[edit]What do you think of my new one? I got the idea from yours, though I completly recoded it. LINUXERIST@ 00:52, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm... I'll work with it later. I have not installed Wine on this computer yet. LINUXERIST@ 00:59, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, I tried it, but I'm not quite sure what to do. I know for one thing I need to change "grey" to "gray". Any other suggestions? LINUXERIST@ 19:40, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Circular number
[edit]I have made some edits to the article circular number that you started, and have put some comments on its talk page. It would be helpful if you can explain where the term circular number comes from - is it your own invention, or do you have a reference for this usage, which we can add to the article ? DYK wording for Yucca Mountain Johnny
[edit]I noticed you just changed the wording for Yucca Mountain Johnny's fact in DYK. Is there a reason you removed the bit about it being controversial? That's kind of the reason I thought it was interesting in the first place.
Also, you used the past tense "was", but I think "is" would be more appropriate, as the cartoon still exists. --JerryOrr 15:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I personally think the comparison to Joe Camel is compelling enough to be in the DYK blurb, but you're the Admin, so it's your prerogative. I do think you ought to change the tense, though, as I mentioned earlier. --JerryOrr 15:55, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Assume good faith
[edit]I didn't appreciate your comment in your edit to Wikipedia:Today's featured article/June 5, 2006: "did you even try looking at the image? it's full size is only 173px wide. the diagram is completely useless and uninformative. also, Raul654 said the image won't be changed again today, so leave it". If you'd been following along in the discussion, you'd know exactly why I selected that image. Please remember to assume good faith from your fellow editors, and please don't ever again order someone to "leave it." - Brian Kendig 17:24, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

- Example of a positive attack: BRIAN0918, I'm sick of you constantly making positive contributions to the encyclopedia! You're nothing but a do-gooding improver! BD2412 T 17:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- That's still negative. It has the word "to" in there. --Monotonehell 18:57, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Speaking of negative attacks. I'm sorry I couldn't help you out more with the recent FA Eye debarcle. I kept trying to leave more comments and arguments pro-WP's stance on such things but the server kept timeing out and so on. You did a mamoth job however. --Monotonehell 18:57, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

DYK questions
[edit]Brian0918 - I see that you are a very active contributor to DYK (and admin). Perhaps you could answer a question for me on process.
- If a nomination is made with a particular phrasing and a better phrasing is suggested, does the DYK staff use the better phrasing. Or, is the original nomination (top line) supposed to be edited to reflect the current phrasing?
Thanks. —ERcheck (talk) @ 00:24, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Value of DYK
[edit]Brian, Thanks for taking care of the DYK. You moved Richard K. Sorenson to the DYK template today and it generated traffic, a number of helpful edits, and a question on the talk page which spurred me to research and answer the question (Who were the other two survivors?). This was my first article on DYK and it has increased my appreciation for this Main Page feature. —ERcheck (talk) @ 01:25, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
User 137.154.16.31
[edit]Could you please consider blocking User:137.154.16.31 from editing wikipedia. He has vandalised several pages, most recently Daniel Carter, he has been warned numerous times but doesn't seem to respond to this. Thanks, Shudda talk 03:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Pando
[edit]Thanks for commenting on the Pando (Quaking Aspen) article. We are currently trying to have it achieve featured article status. Any input on its peer review would be helpful. Thank you again. Globeism 16:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Brian. Thanks for the help. I took a long time because it was my first time and I was still checking all the code carefully and stuff. I didn't choose your entry because I thought it should wait for the next update so that the picture could be used. I also pulled the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange out of sequence mainly because I know the people involved and I wouldn't have been around to do the next update, when it would have been roughly scheduled. Thanks for your help. Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 04:56, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Care to explain?
[edit]What's going on?.. --Ghirla -трёп- 15:31, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think it's fair to promote your own entry from the second to the first position at the expense of a superior entry. Also, I find your practice of heavily revising nominations once they are featured in the template rather disturbing. Please reflect that both authors and nominators may not like your gratuitous rephrasing. Nominations have sufficient exposure on Template talk:Did you know to discuss proposed changes there, rather than implement them single-handedly on Template:Did you know. Take care, Ghirla -трёп- 15:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- If you only fix grammatical or stylistic problems, as you claim, please find time to do so on Template talk:Did you know. Don't you think that even "grammatical or stylistic problems" may be subjective and their fixing controversial? As to your second argument, most nominators know DYK procedures too little to understand who changes their nominations and why. Cheers, Ghirla -трёп- 15:49, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]
Thanks for your note. The potentially short turn around time keeps it alive and fluid IMO and I really don't think it's necessary to rotate images within a DYK featured cycle, and certainly not without discussion beforehand. But I appreciate what you were trying to do, thanks for the explanation. --Cactus.man ✍ 07:02, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Featured picture promotion
[edit]Your Featured picture candidate has been promoted Your nomination for featured picture status, Image:San Francisco in ruin edit2.jpg, gained a consensus of support, and has been promoted. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates.

[edit]Order?
[edit]Just curious... why was the order changed here? Was it a formatting thing, so the bullets wouldn't be atop one another, or was there some other motive? Thanks. --You Know Who (Dark Mark) 17:33, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough... I just couldn't determine the purpose of it. Oh well... Thanks. :-) --You Know Who (Dark Mark) 17:38, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
The transparent background was deliberate change. Why do you object to that? —David Levy 00:14, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- Anyone who has a custom skin with moderately dark background, or anything darker, is going to see a mess. I have a black background, and all I see are a few white specks where some bones show up. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-11 00:17
- Thanks for the explanation. I've changed the background to solid white. —David Levy 00:23, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Grammar Nazism
[edit]I like language to evolve and support coining new words or, in this case, coming up with alternate definitions. But I am guilty of grammar nazism from time to time, too. I like keeping the old rules for a sense of basic structure (different from, not different than). In my opinion, a distinction exists between innovative usage and erroneous usage. And I am a physics student, too. Teply 17:45, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Very nice article! I'd like to make a quick request and some more general comments:
- Could you give translations of the Ducth references' titles?
- Same for the Latin titles?
The aticle stop shorts in the 18th century, which leaves either two centuries of history of thesect unexplored, or fails to explain its disappearance. Circeus 23:49, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Alignment issues
[edit]Hmm... are this and [1] really aligned differently for you? The only difference I see is a little less blank space above and below the Wikinews footer in the second one. What browser are you using (I'm using Firefox)?--Pharos 02:53, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Protecting POTD rows
[edit]Hello, Brian0918! I noticed you protected a series of POTD rows, which appear on the Main Page. There's no need to protect so far in advance; I, along with a few other admins, regularly take care of protecting the main page images, templates and pages. We usually protect no more than 24 hours in advance, leaving editing as open as long as possible. I understand your protection of the POTD rows, similarly to how the FA templates are protected in advance, but the POTD text hasn't been "approved", per say, and it's best we leave it as open as possible. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:23, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. I've been travelling for a few days and I guess no one else noticed that it wasn't protected. However, I should be able to take care of things from now on. In the future, I'll also protect a day or two in advance if I know I won't be available. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
