Place name searches time period

[edit]

@DankJae Would it not be more appropriate to limit searches to results found during the last 3 or 6 months which would reflect current use of terminology rather than historical use? Just a thought. Titus Gold (talk) 16:23, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh not all results are to be used, Ngrams is mainly for long-standing debates rather than recent changes. Largely don’t apply if it is a recent change. DankJae 16:49, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake)

[edit]

I also forsee a debate about Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) in future. Seems to be more use of term Llyn Tegid. Titus Gold (talk) 16:30, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes agree, I had a dispute putting Llyn Tegid in the past fully support a debate. DankJae 16:48, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The national park authority has just voted to call it only Llyn Tegid; obviously WP:OFFICIALNAMES continues to apply. Ham II (talk) 14:47, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes I’ve seen the NPA made a lake name list. While I don’t expect the title to change yet, I believe an argument can be made to at least move it out of parenthesis. DankJae 14:58, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh Language Commissioner's list

[edit]

Interesting page! There was some heated discussion at Talk:Carnedd Llewelyn many years ago; that could be worth adding to the list. You might also want to look at the Welsh Language Commissioner's list of standardised Welsh place names. It makes recommendations for usage in English as well as Welsh, in some cases leaning further towards Welsh orthography than our article titles do: Aber-carn instead of Abercarn, Aberclydach for Aber Village, Blaen-waun for Blaenwaun, Cricieth for Criccieth, Cwmbrân for Cwmbran, Llandaf for Llandaff, Llanedern for Llanedeyrn, Pen-y-lan for Penylan. (The only instances I've found of it going the other way are Abercrave, for which we have Abercraf, Little Newcastle for Casnewydd Bach and Newchurch for Llannewydd.) @Ham II, Thanks, will consider. Yes I have noticed the WLC's list long ago, ofc they are only one source, but they should apparently be adopted by councils so influential to some degree. I have used the list to add {{Lang-cy}} templates to some articles where they lacked a Welsh name or had an alternative, although would probably have to raise how to format it, tried using "standardised" such as at Bettisfield where that name was used by WLC in Welsh rather than the one Wiki came up with. Will check the others you suggested, still trying to set up a methodology that can make researching and proposing easier and indepth enough for these controversial RMs. DankJae 21:29, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just found another one: Bwlchgwyn is Bwlch-gwyn in the list. Re Possibly all Peny → Pen-y places on your page, that's a good call but some of those names wouldn't be affected if the stress is on the penultimate syllable as is usual in Welsh: Penydarren, Penymynydd and the various Penyrheols are examples from the list. (Following that rule the list has Penycoedcae and Penygarnedd, while we have Pen-y-coedcae and Pen-y-garnedd.) You can see which are which by searching the list for Peny and for Pen-. @Ham II, happy to add Bwlchgwyn, although as a local never seen the hyphenated name used (yet) so not a near-term proposal. Possibly Peny → Pen-y is just a vague reminder that I'd need to check them if I wish, ofc not all them may be used enough or at all to justify an RM based on common use, but would look at existing Peny and Pen- articles for guidance. Diolch! DankJae 21:39, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seems I already noticed Bwlchgwyn lol DankJae 21:40, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Amend, I'll only consider list of standardised Welsh place-names in Ceredigion because the council are to adopt them. Although tbh why should I follow the WLC to a whim, when Wicipedia doesn't even bother.
Nonetheless, I created the lists of standardised Welsh place-names if unaware. DankJae 14:12, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One to consider for this list? I haven't looked into it but it seems unlikely that the current article title would pass WP:COMMONNAME. Ham II (talk) 10:26, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ham II, maybe, the current appeals as a compromise to me, as I see both “Dŵr Cymru” and “Welsh Water” used in news articles, as well as both together. Especially as it was originally moved to “Dŵr Cymru (Welsh Water)” which was a odd format until a tech requested it to the current. But would consider it if I find overwhelming use for one of the two names, as the original move doesn’t seem to use any article title arguments. DankJae 11:13, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
