Imagine Chrissie Hynde, (not Rush Limbaugh)
- ...I went back to Ohio
- But my pretty countryside
- It had been paved down the middle
- By a government that had no pride
- The farms of Ohio
- Had been replaced by shopping malls
- And Muzak filled the air
- From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls
- Ay, oh, where did you go, Ohio?...

Ref desk proposal
Hi @Baseball Bugs:, I don't know if you've been following the recent threads on the ref desk talk page, but based on some review of that material, I have a simple proposal that I'd like your feedback on before I shop it to the whole group. It's very simple: For a trial period (1 month?), we agree to not remove or hat any questions for reasons of seeking medical/legal advice (and perhaps extend to include requests for opinion). Rather than a free-for-all, we first respond with boilerplate or a template, something along the lines of this:
“ | Hello, and welcome to the Wikipedia Reference desk. Your question seems to be seeking medical or legal advice. We do not give this type of advice [links to guidelines, header, etc]. Our goal is to provide users with links and citations to WP:RS. Remember, WP:ANYONE, and we can not provide any guarantees (links to general and medical disclaimers,WP:Wikipedia_is_not_a_reliable_source) | ” |
Would that seem ok to you? The thing is, we really don't get that many medical legal questions, and I like how this puts us in the position to police ourselves as respondents, rather than posters. As I see it, this proposal is consistent with our guidelines, and it might forestall some debates, because the template doesn't disrupt the regular flow of the desks the way a deletion or hatting can. Thoughts? SemanticMantis (talk) 16:59, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Just curious...
...Did you redact your post (somewhere between here and here). I know that I saw it (haven't hallucinated since the early '70s), and can't think of an edit conflict scenario that could explain this mystery. As I recall, it wasn't anything particularly offensive, just a somewhat snarky reiteration of your previous position. Anyways, I have no intention of making a BFD, but would have appreciated some sort of redaction notification, or something such that my subsequent post wouldn't seem out-of-place. Clover
I don't know for sure what your grandfathers thought about clover, but I know clover was usually intentionally included in lawn grass mixes, prior to the advent of broad leaf herbicides. As a legume, it aids in fertilizing the soil, and it also reduced the need to mow lawns. So there's plenty of things to like about it. I read an interesting account of how the company that developed the first such product was concerned that people wouldn't use it, because it would kill their clover be bad for lawns. The clever marketers then decided it would be easier to convince people that clover was bad than to find an herbicide that would not kill grass or clover. Some of this is mentioned at clover, but there are no good refs for that material. I can't find the article with some brief searching but I thought you might be interested in story :) SemanticMantis (talk) 14:57, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know. What I know about clover is that it was a nuisance in the yard when I was a kid, primarily because honeybees liked it, so going barefoot in the yard was not recommended. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 15:16, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
My user name?
Apparently back in 2009 there was some discussion in some deep dark Wikipedia admin area about my username: [2]
Thank you for letting me know on my user page. Sorry it took 6 years to reply, I haven't had time to edit in Wikipedia lately.
The thing is, it's NOT just the former President of Costa Rica's name... it's MY real name too! [3]
Which rarely leads to confusion, except the short time that I had the email address oscar@arias.com, which caused me to have to forward some emails to the actual president of Costa Rica (oscar@arias.cr). He actually sent me an email thanking me personally for forwarding his email, which was pretty cool! :)
At any rate, it seems that after that discussion I (thankfully) can still can use my username (I don't edit much these days), it does sort of irritate me that I almost lost my username that I have been using since 2002 (Heck I created the Wikipedia entry for Dokken with that username!)... just because some former politician has my same name.
I mean how many real people might be named "John Tyler" or "Andrew Johnson" (19th century US Presidents), I doubt that anyone with those names is trying to fool anyone. :)
Heck, I never even heard of the "Costa Rican" Oscar Arias until he won the Nobel Peace Prize! :)
At any rate, sorry for ranting in your talk page... but I believe that the original discussion page is closed.
It seems that you were on the "right" side of this issue, so thank you!

Impersonation
A troll named Baseball thugs (talk · contribs) posted to the Miscellaneous Reference Desk and is evidently impersonating you. Reported for questionable user name. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:53, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Wow, that is the epitome of shite-trolling, as in making a fake name that isn't even hidden (like changing the first B to an 8 in the account name and then copying your signature style for the markup) is the sort of thing you see in disputes with hotheads where the hothead has become such a sore loser that they've resorted to using childish variations on their opponent's name in posting. That is just too terrible for words and is not even funny. It's painful. I don't wish for bans often, but hopefully the master account is banned for that complete and total failure in trolling and WP:CIR violations. Ref desks
I've been staying out of the useless "discussions" on the ref-desks talk page, but I have to say that crap like this is completely uncalled for. You seem to have taken on the position of the principal Medeis apologist, and that's not a position that, in my opinion, is completely defensible. Let Medeis speak for her(?)self. You seem to feel a need to run your mouth (i.e., fingers) at WT:RD, WP:ANI, or wherever far in excess of what might be helpful or enlightening; please stop and think before you type. Deor, perhaps you could provide some diffs and policies on the basis of which I need to apologize for anything? Bugs stands up for the principle of innocent until proven guilty. I have gotten to the point of simply not engaging with scolds, nannies, and would-be inquisitors on whom the burden of proof for their attacks lies. Bugs doesn't need to defend me, but he does seem to care for due process and the principles of the American Bill of Rights.
In the meantime we have non-contributors to the desks leading bizarre campaigns of inuendo, and posting things like this utterly disgusting personal attack (blowing up a target with his hands raised!) on their talk pages:
[BUGS DETECTED] [TARGET AIMING] [TARGET LOCKED] [NOBODY REPLIES] .---------------. .---------------. .---------------. .----------------. | o | | | | | \ o / | | \`. || .'/ | | /( )\ | | -- + -- | | --(+)-- | |--- *IGNORE* ---| |______/_\______| | | | |______/|\______| |_ _/_'_||_'_\_ _| '---------------' '---------------' '---------------' '----------------' --Guy Macon 03:08, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
How much effort was put into that, rather than answering ref desk questions? Where is your outrage, or even your curiosity over that? Where is Robert McClenon's, to whom the comment was addressed? Guy Macon and Robert McClenon, among others, contribute nothing but innuendo, along the lines of Joseph McCarthy, with allegations and judgments, but not a whiff of evidence, proof, or diffs.
- Where is your outrage at this?
At long last, have you left no sense of decency? Have any of you innuendo slingers any diffs? Any principles? Any decency? Go start an ANI this very second if you have a reason to do so. If not, get to the business of answering questions at the ref desk, or drop the inquisition. μηδείς (talk) 23:32, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Recent Post being Hatted
Hi, BB, Regarding the recent thread about the use of the word 'So', most of which has been hatted, I was considering hatting your post about who did it, not out of any bad intentions against you (because I don't have any), but just for the sake of protest, because I actually believe (forgive me if I am wrong), that the entire section was relevant, as we were talking about speaking habits which annoy us, and jokes on here are acceptable when written in small script. As for the 'ill-informed' part of the hatted header, BenRG should explain just why he thinks it is ill-informed, because as far as I am concerned, there was factual information in there, although presented in a joking fashion. Can you agree? I won't hat your post, but I just would like you to know that I really am wondering if the hatters are getting too 'hatter-happy' (like 'trigger-happy'). Ref desk participation
Hi BB, recently you said this on the ref desk talk page -"Would there be a way of expanding the potential pool of answerers" - I 100% agree with what I think you're getting at - that getting more respondents and more perspectives would help our little corner of WP.
Anyway, the only ideas I have to work towards this are:
- Get all regulars to get out the word. Ideally, this could be a focused campaign, e.g. during one week, we all tell our real-life friends, our Facebook, Twitter, or any other online venues to come check out the ref desk.
- Getting our link moved up higher on the main page. Currently it is third from the bottom of "real" links (not counting sister projects, other languages, etc) - I imagine moving it up would be hard, but again, if several of our editors took part and pleaded the case, it might be possible.
- Similar to above, but maybe get the ref desk associated/ involved with DYK - those get a lot of hits, and some of the things that get mentioned on the ref desks are probably worthy of DYK. But I don't think DYK would want to link to a ref desk thread...

I suggest you post this new bill which gets rid of the domestic spying without a warrant. Words and their meaning
Like your confusion over the meaning of "homophobia", Bugs, you've shown by your comments about "homicide" on WP:ANI that you don't seem to understand how the English language actually works.
The most obvious thing is to point out that prefixes and suffixes (like "homo/homi" and "cide") are NOT governed by fixed rules maintained by some authority. Secondly, even given generally observed rules as to the meanings of certain prefixes and suffixes, actual usage -- whether intentional on the part of the coiner, definitional drift, or simply by being idioms -- determines actual meanings. Finally, for actual legal terms, those ARE given specific definitions which may or may not match "logical" combinations, your impressions, or even popular usage. For the last one, I'll point you to the Cornell University School of Law:
- Homicide is when one human being causes the death of another. Not all homicide is murder, as some killings are manslaughter, and some are lawful, such as when justified by an affirmative defense, like insanity or self-defense.
This is Wikipedia, Bugs: words mean what reliable sources say they mean, not what you'd like them or how you've work them out in your mind to mean. If you're going to proclaim you understand the meaning of word, you need to check first. --Calton | Talk 08:21, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

- Without affirmation that Bugs doesn't seem to know how the English language works (that's a bit strong, imo), he is right for 99% of the time that the word homicide is used. My input here, to be helpful, is that I have seen the death certificates of state-executed convicts which are correctly labeled "homicide" as the cause of death. It is rare but does affirm that homicide does not always mean murder.

- What I'm against overall is editors who do absolutely nothing to build content on here but exist to either preach at other editors and issue sanctimonious comments on how they should behave, or people who troll forums just to attack others or belittle their work at every opportunity. If that means being part of a cliche or cadre in defending people against it, so be it. But I remain adamant that wikipedia would be much better off without people like you and Tarc. At the end of the day this is an encyclopedia, anything or anybody which doesn't contribute to it is usually not worth the time or heartache over. You're being a twat [7]. I have told you that I have nothing further to say on the matter but still, you persist. I have assumed, in the absence of one, and because it requires a little pride for you to say so, that you are trying to say sorry for trying to make a drama out of nothing whilst only armed with one half of the story [8]. Even your pal Chillum wasn't interested in you [9]. Apology updated
I've updated my talk page from April 2013 in light of your recent withdrawal of that apology.
Have to say how saddened I was to see how far you would go, even to the extent of shredding your own character, integrity and reputation, and casting great doubts on your maturity, just to avoid facing the facts about an entirely unrelated matter that occurred 26 months later.
I have never in my life seen a more clear cut case of "playing the man, not the ball". Shocking and shameful behaviour. What ever happened to principles? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 00:09, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
You.
It is hard to believe how incredibly stupid you are. Stupid as a stone that the other stones make fun of. So stupid that you have traveled far beyond stupid as we know it and into a new dimension of stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid cubed. Trans-stupid stupid. Stupid collapsed to a singularity where even the stupons have collapsed into stuponium. Stupid so dense that no intelligence can escape. Singularity stupid. Blazing hot summer day on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one minute than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid. It cannot be possible that anything in our universe can really be this stupid. This is a primordial fragment from the original big stupid bang. A pure extract of stupid with absolute stupid purity. Stupid beyond the laws of nature. I must apologize. I can't go on. This is my epiphany of stupid. After this experience, you may not hear from me for a while. I don't think that I can summon the strength left to mock your moronic opinions and malformed comments about boring trivia or your other drivel. Duh.
The only thing worse than your logic is your manners. I have snipped away most of your of what you wrote, because, well ... it didn't really say anything. Your attempt at constructing a creative flame was pitiful. I mean, really, stringing together a bunch of insults among a load of babbling was hardly effective... Maybe later in life, after you have learned to read, write, spell, and count, you will have more success. True, these are rudimentary skills that many of us "normal" people take for granted that everyone has an easy time of mastering. But we sometimes forget that there are "challenged" persons in this world who find these things to be difficult. If I had known that this was true in your case then I would have never have exposed myself to what you wrote. It just wouldn't have been "right." Sort of like parking in a handicap space. I wish you the best of luck in the emotional, and social struggles that seem to be placing such a demand on you.
P.S.: You are hypocritical, greedy, violent, malevolent, vengeful, cowardly, deadly, mendacious, meretricious, loathsome, despicable, belligerent, opportunistic, barratrous, contemptible, criminal, fascistic, bigoted, racist, sexist, avaricious, tasteless, idiotic, brain-damaged, imbecilic, insane, arrogant, deceitful, demented, lame, self-righteous, byzantine, conspiratorial, satanic, fraudulent, libelous, bilious, splenetic, spastic, ignorant, clueless, EDLINoid, illegitimate, harmful, destructive, dumb, evasive, double-talking, devious, revisionist, narrow, manipulative, paternalistic, fundamentalist, dogmatic, idolatrous, unethical, cultic, diseased, suppressive, controlling, restrictive, malignant, deceptive, dim, crazy, weird, dyspeptic, stifling, uncaring, plantigrade, grim, unsympathetic, jargon-spouting, censorious, secretive, aggressive, mind-numbing, arassive, poisonous, flagrant, self-destructive, abusive, socially-retarded, puerile, pinguid, and Generally Not Good.

Monkey butt
Hey BB. I just wanted to make sure that you were cool with this. If my humor is off-key I'd rather retract the attempt at a joke and apologize now than deal with it later. Though we disagreed over the appropriateness of a question last month, I'm not aware of being in a feud with you (or with anyone else on WP, for that matter). Let me make it clear that I am not asking a loaded question along the lines of, "Are you cool with this or do you have a poor sense of humor?", but am instead readily willing to accept that the humor there was unacceptable if you so suggest. In any case, I assume that it is clear that the "Monkey butt" subject line was not, in fact, intended as an epithet, and that saying so was only in riposte to Robert McClenon. -- ToE 22:39, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

This is what I was trying to say,
You always protect me, that time when I was talking about Christianity, they would've eaten me, you saved me, by pulling up an awesome idea, which made sense too. This is not the only instance you've protected me, every-time someone says something bad about me, you've protected me. I do the same for user:StuRat now, by learning it of you.
I called you my bro, no matter what I do, right or wrong, I expected you to always protect me... But what did you do? You shouted at me for no reason, and backed someone who was performing satanic activity. That's why I was upset...

Obituary question on Humanities Reference Desk
Hi. Thanks for your input. That thread has become quite long. I posted a question to you, but you might not have noticed it (as the thread has gotten lengthy). My question to you states: @Baseball Bugs: Sorry, I still don't follow. You said "she is not the mother of the widow". Now, you amend that to "she is not the mother of the widower". Who is the widower here? I think (?) you meant to say "surviving husband". No? The mother-in-law to the deceased woman/wife (the subject of the obituary) would be the mother to the surviving husband of the deceased woman/wife (the subject of the obituary). Where is a widower coming into play? I am totally lost. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:26, 11 July 2015 (UTC). If possible, can you answer that question over on the thread at that page? It's driving me nuts. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 07:08, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- The widower is the surviving husband. Widow means woman, widower means man, typically. So if the deceased wife is survived by two mothers-in-law, one and only one of them will be the biological mother of the surviving husband. But as noted in the case of adoptions, one could consider both the biological and adoptive mother of the surviving husband as "two mothers-in-law" of the deceased. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:14, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

My impression is that the editor behind CPB was trying on a new, more negative persona, probably feeling bored of being Mr. Civility -- but was hesitant enough about taking the step to wait a number of months after creating the account before stepping off the line; and even then they felt compelled to ask permission from ArbCom. BMK (talk) 02:29, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm curious to know where he openly stated his identity - because this subject has a deja vu aspect about it, but I couldn't find a reference in the incident archive.
- The diffs have been rev del'd by an admin.Since CPB said on his talk page he wanted to use the account to edit contentious subjects like Gamergate, climate change, and the Tea Party, I put discretionary sanction warnings for those topics on his talk page. Guy Macon responded with a comment that said: "You might want to wait until I make an edit related to gamergate before warning me for editing gamergate". (emphasis added) Eleven hours later he corrected it to "You might want to wait until I make an edit related to gamergate before warning him for editing gamergate." and a minute later to "You might want to wait untilhe makes an edit related to gamergate before warning him for editing gamergate." Fifteen minutes later, CPB cleared the talk page. GM tried to write it off as a typo, but it seemed clear to me that he was editing with the wrong account and didn't realize it. NE Ent -- whom I rarely agree with -- had the same impression. GM later opened the outing complaint on AN/I, and then made some sort of deal with Swarm, the result of which was that Swarm rev del'd all the edits and the AN/I thread. BMK (talk) 23:41, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Did you happen to capture any screen-prints of the evidence? Either way, for an editor to claim outing, when he has outed himself, is a pretty brassy thing to do. But now, "officially", there's no evidence. So the best thing is keep an eye on the "suspected" sock and make sure it behaves itself. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:15, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- No, I have the text, which I copied down, but I did not think of getting a screenshot. There is this remnant of the AN/I thread (because of the way Swarm went about it: moving it to an archive and then rev deling it there). What I hope is that part of the deal between Swarm and Guy Macon was that GM would drop the CPB account, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't try the same stunt with another "legitimate" alternate account. BMK (talk) 00:22, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- Even having the text is useful. If someone wants to use a second account within the rules, this wasn't the way to do it. Then again, why would anyone want to deal with hot-button issues like Gamergate, unless they're looking to use WP as a battleground - which is also against the rules. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:27, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- Exactly the way I saw it. BMK (talk) 00:30, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- As it stands, the sockmaster behind CypherPunk knows all eyes are watching for any mis-steps. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:34, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- I rather doubt we'll be seeing edits from that account anytime soon. BMK (talk) 01:14, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Question
Did you insert a snarky although probably accurate comment about assume good faith into an already closed discussion of a stupid proposal at WP:ANI? Robert McClenon (talk) 01:33, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- The editor's comment was the snarky one. My comment was merely a response. If you want to delete my comment, then delete his also. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:37, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- And to reiterate, whenever I see someone crying "AGF", it's usually from an editor who's acting in bad faith. (Though not in this particular case.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, the original poster of that absurd suggestion probably was acting in bad faith, as in probably a sock of a banned user. From your standpoint, I see that AGF often does come from bad faith users. As a dispute resolution volunteer, I often have to remind participants to AGF when I am neutral, so that sometimes the reminder to AGF is made by someone who is neutral. I do see that the original poster is banned from your talk page. Both comments were snarky. If they were both made after the discussion was boxed, then they should not have been made in a boxed discussion. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:49, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Now that you've confirmed my suspicions, should I allow that other editor's comment to stand unchallenged? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:54, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Rich told you to assume good faith while the thread was still open. You replied inside the box after the thread was closed. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:07, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

FYI
Hello BB. I hope you are well. I saw your reply to the IP about the Magnificent Seven Ride on the entertainment ref desk and I wanted to let you know that this is a person based in Northern Ireland whose editing has been problematic (some feel that the person is a disturbed individual) for months now. They have been an a mission to remove the term rape from various TV and film articles. It got worse when they expanded their editing to the Dakota War of 1862 here You will note the wording is almost the same as the post you responded to. If you check the edit history of the list of IPs we have been keeping here User talk:109.151.65.218 you will see more of the same as well as noting how long the problem has been going on. I stopped responding as I felt it was a "don't feed their obsession" situation but that is just me and you are free to deal with them in whatever manner you wish. I just wanted to make you aware of the situation. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 05:43, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Need assistance on Elvis related articles
I have checked some archived conversations on the article, Elvis Presley,[13] concerning User:Onefortyone, with his same "Elvis died - on toilet" theories. Can you consider having opinion on these two articles, where he continued to add this? They are Graceland and Toilet-related injuries and deaths, discussions at Talk:Graceland#Issues and Talk:Toilet-related injuries and deaths#Issues. Prior extensive discussion can be also found at this Enforcement report and Reliable sources noticeboard. Excelse (talk) 11:03, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
