DYK

[edit]

Looking through the history, that was a batch of credits left over from a previous template that hadn't been addressed all day. I just gave them out and went on making the next template. The job was set up in a rather bizarre set of updates to T:DYK/N by User:Archtransit. It appears that he/she set up the credits before working on the template, then realised that not all were going to fit, and neglected to return the removed articles to T:TDYK. The "update" begins here, credit for the article is added here, and the final template here. I'm afraid that the article never actually made it onto the front page. I'll see about rectifying that with the next update (and attach a note to the template explaining the situation). - GeeJo (t)(c) • 00:30, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And done! Apologies for any hassle caused :) ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by GeeJo (talkcontribs) 01:03, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. Thanks for your help.--Carabinieri 23:10, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it a POV problem when the Salahuddin article is mostly cited to a newspaper column by the subject himself. The self-bio is used as a cite to say that Salahuddin was the best young sportsperson in Bangladesh, eg the 2nd para. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say that articles based on autobiographies are inherently POV, although the reliability of these sources and the extent to which they establish notability could be challenged. I think in this case there are some POV problems. I have removed the sentence you referred to and another phrase that didn't seem neutral to me. The article also desperately needs some copyediting. If you think the article is still not neutral enough, feel free to remove the entry from the main page. BTW, I'm sorry I sort of un-did your update, I didn't realize you had gotten there before me until after it was too late.--Carabinieri 01:07, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Would the article of Kazi Salahuddin be still regarded as a DYK entry. If there's POV, we can remove them, I only tried to take the facts from his self-referred article. Regards --Tarif from Bangladesh 01:47, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking whether the entry can be featured on DYK again, if the concerns are adressed? I wouldn't see a problem with this.--Carabinieri 02:02, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Murderers.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Murderers.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:21, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am conducting this research for an introductory research methods class under Professor Peter Monge ( http://www-rcf.usc.edu/~monge/ ).

I hope that, if possible, you will participate in this survey. Please note that you must be 18 years older or over to participate.

Here is the link for the online survey, which begins with information pages detailing survey conditions and participant rights as well as my contact details for any questions:

License tagging for Image:Saint Paul City Hall.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Saint Paul City Hall.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --OrphanBot 15:09, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Hans Holbein d. J. 031.jpg

[edit]

I've noticed you temporarily uploaded Image:Hans Holbein d. J. 031.jpg from the Wikimedia Commons because it will be on the tomorrow Main Page. The {{Painting}} that redirects to Template:Infobox Painting is different from commons:Template:Painting, and the {{Creator:Hans Holbein d. J.}} which doesn't exist here is supposed to be copied from commons:Creator:Hans Holbein d. J. (maybe the prefix Creator: only applies to namespace in the Wikimedia Commons). You can copy content from User:ADNghiem501/sandbox to replace the two templates on the image's page, but the {{C-uploaded}} and {{PD-Art-YorckProject}} should stay there. -- ADNghiem501 (talk) 04:47, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh...sorry because the most current version of the Main Page wasn't completely reloaded in my browser before I left the first message here, I thought this image that I saw was still there. This may be out-of-date because a version of Template:Did you know has subsequently been changed. -- ADNghiem501 (talk) 05:31, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind...the image is no longer on the Main Page, so I've tagged the page with a speedy deletion template. -- ADNghiem501 (talk) 05:37, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

[edit]

I am sorry for the comment I made on the DYK. I think I spend too much time here, I need to take a wikibreak. I have no problems with international users, I only made that comment because someone called my edits to a page about Iranian terrorism, vandalism. Balloonman helped me out and pointed out that I was wrong and gave me a few suggestions that I will bring to the DYK. I hope you can forgive me but its a hard task to write two articles in four days, it kind of makes you tempermental.--STX 17:47, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carabinieri, I know you are adept at identifying, cleaning and submitting articles to DYK (Klasies). I have recently worked on Folke Heybroek and think it may be suitable. I have communicated with the copyright owner at folkeheybroek.com and expect them to submit some supportive images shortly. I would appreciate your inputs and be even more grateful if you do the submission. Regards Autodidactyl (talk) 18:05, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Autodidactyl,
I would suggest the following hooks for DYK: ...that Dutch artist Folke Heybroek's works include stained glass windows for schools and churches, oil paintings, abstract textile designs, and illustrations of Greek mythology?
I could, however, imagine that some people would object to this article being used on DYK because it is based almost completely on a fan site.--Carabinieri (talk) 12:47, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Autodidactyl (talk) 20:36, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks good.--Carabinieri (talk) 13:29, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your proposed next update, I'm a little uneasy about so political a hook being included during an election campaign. Wikipedia is bound to be attacked for favouring the campaigns of people it chooses to included on the mainpage and we aren't going to be able to afford everyone equal time. I know its a little unfair to the editor who has worked hard on the Tom Tancredo presidential campaign, 2008 article, but I don't its an appropriate hook. WjBscribe 13:23, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia isn't obliged to give every candidate equal time. I don't think this is a problem. We had an entry about Obama a few days ago and noone complained.--Carabinieri (talk) 13:29, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There was however complaint about this entry I believe. Is there a reasonably watched place where we could raise this for input from other? WjBscribe 13:32, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the entry from next update for now and raised the issue at WT:DYK.--Carabinieri (talk) 13:43, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I see we have an edit conflict on DYK. I'll let you work. If possible, let me put one DYK hook that I already cut and have to paste (so as not to lose it and hurt the person who worked on it). Archtransit (talk) 16:34, 29 November 2007 (UTC) DONE![reply]

Resin

[edit]

Hi,

Please forgive a newbie if he is using your talk page incorrectly. I am wondering why you deleted the Caucho Resin article. You comment just says advertising, but was there really NOTHING of value on that article? Now the only article on Resin is a stub that is now orphaned and extremely difficult to find. --Webbbbbbber —Preceding comment was added at 22:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted it because it didn't contain anything but advertising for a website, i.e. NOTHING of value. If you think this is a notable topic, feel free to create a neutral and referenced article, which establishes this notability.--Carabinieri 23:39, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would be happy to create an article about it if I knew anything about it. I was hoping that Wikipedia would have some information, as I don't even know what Resin is. But I guess that the article you deleted would not have helped anyway.  :-( --Webbbbbbber —Preceding comment was added at 01:16, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am also considering re-creating this page. While the original page may have been an advertisement, the fact remains that Resin is a useful piece of software, with desirable properties (e.g., the base server is open source, even though Caucho charges for an upgraded version (Resin Professional) and of course for support.

How do I know it's useful? The company where I work (not affiliated with Caucho) uses it for our main "cash cow" websites. I doubt that we're the only ones.

So, if the best available information is the company's own website, should we look for a less reliable, less complete (but "more authoritative") site that refers to it? This seems an odd situation, but it can't be _that_ rare in the world of rapidly changing software. Bgoldnyxnet (talk) 23:37, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK ungrammatical?

[edit]

Hi Carabinieri, and thanks for the quick response to my update request.

I just happened to notice though, that the first entry says the fish "can be found in coastal areas in as far away as South Africa, Japan and Vanuatu".

In retrospect "in as far away as" looks ungrammatical. Shouldn't it just be "as far away as"? Gatoclass (talk) 12:53, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed it to "as far apart as".--Carabinieri (talk) 12:55, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hoyt library and DYK

[edit]

I've restored it to the template because it's a December 3 article, and a rather good one - it just doesn't seem right to refuse it a place on DYK because we messed up the image allocation timing. Adam Cuerden talk 22:01, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But why would it be a problem to use it in the update after the following or to use the hook without the image? In any case, we can't have two images on DYK.--Carabinieri (talk) 22:25, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with Carabinieri on that. Although strictly speaking the limit is five days, there is no reason why we can't exercise a little flexibility in the course of creating better balanced updates. I think the current update is nicely balanced. The Hoyt library hook will be fine for the next bunch. Gatoclass (talk) 23:39, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure though why Carabinieri thinks that we can't do more than one image. I really don't see why not. Sometimes there are lots of good images, it seems wasteful not to use them. Gatoclass (talk) 23:43, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Every main page element has exactly one image, so I think it would look rather odd to have two on DYK. Besides it's always been consensus to use just one, so changing this should be discussed at WT:DYK and probably Talk:Main page first, since it's a pretty major change of the main page design.--Carabinieri (talk) 23:47, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Since it's gone in the next update, no problem, but I just wanted to be fair to the article creators. =) Adam Cuerden talk 04:17, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, I was wondering why you didn't credit anyone at your 7:25 UTC update? Thanks. Redrocketboy 16:05, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Because I didn't have enough time to do it right away. User:EncycloPetey removed the entries from the next update page after I was gone, so I assumed someone else had taken care of doing the credits. You seem to have noticed the entry was on the main page without any notification, so I doubt much harm was done by me taking so long.--Carabinieri (talk) 19:48, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK script

[edit]

Once you purge your cache, you should see a new tab (next to "history" at the top) when you edit a user talk page or article talk page. On the user talk, it will be listed as "user talk dyk" and on article, it will say "article talk dyk". When you click on "user talk dyk", there are 3 menu options: "dyk-auth", "dyk-nom" and "unsigned2". Ignore unsigned2. When you are crediting the author of an article, click the first one. It will prompt you for the title of the article (no link brackets are needed). Press enter, and then save the page. For the article talk page, you just need to press "dyk talk no sig" and save the page. Does that clarify things? Nishkid64 (talk) 19:23, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Purge your cache now. Also, what other tabs do you have next to history? What resolution do you use (800x600)? Nishkid64 (talk) 20:27, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I'll take a look at it later and see what's wrong. Nishkid64 (talk) 20:52, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed this discussion and I added it for myself. I had the same problem and I figured out my problem. My problem was the I needed to add Wikipedia as a Trusted website. I then allowed scripting from Trusted websites. It now works. I customized mine to take out many of the navigation menu items, for the seach box is off my screen on my 1024x768 screen. I run Wikipedia 2 of my computers: a wide screen and the 1024x768. You need to click "edit" to edit the talk page, and then first you get the "dyk-auth" and "dyk-nom" tabs. I hope this helps. Royalbroil 00:43, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
None of that worked, unfortunately. I've tried it on both Explorer and Firefox, with all kinds of screen resolutions, lowering my security level as far as possible, etc. --Carabinieri (talk) 14:39, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I can't figure it out. I had an issue at first with the DYK monobook last December, but Lar helped me figure it out. Contact him, and I'm sure he will be able to fix the issue. Nishkid64 (talk) 20:44, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've gotten quite rusty at javascript I'm afraid, I got mine to more or less work and stopped tinkering. (as you can see if you look at it, it's pretty crufted up, and now there is stuff in it that doesn't work any more) I might suggest not invoking his at all, just mine, to see what difference that makes. Do you have ANY functions that add extra tabs with dropdown functions? Sorry that's not more help. ( replied here to keep most of convo together) One thing that helps a LOT is to run the "Error console" from within Firefox. Clear it out, then try to go to a page and use a function, see what it says as it runs. Often you will spot errors that way. If for example the code to load tabs up is having problems it will throw errors. ++Lar: t/c 23:17, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Ludwig Fischer

[edit]

Hello Carabinieri, I'm puzzled by the message you left on my talk page, since the Ludwig Fischer factoid is not currently on the DYK display or in the archive.

It's not a big deal, as I'd prefer that it not appear. The editor who nominated it got the facts wrong, somehow imagining that Ludwig Fischer had been Mozart's friend before Mozart wrote the role of Osmin for Fischer to sing. It seems rather that the two men became friends as a result of their colloborating professionally. Cheers, Opus33 (talk) 18:43, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It appeared on the main page, but has been removed since and is in fact in the archives. If there was a mistake in the hook, it would have been nice, if you had mentioned that, while it was on the suggestions' page.--Carabinieri (talk) 18:48, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grossmarkthalle or Großmarkthalle

[edit]

Hi. I'm a tad dubious about the move from Grossmarkthalle to Großmarkthalle. Personally, I have no strong feelings about this (as a native German speaker, I'd tend to use ß), but ß and ss are interchangeable in this case, and looking at the discussion about, say Voßstraße (or Vossstrasse), using ß is not, apparently, generally acceptable on English wikipedia. Also, the ECB seems happy enough to use ss. athinaios (talk) 10:53, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought this discussion had been settled in favor of using ß, but apparently I was wrong (see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (standard letters with diacritics)). I'll revert my move.--Carabinieri (talk) 13:38, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Let's watch out though, as we'd both be happy enough with the ß, and policy on the topic seems far from decided. athinaios (talk) 14:14, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

German portal news archive - a more prominent location?

[edit]

Recently I started work on 2008 in Germany, an attempt to create a centralised, permanent, and (hopefully) well-cited chronicle of events in Germany - similar to other countries (eg. 2007 in Australia). Given your great work on the Germany portal (and its news section), I would like to invite you to join me in maintaining this page. As a long-term project, I was thinking of making pages for other years. That should help in making some sort of focus and highlighting what articles need work - there are Australian chronicles for every year since 1788 and they have proven very useful in article improvement. Since this is all rather new, I would also be interested in hearing any suggestions you may have. Thanks. - 52 Pickup (talk) 12:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's a good idea, I'll try to contribute. Many German magazines have been running Rückblicks of 2007 in the past weeks - Spiegel, for example, dedicated almost half of the December 31 issue to this. These reviews might be a basis for 2007 in Germany.--Carabinieri (talk) 02:27, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Another good source of info that I've been using to start up the 2007 page is the monthly chronicles on the de-wiki (eg. de:Januar 2007). While not Germany-specific, they contain a lot of Germany-related events that the en-wiki might have missed. Once the 2007 page is complete, it should be clearer what a good format might be - the current format is simply lifted from 2008 in Australia. As a very-long-term project, I'd like to try make similar pages for all years to as far back as 1871. - 52 Pickup (talk) 08:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Resin Application Server Page deletion?

[edit]

Please excuse me if this is the wrong place to ask this question

My name is Emil Ong and I work for Caucho Technology, the maker of the Resin Application Server. I noticed that you deleted the page for Resin Caucho_Resin in March 2007 as an advertisement for a website. I'm not sure if the page at the time was written in an inappropriate way, but the Caucho company did not author it. Nonetheless, we would still like to have a representative page in Wikipedia. In the meantime, the pages for other software, including commercial, closed source software, in this space remain available:JBoss,WebLogic,WebSphere,GlassFish,etc...

Most of these simply provide information about the company or group producing the software, the software itself, and links to the software's page. Is it possible to undelete the Resin page or allow us to reinstate it? We have no intention of violating Wikipedia's rules against advertising and conflict of interest, but we would like to have the same representation as these other projects. Thank you! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilong (talkcontribs) 21:15, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not the place to represent products; this is an encyclopedia. I ask you not to create such a page. JBoss, WebLogic, etc. have Wikipedia pages because there were editors who found those topics notable enough to create the pages. They are not representative pages, but encyclopedic articles. Please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not for more information.--Carabinieri (talk) 21:58, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. We will not create a new page in accordance with the rules and we will not ask anyone to do this on our behalf. All I am asking is that if an unbiased, non-promotional page is created without our intervention, as the previous page was, it will not be deleted. In those two previous cases, editors did believe that Resin is notable. Of course, we believe that our project is notable -- it has existed for 10 years and is used by over 7000 people and companies. How are decisions of notability made? and how can we offer evidence in such proceedings? Thank you. Emilong (talk) 23:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The previous page was deleted mainly because it consisted of little more than a link to an external website. For Wikipedia's rules on notability, please read Wikipedia:Notability. You can help Wikipedia create an article on this topic by leaving a note on this page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing and providing that WikiProject with reliable third-party sources. For information on what kind of sources we are looking for, please read Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Verifiability. If you're product was ever mentioned in a newspaper article or something similar, tell them about it and they may well write an article about this software. --Carabinieri (talk) 17:34, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've reworked the paragraph a bit. The FAU really did little more than help sell the bikes. It only became involved in the strike months after it started. According to NZZ, a local newspaper, 1,805 bikes were sold, so I've changed it to "over 1,800" in the article. I also changed the sources to three German newspaper reports, since they're more reliable than the Strike Bike's own website.--Carabinieri (talk) 02:32, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, is there any reason not to nominate this article for GA status? Murderbike (talk) 02:17, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I don't feel it meets the GA criteria. There are still many gaps in coverage, as a result of the fact that the sources I had at my disposition weren't very comprehensive. Further, there is the problem that there appears to be a group that calls itself FORA and claims to be in the FORA's tradition to this day. Apparently it has been in existence without interruption since the 1930s. You can find its website under www.fora-ait.com.ar (I can't link the website, because it's blacklisted. I'm still working on trying to find sources for this period. I'll be getting the book "Argentina: from anarchism to peronism: workers, unions and politics, 1855 - 1985" by Ronaldo Munck, et al, soon. Maybe it will help.--Carabinieri (talk) 13:42, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a look at Portal:Germany/Selected article/2008/March and see whether I have included all important facts for the portal teaser. Happy editing, Kusma (talk) 11:08, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you leaving us too?

[edit]

Mind me asking why? Murderbike (talk) 22:09, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I joined the project assuming it was about cooperation concerning articles related to anarchism. However, it seems to be mostly a project for anarchists imposing their POV on Wikipedia. I'm not an anarchist and I'm certainly not interested in pushing any kind of POV.--Carabinieri (talk) 18:49, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that's really a bummer, it's pretty apparent we could use a voice like yours around. Alas, I understand the frustration though. Good luck in what you do, Murderbike (talk) 02:04, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Leaving the field to some busy POV pushers is not an option, either. I can understand frustration with Wikipedia, but suggest sticking around and making edits now and then. -- Matthead  Discuß   19:14, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say I was leaving Wikipedia. Murderbike was referring to my removing my user name from the WP:ATF participants' list. I will still be editing articles related to anarchism; I just don't see any point in being a "member" of this task force anymore.--Carabinieri (talk) 23:46, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Anarchism.net

[edit]

Yo Carabinieri, I declined your proposed deletion on the grounds that the article has previously been unsuccessfully proposed for deletion and is thus invalid for another nomination of this kind. As an admin, I'm sure you're aware that WP:PROD is intended for uncontroversial deletions; looking at the history of this particular article, it's clear that any proposal to delete the article will be controversial. By all means feel free to nominate the article at WP:Afd if you deem it appropriate. Regards, скоморохъ 02:27, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the article, I think it's pretty clear that deleting this article should not be controversial at all. It clearly lacks evidence for notability. But I guess AfD will have to do.--Carabinieri (talk) 11:43, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Should not be" and "will not be" are very different things; it looks like the Afd is going your way though, so no worries. скоморохъ 23:55, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

After much to-and-fro, I'm happy to say this will appear on DYK? 6 April. As you can see from the article history and the discussion at DYK for 29 March (here), it took a bit of doing! JGHowes talk - 03:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks...

Thanks for your comments on my T:DYK (self-) nomination of Goliath Awaits. It was my first nomination and in retrospect I wish I'd had time to go to the library to find additional sources for the article prior to making it. I didn't realise that many of the google hits were for pay-only content, so I didn't anticipate it being quite so hard to find good sources. However, I completely agree that WP:RS is a very important guideline. I'm sure the next article I nominate will not have these problems! Cheers, -- Flyguy649 talk 23:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you access to pay-only online content, you may want to try WP:WRE. They may be able to help you. Good luck, --Carabinieri (talk) 23:44, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
