More on "cite" templates

[Sorry for replying here, but the original post has been archived...]

About the {{cite|...}} templates, again:

  • They only provide consistent formatting and correct identification of fields if they are used correctly. Again, it is much harder to do that than to format the reference by hand -- especially for infrequent editors, who cannot be expected to know what the innumerable variants and their fields are.
  • Indeed Wikipedia policy is that one should not make purely cosmetic or invisible edits to articles, like removing or adding cite templates. I try not to do that, and I hope that other editors do not do that either...
  • Wikiprojects have no "right" to define special style rules for the articles they may claim to "own". They may suggest styles and layouts that work best for their subject matter (like which sections to have, and in which order), but not for general things like reference formatting.
  • Conjectural existence of other tools for exporting of viewing references cannot be an argument for using {{cite|...}} templates. There is no reason to expect that the fields and uses of the latter will be adequate for such tools. Moreover, since cite templates are not mandatory, the utility of such tools would be quite limited anyway.
  • I have no hope of getting those templates (and navbars, infoboxes, article-side tags, Wikiprojectts, the AfD mechanism, ...) banished from Wikipedia. Not in the next decade, at least ;-). But maybe I can make other editors aware of their many disadvantages; so that, at least, they stop "improving" articles by turning perfectly good explicit refs into {{cite|...}} templates that are worse in every aspect.
  • And finally, sorry if I forgot to explain that specific change in the edit summary. But I posted the explanation here...

NOTAFORUM

What does this mean??? D Gums (talk) 08:27, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

If you click on the WP:NOTAFORUM link, you will reach one of the policy pages governing Wikipedia. In that section, which lists "do not use Wikipedia for any of the following:", item #4 is "bear in mind that article talk pages exist solely to discuss how to improve articles; they are not for general discussion about the subject of the article, nor are they a help desk for obtaining instructions or technical assistance. Material unsuitable for talk pages may be subject to removal per the talk page guidelines." The "Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines" link explicitly allows others to remove those types of comments ("It is common to simply delete gibberish, test edits, harmful or prohibited material as described above, and comments or discussion clearly about the article subject itself instead of its treatment in the article.") DMacks (talk) 08:32, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
All right I'll stop with all that, even though others have EW'ed as well. D Gums (talk) 08:38, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

@Doug Weller: no objection. I was in a charitable mood, despite obvious demonstrated evidence to the contrary by the editor, at the time. DMacks (talk) 19:00, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the catch & correction

I made a similar oops(!) at Strike Up the Band (song), which I have revisited and corrected. Pls advise if you see a problem still. I will revisit 76 Trombones to retrieve any (non-song titles) edits that are ok. Again, thank you.//Jbeans (talk) 03:44, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Roadside Attractions

Sorry DMacks, I am new to editing wiki articles and was furiously making fixes on the Roadside Attractions page, and failed to realize that you had fixed my changes THREE times on the Salem Cow segment. My Apologies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.74.3.161 (talk) 04:43, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

No worries. Thanks for making all the fixes you did! DMacks (talk) 06:10, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

"Researchers such as Ross M. Brown"

Add here[16] last June and here Oct. 2017. That was added from the same IP range as today.[17] Doug Weller talk 10:49, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

@Doug Weller: thanks for remembering/finding them. Years-long disruption from that IP (that specific one, not just range; not just that specific topic being added)...any thoughts about a long block? DMacks (talk) 14:02, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
I agree. Six months. Doug Weller talk 16:05, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Sulfoxide thing

If you want to talk more about the caption to the chiral drug, a tempest in a teapot, I would be glad to. I am just trying to minimize the number of adjectives that refer to chirality. It is not obvious initially but if a sulfoxide-containing compound is chiral, the RR'SO is the stereogenic center. But have it your way, those are my 2 cents. BTW, thank you for your help with the article. --Smokefoot (talk) 16:11, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

I definitely like the idea of scaling back the string of adjectives description in the caption. I just wanted to help focus on the article topic for those who don't know as well what they're looking at. It's not just chiral (so?) and a sulfoxide (ok, on topic), but the sulfoxide is the chiral detail (good example of this idea) and that's relevant to pharmacology and drug business. How about:
"Esomeprazole, a blockbuster drug, contains a chiral sulfoxide. It is the enantiopure drug component of the racemic omeprazole drug."
Or scrap the whole idea of the racemic variant and have more article content about the chirality (biochemical relevance, which leads to the racemic-then-enantiopure timeline). As other biochemical examples (and enantioselective synthesis), there is also alliin/allicin. DMacks (talk) 18:35, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Recent Edit to Influenza treatment page

DMACKS, As an academic, you should understand that a claim can only be disregarded if contrary proof is presented. Your labeling of my edits to the Influenza treatment page as "disruptive," is ill informed and will likely result in flu deaths. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Malekniazi (talkcontribs) 03:38, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Who is the best person to ask this question to? Feel free to ping other editors who can. Interstellarity (talk) 17:21, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
No idea about that either. I would think having a no-password account would get discovered and abused fairly quickly, and then banned/klines quickly thereafter. DMacks (talk) 17:48, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

+ 27 Social Innovators of South Africa

Hello - you just wrote me a message that the entry that I am currently working on is not appropriate. To clarify, + 27 Social Innovators of South Africa is a TV series that ran all across Africa and on CBS as well Africa Channel in the United States. There is nothing inappropriate about this project. I am happy to make edits if you want to suggest some. Currently working on the links and references. Thanks for your help in making this entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leonhard-Virgil (talkcontribs) 21:41, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Leonhard-Virgil. Please have a look at WP:TONE/WP:NPOV. Your article was written in an informal way, full of fluffy language, rather than an "encyclopedia article" with citations to sources independent of the subject itself. DMacks (talk) 02:23, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Bromocresol purple, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Equilibrium (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:10, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrators must secure their accounts

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Review page flags

Hello, as you placed the flags on Fardad_Fateri, I would like to find out if they can be removed. Since you placed those templates, you are in the best position to know whether or not the issues which caused their placement(s) have been corrected.

Thank you! Naadobea1776 (talk) 16:58, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

There are still uncited biographical claims and there is still the neutrality problem ("pursue his passion for changing student lives" is fluff, and another editor has also noted the overall advertising feel on the talkpage). I removed the notability tag. DMacks (talk) 17:05, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the time to re-assess. I will check for relevant wiki-projects to add the page to, in order to encourage more editors to examine and improve the page.Naadobea1776 (talk) 17:15, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

you said Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia but Instead of deleting what i wrote I would hope that you fixed it because it was a link of a show the artist has been on recently in 2019 that the fans would like to see — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maseman123 (talkcontribs) 14:54, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

But we're an encyclopedia, not a fan-site or facebook. See the guideline at WP:EL. You were posting a lot of links to a certain TV/Youtube channel but it has not WP article. That suggests it's not a major media outlet or reliable source. Do you have some affiliation with them? DMacks (talk) 18:20, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
