Media Viewer RfC arbitration case - extension of closure dates

Hello, you are receiving this message because you have commented on the Media Viewer RfC arbitration case. This is a courtesy message to inform you that the closure date for the submission of evidence has been extended to 17 August 2014 and the closure date for workshop proposals has been extended to 22 August 2014, as has the expected date of the proposed decision being posted. The closure dates have been changed to allow for recent developments to be included in the case. If you wish to comment, please review the evidence guidance. For the Arbitration Committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 10:00, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Fanaticism

You're right, I could have introduced that with a little more grace. I was (am) still a bit miffed about being threatened with administrative sanctions for removing (to me) superfluous verbiage without any policy that requires it. It was certainly not directed at you. Other than that I thought it was a good - fun - discussion. Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 17:39, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Nah. I knew what you meant. Not everyone will, in situations like that, always, though. And even if they do, it may be easier, or more expedient for them, to pretend they don't, and try to use it against you. That's all I was saying, really. That's the nature of the place, unfortunately. All is good. Glad you stopped by. Begoontalk 17:46, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

List of banned users MfD

Hi Begoon. Thanks for taking the time to comment on option 1 of the proposals for change at the list of banned users. It's clear that there's sufficient support that it will not be SNOW closed, so I've listed it at MfD - Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:List of banned users (6th nomination). I thought it appropriate to keep you informed. WormTT(talk) 09:49, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Funny

May I ask why you described my comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:List of banned users (6th nomination) as "lovely", and tell me what things I have said that are in your opinion "funnier'? Also, I resent your label of "bus-spotter" which is unfair and based solely on one of my interests. Rcsprinter123 (chinwag) @ 15:25, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Always nice to see folks follow what is said elsewhere. Yes, I did think your comments were lovely. Sorry if you didn't like anything I said there, but I'm not really interested in having a discussion about it here. Thanks for dropping by though. Cheers. Begoontalk 15:58, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Ignore Neotarf and the rest of the morality police. You've got him/her pegged as a serial objectionist. I'm surprised they haven't urbaned dictionaried your name yet. I wonder if they did an UD search on "Tarf"? Hilarious. Two kinds of porkMakin'Bacon 05:00, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, it's ok. It's the ridiculousness on both sides of that argument, and the "civil" POV pushing, and the "ever so clever" assassinations of opinion, that have made we not want to be here any more. This place used to be about more than that. Lately, not so much. Begoon, Jehochman asked you not to edit their posts, there's not need to be rude in response to the request. The case has been quite collegial, please let's not stop that. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 23:36, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

You're right. I was unnecessarily abrasive. I was actually apologising on JEH's talk page while you were posting this, before I saw it. Begoontalk 23:39, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Global bans

These are a different issue altogether, and the ones that I know about I 100% endorse. Dougweller (talk) 15:21, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

As do I. I haven't seen a bad global ban yet, and generally rejoice in the sudden willingness from the WMF to help us out and deal with the bad users we have been unable/unwilling/incapable of dealing with ourselves. Just felt relevant enough to mention, although off-topic. Begoontalk 16:28, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Invitation

A gummi bear holding a sign that says "Thank you"
Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Begoon,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you posted to a feedback page for VisualEditor. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work well for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:56, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Whatamidoing (WMF) I was, sadly, unsurprised that clicking the link gave me this error:
Sorry, an unexpected error occurred. Bf3q933ej7
Nevertheless, I was able to complete the survey, and I hope my response was helpful/received at all (hard to tell with the errors).
Done, anyway, I think - though I'm likely wrong, as usual. Begoontalk 16:10, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
If you put your name in the last field (about half the people did), then I could look up whether that was added to any of the responses. Otherwise, we'll just have to hope for the best.
Would you like me to pass along the errors to the Qualtrics people? They'd probably want browser/OS information. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:51, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Whatamidoing (WMF) - https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_54k8qFPuloXjEq1 wasn't a unique url for me, then? If I go there now, as I just did, it says "You have already taken this survey", so I'll assume it worked. I should have checked that before, I guess. Browser Chrome 41.0.2272.101 m, OS XP Pro SP3. Please do let me know what "Qualtrics" discover. As, partially, a software guy I'm always interested in that kind of thing. Begoontalk 17:30, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll pass that along. If I get a substantive response back, I'll pass it back to you.
It's the same link for everyone who received that message, and the responses are anonymized. We can't see IP addresses or anything like that in the results (which makes my life easier: I get to skip an entire list of complications from our privacy tigers). However, their website sets cookies or somehow tracks people, so that you can't take the same survey over and over and over again (well, not very easily, anyway. I suspect that it wouldn't be too difficult to defeat. However, I can't imagine that anyone would care enough to do that, and it would be kind of obvious if 50 invitations resulted in 200 oddly similar responses). Question about Commons

Hey Begoon! Don-Don is up to it again, uploading what he thinks are "good files" to the NBC logo. I do have a question and that is can files on Commons be deleted like they do here on the English Wikipedia? The page is being filled up terribly with his constant uploading of the file. I wasn't sure if they can as I'm not really familiar with Commons. I did revert his most recent versions because the NBC peacock is not that bright in colors. Thanks, Corky | Chat? 04:20, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Well, I had a quick look, and at least they are not the raster-filled bloated abominations he was uploading in the past. It's still a problem if they are wrong or not an improvement, though. I wouldn't worry too much about the number of files in history - so long as the current file is correct. I'm not an admin there, so other than having the same conversation I already had about overwriting files that are in use with inferior versions I'm not sure what I could do. If it becomes a huge issue, you'd need to take it to an admin noticeboard, and show diffs for the occasions he's been asked not to do this in the past. Sorry I can't be much more help, but do let me know if you start such a discussion, since I would probably comment. Begoontalk 05:26, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Hey, no problem. Thanks for your reply. I might start a discussion, but I'll do some thinking. I will certainly let you know if I do start a discussion. Corky | Chat? 15:36, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Honestly, I'd probably leave it for now. It's only a couple of new uploads, you reverted to the "right version", and he seems to be trying to learn, as evidenced by the better technical quality of the files, even if the appearance is obviously wrong. It's infuriating, yes, but while it stays at this low level it's just a minor annoyance. Hopefully the learning curve will accelerate on its own when he sees the reversions. Take action only if it doesn't would be my recommendation. There are still some embedded rasters in that latest version, but I don't have the time, or inclination to recreate the whole file. That's the "best" version of a mess, for now. Begoontalk 15:43, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Corky | Chat? 17:15, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Sock detection

I wasn't sure if you were encouraging me to take it VPI or saying that you were going to. I probably don't have the initiative or drive to pursue any kind of site-wide changes for anything, knowing that the chances of success are rather bleak and any successful change is only after hundreds of hours of someone being the driving force. CorporateM (Talk) 19:19, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

That makes two of us, then. I was probably attempting to be ironic. Begoontalk 03:12, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

AN Unban Discussion

It seems like your responses to those opposing the unban at AN are starting to get in to badgering territory. As the discussion currently appears to be going in favor of your proposal, it may be better to step back from it a bit. Just my 2c, but I think your hurting the proposal at least as much as your helping it with your last few comments. Monty845 00:57, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Dear Begoon,

Thank you for your advices at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Wikicology, I'm so grateful. However, I removed the possible offensive contents on my user page and the big, pink box on my talk page. I never thought that those contents could be sending a wrong signal to other editors. I wouldn't have notice it without you. Thank you so much, Begoon. Wikigyt@lk to M£ 14:41, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

I noticed. Thank you. It was quite unwelcoming, giving users lots of reasons why they should "go away" rather than talk to you. I updated my comment at the RFA. I'm sorry I haven't been able to support you this time, but another year of good progress on the matters pointed out there would probably address my concerns. Good luck. Begoontalk 14:48, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:07, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

ACE2015

Hi Begoon. Now it's over, while we're waiting for the results I can now expand on some of the thoughts I expressed during the campaign. Whether you supported or opposed my candidacy is of course entirely up to you - important is that you participated in the process. If one looks very closely, one will see that the questioners got the answers they deserve; there is no need to kowtow to them to get their vote. Whether or not I am offered a seat on the Committee is immaterial - I'm not sure I ever wanted to stand in the first place. If I am elected, I will concern myself with the day-to-day work of the Committee. If not, I will seek to bring about reforms of the electoral process, mainly focusing on the need for questions and voter guides to be at least objective and kept free of gender related and other socio-political barnstorming. I will be looking to you for support, and once again, thank you for taking part in this year's ACE. Regards, --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:26, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Kudpung. Above you say: "If I am elected, I will concern myself with the day-to-day work of the Committee." This surprises me somewhat, given that you earlier said: "I don't think it will be possible to overturn the election, but it's what should be done". I was surprised you did not withdraw at that point, given that belief. Since you believe that the result should be overturned, surely you would not feel able to accept a seat based on that result, if you were to be 'offered' one? I'm not sure how you could, in those circumstances. Regards. Begoontalk 10:39, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
I may well decline to take up my seat in the event of my being elected, but it won't have anything whatsoever to do with the reason you wish for. It would be because I would not be prepared to sit together with the others who get elected. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:46, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
I see. Thanks. Just to be clear, my comment did not "wish for" anything - I was merely seeking to understand whether and how you might feel able to accept a seat resulting from an election which you believe should be "overturned", because I don't personally see how that would be tenable. We all set our own moral compasses, though, and my comments were enquiries, to better understand your position, not criticisms, or even suggestions as to your course of action. I can quite understand if you took it differently, since I clearly did not support you in the election, but not everything needs to be binary black/white. Incidentally, on a personal note, I was actually quite disappointed that examining your recent history led me to opine as I did in my guide, as I do remember a Kudpung I could easily have supported, not that many years ago. I touched on that in the guide, too. Regards. Begoontalk 05:14, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
