Sam Cooke
Your protection of Sam Cooke was reverted by a bot. Tapered (talk) 04:29, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- The protection itself just expired, the protection template was what was removed by the bot. The bot doesn't have admin powers and can neither protect or revert protection on a page. Courcelles (talk) 04:30, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks! Have some pasta. Tapered (talk) 23:46, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- And thanks for the protection. Tapered (talk) 00:58, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Page protection
Might be a good idea to lock the World News Today and BBC News at Ten pages. -KH-1 (talk) 06:44, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Done. Courcelles (talk) 06:45, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
Spelling Bee
You've protected the 91st National Spelling Bee page. You said it was a violation of the privacy living persons, but each and every one of these people have signed a press release form, which makes this legal according to wikipedia laws.
- Not true, it may be legal to publish the names in terms of real law, but it is absolutely against Wikipedia's WP:BLP policy. Courcelles (talk) 19:13, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
It is neutral, so do you mean that I need to provide a source?
- No source will be good enough. You are not going to publish a long list of non-notable children's names on this website, full stop, end of discussion. Courcelles (talk) 19:21, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Who are you to say they're not notable? Wikipedia's laws say that it only has to be one event. You just have to speak of them in an unbiased way. It is just a list of names, so get over it. Erfson (talk) 23:50, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- WP:NSPORTS They're not notable. Courcelles (talk) 23:55, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
They are notable, it says there must be reliable secondary sources about the person(s), which there are. Second of all, http://ghosttrick.wikia.com/wiki/Ghost_Trick_Wiki:Protected_page says "Do not protect a page you are involved in an edit dispute over. Admin powers are not editor privileges - admins should only act as servants to the user community at large." Also, someone clearly hasn't read the five pillars of Wiki.
- First, I'm not involved. 2) This is Wikipedia, please look at our own protection policy. And you seem to be missing WP:BLPNAME, which is policy here. Courcelles (talk) 14:11, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
I made this list back when I was still very new to Wikipedia, and sources were alien to me, but now I know how to use them, but when this expires in two months, I'll come back, but I promise it will be with the proper sources. Erfson (talk) 18:08, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
Abiodun Williams
Thanks for protecting Abiodun Williams. Any reason you didn't restore the deleted, sourced information that was removed by the anon IP? Best, Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 03:16, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- I never revert when protecting unless absolutely necessary; I just protected the version I happened to find. Courcelles (talk) 13:12, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Gotcha, thanks for the answer. Best, Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 17:00, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not very good at using wikipedia, so apologies if I am doing this incorrectly. Would it not be better to restore the version of the page including the section discussing the failure of The Hague Institute? As others have pointed out, it is well-sourced. There seems to be a concerted effort from Tufts University (or even Abiodun Williams) to bury this controversy but it has been a scandal that has been the subject of several newspaper articles, as well as being debated in the Dutch parliament. It would be odd to omit it entirely from the Abiodun Williams wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justice Expert (talk • contribs) 21:04, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

- Someone wishing to re-add negative BLP information needs to go through and evaluate that all sources are reliable, that the sources used reflect a consensus of the sources available, and that all the information is in line with those sources. Quite frankly, I don't have time myself, but will drop the protection to semi if someone vows to do that before reverting. Courcelles (talk) 16:49, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- I work for a media analysis firm and I'm a native Dutch speaker, all info is correctly cited and come from credible sources (Institutional Dutch media and official documents of the Dutch Parliament). Anon seems to have differences with the media who published the articles, if that's the case he needs to settle that with the media not here. As long as anon user from Tufts doesn't win a court case for libel against these media and politicians, we can presume that the information is correct and shouldn't be removed. Best regards,Stadswacht1 (talk) 12:58, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

DYK for List of 1968 Winter Olympics medal winners
On 3 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article List of 1968 Winter Olympics medal winners, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/List of 1968 Winter Olympics medal winners. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, List of 1968 Winter Olympics medal winners), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hey, thank you for protecting Group Animal. I think I forgot to thank you for passing The High Road to China last month, so thank you for that. Also, do you think we should finish User:Courcelles/List of accolades received by Far from Heaven this year? I believe it just needs a lead. - JuneGloom07 Talk 17:07, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

SmileDirectClub
Hello! Can you help me understand why the SmileDirectClub page was deleted last night? When I looked yesterday, there were 2 votes to delete and 4 to keep the page. Why did the delete votes win? The page was originally flagged because a user affiliated with Smile Direct Club made updates to the page, which is apparently against policy. Can you explain what the preferred policy is for making factual updates to a page? As far as I understand, the user only updated out-of-date information, including old prices. To me, it seems like making those factual updates is more in keeping with Wikipedia's policies than removing the page altogether. Now it's no help to anyone! Really looking forward to learning more about the rationale for this and the appropriate way to correct factual inaccuracies. 173.128.144.63 (talk) 15:00, 24 April 2018 (UTC) Thank you!
- AFD isn't a vote, so you can't just count heads and close a discussion. (If we are counting snouts, it was 3-4; the nominator counts as a vote for deletion; not 2-4) It is a battle of ideas, a debate on policy. One side had a policy leg to stand on, the other did not. Namely that WP:CORP was not satisfied by the article in question. The keep side argued that some promotional content had been removed, not refuting the central point of the nomination. Courcelles (talk) 16:09, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, thank you for explaining that. Can you tell me more about the process for making factual updates to existing content? If a person affiliated with the subject of the article isn't allowed to make updates personally, how are factual changes supposed to be made per Wikipedia policy? Obviously, another person can be tapped in to act on behalf of the organization, but that's not exactly kosher. Is there a way Smile Direct Club could have reached out to update factual inaccuracies by the book? Thanks again.
- Sure, there's a whole Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Courcelles (talk) 16:32, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, very helpful. Would you consider re-instating the Smile Direct Club page as it was before the editor with the COI made changes, with the promise that the organization will follow the correct editing procedures moving forward?
- That doesn't solve the issues of notability, though. Courcelles (talk) 14:12, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [1]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [2]
Changes later this week
- The advanced search function beta feature will be on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. [3]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 May. It will be on all wikis from 10 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 8 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 9 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 16 May. Other wikis will switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [4][5]

GA Comments
My comments were not meant as a knock against you. You've done more recently and historically than I have (or likely will do) and yes even in the most distorted accounting you've been a net positive to GAR. I perhaps shouldn't have noted anyone as an example for that argument. I do so given that there was discussion on the talk page already about the short noms felt it could help illustrate a point about any individual nomination and the collective effect. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:19, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- And I might have overreacted some, but it did feel like personal criticism -- I've been very deliberate to review more than I submit in this recent phase of my writing energy. Personally, I'd love a QPQ system where someone had to review one once they had five GA's to their name or something, or even a "5 nominations at a time" limit. But, yeah, it's always best to talk in generalities, not call out one set of articles as the problem. As to the length aspect, well, they're also fairly trivial to review. You could review any of them in ten minutes work, whereas it often takes me an hour or more to do a longer article properly. (Maybe I'm slow? Who knows?) Anyways, I'm rambling, Barkeep49, but sorry for getting a little defensive. Courcelles (talk) 22:26, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- And I am equally sorry for the personal example when the general would have sufficed. 22:29, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
Project AMAD
Sourced information from the IAEA, the Gaurdian as well as literature was removed on the Project Amad article, and then a ARBPIA3 (the article has nothing to do with the Israel-Palestine conflict) was put on the article unjustly in order to not have the previously removed information restored to the page.
RedSparrow1 (talk) 14:16, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
- ARBPIA3 covers the entire Arab-Israeli conflict, not just the Palestinians in particular, despite the slightly misleading acronym. Courcelles (talk) 14:58, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
- I think RedSparrow1 meant that Project Amad had nothing to do with Arab-Israeli conflict. Iran is clearly not an Arab country as you know. --Mhhossein talk 18:53, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
- Not Arab, but clearly within the broadly-construed language, I think. Someone would have to ask ArbCom for a current interpretation, which may differ than what I meant when I voted for it, which was that Iran would be part of it. Courcelles (talk) 19:00, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
- I think RedSparrow1 meant that Project Amad had nothing to do with Arab-Israeli conflict. Iran is clearly not an Arab country as you know. --Mhhossein talk 18:53, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Iran is not part of the Arab world I see no reason for *ARBPIA3. RedSparrow1 (talk) 11:13, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
Pelé
Brazilian soccer player Pelé’s article are protected. I suggest include after his name the KBE order title that he owns. It should be like that: “Edson Arantes do Nascimento, KBE ...” Pietovte (talk) 04:42, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- (The place to suggest this is on the talk page, not here. Courcelles (talk) 13:12, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
Block question
My account shows that I am NOT blocked from editing at Wiki.
When I attempted to add a section at The Salvation Hunters, a pop-up says I am blocked. But I could, nevertheless, make small edits, such as changing font in other parts of the article!
Can you shed some light on this? CerroFerro (talk) 18:14, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- I've got no clue. I wonder if you were using a highly dynamic IP and settled on one temporarily that was blocked. Because if you made edits, you aren't blocks, rather the edit rewrites an entire article or adds a single space, the blocking mechanism doesn't care... Courcelles (talk) 19:13, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Help with my blocking case
Hi there.
you've received this message as you are the most recently online Checkuser that I've found.
I'm user 459PHJ3502 [6]. My account got blocked by Bbb23 for editing Dawenkou culture, adding a comment in the Talkpage, and removing the code by a previously blocked user as I found it's not appropriate to cross a user's opinion even if this user has been blocked.
The blocking of my account was performed by Bbb23 without notification.
When I brought my case to Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents to review, user Bbb23 came and reverted my request for block review without explanation [7], [8], [9]. It's like I've been forced to shut up by this user. Even after being asked for an explanation in my summary at Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents, user Bbb23 still reverted my request for block review section without giving an explanation.. There is something unusual about user Bbb23.
Please help me with the block review of my case in Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. 58.224.26.190 (talk) 17:50, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

GA project
Hey there. I figured I would invite you, if you are interested, to work on Oceania at the Olympics articles with myself and Cameron11598. I recently finished Tuvalu with DatGuy, Cam is finishing up Marshall Islands, and we are now working on Guam at the Olympics (and Kiribati). I made a list on my user page of most of the Oceania articles, still need to add Australia and some other big hitters. I have done a couple of non-Oceania topics as well. If you are interested in collaborating on any articles, for WikiCup or otherwise, let me know. Thanks! Kees08 (Talk) 19:29, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'd love to help make some GT's; sounds like great fun rather than just doing nations randomly. Courcelles (talk) 19:37, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

cultgroup --Cameron11598 (Talk) 03:25, 4 May 2018 (UTC)- Awesome! I would recommend either starting at the beginning of Guam and moving forward until we meet, or starting on whichever topic you want. If you want, I can try to do half of the topic. where did cameron even come from... Kees08 (Talk) 05:14, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- If you are interested, here is a list of the smaller countries' participation at Winter Olympics (I have never written a Winter Games article before, seems like you like them?)
- If you want to do something else, then that's cool too. Thanks! Kees08 (Talk) 19:48, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Great, I need to focus on this. I'll try and knock out the two Tonga Winter articles this weekend. American Samoa might take a little longer, the oldest I've done any of these so far is 2006. Courcelles (talk) 19:52, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Awesome! I clipped some sources for you, there are plenty more. If you do not have a free Newspapers.com subscription through Wikipedia, you should get one, in case there are not many sources on the internet. Kees08 (Talk) 20:25, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Kees08:, I finished writing the American Samoa article, but I'm not sure I'm citing the newspapers.com clippings correctly? Courcelles (talk) 00:06, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Just those couple of things, I add location sometimes too. Kees08 (Talk) 01:38, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks! I ususally don't cite location unless the name of the paper doesn't include it, or the location is obscure. Now... just to wait for a willing GA reviewer for the article! Courcelles (talk) 01:40, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Need to question about use of Talk Pages
Hi, it's me again. I just was checking out Wikipedia today, when I found that someone made mention of me on four separate articles, regarding my editing on them - each was on a novel by Agatha Christie, and the mentions were by Prairieplant. I'm not sure why they didn't think to send me a message regarding them, which I would have naturally sent a response to, but I don't know if what they did conforms to policy and guidelines about talk pages. I found that when they noticed my edits again, they make mention of it, and believe that what is there is what I want to have stand - this is not the case.
All I did was redo the plot summaries to trim down details, and length - if anyone wants to work on them further to make them conform to Wikipedia's guidelines on novels, I won't have any objection to that. The other thing I find concerning about the mentions on these talk pages, is whether they appear to be a personal attack on me - to get mentioned four times on the same thing, is slightly unnerving. I don't want to respond to all four, because if they had an issue, why didn't they talk to me on my Talk Page, not these articles?
The talk pages I have mentions on are Talk:Cards on the Table, Talk:Cat Among the Pigeons, Talk:Evil Under the Sun, and Talk:After the Funeral. Could you check these out and let me know what you think? And in terms of the subject behind their mentions, would you also check these four articles, and give me an honest, reasonable and fair review of what I did? I would much appreciate and respect your input. Please let me know when you can. Thanks GUtt01 (talk) 07:06, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- It looks like Prairieplant pinged you each time, so you should have received notification of the mention; not on your talk page as you might be used to, but on the little counter next to your username on the top of every page. (If for some reason you have these turned off, go turn them back on right away, they've become critical to operating on Wikipedia!). As to the actual conduct, that's going to take longer to look into, give me a while. Courcelles (talk) 13:06, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah, I did notice the notifications of the mention, but was surprised that they were spread across four separate talk pages. GUtt01 (talk) 13:30, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- That's a little unusual. Would have been better operationally to centralize discussion on one page, or a WikiProject page, and just notify the other pages. Four separate discussions is unwieldy. Courcelles (talk) 15:55, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- Indeed. I would have preferred them to do that, or send me a message. Besides, I was trying to do my bit to make the plot summaries be reduced in length and detail. If he thinks there's an issue, surely he could have seen what others think, and naturally I would not further editing, revisions and so forth to any of my edits. GUtt01 (talk) 16:18, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [13][14]
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [15]
- Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [16]
- Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [17]
- There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [18]
Problems
- Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [19]
Changes later this week
- There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [20]
- A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [21]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [22]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles. [23]
- A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development. [24]
- Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [25][26]

Your GA nomination of Cayman Islands at the 2010 Winter Olympics
The article Cayman Islands at the 2010 Winter Olympics you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Cayman Islands at the 2010 Winter Olympics for things which need to be addressed. Hey,
Thank you for protecting this page! Would you consider doing longer protection than 2 months as it seems to have just finished a 12 month protection and the disruptive vandalism started back up? (I know I stated 4 months in my original request but...apparently I didn't read the years from the protection log).
Thanks! -- Dane talk 22:18, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Done, for three years. Courcelles (talk) 22:22, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
Question
Since I see that you blocked Trestimesalady because that user is a sock evader of Smallmouthbassboost and Overthebarrel. There is now a user name "Knowthewaytojose" who has the similar editing patterns as those accounts. Is this possible that the user is evading a block? Raritydash (talk) 02:05, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Good eye. Confirmed as a sock and blocked. Courcelles (talk) 02:09, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, also what I'm concerned about is that those account that I listed above, I believe that they are a sock puppet of User:Wikidawg11; the master account who has done the same thing 3 years ago. Do you believe that those accounts belong to that master? Raritydash (talk) 02:13, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Who knows, and with a master that old who's already blocked and made 30 edits, I don't really care enough to spend time investigating. Courcelles (talk) 19:07, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
- Then, I'll just assume that it's "Smallmouthbassboost". Raritydash (talk) 22:36, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2018).

- Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
- Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
- A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.
- In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
