Your Village Pump question

I'm not sure why the people who closed your question at the Village Pump didn't bother to take the two minutes needed to answer it, but

you can set your username in your user page, user talk page, etc. to lowercase by adding "{{lowercase title}}" to the top of the page. I already did so here, but I can't edit user pages so you'll have to be the one to add it there.
you can set your username in your signature to lowercase by visiting Special:Preferences and changing your signature to be a custom one (see wp:FANCYSIG).

Thanks for the help! I added the tag as you said but it's still not appearing with lowercase. I think it did for a moment but now it's gone. I'll look further into this. Wikipedia seems like going down in a rabbit hole so it'd take some time for me to figure out. Brishtibheja (talk) 09:13, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming you're on mobile, the pagename seems to be automatically replaced with your username without the User Talk: when being rendered, which seems to mess up both {{lowercase title}} and {{displaytitle}}. I'm not sure why the people who closed your question at the Village Pump didn't bother to take the two minutes needed to answer it - I think it was clear enough, so I'm not sure why you're not sure. It would have been a misuse of the page, as I stated. It would have distracted from correct uses of the page. Further, it would have failed to inform this editor and other newer editors about the Help Desk—responding "Here's your answer, but next time you might want to use WP:HD instead" would not have the same memory impact as requiring them to use WP:HD—so the adverse effect would have been greater than this single, isolated case. It may be difficult for you to see, but we were acting in this editor's longer-term interest. Short-term pain for long-term gain.

These points are more important than saving an editor the few clicks required to take the question to a more appropriate venue. Complain about bureaucracy all you like, but things are organized and separated by function for good reasons.
