly.
many thanks,
KaiKemmann (talk) 21:54, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

It is not right to have BALCO scandal as a highlight and dominant topic of Remi’s page. Is that all we have to say about his currently 88 year old life? MEDRS violation?

Hi David,

Could you take a look at this recent edit of the Nicotine replacement therapy page and let me know if it violates WP:MEDRS? I learned about this policy via my interactions with you but I'm still not sure I understand it completely and wanted to confirm before removing it. Specifically, I am referring to the following line, under "Side effects": "Preliminary studies indicate that oral nicotine replacement therapies may lead to the endogenous formation of significant amounts of the strong carcinogen N-Nitrosonornicotine."

https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Nicotine_replacement_therapy&oldid=971536065

Thank you! Wallnot (talk) 20:13, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Clearly does not meet MEDRS. Mentioning that it is a preliminary study does not absolve the fact that it is an observation in a small number of subjects in observational clinical studies. A search on N-Nitrosonornicotine and oral nicotine replacement did not find better literature. Should be reverted with Edit summary as to why. David notMD (talk) 00:03, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Consolidation of the fat article?

David - what do you think of one editor's decision to have 6-8 individual articles on fats (saturated, unsaturated, polyunsaturated, fatty acids, etc.) brought under one consolidated article? Joanne Pransky

Thank you for the helpful information. We are university students examining the validity of Wiki and bias. This page reached us because we are examing how loosely the word expert is being used. Especially since COVID-19, we need to be wary of who is the expert to listen. How is this person an expert based on the references? She is interesting but any attempt to clarify her credential, for instance, her degree is not in robotics, is erased and her references are not peer-reviewed but pop culture. Seems she may have paid a team of people to protect the page. How can our university class move to the next level of asking an editorial team to review the notability of this page? Thank you for helping us rookies!

RobotDaneellives There is no evidence that Joanne Pransky created or even edited the article about her, nor paid someone to 'protect' it. Which, by the way, would require those editors to declare their paid status (see WP:PAID). And there are no 'editorial teams'. The article in question is already tagged as bing of dubious Wikipedia notability. The best avenue for you is to follow my advice to file an AfD. At the very least, that would be educational. GA noms for Vitamin K and Fish allergy

Let's make a deal – Vitamin K

My MEDRS requirement is to add enough secondary reviews to Step aerobics so that the fact tags are satisfied and removed. You can see a few fact tags on the page and my thoughts expressed at Talk:Step aerobics#MEDRS compliance. What say you? Binksternet (talk) 03:09, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Answered there and on your Talk. Sadly, lots of belief, a bit of clinical trial literature, but almost nothing in useful review articles. Multiple trials measuring same thing needed to perform a meta-analysis or systematic review. David notMD (talk) 18:04, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for digging around. I'm beginning to see why the fitness topics on Wikipedia are such a barren desert. Binksternet (talk) 18:19, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
From 2004-2019 my career was expert science consultant to dietary supplement companies. Similar problem - as nothing was patentable, clinical trials if any, tended to be small. Sometimes there are multiple trials, but for different indication, so no meta-analysis possible. There are exceptions - glucosamine or chondroitin for osteoarthritis, for example. Within exercise, there are meta-analyses for weight loss, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer, all-cause mortality, etc. (see PMID: 31685526).
