Hi Dear Viraj, regarding esports in india.

Hi dear viraj, hope you’re safe and doing good, I wanted to ask that why aren’t indian esports related articles covered on wikipedia? Like i have seen even small esports organisations from other countries are covered but not even a single esport organisation from india is covered on wikipedia. I have noticed that you’re a gamer as well, and also since my first article’s subject is related to esports, while researching i have got a lot of information and I’d like to ask if you can collaborate on the same, or if we could make a group of like minded people. Hums4r (Let's Talk) 05:45, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

@Hums4r: Hi. I think there are 2 main reasons why there aren't many Indian eSports article: (1) Low number of Indian Wikipedians who are interested in Gaming. (2) Low media coverage for Indian eSports, see WP:NOTABILITY. Sorry but I'm no longer interested in creating articles on English Wikipedia because I'm not a native speaker of English and I've faced some issues because of it. Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 14:06, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@CptViraj:, Thanks for the response, but i think what we can do is create stub article's and maybe someone in future will add more information to it. i have already started working on Stalwart Esports because as you said they don't get enough coverage but i have read some major articles on stalwart esports and i think it should work for stub. Please

Hi sir i have made a request on WP:CHUU on 19 January 2021 then 1997kB said, On hold until 30 January. Today is 5 February but still my name has not been renamed can you rename it for me please. Hyderabadi Wikipedian (talk) 06:27, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

@Hyderabadi Wikipedian: Hi. A bug has came in usurption process, see phab:T272770, therefore we cannot perform any usurptions before the bug gets resolved. -- CptViraj (talk) 07:12, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Question

Hello CptViraj, after I made the request for the usurpation of the username (Kamilalibhat), I began thinking about the data of the account, Kamilalibhat. Will that data including number of edits, etc. be transfered to this account or not? I asked 331dot but he said that he is not certain what will happen. Now, could you please verify what will happen next? –KamilAlee 16:46, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

@KamilAleeBhat: It won't be transferred to this account. "Kamilalibhat" account will be renamed to "Kamilalibhat (usurped)". -- CptViraj (talk) 17:19, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
CptViraj, is there any criteria to merge two accounts of same person? –KamilAli 17:47, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
I do know that it is not possible to merge accounts. The best that you can do is post a statement on your user page saying "Hi, I am Kamilalibhat, I previously used the account (old account name)". 331dot (talk) 17:59, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
Could anyone of you please decline my request for usurpation before it will be done by any global renamer?, 331dot. –KamilAli 19:24, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
@KamilAleeBhat: Done. -- CptViraj (talk) 01:38, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Hello Sir, Draft:Emiway Bantai (indian rapper) has been waiting for a review for several days. I did not want to request you but could not stop myself. I hope you will not disappoint me. Thanks Dada Rawan (talk) 11:04, 4 March 2021 (UTC)

@Dada Rawan: I was previously involved with the subject so I prefer someone else to review it. Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 00:57, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

@CptViraj, I do not understand what you want to say. Rajat Verma's main title is Protected by Administrators. And I have drafted it. The problem is that how can the reviewer move it? I have discussed this on Kammill's talk page. The administrator says that if any Indian reviewer reviews it, then I should unprotect it. Write your review by tagging admin on Kammill's Talk page. Thank you 223.189.179.225 (talk) 01:31, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

@CptViraj, I can't wait any longer. It will not take much time to review, as the draft is not so large. You can review. Please 223.238.219.129 (talk) 02:02, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
@Ohnoitsjamie: I just reviewed the draft, the subject seems to pass WP:NACTOR and the article is in NPOV. -- CptViraj (talk) 07:08, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. @IP: The draft has been published by Kammill. -- CptViraj (talk) 17:56, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
@CptViraj, Thanks for your support, but the article is not yet visible on the search engine. If the reviewer improves it, the link will probably be visible. 223.189.190.173 (talk) 01:03, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes, It needs to be reviewed by a NPR. I'm a NPR but I only use the right outside the article namespace, so someone else will have to review the article. -- CptViraj (talk) 01:13, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Tip of the Month

This tip is one of the many ways to combat spam on Wikipedia:

  • On Wikipedia, articles either meet the General Notability Guideline or not. When you come across a new article, it is extremely important to determine if it is a real article, or just a spam article. Start with a search on Google, for reliable sources, if you get none in return, then look at the article for non-NPOV content, also scan the references section in the article to see what sources it uses, and check the 'other languages' section and Wikidata to see if it is on other Wikipedias. If other Wikipedias have the same content and/or a CSD or AfD tag (WP:AFD) it is likely spam or not notable, so you can then nominate it for deletion to get input, remember that CSD criterion does not always apply to these articles depending on the content/contex. Also remember to check for copyright violations via earwig's

A tag has been placed on File:Darcy Rose Byrnes at the world premiere of Cinderella at the El Capitan Theatre Hollywood March 1 2015.jpg for "speedy deletion"

Hi, not sure what's wrong with the picture. Not sure why it's been tagged for speedy deletion. Does this refer to the picture on wikimedia commons that is referenced as her "profile picture" on her wikipedia page?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Darcy_Rose_Byrnes_at_the_world_premiere_of_Cinderella_at_the_El_Capitan_Theatre_Hollywood_March_1_2015.jpg

Or is this deletion in reference to a different file reference? I'm a bit new to all this. I couldn't find the "contest speedy deletion" button that was mentioned.

Is the file missing info? Is it a copyright question? (I took the photo and own the copyright.)

Thanks for your help. Wikiwikiq (talk) 10:41, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

@Wikiwikiq: Hi. The deletion was just for the local file description that you had created here on English Wikipedia and not for the Commons file. See WP:F2 for more info about the deletion criterion. Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 15:14, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

However, due to Tsugaru (User:つがる) being busy with exams, and having some problems logging into his Wikipedia account, the next Issue of TWW has been delayed. TheWikiWizard-June 2021

Hello, CptViraj! Here is the June 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

Wikipedia News

  • The IRC channels used for Wikipedia have changed, you can read more on it here. While TWW was aware of this in the last issue, we decided to wait and publish this in this issue, when the issue is not as new any more, and more information has been developed.
  • There was quick interruption in editing on Wikipedia, that was to test server switching should an emergency happen, more details can be found here.

Humour

This section was written by CanadianOtaku --つがる Talk to つがる:) 🍁
  • Internet Explorer still thinks freenode is the best IRC service!
  • It has been proven that editing the article Cheese while eating Cheese is considered a WP:COI.
  • This joke has been donated to us from aliens, hopefully they learned UTF-8: £

Editor's Notes

  • Thanks for your patience as we experienced delays in publishing this issue.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello CptViraj/Archives,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

We don't have much to report this month, but we do have the following...
  • The Simple English Wikipedia has almost reached 200,000 articles!
  • Wikipedia Asian Month which took place in November, has finished. Now, all the articles are judged and then it is determined who gets the postcards, even if you don't get one, or didn't participate, there is always next year, and we thank you for everything you have done!
  • Arbitration Committee Elections December 2021 took place earlier this month, for elegible editors. (At the time of this writing it was still taking place, but I assumed by the time this issue was sent, it would have been finished - It is set to finish at December 6 2021 at 23:59 UTC )

Editor's Notes

  • I haven't forgotten about TWW ;) Don't worry.
  • TWW is in the process of getting a new main page, if you have any ideas, or would like to help, please shoot a message on the TWW talk page.

Bots Newsletter, December 2021

Bots Newsletter, December 2021
BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, Green checkmarkY 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful (Dark red X symbolN2 3 denied, Blue question mark? 3 withdrawn, and Expired 2 expired).

September 2019

Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
  • Green checkmarkY Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 · Dark red X symbolN2 DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 · Blue question mark? DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

October 2019

November 2019

Now you're thinking with portals.

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

Signing off... jp×g 04:29, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
