Words for dates and duration

[edit]

Wikipedia articles should usually not use terms such as "the present", "Today" and "currently" because the reader has no easy way to know what time is actually referred to. It is not safe to assume that someone will revise the article and keep it up to date at all times. For example suppose that someone wrote about a partially destroyed structure "The rest of the building still stands today." This was correct when written. But 2 years later if the rest of the building is leveled, it would be wrong unless revised. It would be better to write "{{xt|As of May 2017, the rest of the building still stands.}" Or suppose in an article about a musician, someone wrote "He is now working on his next album, with the working title Explosion. If the album is released in 6 months but no one revises the article, a reader might be mislead into thinking the album had not yet come out. Instead one should write: "As of May 2017, he is working on his next album, with the working title Explosion. If someone reads this next January, it will be clear that the album's status is only given as of this month. Similarly, history sections should avoid titles such as "2012-Present", using "2012-2017" or "2012-Present (as of 2017)". think about how the article will read if it is not edited for 5 years, and whether words like "present" will still be accurate.

This note is, of course, prompted by recent edits on Draft:Xposed 4Heads such as this edit. DES (talk) 21:47, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
