Melbourne Airport FAC
Hi Backslash Forwardslash and welcome back from your holiday. While you were away, Melbourne Airport was nominated for featured article status. Any help you can provide going over or copyediting the article would be greatly appreciated. Mvjs (talk) 11:28, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi mate. I'd appreciate if you could weigh in at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Melbourne Airport with your opinion on whether the article satisfies the featured article criteria. Cheers. Mvjs (talk) 23:48, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the barnstar. It really means a lot to me. Hopefully one day we'll have a little golden star on Melbourne Airport. Cheers. Mvjs (talk) 02:32, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Adoption
Hi, Backslash Forwardslash. I noticed you wanted to be adopted. May I adopt you? What kinds of things would you like to gain experience in? I'd like to help if I can. SunDragon34 (talk) 07:52, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hello! It'd be great to have you adopt me. I'm learning reasonably well at the moment, using Editing Format etc. I'm mainly interested in learning what the standards of copy-editing are here, and also trying to learn some of the more confusing WP policy. (Most of it looks simple, but some just confuse me.) Either way, it'd be great to have your help! :D \ / (⁂) 08:01, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay. I think I can do that. I'll make it official. I'll make a page where you can ask me questions and related things at User talk:SunDragon34/Adoption. For starters, what area of policy would you like to learn more about? SunDragon34 (talk) 08:06, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you are now a rollbacker. Go here to test your new tool. Note that rollback is to be used for bad faith edits only, never for edits made in good faith that are just misguided. Kingsbury
It seems to be fairly standard to include the full citation where possible (if the VC was awarded under 50 years ago it's still under Crown Copyright. The best examples are (all also Aussie VCs) are Harry Murray (WP:Featured Article), Joseph Maxwell, Blair Anderson Wark, Percy Herbert Cherry and Clarence Smith Jeffries (all WP:Good Articles, and MILHIST A-Class) which include it in full, although the citations for these are marginally shorter than that for Kingsbury. It seems to fit reasonably logically where it is, since that's where the article discusses the actual award of the VC, the other option is really to use it as part of the description of events, but sometimes later research slightly alters and fills out the accounts made at the time (a VC recommendation has to be supported by a number of eye-witnesses, but obviously in the heat of battle they might not remember things absolutely accurately). You may also want to get in touch with User:Abraham, B.S. who is the editor who's pushed the other articles I mentioned above to where they are now-he may have some additional sources and so on which would help improve the Kingsbury article further. re: Article you may be interested in
Hi mate, I havn't had a good look at the article yet, but it looks like you've done quite a good job thus far. I possess another text which includes some biographical information on Kindsbury, and should be able to add a little more information via it's use if that's okay, as well as making some general tweaks. I'll see what I can do to help you out, and provide any further suggestions for improvement! Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 03:29, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi mate, I'm sorry I haven't contributed much to the article in the last few days, but I have been a bit preoccupied with my own endeavours. I shall be able to add more information and provide you with suggestions within the next few days. I thought I would just leave this note just in case you were wondering why it kind of went dead on my end. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 10:02, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, actually there is one suggestion I can provide to you for the time being. Currently, under the references section you have used a number of books in citations, written out in full. The prefered method/style is to have the section you have named as "References" as "Notes" and use the Harvard template in the citations, so it is presented as Author(s) Year of publication Page(s), and then have another section named "References" where you list the books used as sources, exploiting the Cite book template. If what I have said seems a little confusing, perhaps have a look at Harry Murray and see how it is presented there. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 10:18, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Looks good. Only two minor comments: the books should also have their writers added and, if possible, their place of publication. Also, on citation 9, it states "Ham 2004, p. 0" is page 0 correct? It just seems a little unusual. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 11:05, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi mate. I have been going through the article with the aid of the additional sources I have at hand, and some discrepancies have popped up. In the article, it states he was born in Preston, Melbourne while two sources I have state Armadale, Melbourne. Also, the article gives his enlistment date as 16 May 1940, while my source and the World War II Nominal Roll states 29 May 1940; the Roll also supplies Avery's enlistment date as 28 May 1940, and birth in Armadale. A part also doesn't exactly make sense; at the end of the "Military Years" section it states "On 5 August, the battalion moved north, eventually catching a boat to Port Moresby in Brisbane.[1]" and at the top of the "Kokoda Track Campaign" section "On 5 August 1942, Kingsbury was shipped to Port Moresby with the 2/14th, in order to provide reinforcements to the troops on the Kokoda Track." This needs to be fixed up.
Every bit of information I have available on Kingsbury appears to already be in the article, so I'm afraid I don't think I'm able to contribute much in that area. However, if you ever have any questions or would like me to assist in any other way in regards to the article please do not hesitate to ask. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 06:22, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hot Topic
I have worked very hard in reformatting this article. It contained no verifiable sources, wild claims, subjective and unsubstantiated assertions and no reference section whatsoever. I requested financial annual reports from the company, and referenced all statistics.
Every original claim on this article was verified and referenced, or deleted. If there is a specific section you wish to discuss, please let me know. Otherwise, please don't revert the page again. It is obviously more constructive than the page that was flagged for deletion.

Throwball
You tagging of throwball for speedy deletion is a poor call. The page has been up for several years. Links to sites that mention the official rules are not considered spam. In addition, text in ALL CAPS does not imply non-notability. You could have done a google search for notability instead or listed it for AFD if you felt that the sport was non notable. Please do a thorough search before listing any articles for deletion. Reference, Reference I've listed two references that assert notability. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:37, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. I see that you requested Gwen Gale to restore the article. No probs with it, but it my defence, there were no references, basically only the game and rules were there, and ALL CAPS strongly enforced the belief that this was a game made up one day. Being the Devil's Advocate here, but anyone could create an International Federation of Wikiball (for example). [2]. In your discussion with Gwen, she said that other editors and admins may have done the same. Yet, it is extremely encouraging to see it now, and I hope it continues to improve. (I guess you don't have much time for writing articles being a Bureaucrat nowadays eh? :) \ / (⁂) 20:58, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- No, please do not ever assume that! Always look at the history of the article before tagging it. And if ever in doubt, please do a Google news search to ascertain notability. After all we are humans and we are supposed to use good judgement, else a bot could tag articles written in all caps. I'll probably draw the court and put it in once I get the time. Actually, being a bureaucrat does not take too much of my time, its just that I get too many "requests to weigh in" on discussions that I end up getting bogged down with. It's hard to say no. :( =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:17, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Kingsbury GAN
Hey mate, I see you've taken the plunge and nominated Kingsbury for GA. Seriously, the article is in pretty good shape, and I don't think it should have too much trouble passing for GA. However, I have noticed a few little things a reviewer may pick up on and thought I would give you the heads up so the areas can be fixed before the review. One concern is Kingsbury's enlistment date; it needs to be referenced, but also, as I have previously stated, a book I possess by Anthony Staunton (a leading Australian military historian, who is quite knowledgeable in areas pertaining to the Victoria Cross) Victoria Cross: Australia's Finest and the Battles They Fought as well as the World War Two Nominal Roll place it on 29 May 1940, which I'd say would be the more likely. The lead doesn't need references as long as the information it states is in the article (which is its purpose), so consider removing them and this section also needs to be referenced: "After capturing the town of Kokoda for the second time on 9 August, the Japanese began marching along the Kokoda Track towards Port Moresby. The 2,500 strong Japanese army met the weary 39th, 49th and 53rd Infantry Battalions, just 400 strong, at the town of Isurava. As the Japanese attacked, they managed to push the 53rd back to a junction behind Isurava."
These were the main issues I could see by having a quick look at the article, although I did not have a through read of the prose so there may be some minor issues there, but they shouldn't be hard to fix if picked up in the review. Well, I hope the above helps and I wish you luck with the GAN. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 04:45, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks heaps for this - I found myself staring blankly at the article looking for faults, but you know how it is. I have made/making the adjustments now. Thanks again! \ / (⁂) 05:09, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- You are very welcome. After a few reviews one comes to learn a fresh pair of eyes is always needed, as, no matter how much you look, there will nearly always be a few nit picks that need fixing/adjusting. Which actually reminds me, there is one other thing; the website access dates for the citations should be in the same format, as in YYYY-DD-MM (2008-14-11) or Day Month Year (14 November 2008). Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 06:24, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Re: FLC
First off, the lead needs to be expanded. The table should also be cleaned up and reformatted, as long as with it's key. A good example for this would be the Cy Young Award a recently promoted FL. If you need any further help, don't hesitate to ask me :).--SRX 23:19, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. What would you think of merging the list with the main article? Will that make the page too long? Obviously it would need significant improvement they were merged. \ / (⁂) 05:45, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think it will make the page too long and it will make it have too much prose versus a list itself.--SRX 15:03, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

- That's great. I'll be around all the weekend until Sunday 6:00 PM UTC so should fit in nicely. Cheers. Sunderland06 (talk) 20:00, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

- Yeah, I've dealt with GAR before, but I hadn't realised GAR also included articles that had been failed, I thought it would've been appropriate to just renomminate it. Just one thing, aren't you meant to keep the article on WP:GAN if you are in the process of reviewing it? Cheers. Sunderland06 (talk) 19:46, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Cheers for passing the article, I've added some pics, but I've also got some more to come. Cheers a lot for the review. Sunderland06 (talk) 15:30, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
re Barnstar
Thank you very much, mate! It has been a pleasure, although I haven’t done that much, lol. What a unusual coincidence, though, as I was just making some slight tweaks to the article and was just about to update you with a fact that you might not know and I receive a barnstar from you. Well here is the fact: I'm not sure if you knew this, but Avery was one of the four Military Medal recipients in 7 Section, and when I was going through the article I spotted this fragment "such as a major battle for Jezzine, during which Avery was wounded." and I wondered if it was in this action that he was awarded his MM; it turns out it was. (See here and here) Well, once again, thank you very much and I hope you found the fact interesting (if you didn't know it, that is!). Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 11:02, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, sounds like a good read; I'll have to look into it. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 21:34, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
GA for Kauhajoki school shooting
I've been working on it a little bit, as with some people as well. The long response section has been splitted into a new article, and I've tried to change the tenses of some lines such as "woman was injured but in stable condition." I'm sure there are other aspects of the article that need work for GA standards, and I'd appreciate it if you could point those out. Thank you. Thank you for the GA review of the article above. I understand why it failed and have taken steps to bring it (I hope) to GA status. If you could take another look at the article for a copyedit (I notice your name has recently been added to the list of participants), I would appreciate it. I'd like to renominate the article for GA status. Thank you! ItsLassieTime (talk) 06:07, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
I second that! Glubbdrubb (talk) 18:11, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Have you noticed that there are a couple of verified hooks in the 17th section? We should try to promote earlier hooks first. --BorgQueen (talk) 10:18, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK to Next
Hey,
First of all, thanks for all the work you've been putting in at DYK! You've really put a huge dent in the backlog of hooks that were piling up.
That being said, I just wanted to mention I noticed a few times that you've been verifying a hook and then moving it to Next right after. I don't think there are any official rules regarding that, but my impression (and I have not been around DYK very long, so I could be wrong) is that reviewers generally don't promote hooks they just verified (with the exception that if you verified a hook several days ago and no one has taken it or objected to it, you can take it to Next)...mainly just as another check/balance in the system, just like how nominators are discouraged from verifying their own hooks. Anyway, it's not a huge deal, and of course you can check with the other regulars if you think I'm wrong, but I just wanted to point that out. Generally if you verify a hook, someone else should get around to promoting it within a day or two. Thanks again, —Politizer talk/contribs 09:40, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I certainly do not like moving self-verified hook straight onto the next update. I have been trying to add the oldest verified, but often that there is a five day difference. When I have done it, I've tried to make sure it's a very obvious pass. That being said, I could always wait couldn't I? :P \ / (⁂) 09:44, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- That's true...I've been trying to verify a bunch of old hooks lately, but I'm not able to do it regularly enough to always stay on top of things. I didn't notice specifically which hooks you were promoting, but it's good that you're doing the ones that aren't likely to be challenged; that's the most important thing. As for promoting old hooks, I know that is the standard, but personally I like to try to throw in one or two recent hooks as well (if we're not under a terrible backlog, and assuming that someone has actually verified recent hooks) just to mix things up. But anyway, thanks for your response; since the hooks you're promoting are the ones that are pretty clear, then I think everything should be all right! —Politizer talk/contribs 09:48, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Hey, sorry for the delay but it was decided to leave the Myst Online: Uru Live content seperate, so the article is awaiting your consideration. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:10, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to say, I've noticed you around the DYK area just recently helping out a whole lot—thanks for all your great work! Helping verify and move hooks for the next update to keep the cycle rolling; we all appreciate it. :-) Cheers! Jamie☆S93 04:56, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Nameless
Regarding this edit, I was wondering why you chose the alt hook when the creator himself/herself explicitly stated that Nameless is not a town? --BorgQueen (talk) 06:05, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi BorgQueen. It would appear that I have forgotten my reading glasses. I read the reply by Suntag, in which he says that town would be fine, but I don't remember seeing that last comment. It may have been separated into a different section, rather than the one I was trying to edit, or much more likely, I just completely missed. I will try my best to avoid such instances again, I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience. \ / (⁂) 06:11, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
- No Wait! I remember now! I had an edit conflict clearing that hook - I mustn't have checked why. My bad, feel free to mess up my userpage a bit. ;) \ / (⁂) 06:17, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
