Hi, Carol. I understand that you removed DHeyward's comment on BlueSalix's page on 29 August in the hope that discussion would die down if people stopped commenting. I had previously removed a response of my own to some of BlueSalix's lies (or, alternately, to some of BlueSalix's memory issues) in the same hope. But it hasn't died down, has it? BlueSalix is still performing his it's-all-somebody-else's-fault dance, and people are still posting comments. One person has posted many times in defence of BS and has praised the "maturity" of his stance. And you yourself, if you don't mind my saying so, certainly haven't stopped posting on the page. In the light of this, in hindsight, your removal of DHeyward's critical comment — the only comment he has made on the page — looks less helpful, and hardly fair. Please restore it. (Unless you're planning to remove a lot more by other people? The current state of the page is upsetting Cwobeel, and no wonder.) My viewpoint is that there are a number of people criticizing BlueSalix - bringing up past issues at inopportune times and then blaming for responding defensively (albeit not productively). If it's to generate defensiveness, engage in "right-fighting", and push him/her away - that's working for sure. Re style and words

When you gave me the pointers at John Bauer (illustrator) about style and what words to use, something finally clicked in my brain and I came up with this trick for better edits. I'll just mention it to you since it might be useful for other newbies you adopt or mentor. To scan the text for "bad bits" I read it out loud, envisioning myself as a news presenter at the BBC reading the five o'clock news. This really marks the wrong words or sentences with neon signs. Are you saying that you checked the sources and there's nothing in the sources about this? No, the information about the sisters and brothers doesn't have to go in the article... but it's not unusual to have family biographical information that would include such a cursory discussion. Since we've got to get a good source for the will first, it may be a moot point. Regarding Clara - do you have a reliable source that says that her maiden name is Breese? Comments about Creole connection and siblings:

1. I am not sure what you mean about no evidence of the "Creole connection" - and the Oxford University preview of the biography article shows the discussion of the Creole connection. There are reliable secondary sources for this information.
2. No, the information about the sisters and brothers doesn't have to go in the article... but it's not unusual to have family biographical information that would include such a cursory discussion.
3. Regarding Clara - with the source, it's possible that her maiden name could be inferred, but that would be skimming into original research territory. It's better to just use the data that comes from the source. Unless, do you have a reliable source that says her maiden name is Breese? Stike-out, I was wrong the source does mention the two Breese women in relation to the will of their father. Further, I found that Clara married Frederick Salmon in 1830. Her mother and sister and John Hays were witnesses.
4. Just for discussion purposes: If the Breese sisters and Matilda share the same mother (which is the way it sounded in the will), aren't they half-sisters?

A GA challenge

If you're looking for an interesting article to review, keep an eye out for Livermorium. Double sharp will probably nominate it in a few days. I'm not a physicist (though I did play one for the navy lol), so articles like that are tough because I have to re-familiarize myself with the lay of the land before making comments. However a different perspective (especially one from someone using the article for the purposes of learning more about the discovery of super-heavy elements) is often really valuable to the authors. Sometimes it's nice to play Watson to someone's Sherlock and note (without shame) that thing XYZ is not as obvious at it appears to them. Protonk (talk) 13:51, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

You're right it would definitely be a challenge. And, I love the Watson in the BBC series, so I'm with you there. This particular topic is so far over my head, though, that it might be best to have someone else do the review. If there's an article about a dead person with an unusual pollen on the soles of her shoes, indication of blood settling in a pattern inconsistent with the way the body was found, etc... I'm your reviewer. :)

I'm more comfortable with biographies and art, and just dabble in architecture - like Beechwood (Vanderlip mansion) - because I've familiar with the Hudson Valley area and mansions.

Adoption?

Hello Carole,

I'm hoping you might want to adopt a new user, who is also interested in the arts. I've just started here, but enjoy applying my research skills and eclectic interests to a larger knowledge. As a friend recently pointed out, Wikipedia might be a better place for my "know-it-all" attitude (than our conversations, I presume).

I wanted to add some of my knowledge about modern Chicano art, and started with a draft. So some of my questions would be very basic:

1) Can i have more than one draft in my sandbox? 2) Can I upload an image of a painting if it's used as a book cover in a currently available publication? Or can I use a book cover under free use, as an art image, to depict an artist's work.

Regarding uploading images of paintings, if it's made in the United States before 1923 then it's in the public domain. If it was made after that date, then yes, it's subject to Fair use guidelines, which means it would have to be loaded into Wikipedia (not commons), have a fair use rationale, and be subject to fair use stipulations.

I think your thoughts on the FAC page itself would be very helpful. If (and don't take this as a push to "vote" one way or another) you've made an effort to look the article over and haven't found anything actionable, then that's an important data point for the FAC people to know when deciding whether or not to promote an article.

The tense issue is (AFAIK) a matter of habit in articles like this (on and off wikipedia) when discussing published exchanges or comments. Meaning if we note a comment made in a book or article it's common to use the present tense as the work is extant, although any comment in a published work is trivially in the past no matter how recent. :) Protonk (talk) 18:06, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm a little confused about why this is nominated again... and the nomination pages states that the issue is with the sources. The article is well-sourced, with national and local sources, and contributors have been continuing to add content over the past months. Please feel to respond there, but I'm a little confused for the reason for the nomination - and what is new about this situation that might result in a different resolution.

What do you think of my edits so far? I got rid of all the blogs and if desired I can begin doing print sources, though i link to a print news aggregator at the beginning of the article, newslibrary, that has the beginning, date, and publication name of many articles that only come out in print. Yeah there were certain issues regarding certain copyright problems and others. But As you want to know as to why I would like to Edit Wikipedia articles is because I want to expand the information on Wikipedia, Edit the pages on Wikipedia on Indian Television, Actors & Actress on Indian television and the Production houses. Your IP address could be blocked it is a shared IP, like in a university, etc. - and someone else was making unconstructive edits. If you've just started and haven't been making edits, I don't know.

We could set up a work page, like User:Bogenf/Alexander Bogen work page or User:Bogenf/work page, and then communicate there regarding next steps, etc. How does that sound?

I don't know anything about how to get your google search sidebar back. If it was me, I would google - words something like: return google sidebar... or check "options" or a similar menu item from your internet browser.

GA Cup -Round 1 Newsletter

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1 As we move into the middle of Round 1, we wanted to report some of the lessons we've learned thus far, as well as announce a major rule change going into Round 2, which begins November 1. Remember, sign-ups for this year's Cup ends on September 15. Thus far, we're very happy with the results of the competition. One of our major goals, reducing the long backlog at GAN, is well on the way to being accomplished, mostly due to the enthusiastic efforts of Jonas Vinther, who has earned over 250 points. Over 80 reviews have been made thus far. Thank you all for your efforts and for your part in making the GA Cup a success. However, this is the inaugural year of the GA Cup, so there have been some unforeseen circumstances that have come up. One has been a glaring inadequacy with the rules, which the judges feel makes the competition unfair. As a result, there will be a major change in the rules, starting at the beginning of Round 2: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. What this means is that you must provide some feedback to the article's nominator, and must wait for him or her to respond before passing the article. If the nominator has not responded in the standard 7 days, you can fail the article. We're instituting this rule change to prevent the possibility of competitors passing articles for the sake of passing articles (or failing them) and to gain more points. We believe that the change will make it more fair to all competitors in the GA Cup. Also, in case you haven't noticed, we increased the "guarantee" for Round 2 to 25 participants. The exact number will be decided in the near future. We thank your for your participation, and for your flexibility and understanding as we learn what works and what doesn't work in this competition. It's on the order of hours per week. The drafts should be up in sandboxes by the 29th and are due to be moved to the mainspace on november 12th--so mostly in that week and a half period. There are a fair number of students but the prof is shooting for relatively short articles. You're not obligated to review all of them, of course. :) If this sounds interesting to you please fill out an application here and mention I sent you. next steps

I would recommend you take a look at the online training. It's a good baseline for even experienced editors to see what the program expects as a baseline. Once you've done that I should have heard back from the professor and someone should have given you the online ambassador user right. Then you can just sign up on the course page. Images in Lucy May Stanton

Hi Carole. Great work on expanding the article. Just a note about the images in that article. I reverted your changes to the licensing of File:Lucy May Stanton.jpg. Date of creation of an image is not the same as date of publication. There's no proof of publication before 1923 (at least none that I could find before I uploaded it). The photographer is uncredited. Hence his/her date of death is unknown. Thus at the earliest, it becomes public domain in 2020. However, the image was definitely published in 2002, and if no earlier publication can be found, nor the death date of the author, it is still in copyright until 2047. Since it's uploaded under fair use, it will soon be deleted because it is no longer used in the article. For more information see Commons:Hirtle chart.

The reason I hadn't originally uploaded and used her self-portrait (File:Lucy May Stanton, Self-portrait, 1912, National Portrait Gallery.jpg) is that once again, there is no evidence that it was published (as opposed to created) prior to 1923. It was definitely published in 1975 (with a copyright notice) in Lucy M. Stanton - Artist by Forbes, W. Stanton (published by Emory University). Given that she died in 1931, the earliest the painting would come into the public domain is 2026. You may find that the self-portrait will eventually be deleted from Commons. If it is, you can re-upload it to English Wikipedia under fair use. It will have to be in a much smaller resolution and you'll need to write a fair use rationale for it. Criteria for GA

I'm not sure what the criteria are for GA, but looking at a couple you passed, they must be pretty low. Just recently, Maribojoc Church. Apart from the excessive WP:OVERLINKing and the dodgy grammar, my main surprise is that the article relies almost exclusively on just two sources - some sort of textbook
Jose, Regalado Trota (2001). Visita Iglesia Bohol (A Guide to Historic Churches). Manila: National Commission for Culture and the Arts. ISBN 9718140166.
and the website of the LGU. If you'd looked at this site you would see that it too relies heavily on Jose. Further, there is one section, which I just tagged {{cn}}, which apparently quotes a 1749 work in support of an 1878 building.

Another work you passed GA, in fact connected to this and by the same author, shares all the same faults – Punta Cruz Watchtower. In particular it includes the phrase "perfect isosceles triangle" without any explanation of what that may be. In fact the phrase was lifted from the LGU web site but attributable to Jose. That doesn't tell me what it is, nor does the wikipage Isosceles triangle. It seems to me you're too ready to heap praise where it isn't entirely due. GA Cup - Round 2

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 2 Greetings, GA Cup competitors! Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Jaguar took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 238. In a tight race for second, Peacemaker67 and Ritchie333 finished second and third with 152 and 141 points, respectively. Two users have scored the maximum five bonus points for article length (60,000 characters+). Anotherclown reviewed Spanish conquest of Yucatán (77,350 characters) and MrWooHoo reviewed Communist Party of China (76,740 characters). The longest review was by Bilorv who reviewed Caldas da Rainha. The review was approximately 22,400 characters which earned s/he two bonus points (20, 000 - 29, 999 characters). In Round 1, 117 reviews were completed, making the first round of the GA Cup a success! A total of 86 articles were removed from the backlog during the month of October! We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible. To qualify for the second round, one completed review was needed, which 28 users accomplished. Participants have been randomly put into 7 pools of 4; the top 2 in each pool will move onto Round 3. There will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 15th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on November 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here Also, remember that a major rule change will go into affect starting on November 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 displayed a weakness in the rules, which we are correcting with this new rule. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. The judges will strictly enforce this new rule. Good luck and remember to have fun! Example article for tone/etc.

We've got the rubric from the professor for basic structure but I was wondering if you had a good example in mind from the articles you've improved for a short and straightforward biography of a living articles (or maybe more than one example). I'd like to be able to point students to an article in the topic area which is good but not good (so it doesn't appear too daunting). @Adam (Wiki Ed): When I've provided examples, I often try to find them by for the decade or pre-20th century and occupation. I've used Dorothe Engelbretsdotter, William Orcutt Cushing for hymn-writers; Anne Moncure Crane as an example of tone for a writer (although it is a longer article); Anita Berrizbeitia for a landscape architect... I only provide examples if there's an issue with tone, content, or formatting, but I should go back through some recent reviews - there's one in particular that would benefit by an example.

Hi Carole! From what I've seen from our brief editing intersections, you are a smart, observant, patient and rational editor. For your info, this. I didn't mention my suspicions sooner because I didn't want to pollute your impressions, and you were doing a good job on the article. But, I did suspect this editor of questionable practices from the beginning, and his irrational bombastic responses to my "hey, can we better establish the subject's notability better?" questions suggested to my experienced eye that there was a problem. Thank you for improving the article. Not exactly sure what should be done. Technically, if he was blocked as a sock of an indeffed user, we could nom the article per G5 criteria of WP:CSD. I'm interested in your thoughts. Also, as I sift through some of the other info related to this editor, I regret not mentioning the SPI report sooner, as I just discovered that you brought him to Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard, and I might've pitched in there. Ah, just figured it out, I just saw that the two subcategories fall under Category:People by city or town in the Northwest Territories.

If you think that there are more than a few people that would fall into the Category:People from the Inuvik Region (i.e., there's not a city/town specific category for people living in the Inuvik Region), then I personally don't see an issue with having a category for people in the Inuvik Region that would be linked to People in the Northwest Territories.

But, if there's not likely to be more than just a couple of people, then creating that category becomes an excessive use of categories/subcategories. Does that make sense?--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Kristine, I saw that on your talk page. Based on those comments alone + considering it doesn't seem that there would be a flood of articles that would fall into the category, and the "people from" is already being managed under the cities and towns category - it doesn't seem at all prudent to create the categories.

I get that's been your interest for awhile to create categories - and I think I've asked before what about it captivates your interest? Why do you feel it's important to do? I feel interested in the north and the arctic since I am Canadian. I feel the regions of the Northwest territories apply since Wikipedia does the same for categorizing people from Nunavut regions. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello CaroleHenson. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Hi Carole, re your enquiry. Did you notice the rephrasing? If Ive missed something then can you fix it? I'm not happy seeing copyvios on wp. I prefer to hide, remove or fix. In this case I suspect in may have come from the dnb and not the odnb so it it maybe only poor practise rather than a copyright violation. I am a bit concerned that the authors think that their work is done as they seem to give up after it moves to main space. Hi Victuallers, Yep, I was checking the oxford link which is also the citation - I went ahead and made some additional edits for portions that looked to be copied from Oxford. So, that article looks better now.

You have such a good point about the activity by students settling way down since the articles were moved from the user's sandboxes to article space - and that these issues should be resolved one way or another!

Adam (Wiki Ed) and Victuallers, do you have a take as to what should be done with articles that have copyright violation / close paraphrasing issues (e.g., remove the copyright violations, reword the articles with violations). I think that if the stuff is from a web site that has a legitimate copyright claim (ie not usually dnb or npg, but all odnb stuff (that is not in the dnb)) then we need to fix or remove immediately. This is a crime that the student may be unaware of but we can see the mistake and I dont believe we can justify the republication of other peoples stuff to improve the learning of one student. VictuallersI got lost a bit in the acronym sentence. But I get the point about removing copyrighted content. I am pretty sure that I checked that everything that was tagged as CP / copyright vio was an issue based upon date of publication and copyright tags on the pages. If there are nuances, though, that I'm missing (i.e., something looks like it's still under copyright, but isn't), please let me know.

DNB = Dictionary of National Biography (out of copyright), ODNB = Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (updated version of DNB and copyright) The articles here are also using the Oxford Ref which is also copyright and a cut down version of ODNB. NPG = National Portrait Gallery in London - Some copyright but lots that are out of copyright but they claim that taking a picture means that its a new piece of copyright... ummm no. Annie Swynnerton

Hi, great work expanding the Swynnerton article but I think you'll find that the ONDB reference to her place of birth as Hulme was correct. I know you have referenced Kersal, but the book appears to be wrong. I have Wikipedia Library access to Findmypast and looked to check which was right. There is only one Annie Louisa Robinson born in 1884 and that was in Chorlton which includes Hulme. I don't know if you have access but you can check here. Hope you don't mind. Hi J3Mrs, This is my first experience with Findmypast, but it appears to be a good source for verifying date of birth information, per a posting on WP:RSN. There is also a disclaimer, though, on the page that there may be transcription errors.

As an FYI, that you may be well-aware of, I have seen sources that she was from Salford, Kersal, and Hulme... mostly Kersal.

It does seem that the Oxford DNB would be a solid source - for Hulme - backed up by Chorlton from Findmypast - for a Chorlton/Hulme conclusion. I'm just a little perplexed why Kersal shows up often. Do you know?--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:07, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Births in the UK are recorded on individual certificates but accumulated in registers that cover three-month periods. So, anyone born Jan-Mar will appear in one register, Apr-Jun in the next, and so on. Go by the ODNB. The full date is indeed 26 Feb 1844 and it was Hulme. By 1861, she was living at Prestwich Park with her parents and siblings (and servants). PP is next door to Kersal and that may be where the confusion has arisen, although I'll check for you. PP is about two miles from me. 1851 census shows the family at 44 Dover Street in the parish of Chorlton-on-Medlock (south Manchester); 1861 shows them at Prestwich Park, which is north Manchester; 1871 shows her lodging at a house in Upper Brook Street and with occupation of "artist". UB Street is centre/south Manchester. In the following year, rate books show her as the ratepayer (primary occupant) at 8 Burleigh Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock. And so it goes on. You probably cannot use this in the article (primary sources) but it is definitely her. None of this really helps with the Kersal issue but if you want to list the sources that say it, I'll try to figure it out. The chances are that one source made an error and subsequent ones repeated it.

India is driving me daft at the moment. I've got an article at FAC (William Beach Thomas) and that's the sort of thing I do to take my mind off Asia. I see Sitush beat me to it. Yes births are recorded in quarters so Feb is correct for the March Quarter. At the 1851 census the family was living in Dover Street Manchester (that's where the university is now) and in 1871 she was lodging in Upper Brook Street (round the corner from Dover Street) occupation given as artist along with her sisters, Emily, Julia (also artists) and Mary and Frances (scholars) (they're on the next page). GA Cup - Round 3

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 3 Greetings, all! We hope that all of our American GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. Friday saw the end of Round 2. Two from 7 pools, plus a tie score and one wildcard (16 in all) moved onto the next round. Some pools were more competitive than others. Round 2's highest scorer was 3family6, with an impressive 255 points. Good888, who came in second place overall with 202 points, reviewed the most articles (19). The wildcard slot for Round 2 went to Jaguar. Congrats to all! Round 3 will have 15 competitors in three pools. The key to moving forward in Round 2 seemed to be reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; almost everyone who moved forward nominated at least one article from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup was also used to promote a group of articles about The Boat Race, a rowing race held annually since 1856 between Oxford University and Cambridge University, on the River Thames. 17 Boat Race articles were promoted to GA in November. In Round 2, 110 reviews were completed, as compared to 117 in Round 1. The GA Cup continues to be a success. This month, we got a report from User:AmericanLemming, who maintains the GA statistics, that in October, there was a net gain of 201 articles nominated for GA. He thought that more open GANs could mean that more editors are submitting more of their articles to the GAN process. In addition, having a high-throughput of GANs means that more articles get reviewed more quickly, which reduces the frustration of potentially waiting several months to get an article reviewed. The activity in Round 2 of the GA Cup seems to bear that out. It's our hope that the competitors' enthusiasm continues in Round 3, and we can continue to make a difference in helping more editors improve their articles. For Round 3, participants have been randomly put in 3 pools of 5 contestants each; the top two in each pool progressing, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on December 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on December 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here. There have been a couple of rules clarifications to announce. We're slightly changing the wording to the second bullet in "General rules", which now reads: You may only score points in a round for reviews which have been completed in that round. We're also including this clarification: Only reviews started during the competition are eligible. We have also lost a judge, so there are now only three judges. Good luck and remember to have fun as we move into the holiday season. It is the judges' hope that every competitor in the GA Cup has a joyous holiday season and Happy New Year. Hi Carole! Sorry again for the delay. I'm not quite sure what is appropriate here. I think I'll poke WikiProject Visual Arts again to see if anyone is familiar with this person, assuming he exists. On the one hand we could absolutely delete based on an indeffed user recreating the article. On the other hand, the subject might be notable. This article seems like it should count as significant coverage. And before we open an AfD, we have to perform WP:BEFORE, part of which requires that we check Google News and Google Books.
