wikEdDiff

[edit]

Hi!
Could you please update the script? see user_talk:Cacycle/wikEdDiff#External_link_bug. -- seth (talk) 21:02, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please could you point me to a diff page with a broken link? Otherwise it is difficult to fix and test. Thanks, Cacycle (talk) 00:25, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Probably fixed in version 0.9.6, please Shift-Reload to update and please report any problems. Cacycle (talk) 02:09, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

jspreview/warning

[edit]

Hi. About the edits you made to MediaWiki:Jswarning and MediaWiki:Jspreview; it would seem that it actually does work. Of course the preview only works on the page you are previewing so any scripts that you have that wouldn't normally affect those pages wouldn't work on preview. I've just tested it by blanking my Monobook.js page and previewing which did indeed remove all of the links and tabs that the scripts add to that page. Mind undoing your edits? Also note that it works for .css also. I noticed you were modifying your Vector.js page around the same time you made those edits so perhaps this is just an issue with the vector skin. Regardless, it works by default (on monobook). - Rjd0060 (talk) 14:45, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have tried it under vector on vector.js and it definitely does not get executed there. I will try it under monobook on monobook.js and an another .js page and will put the warning back in if I see the code being executed. Cacycle (talk) 18:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have tested all skins. JavaScript will be executed on preview pages under Monobook, Simple, MySkin, and Chick. It will not be executed under Vector, Nostalgia, Modern, Cologne Blue, and Classic. I have added updated warnings back in. Thanks for noticing this! I actually did not expect any skin dependence for this. Cacycle (talk) 23:48, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Usability and accessibility of Navbox

[edit]

Hello. I'm a user from the french Wikipedia. I'm a big fan of your WikEd. :-)

I would like to improve the Web usability and Web accessibility of the Navbox template, and I need your help with the Javascript. I did usability testing on the Navbox, and made a complete review with an accessibility expert.

I need someone able to add to icons to the show/hide button of the Navbox (and a few other improvements as well) just like the following example:

Capital cities of the Member States of the European Union show

v d e

Capital cities of the Member States of the European Union hide

v d e

Example of content: Amsterdam · Athens · Berlin · Bratislava · Brussels · Bucharest

Here is the context: I was working with one of the best french Web accessibility expert until a while ago. He was an admin on the french Wikipedia. We were planning on improving the Navbox and we had many discussions about it. Then, because of reccurent difficulties to interact with some part of the community, he decided to take a break. After some time, he will try to find another way to participate, without being an admin nor a active contributor. So our plan to improve Navbox was suddently suspended.

The Navbox was reviewed by an expert, and he explained all to me. But I am blocked, 'cause I am no Javascript expert. Could you help me with Perhaps you have heard about WAI-ARIA?

The Navbox is something that the Wikipedia Usability Initiative is unlikely to improve, because it is a content produced by the users only. I do believe they don't want to get involved with those things.

If you agree to help me, then I suggest to follow Xeno's advice: we'll do the WP:VPT post to gather opinions first. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 17:10, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'd be glad to help. What exactly are you planning in full detail? You might not even need any additional javascript as the show/hide function is already implemented, at least on en. Cacycle (talk) 18:48, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just read User:Dodoïste#Navbox, no javascript needed, just some css and html in the template. Why don't you create a copy of a navbox somewhere in you user space to improve and test it. Cacycle (talk) 18:53, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Working on it, almost done. The difficult part will be to convince the crowd at Template talk:Navbox. I actually do not see any reason to keep the v and d links and the left e link should become a right [edit] link. Cacycle (talk) 04:53, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The VDE links themselves come from {{Navbar}} (but you probably already knew that). And the main thing impeding a change like this will be ensuring it doesn't break any existing usages - nested navboxes in particular have hampered past efforts to have large-scale changes made to {{navbox}} since the current design was put in place. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 17:06, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dinoguy1000: Do you have a link to the discussion about those earlier problems? What are your ideas about omitting v and d? The changed navbox already works locally on my computer and I am currently setting up a Wikipedia test page in my user space (that requires the addition of importScript and @import on monobook/vector.js/css). Cacycle (talk) 17:35, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of such discussions on Template talk:Navbox and probably in the archives. Personally, I prefer all three links being present, but that's probably just because I'm so used to seeing them all (even more so, given how much time I spend cleaning navboxes up). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 17:42, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wooow ! Thanks Cacyle. I love dynamic people like you and Xeno, I'm really enjoying this english Wikipedia. :-)
User:TheDJ saw my message on Xeno's talk page, and is also working on it. I suggest you to work together.
As you stated, this improvement can be a trivial thing to do, and making it this way will suffice to improve usability. But, if we want to make the Navbox accessible, things might get complicated. So, to improve usability is good enough for now, and to improve accessiblity will be a plus: we'll try, and if we can't it will be okay.
Icons like '▼ show' '▲ hide' are good for sighted users, but can not be red as useful text by a screen reader. So we'll need to add images with alt text to the button. And you might really need WAI-ARIA. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 03:58, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
User:TheDJ wrote a comment at Template talk:Navbox#Usability and Accessibility. :-) Dodoïste (talk) 18:02, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, this sounds pretty interesting. You may want to leave a notice/comment at Template talk:Navbox about this, to get more feedback and maybe even some help. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 19:43, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation Popups Gadget Proposal

[edit]

Thanks for the positive feedback on the translation popups proposal.

If you want you can change some of the code of my monobook.js and dictionarylookup1.js file to put some of the changes in yourself. Otherwise, I can do them. Let me know if you want me to do them.

You can disable/enable the gadget by clicking on the "Translation Popups--ON" tab and clicking the "Turn Translation Popups OFF" link. How about if we put in your 'hotkey plus cursor position' as an option, since the Google toolbar itself does not have this feature, and it is widely used.

Endo999 (talk) 02:20, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for aloowing me to make trivial UI changes. But I don't think I would support it without the hotkey as the default option. The hotkey should probably be the Shift key because Ctrl-click is used for opening links in new tabs and I don't want the popup popping up when I try to open a link. Cacycle (talk) 02:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for changing the text.

I have

1) fixed the "UNKNOWN" language. It isn't there now.
2) put in an option so that the SHIFT key down is necessary for a popup to happen. I will make this the default option as you wish. If you turn off the option in the Translation Popups Tab popup then the popups will happen without the shift key being down.

Endo999 (talk) 06:24, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As for the name, how about 'GoogleTrans', as it is Google that does the translations. Many people do know about the Google translation services. You are welcome to change the text in the code for this.

Endo999 (talk) 08:59, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you going to make the GoogleTrans code a gadget? It got another favorable review. TheDJ said he would make it a gadget, but then I didn't hear from him for 3 months. How do you feel about the name 'GoogleTrans'?

Endo999 (talk) 18:04, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have spent some time finding a descriptive name but did not find anything as good as GoogleTrans... Why don't you adjust your script, let us test it, and get at least one more opinion on Wikipedia:Gadgets/proposals. If no further concerns are raised you could make it a gadget yourself. And do not take a lack of quick response personally as we are all pretty busy, on Wikipedia as well as in real live. Sometimes you just have to push your case repeatedly. Cacycle (talk) 19:15, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the tools name to GoogleTrans. I am not an administrator. Don't you have to be and administrator to put up a gadget? Anyway thanks for your support so far. The tool has received favorable reviews from TheDJ, Yug, yourself, and Kingoieiii, so it does have some support, although everybody has asked for their changes to it.

Endo999 (talk) 20:58, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is clearly one of the more ambitious and high-quality gadgets and I would take lack of negative critique as strong support ;-) I forgot about the admin thing, so I will probably make it a gadget this weekend in a way that you can still edit the script. You might want to create/extend a descrption/help and a discussion page for user support, bugs, and feature requests. Cacycle (talk) 22:37, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do you feel about making GoogleTrans a gadget now. Is there anything else you wish me to do? Thanks for your help on this.

Endo999 (talk) 04:01, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Following changes made:
1) All references to 'TranslationPopups' changed to 'GoogleTrans' in code and in cookies
2) '->FRENCH' in popup now is '-> FRENCH'
3) 'Source:Google' in popup now is 'Source: Google'
I will look at the Browser specific tests verses javascript tests for capabilities in the future as you have asked.

Endo999 (talk) 00:42, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thanks for creating the GoogleTrans gadget files. I very much appreciate that. You still need to include the tool in the list of gadgets you can select in your profile, so other people can start using it. Do you have plans to do that soon?

Endo999 (talk) 04:08, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Very Very Much cacycle. Thanks for your sponsorship of the gadget. Hopefully it will have good use among the intermediate learners of English who read the enwiki in large numbers.

Thanks also for the SHIFT idea and the wgUserLanguage idea. Both of them fleshed out the tool.

I do have code that extends the translations to input fields and textareas, and which allows for replacements of the text within those fields, but that can wait for a later day.

Endo999 (talk) 04:05, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Here are replies to your objections. I posted them here to avoid clutter, and because you largely seem to have misread/understood the proposal.

  • 1) This is an opt-in option, by no means a default.
  • 2) Are you a programmer?
  • 3) So what? This can be viewed as an "extension" only for the English Wikipedia.
  • 4) Stub pages not are appropriate for an encyclopedia: "A stub is an article that is too short to contain suitably encyclopedic material".
  • 5) Have you read the "experiences section"? (These are the only two users that I know have tried such a thing.)
  • 6) Well that is your point of view. But anyway, if you want disambiguation pages in a different colour, have them in a different colour! The proposal is opt-in, not opt-out.
  • 7) This is not something to be made default behavior. It is opt-in, not opt-out.
  • 8) Scripts already exist. It is a matter of making it a "one-click" option, resolving any performance issue, and proposing it to the users.

wikEdDiff bug?

[edit]

I recently installed wikEdDiff in my monobook,js, and I like generally; thank you. But I get a strange display on this diff (  after the deleted lines). And when I press the “Show improved diff view” button on that diff, IE7 hangs so totally that can barely stop it even with Task Manager. —teb728 t c 06:05, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Thanks for fixing the   problem. I see now that my browser did not hang, but just took forever on a very long article. Am I right in understanding that your script finds differences entirely on the client side? Is there some way that it could be done at least partly on the server side? The server, after all, is comparing versions for the ordinary diff listing. —teb728 t c 01:41, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it first fetches the articles to be compared from the server and then calculates the diff locally. The calculation should be relatively fast though, especially if you use a modern browser such as Firefox 3.5 or Chrome (unfortunately, MS-IE is still crappy, especially when it comes to execution speed). Link, statistical association... what's the difference? Oh yeah, one of them is significant and damning, and the other is basically meaningless. I love this language. Good catch. --King Öomie 13:58, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure what you are trying to tell me :-) But it is generally important to make clear that association does not imply causality. Epidemiological studies are notoriously bad at establishing causal relationships for all but the strongest associations (tobacco vs. cancer, diabetes...). Cacycle (talk) 15:58, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I meant "good catch". I've read that article and completely missed that. I absolutely abhor people that see every scientific study as establishing loads of causative links (especially ones they already believed were there). Correlation does not imply causation after all- there's a definite positive correlation between worldwide obesity numbers and the amount of satellites in the sky, for example- better start shooting them down! =D --King Öomie 16:04, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not attack other editors, as you did at WP:OUTLINE. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. Making a unsupported and unsupportable personal attack against an editor is not a step in WP:DR. Please leave personalities out of it, and keep descriptions factual. Verbal chat 19:06, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case somebody wonders about this message: I have warned User:Verbal for starting a revert war on his talk page [1] and have discussed his disruptive and provocative behaviour on Wikipedia_talk:Outlines [2]. Cacycle (talk) 01:35, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Cacycle, the warning was used inappropriately. -- penubag  (talk) 05:36, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That was not a warning, it was a direct personal attack and demonstrably untrue. The porovocative and disruptive behaviour is the undiscussed mass moves made by the outline project to the controversial outline name, the duplication of existing articles and functionality, the attacks on and untruths stated about anyone who objects, and mass GFDL violations. The above warning was justified, as further attacks (including accusations of "edit" or "revert" warring, when following WP:BRD) will result in a block. See WP:DISRUPTIVE for problems with the activities of the outline project's behaviour, and WP:AGF, WP:CIVIL, and WP:NPA for why this behaviour in particular is inappropriate and deserves a warning. Please stop personalising this dispute. Verbal chat 07:56, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Outlines

[edit]

I am finding it tricky to keep up with the arguments now. I tried to find consensus but due to many side remarks, POV and such the discussion is fragmented. I have seen this type of tactic before when an argument seems like it is getting somewhere - throw in a different argument ( or one who's discussion isn't concluded under another section) to derail it. Its an attempt to rid opposers by confusion and mass editing rather than civil discussion of the issue at hand. I'll continue to try but also think it is time for outside help and maybe some hand slapping to keep things civil and structured... Lee∴V (talkcontribs) 14:12, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A structured, concise, and well referenced request for comment would definitely help with that. I desperately hope we get the support from both parties and opponents, otherwise this issue will have to be escalated in the dispute resolution hierarchy where we will have to focus more on users actions than on the actual dispute. Cacycle (talk) 14:31, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is more fundamental than that. An RfC on outlines is doomed to harm Wikipedia however well-referenced it is - by being a protracted battle over almost nothing (page names/locations). Even worse, it could likely go the wrong way and result in the degradation of outlines. That is because outlines are not very well understood by the vast majority of editors. For the issue to be thought through adequately by general editors to make an informed decision, would require a well-referenced treatise on outlines "IRL" (in real life). What they are, what their applications are, they're history, and what can potentially be done with their data using outline-technology - that's where 90% of their potential lies and it is why standardized outline formats are needed and have been utilized by the outline wikiproject). But, such a treatise would be very time-consuming to compile. It would probably take less time to build a rudimentary program for demonstration purposes.
An RfC would be an escalation of a storm in a teacup, wasting far more editors' time than the current disputes do. The next phase of evolution of outlines on Wikipedia entails programming elements (Mediawiki features, a script like WikEd, or something else). There are enough outlines currently to support the design, to build, and test such software (without damaging the outlines or how they appear to those not utilizing the software).
There is already enough data in parsable outline formats on Wikipedia to support the next phase of development. Besides, I'm tired of building outlines without an outline processor - it's like walking instead of flying a jet aircraft.
It would be useful if outlines remained intact (and not devolved), as that would relieve us of having to make a proposal to restore them when the software is ready. It would also be a shame if they were rejected or repurposed, since outlines are already more useful in their current state of development than Wikipedia's other navigation systems, and would serve their purpose well while waiting for the dynamic portion of the project to be completed. Retaining outlines would ensure that the outline data remains as an integral part of Wikipedia, to compete with any offshoots that are likely to result. Wikipedia's editor base is what keeps it ahead of the competition - but not if it doesn't compete.
Engaging in a move war, move debate, or whatever isn't a good use of outline developers' time. Discussion and development of the next phase is. That's where I will be focusing the majority of my efforts from now on.
The Transhumanist 04:43, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus should be found by centralised discussion and RfCs, not by members of the outline project voting on individual pages using a failed policy to support their positions. Verbal chat 07:02, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bug in /skin.js code

[edit]

Since your username doesn't have spaces you probably missed the fact that wgUserName does not replace spaces with underscores so the code right now works only for some users :). — AlexSm 15:43, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I have changed wgUserName to encodeURI(wgUserName.replace(/ /g, '_')). Cacycle (talk) 20:21, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I didn't say anything about encodeURI and I think now you're excluding all users with non-ASCII characters in their usernames, since wgPageName is not encoded. Replacing spaces with underscores should have been enough. — AlexSm 21:11, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you think that if I test the url for the username I have to urlencode wgPageName? :-) Cacycle (talk) 01:19, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But you do not test the url, your new code encodes the username and then tries to compare it to wgPageName which is not percent-encoded. If I get to insert such code in my home WM wiki, it will probably be something like
if (wgNamespaceNumber == 2 && wgArticleId == 0 && wgTitle.indexOf(wgUserName) == 0) {
 var skinMatch = wgTitle.substr(wgUserName.length).match(/^\/skin\.(js|css)$/i)
 if (skinMatch.length > 0)  window.location.href =
  window.location.href.replace(/\/skin.(css|js)/i, '/' + skin + '.' + skinMatch[1].toLowerCase())
}
AlexSm 06:29, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I have fixed it, I should have paid more attention, thanks for pointing this out :-) Feel free to add your code instead, I have read it and it should work fine. Cacycle (talk) 14:31, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi guys. This needs no action from you, I just want to inform you:
The Special:MyPage/skin.css and Special:MyPage/skin.js links are really nifty. But for IP-users and user's that don't have javascript enabled those links fail in a way that probably is very confusing. And that has made me hesitate to use those links in documentation and in discussions. So I intend to add a fall-back, I am going to make it so those users see {{skin-file disambig}} when they click such a link. See more about this at MediaWiki talk:Noarticletext#More notices.

AVT suggestion

[edit]

I don't know whether you're still interested in maintaining AVT. I have recently modified PILT to use Ajax when issuing a MediaWiki rollback, rather than opening a new window. I wouldn't say it's a lot faster but it's certainly lighter on resources. Feel free to pick it up if you wish, with or without the chameleon IP detection. Apology from IOwnUtopia

[edit]

Ok. I honestly don't know much about wikipedia and I know that i come across as an insane person with radical ideas. That very well might be the truth, but I do know what I'm writing about, even if I don't quite understand yet the proper formatting and maybe even the proper use of wikipedia yet. What I am is an organic and bio-chemist and horticulturalist. I just notice that there is some outdated information about some of the topics. Particularly, the safrole compounds -- they are used in so many foods and cosmetics. Also, there have been numerous discoveries of natural ligands of cannabinoid receptors outside of the cannabis genus. I guess i might come across as having an agenda but I think it's funny for there to be an enormous debate over making marijuana legal when there is literally no shortage of opioid ligands and cannabinoids found in nature and even in widely available commercial products, amongst an unending quantity of psychedelics, stimulants, etc. I'm sorry for causing a disturbance. No need for excuses. Just read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Reliable sources and edit accordingly. That means you have to provide reliable sources even if you are convinced something is true. Reliable sources in this context usually means the scientific literature and the current scientific consensus. Cacycle (talk) 16:07, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

update on wikEd question.

[edit]

You might not have noticed the update on the wikEd page due to all the later posts, but I can't get this working: User talk:Cacycle/wikEd#Simple occasional access to wikEd.

If the problem/solution isn't obvious to you, let me know and I'll ask on mwusers.com. thanks! --Chriswaterguy talk 06:01, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I will check into this next week. Have you preserved UTF-8 (see comments on top of the wikEd code)? Cacycle (talk) 18:47, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. I found this in a comment in the code, but couldn't understand it: "The code has to be saved as UTF-8 in your editor to preserve Unicode characters like ♥ (heart)"
I'm installing the short code that references your page, rather than the full code, but I'm confused - I didn't think there were any Unicode characters in that short code. And how do I know if I'm saving in UTF-8; and by editor, you just mean the edit box? --Chriswaterguy talk 15:18, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Btw I just remembered wikEd is now a gadget on Wikipedia. That provides a "good enough" solution for us, which I really appreciate. If we get the "wikEd on a single page" worked out, that would be even better, but there's no stress. Thanks. --Chriswaterguy talk 15:40, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please see my reply under User_talk:Cacycle/wikEd#Simple occasional access to wikEd. Good luck, Cacycle (talk) 20:26, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still not working. Has that method (making it work on one page only) been done successfully elsewhere? If I could see how they did it, that may help. --Chriswaterguy talk 13:44, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Italics in lead section

[edit]

I noticed your removing of {{italictitle}} from some articles in accordance with discussions on its talk page. However, you also changed the font from italic to regular in the lead section (e.g. [4][5], [6]), and AFAICT the MOS has not changed in this regard. Titles of journals, books, movies, court cases etc. are still italic, just not in the title. Am I missing something? Rl (talk) 09:39, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I skipped the deprotonation step because it was kind of obvious.

AFAIK the lower step is one of the many decomposition pathways that LSD will undergo if exposed to even moderately acidic conditions. Under acidic conditions the activated alkene will change to a more stable (more conjugated) product. John Riemann Soong (talk) 20:19, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you can find references, then you can add the content back with those references. We have pretty strong guidelines on so-called "original reseacrh" and speculations, please read WP:OR. Cacycle (talk) 20:24, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As for the isomerization: it is simply deprotonation/reprotonation on C8. Cacycle (talk) 20:26, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but this step is (mostly) reversible. The isomers aren't really any more stable than the active form.
I should actually remove some of the equilibrium arrows, but the bottom reaction refers to less-than-reversible decomposition, like why LSD is so sensitive to what most would consider mild conditions. AFAIK it's not OR -- it's a common sense pathway probably actually leading to a spread of products which can easily be found. John Riemann Soong (talk) 20:30, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If it is so obvious, then you will be able to find references in the scientific literature. But speculations have no place in Wikipedia articles, please read WP:OR :-) Cacycle (talk) 20:38, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's an extended enamine -- hardly a speculation. I'm actually supposed to search for something else (like a sugar to modify gold nanorods with) this afternoon. Btw, it reaches enol form via deprotonation and reprotonation. Whether it changes into the other enantiomer via an enol or an enolate is a minor issue. It probably does both depending on the pH. John Riemann Soong (talk) 20:49, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"a common sense pathway probably actually leading to a spread of products which can easily be found" is exactly WP:OR. Or at least it's a proposal that Cacycle is objecting to, and therefore it's up to you to find a WP:RS to allow others to verify that this idea is valid in this case. Proposing mechanisms is a world different from saying "2+2 therefore 4"--whole papers get written and rejected and old literature held up as examples of now-disproven "seems obvious" mechanistic proposals. I agree it seems like a reasonable way to get from known structure to known structure, but how is a hypothesis that needs actual support to be included in an encyclopedia. Customize the default background?

[edit]

Hi. Do you know if there is a way for a user to customize the background image used by default for all Wikipedia pages?

I am using the Monobook skin, but I want to replace the default "headbg.jpg" with a different background — in large part so I can provide myself with an additional visual cue to confirm that I am logged in. I assume there must be some way for me to do this by putting something in my monobook.js and/or monobook.css, but I'm not familiar enough (yet) with the Wikipedia page layout to know how to do this. Lupin's AVT question

[edit]

Hey, you're listed on the talk page as a go-to for questions about the script:

  • Do you know if Lupin or anyone else maintains a database of bad editors and bad-words. Not the bad-words list itself, but a data dump of all of the times that the bad-word filter was triggered and whether or not it resulted in a rollback?
  • Also, is there a Lupin's AVT blacklist? I know that when I use the tool it color codes past-reverted editors in green. Is that a local feature in my cookies, or is that part of a central database. And given such a database, do you have access to it?

I obviously wouldn't expect you to just give it to me, but I know some new RCP/AVT projects where it might be useful, assuming it can be properly handled. If you have any thoughts, let me know. Thanks! Ocaasi 08:48, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

May I comment? There's no DB of bad editors - the list of past-reverted editors is maintained by your copy of the script and only refers to your own reverts in that session. I wouldn't have thought that a DB of bad editors would be terribly efficient - there's an awful lot of them, each of whom makes not that many edits, because they're always getting blocked. Some tools, but not AVT, pick up on edits made by editors that have just been reverted by someone else. That could be added to AVT, and I've thought of adding it to PILT, but the tools that do that tend to be very fast, so adding it to AVT might not help much. Philip Trueman (talk) 10:09, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's a neat discussion going on at STiki creator User:West.andrew.g's talk page. His vandalism software can adapt new filters which coordinate with other algorithms to calculate a composite vandalism-likeliness score. I'm trying to collect any data that might be useful to that approach, and an enormous database of prior reverts by editor/ip could be useful, I thought. Maybe not. Do you know about whether data from the AVT badwords list is stored, i.e. all of the edits that were reverted using AVT due to its badwords edit-filter being triggered? Ocaasi 14:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fairly certain it isn't stored - JavaScript doesn't lend itself to writing streams of data anywhere permanently. You might have better luck asking on the talk pages of other tools (Huggle, Igloo). What exactly would you be aiming to extract from such a mountain of data? It quite often happens that AVT-like tools flag an edit for one reason and the user reverts it for some totally different reason - you can't rely on the reason that triggered the filter being valid. Also misleading is the case where a vandal makes two bad edits in quick succession, and the user reverts based on one of them. Both may get reverted, but you may not be able to tell which of the two triggered the filter or the revert. In any case, it seems to me that finding the edits that trigger reverts is the reverse of what's wanted - what you want is to find the edits that didn't trigger reverts but were nevertheless bad. I once toyed with the idea of inverting the logic in PILT so it only displayed edits that didn't trigger the filter, but recording which of those edits were bad, and why, was a challenge. A program that sits on the RSS or IRC feeds looking for reverts and undos, by experienced editors, of single edits that are timestamped quite some time before might gather something useful in the way of dodgy phrases that aren't currently looked for - this isn't very far from what Cobi tried for when he asked for bad edits that ClueBot had missed. If you're more interested in flagging edits by returning known vandals then I know that Excirial was working on something called Coreva, but I don't know how far he got with it. Philip Trueman (talk) 16:09, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For me, Lupin's best feature is the RegEx Badwords list. Using the Filter Recent Changes feed produces tons of vandalism, and it's often caught even before Cluebot, even before the Huggle horde. That said, lots of badword matches are false positives. What I wanted to do, in theory, was look at every time any of the individual regex matches occurred, and see what % of those matches were reverted. Over a massive data set, that would give a correlation between each badword and vandalism. That can then be matched up with other data about new edits, to give a more refined measure of the vandalism-likelihood.

You should really check out the documentation on STiki, because it lays out like 15 different filters that all correlate separately to vandalism; then it computes a composite number to determine if an edit should be reviewed. If Lupin's/PILT's filter could be combined with STiki's metadata algorithm, and put in front of the eyes of all Hugglers, this place would be a lot cleaner a lot faster with a lot less work.

You're right about the false negatives, all of the edits that don't get 'caught'. That's the subtle stuff, and it's always on the frontier. I don't think we'll really crack that problem until the majority of more obviously vandalism detection is nearly automated. I don't think that there is a deep secret, however, to why vandalism slips through and what kind does. Here's my list:

  • Vandalism that just happens too fast and is not caught by any of the RC patrollers. Generically, whenever the vandalism rate exceeds patroller ability, some will slip through. This is obviously solved by more efficient tools and more patrollers (assuming we can't directly control the vandalism rate).
  • Vandalism which involves the deletion of good information, typically only a paragraph or two. This is difficult to immediately judge as vandalism. STiki tests for the addition or removal of bytes and factors that into its algorithm.
  • The replacement of a fact with a false fact, or changing a number slightly to an incorrect amount. This is virtually impossible to track manually. That is, however, what some recent research from UIowa was studying and it had good results. Whether that can be integrated into a tool on Wiki is less certain.

I don't think there's that much else in the vandalism world that isn't on the radar. Some of it slips through the net, but I think more often that happens because it's not a great net, not because we don't know where to drag it. End metaphor. Do you have other hunches about the vandalism that isn't caught? Ocaasi (talk) 16:44, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree about Lupin's badwords list; PILT is just AVT speeded up a bit. Of course, the reason badwords has got so good is that so many people have contributed to it. I've a few ideas for detecting semantic vandalism - it should be possible to do something to detect tampering with dates, and any replacement in the body of the article of the string that is the article title with a string that isn't is also suspect. Beyond that I think we need to bear WP:BEANS in mind. Philip Trueman (talk) 17:43, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I like your changes a lot. I didn't know about it until today. If PILT had automatic warnings and suppression of prior reverts it would be dangerously effective. As for WP:BEANS, I think they're already stuck up there. Which is a good thing, because there's a new community of researchers who are brainstorming about every possible kind of vandalism and how to detect it. I don't think we'll encourage anyone in this case. If you really want to see creative vandalism, go to the WP:LTA Long Term Abuse page, where the real monsters lurk. Whatever you've seen with PILT is nothing compared to that havoc. Or so I've heard. Ocaasi (talk) 20:18, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

cat pheromone

[edit]

A friend recently highlighted the wikipedia entry on cat pheromone to me and said how surprised they were by it. I checked and I noticed a number of errors in your account, which I tried to correct. However, I notice that you seem to have returned the entry to your original version. As someone who has worked in academia on these products for over 10 years I would very much appreciate being able to open up a dialogue with you about this, as I think it is important that misconceptions are not perpetuated through wikipedia. I am happy to declare that the company that produces some of the related products (Ceva Animal Health) has sponsored some of my research but I do not benefit financially from this arrangement and the reason they come to this University is because they are seeking independent scientific advice or research. I should perhaps mention I am not a regular Wiki use so it may be easiest to contact me directly. We can then perhaps establish what issues need to be resolved and the evidence necessary for this. diff Script Question

[edit]

Hi! I've been eying your diff script, and I was wondering if you had any notion of performance for the diffing algorithm - specifically, how fast is it compared to the default diffing algorithm, or others you've seen? I am interested in using it to calculate diffs and subsequent metrics on a large volume of WP content. Because this may be time consuming for you, especially if you don't happen to know metrics, do you know a quantitative method I could use to measure the speed of your algorithm? I'm not very good with javascript, and I do most of my work in python... But I think I can pick it up quickly enough. Thanks! Equalx (talk) 19:06, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The different algorithms do different things! So it depends on what you want to achieve. This one indexes every word-like element for both texts, then finds unique words, and uses these as anchors to find identical texts. You end up with two word arrays and pointers that connect equivalent words. My guess is that this might be slower than line or sentence based approaches, but it is the only (?) method to detect block moves. Also, there is room for speed improvement, e.g. you could start with sentence or paragraph elements instead of words as a first step before switching to word elements. I can email you the original article if you want. Also, you might want to use a different language if you don't want to run it in a web browser. Cacycle (talk) 11:19, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I wrote about some problems on the wikEd discussion page and I gave my solutions to them, don't know if they work, but I think so. I would be pleased if You check that. Regards, Vinne2 (talk) 20:40, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Galician translation for wikEd

[edit]

I've made the Galician translation for wikEd interface. You can find it here: User:Toliño/wikEd international gl.js. Could you add it please? Thanks a lot! --Toliño (talk) 10:40, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I have added it to wikEd. Cacycle (talk) 12:39, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About WikEd and CKEditor

[edit]

Hi friend, I am a cuban working in the Health Service in Baracoa,Cuba, it will be possible to integrate like a pluggin WikEd in CkEditor to work stand alone?, I have made some a few apports to Wikipedia in spanish, and actually I am working in a Portal of my natal region Baracoa in our national Enciclopedia , here is the link if you want to see it:

http://www.ecured.cu/index.php/Portal:Baracoa

off course in spanish, the reason of my ask is that I want to use your editor in my work and it is possible to adecuate it to use in ours, and stand alone too. Will you answer to my personal address: kaldym.gtm@infomed.sld.cu ?

Excuse my bad english, because I am spanish spoken... Thanks for reading me --Brujo (talk) 11:39, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kaldym. I am not sure if I understand you correctly, but CkEditor and wikEd are completely incompatible. Therefore, wikEd actually terminates ifself if it detects the presence of CkEditor. wikEd can be used "stand alone" on a local file, but, of cause, anything that requires an online connection does not work, including submitting/saving. Hope this helped, Cacycle (talk) 17:06, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Highlighting

[edit]

Hi Cacycle. I find this highlighting very useful and I would like to have something like that, but only for images. I don't need thumbnail preview, but only highlighting of [[File:something.jpg]] in the edit window. Is it possible and can you help me with that? I suppose I need to add something to my css page. mickit 08:55, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, only wikEd offers this type of highlighting. You can get it only as part of the whole editor. Cacycle (talk) 11:48, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you. mickit 13:04, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any reason not to "just" use WikEd ? Krinkle (talk) 17:31, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I like the idea of highlighting and I need it only for images, so I wouldn't like to use WikEd just to get highlighting. mickit 21:39, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for writing and maintaining wikEd, and especially for its preview-including-references feature.

Unforgettableid (talk) 03:52, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Preview-including-references! As in... it shows you what your references will look like, when you are editing a section, even though they don't appear in the article until a different section. That sounds really useful! How do I make it show that preview? Yaris678 (talk) 20:06, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Try the button. Cacycle (talk) 15:34, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I tried so many things but not that. That is brilliant! Thanks. Yaris678 (talk) 21:16, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Cacycle,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 21:14, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the Chennai event in March, the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, or any other of our events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumanah (talk) 15:52, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Registration is now open for the Berlin hackathon. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form. Thanks! Done, thanks for that translation.. Cacycle (talk) 18:51, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hi.

this "jswarning" still refers to monobook - maybe it's time for a change? (either change to "vector", or just drop the "including monobook" altogether). Note that this message appears (also) when editing Special:Mypage/common.css and Special:Mypage/common.js, so any reference to a specific style is prolly out of place.

Bug fix

Cacycle, can you get in touch with me privately (csteipp on irc, or connect with me via email) about a potential security issue with one of your scripts? Thanks. CSteipp (talk) 17:24, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Diff engine

[edit]

Hello, I see that you maintain wdiff/wikEdDiff. As you know, Wikimedia projects as diff engine use wikidiff2, which is written in C. wikidiff2 has a couple annoying bugs which make many diffs useless: could you maybe give a look and contribute some suggestion or patch (see mw:Developer access, basically everyone can committ patches nowadays)? In particular, I've been told that bug 13462 could be trivially fixed, but this could give huge problems due to the poor performance in some edge cases (bug 22559), which is supposed to get much worse in that case. Nemo 23:15, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The big problem with the Wikipedia diff is that it is 1) line based and 2) does not recognize block moves. wikEdDiff is word based and detects block moves. In some edge cases, this sometimes leads to funny results, but in the majority of cases, is is much better suited for text content. Why not convert/recode wikEdDiff to wikidiff3? There is a good article about the algorithm and the code is commented. Unfortunately, I a really busy in IRL at the moment and cannot do this myself. Cacycle (talk) 20:17, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IE bug

[edit]

It seems that Internet Explorer users get diff's without text due to WikEdDiff. They have traced it to this change. VP/T post. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:43, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will check, thanks! Cacycle (talk) 10:08, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any progress on this? it is very frustrating when one has got used to using a tool, and then it is removed, or stops working. Spotting some diffs, e.g. spaces, in the standard diff is impossible, whilst others (e.g. minor puctuation changes) are almost impossible. Thanks Arjayay (talk) 09:03, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed in wikEdDiff 0.9.16b, thanks for reporting. Cacycle (talk)
Thanks for looking after this. And indeed, thanks for wikEdDiff -- it's indispensible. --Stfg (talk) 08:29, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks from me as well - I will report the fix at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) so others, who hve turned it off, know it is now working - Arjayay (talk) 07:50, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted material

[edit]

Being the author of this image File:Two moving spirals scroll pump.gif you might want to know that it is used on a commercial website: [7]. They don't mention you as the author. As you can see they even use the copyrighted wikipedia logo. The site belongs to [8]. I have mailed them, but a bit of help to tell them to clean up their act might help. There is an email address on that site for contacting them. --VanBurenen (talk) 08:20, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

wikEd

[edit]

The full conversation can be found here: User_talk:Cacycle/wikEd#Pre_tag_incompatibility_and_possibly_other_issues. In a nutshell:

  • wikEd has an issue with pre tags - PrimeHunter has been able to duplicate the issue I've had - that seemingly causes a Copy and Paste from a source with pre tags to ignore line breaks.
  • First identified as such when I was trying to Copy and Paste (to my .js) a user script from Reflinks. Rather than breaking into 8 lines as the source did, when I did a "Save", it saved it as one long line.
  • I've had the same issues with a Copy and Paste on any Infobox template. Those templates have pre tags in their coding.

Let me say that my Firefox browser is not causing me any other problems on Wikipedia.

I've been having other issues since Spring 2012, which I am now thinking are wikEd, and might be tied to the pre tag issue. I have just unchecked wikEd on my Gadgets, so I have yet to complete enough editing to see if wikEd is the cause of these. But it seems likely:

  • Spacing (inconsistent) - either one too many, or one not enough - seems to trigger malfunctions on insertions. To correct that, I either have to delete an extra space and put it up against the word to the left of it, or add an extra space. If one of those methods works, the other doesn't. And there's no consistency on the why of it.
  • Inserting a link from the icon on the Toolbar - sometimes it works, sometimes it's the Spacing issue
  • Inserting a citation from the drop-down Template menu in the Toolbar (Provelt is not affected by this).
  • Sometimes it works - sometimes it's the the Spacing issue
  • When it actually works and inserts a citation where I want, it jumps a space to the right before inserting the citation. I have to manually delete the blank space it inserted to the left of the citation.
  • Sometimes it just refuses to insert, and the pop up citation box only goes away with "Cancel"
  • Sometimes it jumps to the top of the section, and inserts the citation to the left of the "==" at the section heading
  • Paste - sporadic issues with Spacing, one too many or one not enough
  • Template:DYKproblem - This template has pre-tags. Spacing issue and consistent. This is put on a user's talk page to refer back to a nomination that has questions. Ideally, it automatically adds the section header and puts a message below that. In reality, it erroneously adds a space or two to the left of the section header, rather than two "==". This leaves the wording for a section header, but not formatted as a section. The work-around is to insert the template. Then insert my cursor in front of the template, even though I see no space there, and hit the Backspace twice.
  • Deleting characters/text (consistent issue) by tapping the keyboard "Delete" key . The first one or two deletions happen where they should - then it jumps to elsewhere on the page and deletes in another place.

This is my info, but PrimeHunter did not give his/her info:

  • wikEd version 0.9.105G (September 5, 2012)
  • Estimated onset of this issue - Spring 2012.
  • Windows XP
  • Firefox 16.0.2 17.0 as of Nov 20, 2012
  • I mostly use monobook, but this issue is on all skins.
  • Reflinks installed on common.js yesterday
  • The only other user script I have is on my modern.js, which is for the DYK Check. It's been there since March 2011, at least a year before this issue started happening.
  • I am not using Wikipedia Beta.

You know how Firefox is - a new issue of it happens every few weeks. These problems I've been having go back well over 6 months, so I don't even remember what release of Firefox I had then. Please contact me directly if you have questions or suggestions. . — Maile (talk) 00:23, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reporting. I will check into this as soon as I find some time. Unfortunately, I am a bit busy IRL at the moment... Cacycle (talk) 17:44, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. FYI - my Firefox just updated to 17.0, and the problems remain. When I did a strike through on the Firefox release number above, it did the strike through and then automatically jumped back up to the the line above it. — Maile (talk) 00:11, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help.
