Tamaskan Dog

[edit]

Hi. Just wanted you to know I removed a fair bit of what you added to the Tamaskan Dog article today. I did this for the following reasons;

  • If you are going to say "dog people in Finland do not regard it as a Finnish breed" you need a cite that says exactly this. Who has asked the Finnish this?
  • Collating references to discuss what doesn't exist, as you do with; "However, there is not even an official breed club in Finland", is a form of original synthesis unless, again, there is a reliable source that makes this same point.
  • Same goes for breeders, and there isn't a call for listing individual breeders.
  • "It is also believed that the first larger kennel club that will recognize the breed will be the American Kennel Club, so the breed can at least nowadays be considered being mostly British-American." Who believes this? Who considers it mostly British/American? Wikipedia shouldn't contain unattributed speculation and opinions.

If you can address these concerns then please red-add to the article. Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:30, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm originally from Finland and I've read several discussions about the Tamaskan Dog in Finnish dog forums, for instance the Siberian Husky Association's forum. Dog people here are generally very confused about the breed and especially its "Finnish" origin (especially as being created by British breeders and with no Finnish breeders currently existing). However, I am a little unsure if I can refer to forum boards as a reference? If not, I won't add that one and I'll see if I find the same information from more official sources. The problem is that the "debate" about the breed status in Finland is based more on general opinion of dog people in Finland and the fact that the only Tamaskan kennel that even ever existed in Finland was Blustag, but I try to search later today if I can find something from books/internet. I still think the fact that activities with the breed and its breeding (such as national breed organizations and their listed breeders) are at the moment much more remarkable in North America and other parts of Europe than in Finland could be noted into relevance to the breeds origin. I think otherwise the article gives an image that the breed would also be bred in Finland due the note of its origin (while, however, at the moment there is no activity with the Tamaskan or its breeding). --Canarian (talk) 11:39, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

State dogs etc

[edit]

Hi Canarian, I noticed that you've been adding a number of state dogs as a note within the info box on a number of articles - it's great to see work being done on dog breed articles but I am a little concerned as to what you are using as a reference for these? I see you raised a query at the Chihuahua talk page and stated you had used another Wikipedia article as the source - unfortunately, Wikipedia cannot be used as a source and you would need to find an independent reference for any you may have included purely based on Wikipedia articles. Of course if a ref is given in the WP article and you are able to verify it, then you can use the original ref. If you have any questions (especially as I'm not sure I'm being very clear here), please feel free to drop a note on my talk page. Thanks for the work you've been doing. SagaciousPhil - Chat 20:39, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to search later today other sources otside the Wikipedia list. I think with the case of the Novascotia Duck Toller I already have a book stating that and with the Esquimaux there is a note about the territorial dog in the website of Nunavut, but I'll check both a little later. --Canarian (talk) 11:42, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Warren Hound

[edit]

Hello Canarian,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Warren Hound for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, Portuguese Podengo.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Kavdiamanju (talk) 17:13, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Portuguese Podengo is just one breed representing this type of dog. Warren Hound includes many other breeds as well, as listed in the article. Just like article "Podenco" in other Wikipedia languages refers to a different topic than Portuguese Podengo (for instance, here's the Spanish article about the subject and here the Swedish one). --Canarian (talk) 14:03, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Changing Categories on dog articles

[edit]

Why are you replacing en masse [[Category:Dog breeds]] with [[Category:FCI breeds]]? 7&6=thirteen () 17:03, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Dog breeds" is an upper category of several sub-categories in most of these articles. "Hunting dog" is an upper category of "scent hounds" and "hounds". When it comes to the "FCI Breeds", it's also a sub-category of the main category "Dog breeds". If I have understood correctly, upper/main categories are not needed, if one or several of their sub-categories are already used in the article. --Canarian (talk) 17:09, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You could accomplish just as much by adding [[Category:FCI breeds]] and leaving [[Category:Dog breeds]]. Where is the harm in overlap, assuming it exists? </nowiki> 7&6=thirteen () 17:14, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok for now on I'll leave the category dog breeds as well, as far as there is no clear guideline applying to overlapping categories. --Canarian (talk) 17:19, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with your addition. Only your subtraction. You've already done a lot of damage. 7&6=thirteen () 17:22, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When you put them in, add it in alphabetical order. 7&6=thirteen () 18:39, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to comment on the nomination, please do so at the second nomination.

Potsdam Greyhound page

[edit]

With respect, the eleven known dogs, either owned or bred by Frederick, all 'Italian greyhounds' or 'windspiel' are buried next to him at Sans Souci Brandenburg. In German and other European canine literature these dogs are known as Italian greyhounds, the progenitors of the modern 'breed' of the same name. It would be more convincing if this page could offer some German source on this so-called 'Potsdam greyhound' other than the single reference to the English writer Morris - otherwise this article lacks any credibility.--Richard Hawkins (talk) 17:41, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Please provide some primary (German and or Italian) source on this dog type (not a breed), it can only be the Windspiel, in which case this page is totally bogus. Desmond Morris is not an authority on Continental dog types.--Richard Hawkins (talk) 19:22, 30 May 2019 (UTC)--Richard Hawkins (talk) 12:33, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
