re: RfA Comments

[edit]

Hello! To answer your observation: my RfA comments only came about because I normally arrived at those discussions at the midway point and felt I was contributing nothing of value by repeating the same “Support – great candidate” comments that 25 or 30 other editors said. The “wrong queue” comments came about just to be different, not to be funny. There is no “joke,” per se – it is just a small revolt against conformity. Of course, I only do that when I support a candidate – I never do that with oppose or neutral input, because I need to be serious in explaining why I cannot get behind a candidacy. RE: Adminship

[edit]

Thanks for the offer, Axl :) I'm going to leave it a fair while until I've started (don't know how long away that is) and finished my admin coaching with Malinaccier (talk · contribs). You'd be welcome to co-nom me if you so feel the need when the time comes :) Thanks again, hope everything's okay. —Cyclonenim (talk · contribs · email) 20:32, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxygen toxicity revisited

[edit]

Gene Hobbs and I have almost finished the re-write of Oxygen toxicity (many thanks for the barnstar, by the way!). As I still would like to get at least one scuba-related article to GA status, one of us will renominate it as GAC soon. I don't know whether you will be able to review it this time, but if you can't, could I ask you to have a pre-nomination look and spare a few minutes to let us know if the points you raised at Talk:Oxygen toxicity/GA2 need any further work. I do know I have to research the history of BPD and that there are still a number of short paragraphs. I think that's due to the fact that the article summarises CNS tox, pulmonary tox, BPD, ARDS and ROP and covers clinical and diving viewpoints. If I knew what I was tackling at the start, I think I'd have picked an easier topic! Anyway, don't worry if you're busy, but any observations & criticism are welcome. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 23:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia UK v2.0

[edit]

Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in Wikimedia UK v2.0. Formation of the company is currently underway under the official name "Wiki UK Limited", and we are hoping to start accepting membership in the near future. We have been drawing up a set of membership guidelines, determining what membership levels we'll have (we plan on starting off with just standard Membership, formerly known as Guarantor Membership, with supporting membership / friends scheme coming later), who can apply for membership (everyone), what information we'll collect on the application form, why applications may be rejected, and data retention. Your input on all of this would be appreciated. We're especially after the community's thoughts on what the membership fee should be. Please leave a message on the talk page with your thoughts.

Also, we're currently setting up a monthly newsletter to keep everyone informed about the to-be-Chapter's progress. If you would like to receive this newsletter, please put your username down on this page.

Thanks again. Mike Peel (talk) 19:51, 8 November 2008 (UTC) (Membership Secretary, Wikimedia UK [Proposed])[reply]

Meningitis is at GAN

[edit]

Hey. Jfdwolff put up meningitis for GAN review the other day and we're quite eager to get it sorted. I think I've seen you do reviews in the past and they seemed pretty thorough. I was wondering if you had any spare time you could use for reviewing this article? No worries if you're too busy, there's no particular rush. Thanks. —Cyclonenim (talk · contribs · email) 23:13, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, it appears Delldot (talk · contribs) has carried out the request. Thanks anyway. —Cyclonenim (talk · contribs · email) 07:41, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your input at my successful Rfa. I'm already thinking about working on my content creation. Hopefully in a few months, I'll have passed the point where you would've !voted Support. Osteochondritis dissecans. Thanks for the review. I told my students that taking on medical topics would be extremely challenging. First, reviewers are hard to find on such technical topics. Second, the standards are much greater. None-the-less I am not unpleased with FoddPuma's efforts. Even with the grade already in the book; I'm certain he will attempt to recitify your concerns. What are your thoughts on an FA attempt. With a topic of this nature; is such an attempt reasonable? --JimmyButler (talk) 01:30, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jimmy. I am also impressed with FoodPuma's (Max?) work. I think that medical topics are more challenging that popular culture articles. Also, my reviews tend be more rigorous than average. However I think that this produces a better article in the end (and the editor can be more proud of his work). Medical article FA attempts are significantly more daunting than GA. I have submitted one medical article through FAC, and I didn't enjoy it. The article is heavily criticized by several people, and it can be quite demoralizing. After the article passes GA, I'll give some more feedback about further potential for improvement, with a view to FAC. Axl ¤ [Talk] 02:34, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Axl. I was just reading through the article and noticed that I repeated the line

"The adult form, which occurs in those who have reached skeletal maturity, is most commonly found in patients of ages 16 to 50 years."

in both Osteochondritis_dissecans#Prognosis and Osteochondritis_dissecans#Epidemiology. This repition makes the text read "weird" and seems to interrupt flow... it made me stop and scroll back up to Prognosis just to verify that I had read an exact copy of the sentence only seconds prior. I suggest it be removed, but do you think it should be kept/reworded (if it is necessary to the context of information in Osteochondritis_dissecans#Epidemiology)? Thanks! FoodPuma 21:14, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That sentence is better placed in "Epidemiology". I have adjusted the article accordingly. Axl ¤ [Talk] 11:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki UK Ltd Membership applications now invited!

[edit]

Hello,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wiki UK Limited is now inviting membership applications! You can download the application form in PDF format from meta:Image:Wiki_UK_Ltd_membership_application_form.pdf

Information is given on the form about membership fees (£12/year standard, £6 for concessions); these need to be paid by cheque initially, although we hope to accept other forms of payment in the future. Applications should be submitted to me at the address given on the form. If you have any queries about the application process, please let me know.

We will formally start accepting members once we have a bank account, as we cannot process membership fees until that time. We will be submitting our application for a bank account in the very near future, and we hope to have this set up by the end of December at the latest.

Thank you for your support so far; I look forward to receiving your membership application.

Axl, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Somniferous GAC

[edit]

Hullo Axl, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on obesity hypoventilation syndrome. I wrote this in two stretches, and it's currently on GAC. Given that I slept through much of the respiratory physiology lectures at medical school (no, I'm not obese, just nocturnal) I was wondering if you could verify its factuality. If you could include a GA review as well, that would be great too. JFW | T@lk 22:28, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments on the OHS talk page. I have revised the offending section. Will you have a chance to do a formal GA review? You seem to be the most qualified to do it :-). JFW | T@lk 18:26, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the adjustment, although that wasn't the section that I meant. I'll change the sentence later on (in the "Positive airway pressure" section). I'm working night shifts at the moment, so I don't have time to formally review the article now. If no-one has stepped up by the weekend, I'll take a closer look. Axl ¤ [Talk] 18:59, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
