Athletic Club and San Mames

Hi. When I put the desambinguation Basque Country I would want to put Basque Country (autonomous community), and I've put Athletic Club for Athletic Bilbao, cause people from Bilbao, Bizkaia and Basque Country (greater region) use to call to the football team Athletic Club and they don´t like that foreigners call to the team Athletic de Bilbao or Athletic Bilbao, cause the full name is Athletic Club, see the name of their web: athletic-club.net. Maybe for people that isn´t basque is strange, but that is the usual name of the team in Bilbao and Bizkaia: football is football... Sorry for my english. All the best. A new format for prolific content providers

I love your bot- its is absolutely essential- but the language becomes a little wearing and it is truncated in the new message/ notification flashes. Could we opt for more terse wording, with the meat up front. From the content providers point of view:

PAGENAME: shows disambiguation problems on LINK1....LINKn. Sorry to trouble you. DPL bot

would be fine. If this is a newby editor. You then could continue with the existing text. (I am not watching this page :reply to-- Clem Rutter (talk) 10:13, 18 October 2014 (UTC) )

Malfunction at Brian Bennett

The Bot is going nuts on the Brian Bennett article. It's repeatedly inserting warning tags onto the article, commenting about having too many incoming links to a dab page. But the article not a dab page. At the moment, there are three of those warnings at the top of the (non-dab) article. —BarrelProof (talk) 10:49, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Please also see Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation pages with links#Brian Bennett. —BarrelProof (talk) 11:00, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

DPL's gone a bit weird at À l'Olympia. There definitely aren't more than 30 incoming links from articles (I made the necessary dab edits myself on the 17th), yet the bot decided to tag it with {{incoming links}}. --VeryCrocker (talk) 10:06, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Monique van Heist

Monique van Heist was cut down considerably on October 19th as part of an ongoing AfD. It currently has only about nine internal links, none of which appear to be to DAB pages. User:Tomwsulcer removed the dablinks template on October 20th, but DPL bot put it back on the 21st. Could it be seeing an outdated version of the page? Cnilep (talk) 08:20, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

I get that the message I received is from a "bot", and no real person actually checked the change I made, but if a real person did take a look, they would see that I inserted the link in a hatnote to help readers find articles about other people with similar names. That would seem to be a perfectly legitimate reason to link to a disambiguation page, no? -AndrewDressel (talk) 13:56, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @AndrewDressel: Legitimate reason, yes. Correct form, no. See this guideline, which calls for such links to point to a title that contains the parenthetical term "(disambiguation)", even if that is a redirect. If you follow that advice, the bot will not bug you. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:40, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Nimrainayat6290 (talk) 11:24, 12 November 2014 (UTC) Hi, Im very sorry for that I made you to write on my talkpage. Actually, I am a new user and I dont know well how to use wikipedia. I can only add or edit stuff on others'articles, moreover, I dont even know how to reply someone's message. I am trying to get myself used to it through wikipedia help etc. I wanted to ask you if I really need to undo the changes I made on these articles that you talked about. Thanks....

First, you're talking to a a bot, which is programmed to detect disambiguation page links, not reply. You replied to it correctly, though, the same way you can reply to any message. I have nothing to do with this bot, but sometimes answer questions people ask it.
You don't need to undo, I undid it for you. But so you know, when the bot leaves you a message, it'll use the problem word, like Punjabi. Click that to find the sort of Punjabi you want (people, not language or horses). Then pipe the word into the full article, like [[Punjabi people|Punjabi]]. Jennifer Gillis

Hello, I only added the link because Jennifer's sister Rachelle Gillis happens to be in that film. I previously created a page for the actress which was disrespectfully deleted. And also, when I noticed Wikipedia would not accept links from Just Jared Jr., I tried an alternate way of keeping the link on there because it was still aesthetically important to the film Pants On Fire. It's a shame nobody will even recognize Rachelle yet because the movie has been released and I'm sure she should be getting followers because she plays a major role. She already has an imdb profile; now where's her Wikipedia profile? Marino13 (talk) 18:33, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Sorry About That!! (The 305th Operations Group article, U.S. Air Force Captain Glen Edwards)

Hi, DPLbot,

I'm sorry about the mistake that I made concerning my intended "link" for Captain Glen Edwards in the article for the 305th Operations Group. I'm still pretty much a "rookie" at editing. But, I do try my best to learn things.

You just wrote to me... "Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 305th Operations Group, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Glen Edwards. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject." (Emphasis added by me.)

I have seen the word "disambiguation" in passing but did not fully understand it unless I got one of those "Did you mean...?" notices when I was searching for a particular military unit. So, today, I have learned that such notices will appear if my intended "link" is not specific enough. Had I seen that yesterday, I certainly would have pursued the matter.

With all the edits that I've made this past year, I suppose it's a "good thing" that you haven't had to write to me before, eh? By the way, when I have tried to enable a "link" but it's "wrong," I have indeed seen and learned what all the red letters mean. That is, "Try again, Rob!"

I could have sworn that, after I enabled the "link" for (U.S. Air Force Captain) Glenn Edwards, I did indeed check my own edit to insure that the "link" was working properly, just as I had done for the "link" that I had just enabled for "Edwards Air Force Base" in the same sentence. Hmmm. Apparently, after checking Edwards, I had a false sense of confidence and merely "threw-in" a couple of brackets for "Glen Edwards." Then, I signed-off, I reckon. Hmmm.

Hopefully, you will appreciate my concern and my willingness to learn and "make things right"...

What I just did was to look at the Edwards Air Force Base article (the "Overview" section) to see how THAT "link" was done. I now see that "more info" was included in THAT link (not just a couple of brackets around "Glen Edwards"). So, I just now went back to the article for the 305th Operations Group (the "Cold War" section) and "fixed" my previous edit for the "link" to (Captain) "Glen Edwards." I have checked it twice, and, it is indeed taking me to the intended article on Captain Edwards. (By the way, I also double-checked myself on the "link" for Edwards Air Force Base in the same sentence that I added yesterday. It's still working as intended. Yeah!)

Well, I'm sorry to have bothered you with my mistake. But, thanks for writing to me. I have learned something new today. And, I will try to insure, even more, that I double-check my intended edits, especially in terms of enabling "links." So far, I have been successful. But, the "disambiguation page" notice was a "new one" for me. Now, I know.  :-O

Take care, Rob

I'm going to revert the bot edit to George Walker. There is no better page for these links. See John Smith for another one which just has to be, cause there ain't no better way to do it. ;^) Is there any way to fix the bot so it will ignore common names? Trilobitealive (talk) 20:15, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

I seriously don't see what needs fixing. Trilobitealive (talk) 22:39, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
But you might want to fix the tool itself since clicking "FIX" sends the user to a nice page which says "We've moved! We're sorry, but the user-supported tool you have attempted to reach did not leave a forwarding URL where we could automatically redirect you." Trilobitealive (talk) 22:42, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
More specifically, you should read the subsection WP:D#HOWTODAB. But I'll save you the trouble and quote the key sentence here: "To link to a disambiguation page (rather than to a page whose topic is a specific meaning), link to the title that includes the text '(disambiguation)', even if that is a redirect—for example, link to the redirect America (disambiguation) rather than the target page at 'America'." If you link to George Walker (disambiguation), the bot won't count it as an incoming link. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:38, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Now if you could come up with a real fix for em-dashes and en-dashes ... ;^) Trilobitealive (talk) 23:56, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

JMA Disambiguation Notice

Thanks for reminding me. I was in a hurry when I came across the need for that article to me updated. I knew I was pointing to disambiguation links and intended to come back to fix them. I did go back and fix a couple of them but forgot about the two you caught. I'll go back and do that now. It's sure a challenge to figure out how to format and make sophisticated edits when you learn how to do it by trial-and-error like I do. :-) I do a lot of cutting and pasting from other articles that use formatting I want and then change the information to fit the article I am editing. (The biography box on the Dan Markel page is an example of that.) Thanks again. Modern Ha Sofer (talk) 11:14, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the standard disambiguation link notification referring to the Frankish link in the Quentovic article. I have restored the link, which now points to the intended specific article again. However, I have a slight concern and a question: Although I edited the Quentovic article at the relevant time, I am as sure as anyone can be that I did not make the offending edit to the Frankish link. Several edits to the article that I did not make are attributed to my user name in the same diff. Please see Talk:Quentovic (Mystery Edits) for details. No one else had access to my computer, no one else has access to my account, and the edits in question are not ones I was considering making. There seems to be a fault in the way edits are applied or attributed. Is there a known bug that could be addressed and if so, who can address it? I am interested in furthering the accuracy of the record generally, not in correcting the record for the particular edit in question (which is trivial in itself). Thank you. --Frans Fowler (talk) 11:59, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguate "we" → "this bot"

Hey, JaGa, thanks for writing this bot. It works really nicely, and dovetails well with Dab solver. I have one request, though: Currently, the text says "We noticed ..." which isn't quite right, because (1) "we" is plural, and it was noticed by only one bot (which is not a majesty), (2) it is ambiguous, since the recipient doesn't know who the others are that are included in the "we", and (3) it reminds of the "we" used by impersonal and often sinister organizations, when the individual is made to feel that he is alone against the group. I think if I were new to Wikipedia (which can be intimidating already), I'd feel uneasy about that. How about if you disambiguate it to "this bot"? That would be more exact and friendlier. — Sebastian 10:05, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

  • or even "I noticed...". Apart from that the bot works well, I corrected someones square brackets without checking and it linked to a disambiguation page. Probably the first bot message I've had that didn't annoy me, it was actually useful.Fork me (talk) 09:10, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I like "I", too; my work tools and programs I write for fun use it too. However, I've often seen new users not be aware that a message is written by a bot. If you use "I", please consider adding an introduction like "I'm a Wikipedia bot ...". — Sebastian 07:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Customize

DPL is very useful and I like it. Is there any way I can tell the bot to leave messages on a page other than the default talk page, on a sub-page? Like "User:Talk/DPL messages" for example. I'll watch this sub-page for notifications, but I won't have to worry about it cluttering my main talk page and manually deleting stuff. Or if it can have messages sent via Notifications. Maybe this could be configured by the existence of a page "User:/DPL" which contains custom cfg parameters. -- GreenC 18:23, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

feature request for linking in editor

due to disambig pages acting as if it were a unique reference so the editor tells you the page exists and thats all. this then becomes an error reported by this bot

I propose that the wonderful editor tool that tells us the page exists also show the page or at least flag the editor that the existing page is a disambig page. Ideally after showing the page one can click on links in the page that become the new suggested page... including redirect links and subheadings(which would generate the correct HEADING#subheading link to jump to the subheading)

this new feature of the editor would correct the only three problems i have found linking my edits.

  1. redirect links need to be avoided via hand editing after trying the link
  2. an article too large for my need has sub section that applies so direct jump is preferable
  3. and this bots specialty, a disambiguous page that needs to be avoided

please note that one cannot just display the new page in an iFrame because then the link to the correct page will be redirected and not available to click in order to change the new link to correct link.

this will be very user friendly because not only does the preview verify that the link going to be inserted into the edited text is the intended link. but if it isn't what the editor wanted then they can either abort adding a link or one click in the displayed page to get the intended link automatically inserted in the editor's link creating wizard --Qazwiz (talk) 14:00, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Last month Dan arndt deleted Rawan Nada Article of mine ,he mentioned that it has no recognition and importance, then i gave many web links about it,and he mentioned it all about Dinesh Subasinghe and his album Karuna Nadee, now i will present this link about its record,it was the most sold instrumental album in sri lanka, sri lanka is a country with a small population 20 miliion,so it wont be like a Hollywood production,i try my best to bring out the data of local artists to the world, valuable things are happening here,so why cant wikipedia support us to bring our data to the world,we have a historical heritage for 2500 years and still some important art work are happening, event after 30- years war

  • Rawan nada has been deleted ,but it was the first ever music album by the historical instrument known as Ravanahatha

Dan arndt saying it dosen't have any recognition or importance

  • Karuna Nadee is an album after decades based on an Oratorio.its very rare to find Album based an oratorio.

please do some fair response for my articles Rawan nada and Karuna Nadee. Regards Musiclanka

Other links i've given for Rawan Nada

These are links and references, also i have provided online links still doing purchasing and making easier for listeners.also local news papers search - Rawan nada. Rawana nada, Ravan nada. ravana nada. රාවණ නාද

Use of the Pipe Character in User Notifications

Hi, I recently received a notification about a disambiguation link I'd inadvertently created (thanks for that, by the way) and while cleaning up my talk page, my attempts to collapse your notification with the {{collapse}} template produced some interesting results. Your use of the pipe character in (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver) confuses the template, which interprets the pipe as the deliniation between two parameters instead of a literal | character. As I suspect the collapse template is not the only one that would break because of this markup quirk, I have a suggestion. You could replace the | with the sequence |, which would not be interpreted by templates still and produce a pipe in the final markup. So in your message  |  would become  | , with the end result being identical, yet more template friendly. Check my talk page for an example of this. Thanks. Disambiguation jungle

Hello DPL. Thank you for your tips which I shall follow up. I am a bit pressured working simultaneously on the English and French pages on the same subject. The reason is that the centenary celebrations are next month and it would be good to have a decent entry in both. I am however rather new to this game - since January - and of course make tons of unintended errors as I learn. Thank you for your understanding.--Po Kadzieli (talk) 11:16, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. • Hi! Thanks for informing me of my link errors. I haven't known about them and have already created better links. Greetings, The Count of Zielin

Hi - DPL bot is repeatedly adding the incoming links template here - the "incoming links" are phantom ones caused by server lag on a template edit (there are actually virtually no incoming links to the dab page). I'd rather not see an edit war with a bot (DPL bot has already added the template three times)! Grutness...wha? 00:38, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) I understand the frustration, but if Special:WhatLinksHere says there are incoming links, I don't know how any bot is supposed to know that they aren't real. Once the server job queue gets caught up, the bot will remove the template automatically, so there's no need to edit-war with it. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:14, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Merci beaucoup DPL bot. Bien cordialement.

Hello DPL bot, Could you delete the image of side 1 of EP published in the U.K. as it contains an error in the credits of the song entitled “Mon amie la rose”; it is not by J. Lacombe but about J. Lacome. I already corrected the article about it but the error present in this image can generate disputes. Some evidences of what I say: http://www13.atwiki.jp/hardy/m/pages/42.html?guid=on & http://accordeonduriche.canalblog.com/archives/2014/07/25/30306655.html

suggest wording tweak

Hi there,

Thanks for pointing out two accidental links to disambiguation pages that I've been involved in.

I have a suggestion about the wording of the message ("We noticed though that when you edited [article name/s], you added a link [or links] pointing to the disambiguation page...") that appears on Users' talk pages. Since the user may not have added, but merely edited the words around the link, they may then be confused when told that they've "added" a link. I suggest the wording be changed to something like "... your edit/s included a link [or links] pointing to the..."

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely, --TyrS 12:44, 31 July 2015 (UTC) slightly tweaked--TyrS 14:50, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Hamiltonian is crucial

Dear bot, thank you for your comments regarding "Disambiguation" and corresponding clarifying notes. However, there is a grave problem with the term "Hamiltonian". In quantum mechanics this is a noun fundamental for it! It doesn't require any clarification. In your listing for "Hamiltonian" it is listed only as an adjective, e.g., "Hamiltonian mechanics". You need to reconsider this point and introduce "Hamiltonian" as a noun. This is absolutely necessary. For using it as an adjective you might require using it with proper nouns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19B:200:D462:95C9:B08C:404F:7F0E (talk) 15:08, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Dabsolver broken

The dabsolver is returning a 404 error. - Letsbefiends (talk) 20:42, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

I am getting this too and something weird seems to be happening. In the diff, the link to the solver in the first bullet item gives 404 but the subsequent ones work. Yet when you look at thelinks for the first two items:
  1. http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py/Shalom_Catholic_College (returns 404)
  2. http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py/Apple_Tree_Creek_War_Memorial (works)

I cannot see what the difference might be that is causing the 404 error. Shalom Catholic College exists as an article just as Apple Tree Creek War Memorial does. The only thing I notice is that the Shalom Catholic College article has the links that need disambiguating inside a table, could this be causing some kind of parser error that returns the 404 code? Concerning "David González"

Thanks for your recent message. Since Spanish surnames are composed by two words, it is very common to see a complete name such as "David González". I thought that, perhaps, the best way to prevent people from confusion was the disambiguation page, because it is not easy to know the complete surnames (e.g.: David González García). In the disambiguation page people would be able to distinguish among the different "David González". Anyway, if you consider that it is better to change the link, I will do it with no delay. --Fiquei (talk) 10:11, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Only one person named David González is a member of this band, right? So, if we have an article about that one person, you should link to that article. If we do not have an article about that person, then you should remove the link. I do not see how it is any help to readers who are reading an article about a band to link them to a list of articles about a lot of people who were not in that band. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:12, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) OK, got it. Then, I do remove the link. --Fiquei (talk) 12:50, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Currently the DPL bot appears to simply insert the {{dablinks}} template, which has three links, each to static content concerning disambiguation. With a page like Coverage of Google Street View, this leaves editors with the chore (and likely duplication of effort) of combing through hundreds of links to find the >7 links that link to disambiguation pages. It would be great if the bot also linked to a dynamic list of remaining links to disambiguation pages. This would be similar to the "What links here" under tools, just for selected outlinks.

Alternatively, the bot could alter all links to disambiguation pages that it finds by adding, for example only, a superscript (Dis), so that the links were obvious and didn't have to be hunted down. (Should not be a lone D, as that has an accessibility meaning of a link to a text description of an image.) Perhaps the (Dis) would link to the article about how to resolve links to disambiguation pages.

Either of these methods would increase the likelihood and speed of links to disambiguation pages getting fixed and leave more time for editors to improve other content.

Disambiguation link notification for December 7 Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Robert Vahey, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Secret Army and Wycliffe. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles.

Hi DPL. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Yes, of course you're absolutely right. Obviously I didn't mean to 'link' to disambiguation pages :-) I had thought that the titles in question were both specific and obscure enough to link straight to the films and television programmes in which he appeared. Somewhat carelessly, I didn't check them out post edit. The titles in question should link directly to the tv progs, not the corresponding novels or anything else. Goes without saying that you're more than welcome to correct the links, otherwise I shall correct them when I return later - time is tight today, and I just can't 'edit' without a proper k/b. Any chance this bot could use /* ... */ in the edit summary when it creates a new section on a talk page? That would be a nice improvement. YBG (talk) 20:46, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

Generally when I link to a disambiguation page I don't do it inadvertently. Personally I like to see other meanings of terms before I go to a source. Also, I don't want to have to always make a decision that the reference I would choose is the correct one - in some cases that might not be transparently clear. And what if more than one source is relevant?. It seems to me better to have any kind of link (including red ones - which at a glance tell me where not to look) than none at all. So I'm sorry if my approach causes any kinds of problems. I don't mind the bot messages - I like to know what's happening. --lifeform (talk) 01:34, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Can the bot be trained to ignore hatnotes?

I received this notice about linking to a dab page. My link was an edit to Dickinson's Real Deal, where I added a hatnote:

"Real Deal" redirects here. For other uses, see The Real Deal.

Obviously, the link was deliberate. Although the bot says, "Such links are almost always unintended...," I think that such links in a hatnote are almost always intended. I'm clueless about how finely these bots can be tuned. Maybe tell it to ignore a dab link in any sentence beginning "For other uses, see..."? JamesMLane t c 14:55, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @JamesMLane: If the link is intentional, you should format it as suggested at WP:D#HOWTODAB; then, the bot won't bother you. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 19:59, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the reference, but the bot's notice wasn't much of a bother. Frankly, going through all that's suggested at the link you gave would be MORE bother than just ignoring the bot when the link was intentional! The bot has in the past called my attention to unintentional links, which I've then fixed, so I appreciate its work. I can easily tolerate the occasional false positive. I will try to watch out for links to disambiguation pages in future edits. Thank you for pointing this out to me. Jwicklatz (talk) 19:29, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

So is it less than 25 or more than 30? Debresser (talk) 09:43, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

False positive

I received this message saying I added a link to the disambiguation page Gaming to AFK (webseries) when I was editing it. Not only did I not add that link, but it was already present in the original revision as submitted by the author. Adam9007 (talk) 15:38, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Newlines

Can you please take care so when removing tags from the very top of a page the bot does not leave an empty line? E.g. I removed the empty line created by the bot in the previous edit. Thanks! -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:05, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks

The Barnstar of Diligence
Thank you for helping point out that I linked some of my created articles to disambiguation pages. PatrickPitso (talk) 09:22, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Appreciation

Thanks for your diligence. You caught my links to dab pages Phobos and Deimos - I had lazily assumed that the moons were the primary topic for those names, just like all the planets are. Hairy Dude (talk) 13:19, 23 January 2016 (UTC) Hairy Dude (talk) 13:19, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
