Thank you for improving articles in November! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:41, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
I uploaded pics of a trip that was a 10-day celebration of a 16 November event, but the day was also when a dear friend died. We sang Hevenu shalom aleichem at his funeral yesterday, and it was good. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:45, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
Global renamer tips
[edit]Hey @DreamRimmer,
I would like to start contributing to rename requests and found that I had to apply for the rights at Meta Wiki. While browsing through the previous successful requests, I found yours.
As a present global renamer, what advice would you give me if I wish to apply for that right. What experience should I gain, where can I contribute before applying, and anything else you would like to suggest me, especially as I am not a present admin. Below is my user toolbox for easily browsing through my contributions.
Thanks for your time! ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:13, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Bunnypranav: I don't have any specific tips. You can go through the old requests on Meta to get an idea. Generally, users trust if the candidate is an admin on any wiki and has experience with username policies. I'd be happy to support your request if you demonstrate a strong understanding of username policies. A good way to start would be clerking at WP:CHUS and reporting username violations at WP:UAA. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:25, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response. I tried browsing through WP:CHUS but there is barely anything to manually clerk. I believe that existing accounts are reported by the bot clerk. I have one report at UAA, which was blocked by an admin, and will definately report more if found. So, wondering if there is anything else to gain experience and trust. ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:28, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- I understand that CHU venues don't require much help from human clerks. To demonstrate your understanding of username policies, you could start by reporting username violations at UAA. If you are interested in helping out in other areas of the wiki, you can explore tasks that align with your interests here. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:37, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice, hope to apply for renamer soon. ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:38, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- My advice would be to report at least 250 actionable username violations at UAA before applying. Applying directly and facing opposition votes could be discouraging. Just a friendly tip, since this is a very sensitive permission and their standards for support are quite high. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:46, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for giving a number to work on. (Note:I meant I'll apply after some experience in my previous comment) ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:48, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

GalaxyBot & Quarry query
[edit]Hello, DreamRimmer,
I'm not sure what's up but I was working with today's SDZeroBot G13 list (6/1/24) and found around 15 drafts in the 01:00 UTC hour whose last edit was Citation bot and whose last human edit dated back through the month of May, one all of the way back to May 5th. Then there was a draft that should have showed up whose last bot edit was by User:JJMC89 bot and I don't know if this bot was on your list. But this is a lot of drafts for the system to have missed.
I'm not sure what the problem could be here as the bot/query generally works but lately, I've noticed a few drafts that are eligible that haven't shown up when I looked at the GalaxyBot report or when I ran the Quarry query. Is it because six months ago was May 31st and we have no Nov. 31st? I don't want you to "pull" GalaxyBot because while it is not perfect, it's not reporting any drafts that are NOT eligible, it's just missing ones that are. I'd give you some draft links but because you're not an admin, you can't look at the deleted page histories.
Any way, I thought I'd let you know. I hope you are otherwise have a great weekend! Liz Read! Talk! 01:04, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- And just came across Draft:Royrf whose last edit was Citation bot and whose last human edit was March 24, 2024! So this one should have appeared back in October when the query was created. Liz Read! Talk! 01:11, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Liz, Would you mind temporarily restoring a few drafts in my userspace? You can delete them again after I have checked their edit history. – DreamRimmer (talk) 01:16, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Draft:Royrf wasn't shown because it didn't have an AfC template. There are hundreds of six-month-old drafts without an AfC template. If we could delete drafts that don't have an AfC template but do have the {{Drafts moved from mainspace}} template, that would be great since Wikipedia isn't meant to be a permanent host for these drafts. – DreamRimmer (talk) 04:58, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Well, this is awkward. Maybe you should discuss this with User:SD0001 because with SDZeroBot, which is our primarily G13 list, every draft page comes up on the G13 soon list, whether or not there is an AFC template. The AFC template is only important if it appears on a User page, like a sandbox. Then that User page is G13 eligible. But we've been deleting all draft pages without edits for six months and it's been like this since September 2020. I think this is also in-line with WP:G13 guidelines which just specify "Draft namespace".
- It's almost 1 am here so I can get you those restored drafts in the morning (my time at least). But a couple of hours ago, GalaxyBot had a report listing 19 expiring drafts so maybe we are caught up. Liz Read! Talk! 08:53, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- I have updated the query to include all bots, which is why 19 drafts were reported. Since SDZeroBot does not exclude bot edits, there is no issue with that report. However, reporting all types of drafts while excluding bot edits might not be appropriate. This is because, in some drafts, authors have used citation bot, and these drafts are not part of any AfC category. It is likely that the citation bot was run on individual pages, meaning the bot edit would count as a manual edit because the author initiated the citation bot on each individual draft. – DreamRimmer (talk) 09:11, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, here are some of the drafts that your query/bot missed from last night: Draft:Alex Cara, Draft:Royrf, Draft:List of anime series released or distributed by Crunchyroll, Draft:Delhi Sports University, Draft:Nathan Crockett and Draft:LX Xander. It was easier to restore them to Draft space and we can take care of them in 6 months. It looks like none of these drafts had AFC tags but had bot edits as the last edit and they were all eligible for deletion as CSD G13s. Liz Read! Talk! 21:06, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

- SDZeroBot intentionally only lists pages which haven't been edited at all in the 6 month period, because FireflyBot doesn't notify authors of drafts that have had bot edits in that period. I feel we should not list such pages in reports as it would lead to a lot of deletions without the draft authors ever getting notified. If the new author notification bot is taking care of such pages, then I can fix SDZeroBot to include them. – SD0001 (talk) 09:25, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for offering your perspective, User:SD0001. You have very different bot results, SDZeroBot presents all CSD G13 eligible soon drafts and user pages/sandboxes while Dreamrimmer's bot/query helps us catch drafts whose last edit was by a bot but are actually eligible now. Believe it or not, to find these drafts before October, we used to comb through the contributions of CitationBot, CommonsDelinker, EarwigBot, FrescoBot, etc., looking for them so Dreamrimmer's method is much faster and saves us hours of time. You both have created invaluable tools for admins to use.
- To think, before SDZeroBot, there would just be a database report issued once a day at 1:30 am (my time), listing all of the day's expired drafts, hundreds of them all at once. This new system allows us a much more manageable work flow throughout the day/evening and is more transparent. We can also see when "heavier" days are coming up by having a week's worth of G13 soon reports available to us. My only remaining wish is for FireflyBot to issue its 5 month report every time a draft gets close to expiring instead of only doing so once but I've asked and asked with no success. There might be some technical issues for this. Again, thanks to you both for your technical expertise. Liz Read! Talk! 21:06, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- Two new parser functions were added this week. The
{{#interwikilink}}
function adds an interwiki link and the{{#interlanguagelink}}
function adds an interlanguage link. These parser functions are useful on wikis where namespaces conflict with interwiki prefixes. For example, links beginning withMOS:
on English Wikipedia conflict with themos
language code prefix of Mooré Wikipedia. - Starting this week, Wikimedia wikis no longer support connections using old RSA-based HTTPS certificates, specifically rsa-2048. This change is to improve security for all users. Some older, unsupported browser or smartphone devices will be unable to connect; Instead, they will display a connectivity error. See the HTTPS Browser Recommendations page for more-detailed information. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [1]
- Starting December 16, Flow/Structured Discussions pages will be automatically archived and set to read-only at the following wikis: arwiki, cawiki, frwiki, mediawikiwiki, orwiki, wawiki, wawiktionary, wikidatawiki, zhwiki. This is done as part of StructuredDiscussions deprecation work. If you need any assistance to archive your page in advance, please contact Trizek (WMF). [2]
- This month the Chart extension was deployed to production and is now available on Commons and Testwiki. With the security review complete, pilot wiki deployment is expected to start in the first week of December. You can see a working version on Testwiki and read the November project update for more details.
- View all 23 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug with the "Download as PDF" system was fixed. [3]
Updates for technical contributors
- In late February, temporary accounts will be rolled out on at least 10 large wikis. This deployment will have a significant effect on the community-maintained code. This is about Toolforge tools, bots, gadgets, and user scripts that use IP address data or that are available for logged-out users. The Trust and Safety Product team wants to identify this code, monitor it, and assist in updating it ahead of the deployment to minimize disruption to workflows. The team asks technical editors and volunteer developers to help identify such tools by adding them to this list. In addition, review the updated documentation to learn how to adjust the tools. Join the discussions on the project talk page or in the dedicated thread on the Wikimedia Community Discord server (in English) for support and to share feedback.

Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.

NPP School Update
[edit]Hello @DreamRimmer! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to check about the NPP School Program that I had joined. I had completed the first section of the NPP Exam on the 11th of November. However, it has been almost a month since I submitted my response, and I haven't received any comments from you. I understand that you may be occupied with real-life activities, however I spent a lot of time writing down my responses and I do not want it to go to waste. Therefore, I sincerely request you to review my responses. Thank you, TNM101 (chat) 10:04, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

INFOBOXIMAGE
[edit]Hi DreamRimmer, I noticed that you removed the image I added to the infobox of Paul Begaud with a reference to INFOBOXIMAGE. Could you clarify the issue? I’d like to address it and ensure the image meets Wikipedia’s standards. Thanks! Everglass (talk) 23:19, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Everglass, when adding an image to an infobox, thumbnails should not be used. You had used thumbnails in the infobox, so I fixed it. I later noticed that the file URL was invalid (a red link), so I removed it. Feel free to add a valid image again. – DreamRimmer (talk) 07:54, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
Query about a query
[edit]Hello, DreamRimmer,
Do you remember, way back in October, when you first told me about your query to find G13 eligible drafts whose last edit was by a bot? Well, I ended up forking your query (see here). I hope that was okay but I realize that I should have asked you at the time. Well, I sometimes run this query, even though it was older and didn't include some bots like CommonsDelinker. Of course, GalaxyBot is the most up-to-date and efficient tool we have. But I still sometimes run this query in between GalaxyBot reports. It used to find some G13 eligible drafts but for the past week, it's come up with 0 results with every query I've run.
Is it no longer a valid query? Do you have something that is more up-to-date that I could use when I want to run a query on my own? Thanks for all of your help with all-things-technical. Liz Read! Talk! 06:09, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- You will need to update the interval time from 184 DAY to 183 DAY in four spots in this query to get the current results. – DreamRimmer (talk) 07:41, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- Later this week, Edit Check will be relocated to a sidebar on desktop. Edit check is the feature for new editors to help them follow policies and guidelines. This layout change creates space to present people with new Checks that appear while they are typing. The initial results show newcomers encountering Edit Check are 2.2 times more likely to publish a new content edit that includes a reference and is not reverted.
- The Chart extension, which enables editors to create data visualizations, was successfully made available on MediaWiki.org and three pilot wikis (Italian, Swedish, and Hebrew Wikipedias). You can see a working examples on Testwiki and read the November project update for more details.
- Translators in wikis where the mobile experience of Content Translation is available, can now discover articles in Wikiproject campaigns of their interest from the "All collection" category in the articles suggestion feature. Wikiproject Campaign organizers can use this feature, to help translators to discover articles of interest, by adding the
<page-collection> </page-collection>
tag to their campaign article list page on Meta-wiki. This will make those articles discoverable in the Content Translation tool. For more detailed information on how to use the tool and tag, please refer to the step-by-step guide. [4] - The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, now has a multiselect filter for namespace selection. This enables users to select multiple specific namespaces, instead of only one or all, when fetching pages for deletion.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions. Thanks to Chlod and the Moderator Tools team for both of these improvements. [5]
- The Editing Team is working on making it easier to populate citations from archive.org using the Citoid tool, the auto-filled citation generator. They are asking communities to add two parameters preemptively,
archiveUrl
andarchiveDate
, within the TemplateData for each citation template using Citoid. You can see an example of a change in a template, and a list of all relevant templates. [6] - One new wiki has been created: a Wikivoyage in Indonesian (
voy:id:
) [7] - Last week, all wikis had problems serving pages to logged-in users and some logged-out users for 30–45 minutes. This was caused by a database problem, and investigation is ongoing. [8]
- View all 19 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug in the Add Link feature has been fixed. Previously, the list of sections which are excluded from Add Link was partially ignored in certain cases. [9][10]
Updates for technical contributors
- Codex, the design system for Wikimedia, now has an early-stage implementation in PHP. It is available for general use in MediaWiki extensions and Toolforge apps through Composer, with use in MediaWiki core coming soon. More information is available in the documentation. Thanks to Doğu for the inspiration and many contributions to the library. [11]
- Wikimedia REST API users, such as bot operators and tool maintainers, may be affected by ongoing upgrades. On December 4, the MediaWiki Interfaces team began rerouting page/revision metadata and rendered HTML content endpoints on testwiki from RESTbase to comparable MediaWiki REST API endpoints. The team encourages active users of these endpoints to verify their tool's behavior on testwiki and raise any concerns on the related Phabricator ticket before the end of the year, as they intend to roll out the same change across all Wikimedia projects in early January. These changes are part of the work to replace the outdated RESTBase system.
- The 2024 Developer Satisfaction Survey is seeking the opinions of the Wikimedia developer community. Please take the survey if you have any role in developing software for the Wikimedia ecosystem. The survey is open until 3 January 2025, and has an associated privacy statement.
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. [12]
Meetings and events
- The next meeting in the series of Wikimedia Foundation discussions with the Wikimedia Commons community will take place on December 12 at 8:00 UTC and at 16:00 UTC. The topic of this call is new media and new contributors. Contributors from all wikis are welcome to attend.

Infobox US university ranking ARWU removal
[edit]Hello, you recently removed ARWU_NU
and ARWU_W
from all relevant university articles to help with an AutoWikiBrowser task (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks/Archive_18#Category:Pages_using_infobox_US_university_ranking_with_unknown_parameters).
These parameters were actually restored (removal reverted) the next day in the "Template:Infobox US university ranking/doc" (https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Template%3AInfobox_US_university_ranking%2Fdoc&diff=1251171664&oldid=1250304292).
It seems like the actual intention is to only remove ARWU_NU
and leave ARWU_W
, based on the discussion at https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template_talk:Infobox_US_university_ranking#This_template_causes_articles_using_it_to_generate_undefined_references. Hotdogcat (talk) 04:58, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- It was removed as per the AWBREQ request. I have no opinion on this, but please let me know if you need my help restoring it. – DreamRimmer (talk) 06:21, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oh yes I would like to request your assistance to restore them, thank you! Hotdogcat (talk) 06:34, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Before doing so, I would like to see what Primefac thinks about this, as the removal was requested by them. – DreamRimmer (talk) 06:41, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- I only requested on behalf of another editor; if discussion is needed, it should probably be on the template's talk page. Primefac (talk) 11:21, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Based on the template's talk page mentioned by user Primefac in their reply above (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template_talk:Infobox_US_university_ranking#This_template_causes_articles_using_it_to_generate_undefined_references), it looks like at least
ARWU_W
should be restored (Mikecurry1 who first raised this issue most recently stated "The ARWU_W paratmeter would make sense to stay in the template because there is an actual ARWU worldwide ranking"). Hotdogcat (talk) 16:35, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
