Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Carlhatem. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Possibly (talk) 19:56, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Carlhatem. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Carlhatem. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Carlhatem|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Theroadislong (talk) 17:57, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Theroadislong for your valuable information but I have NOT been paid nor contacted by anyone, to write this article. Carlhatem (talk) 17:59, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Carlhatem: Then could you please explain the image in the article, which you uploaded and which reads "Caline El Khoury"and "wedding pictures"? See WP:COI above. Possibly (talk) 18:03, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here is another document you uploaded, which is marked as belonging to the article subject. So please be honest and clear about your conflict of interest. Possibly (talk) 18:11, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Possibly, I do not have any conflict of interest, as I have not been paid Nor contacted by any of them, I am being honest and I refuse to be treated as the opposite, Thank You. regarding these pictures, you could have asked me how I got them instead of making an accusation; I am writing articles on Wikipedia for the unique reason that I believe that the artistic and television history of Lebanon, my country, should be more documented for future generations. I got these pictures after doing research within my country and working very hard on documenting the start of television here in Lebanon, so please if you could help me in my goal of writing multiple articles on the people that have written the TV history in my country that would be great. Thank You Carlhatem (talk) 18:19, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. You have uploaded multiple personal images and documents that belong to the article subject. Obviously you have been in contact with El Khoury at some point, which is why we are asking about COI. How did you get the pictures? What is your conection to the subject? Possibly (talk) 18:34, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have not been in contact with Ibrahim El Khoury as he died in 2013, instead, I contacted her daughter to have the picture of the certificate and EL Khoury, so as previously said, I have been contacting all the people I can, in order to have the most legit information and pictures, so NO, I have not been paid, nor asked to write this article, nor did I informed someone related to El Khoury that I am writing this article. I have started collecting information about the old days of Lebanese television more than a year ago, and a week or so ago I decided to share my articles on Wikipedia, and I hope to continue sharing my articles about other influential people that have played a key role in developing the media and information industry here in Lebanon. I have no connection to Ibrahim El Khoury or his family, nor do I have a connection to the people I will share articles about in the future. Thanks for respecting my integrity and the fact that I respect all the Wikipedia rules.Carlhatem (talk) 18:45, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I also want to thank you for your effort in making Wikipedia as great as possible and I just want to let you know that this is nothing personal but I cannot accept it when someone questions my integrity.Carlhatem (talk) 18:48, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

And please I would like the mention "close connection with its subject" removed from Ibrahim El Khoury's article as it is not true. Thank YouCarlhatem (talk) 18:53, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Every week hundreds, if not thousands, of people come to Wikipedia to promote their companies or families or friends. This is why we ask. You are indeed connected to the subject, as you have talked to them, but it is quite a weak connection. What you are doing sounds fine, but you would be wise to make a short declaration of the above on your user page, in case others in future wonder how you came across them. Also, check out WikiProject_Lebanon and WikiProject Television as these may be helpful. Possibly (talk) 19:16, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much (talk), your work on Wikipedia is what makes this encyclopedia great, and clean from any issues you previously mentioned. I will follow your advice and mention it on my user page. if I could just ask you one last thing, I don't believe that the deletion of the entirety of the pictures from El Khoury's article is correct, I do understand that some of them may be problematic, but for example, his portrait picture has been explicitly released from its rights as per the author's authorization. thank You very much (talk), stay safe :) Carlhatem (talk) 19:22, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Carlhatem: the pictures are over at Wikimedia Commons, which is a "sister" project that is administered separately. I think it is sufficient to go to the deletion discussions there and say what you think. In general though, the copyright, if in question has to be explicitly cleared through something called OTRS (I must admit, it is a bit like a Kafka novel). Also, bear in mind that a personal document is not a source; we would consider that to be original research, which we avoid. Thanks. Possibly (talk) 19:31, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You Possibly, I will look more into it as I believe that the pictures I uploaded are clear from any copyright violation. Once again thank you for your help and time.Carlhatem (talk) 19:35, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
