Help Me

Can we use Wikipedia as a source? An IP is reverting edits I made on List of Telecaster players. On the list, Jim Root was listed as a player, with the reference being Jim's Wiki article, but the IP reverted the edit saying that Wikipedia cannot be used as a source. But the problem is that the whole equipment section in Jim's article verifies that he is a Telecaster player. Please correct me if I'm wrong. GaneshBhakt (talk) 13:29, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Hungarian name order

I don't understand your (completely unexplained) reversion of my edit as "unconstructive": http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=George_Szell&diff=next&oldid=432648615. Hungarian names traditionally have the family name first, and we are speaking of the birth name of a man born Hungarian. If the sentence is stating what he was "originally" called, the name should reflect the naming customs of his country of origin. The article says he grew up in Vienna, so presumably his name-change to the eventual George Szell was a multi-step process, but I don't see why noting so would not be constructive.

It is neither offensive or controversial. It is not vandalism, or a political statement, but a good-faith correction. —68.9.18.224 (talk) 09:09, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, the one and only time I misread an edit summary! Apologies! GaneshBhakt (talk) 11:01, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
Okay! I didn't change it back because I didn't want to step on any toes. Take care. —68.9.18.224 (talk) 11:26, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

In regard to this edit, please note that the blanking was done (a) by the page's sole author, and (b) after the content had been tagged as a copyright violation. Thus, it would have been better to tag the page as {{db-author}} rather than to restore the copyright-violating text. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:26, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry! I didn't know he was the author. I thought that the person who blanked the page, blanked it to remove the copyvio tag. So I restored it. FWIK, the person was about a non-notable person, so I thought I would mark it as {{db-person}}. GaneshBhakt (talk) 06:02, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Bristol Bagshot

If you had bothered to read the note about my rewrite of this, you would have seen that I stated reference there: both standard works & recognisable as such. One is aalready cied in the bibliograpy: the other was about to be added. The article you have reverted to is substantially WRONG:M my version is 'correct'.TheLongTone (talk) 04:20, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

You never provided sources. P.S.: Even if sources are present in the bibliography, you have to provide the references again. GaneshBhakt (talk) 04:25, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Oh for crying out loud. Read the guidelines, read what I wrote on the bagshot page, and check it against the two rock-solid references. You no not need to individually cite every single statement.TheLongTone (talk) 05:01, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
You never leaved an edit summary saying added content with abc in bibliography as ref. Considering that you had, all this fuss would never have happened. Because if you check the revisions, no refs or no edit summary specifying that content was added from ext. link was present. Do learn to leave an edit summary. Please withdraw your last comment and remain civil before I launch a complaint against you. GaneshBhakt (talk) 08:45, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Several points.
  • I do leave notes on edits and did so in this case. It is true that I was not logged on when I made the initial edit, (a browser crash)but the note was there. It is about references.
  • If you read the edit it was apparent that it was a good faith edit: question it certainly, but don't undo it unless you are an expert on the subject in question.
  • I'm sure that many edits are done in several closely-timed stages: after an initial major addition returning to deal with typos, broken links &c. I find the syntax for references difficult and moreover editing it often requires saving work and editing a separate sectopn of the article. This was so in this case.
As for withdrawing my previous comment, which item on the list offends you? I would advise you to watch 'to Have and Have Not' especially the scene in which Bogart meets the character played by Lauren Bacall. It's fabulous. And I have certainly done my level best to remain civil under a certain amount of provocationTheLongTone (talk) 07:33, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Message added 20:34, 11 June 2011 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I have reverted your removal of the IP's addition. Other than IP bias, I fail to understand how a local newspaper fails to qualify as a source in Wikipedia. I have started a discussion thread on the article in question. 23skidoo (talk) 23:45, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

  • You did it on the Midtown Plaza article too, and in doing so introduced a factual error. It took me 30 seconds to verify the sources. Did you make the effort before knee-jerking? 23skidoo (talk) 23:47, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi - I've commented at PERM. Pedro :  Chat  12:53, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

2011 anti-corruption

Hi, noticed your recent edits & generally have no problem. But I am unhappy about you reverting the layout of the Bill section. Using numbers for the list is undue weight because it suggests #1 is somehow superior to #5 etc. WP:MOS deals with this somewhere & specifically says do not do it. It deals also with having extremely short subsections - basically, don't do that either. This is why I changed that stuff this morning. Could you possibly think again, please.

I'm really impressed with what you are doing generally. The article is a mess and you are putting a lot of time into sorting it out. My guess is we'll both be spending a few more hours on it yet! - Sitush (talk) 14:16, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Perfect Ref

Can someone link the "perfect ref" so that I can add refs to an article based on "the perfect ref" GaneshBhakt (talk) 05:00, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Never mind. I found the perfect way to format refs at Bobby Robson. GaneshBhakt (talk) 06:18, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Ref names

Hi, you could make life quite a bit easier with your choice of names for references. Instead of using a long-winded newspaper headline as the name, which makes the edit box difficult to negotiate, why not use a more specific name?

For example "Anna Hazare says no to the proposals; Prime Minister says that is stupid." might be a headline from The Hindu on 9 April 2011. Instead of using <ref name="Anna Hazare says no to the proposals; Prime Minister says that is stupid.">, you could use <ref name="TheHindu20110409"> Remember, the headline is going to show up anyway because the "title" parameter has to be filled in. - Sitush (talk) 19:16, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Alright. But I believe that the Drafting Committee thing you just merged was incorrect. I believe that the section should stay because it was a result of the movement. Even if not the whole section but some part of it in a new section or in another already existing section. GaneshBhakt (talk) 19:24, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
It has nothing to do with the movement. A single sentence would suffice & I will add one in due course if it is not already there. I am actually pretty sure that it is already there, since it formed the reason why the hunger strike was stopped. The detail is totally irrelevant to the 2011 article but massively relevant to the Jan Lokpal article. As it was, the latter sent people over to the former. Trust me, I am right about this and you are unlikely to find any experienced editors who disagree. - Sitush (talk) 19:28, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
The info is indeed already there, in so far as it needs to be. The article says: "The Government of India accepted the compromise formula that there be a politician chairman and an activist, non-politician Co-Chairman. It was reported that Pranab Mukherjee will be the Chairman of the draft committee while Shanti Bhushan will be the co-chairman.[39] Shanti Bhushan was one of the original drafters of the Lokpal Bill along with Hazare, Justice N. Santosh Hegde, advocate Prashant Bhushan, and RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal. ... After accepting all the demands of Hazare, the Government of India issued a Official Gazette saying that the draft of lokpal would be made and presented in the coming monsoon session of Lok Sabha."
It needs a little tweaking, but not the detail of members etc that was in the bit I merged to elsewhere. - Sitush (talk) 19:31, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough. GaneshBhakt (talk) 19:33, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

IP, please see WP:AAGF, particularly admonishing someone to "assume good faith" is in fact assuming that they are not assuming good faith - the admonisher is ironically violating the very principle he or she is purporting to uphold, and is being uncivil. - SudoGhost 21:03, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

It is not unconstructive but unreferenced. GaneshBhakt (talk) 06:03, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
On my talk page you said it was unconstructive. As far as unreferenced, how do you reference something that did not happen? The ban has not been lifted...it's like trying to prove a negative, logically impossible. 66.69.112.250 (talk) 00:12, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
The moratorium may still be in effect. But there is no reliable source verifying the same. GaneshBhakt (talk) 10:34, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Cay article

You reverted my addition to the Cay article, claiming it was unsourced. However, this is not the case. I typed my addition right before the three citations. I had typed that drummer Mark Bullock had amended his June 16 blog posting to clarify the nature of Anet Mook's death. Bullock's posting is one of the three aforementioned citations. If one clicks the citation that leads to Bullock's June 16 posting, one will see that on June 20 he amended it, just as I stated. Also, it is worth noting that Bullock is the primary source of all the information circulating about Anet Mook's death, and he is now being cited by the media as they report on Mook's death. The other two cources, label head Sean Organ and music writer Paul O' Connell, found out about Anet's death through Bullock, something which their respective articles on the matter state. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mhann24 (talkcontribs) 19:45, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

#I do not understand which article you are talking about. Please Wikilink it.
#As far as I know, blog posts aren't reliable sources. GaneshBhakt (talk) 19:53, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

The cay entry is at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Cay_(band) and Bullock's blog posting is at http://sinkofswirlingstars.blogspot.com/2011/06/anet-mook-2011.html Bullock's blog posting is reliable not because it is a blog posting, but because he is Mark Bullock, former drummer of cay. Paul O'Connell and Sean Organ are friends with him and link to the blog. Basically, we can cite and cite articles from any number of places now, but they all go back to Bullock. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mhann24 (talkcontribs) 20:08, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

You can change your text to: Bullock later clarified the cause of Mook's death stating that she was struck by a train. GaneshBhakt (talk) 20:14, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

In regards to the programing schedule, it's often relied upon to heavily in that editors will come out of the woodwork and try use it to verify that won't broadcast for several weeks or don't exist at all. Then you have the fact that the information is only good seven days. So you'd have keep taking it down every time said episode broadcasts. It's best to use long term sources to help keep the information relevant. Sarujo (talk) 17:23, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

File renames

Is there a set of 'objective' rules for renaming stuff? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:42, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Don't know about a set of objective rules mate, but you are on the right track. Except for 3-4 renames, all the renames were needed. Keep it up! Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 19:53, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
BTW Much appreciated if you could check for article space links , and update them when doing the rename.. I've checked the existinf

ones and updated so that DASHBot and other tools don't catch the 'non-free' ones as technical orphans... Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:05, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Can you please have a look

At this page Aziz Yıldırım. An editor is insisting to name his residence as "Metris, Istanbul". This person is a major club's president who's currently under investigation, but it's only recent and there's no court rule. FYI "Metris" is the name of a prison in Istanbul, Turkey. The reason he is doing this is to show the "rival president" as a criminal. Moreover I have never seen someone's residence to be named a prison. Who can I contact about this? This needs to be changed. It's really outrageous for many people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Horleas (talkcontribs) 13:42, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

About Biographies

Hello Avenue X at Cicero, Please take a look at these biographies Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar and J. Jayalalithaa, make sure that you make the necessary changes as you made in Mamata Banerjee.Thanks--Kkm010* ۩ ۞ 04:52, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

What happen ? Take a look at these articles.--Kkm010* ۩ ۞ 04:49, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I don't see Fooian Minister of Railways or Fooian Member of Parliament so I don't think Fooian Chief Minister of West Bengal is neccessary. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 08:49, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
You didn't get it, all I'm saying that the changes that u made in "Mamata Banerjee", the same changes i would also like to see in those articles otherwise i would revert the changes that u made in Mamata Banerjee article. Is that clear.

And secondly please don't remove the "List of Chief Minister" article without any valid reason whatsoever.--Kkm010* ۩ ۞ 09:12, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Why the heck are u reverting my-edits? knowing that there's nothing wrong in that.--Kkm010* ۩ ۞ 12:07, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
There is a small problem. The table you made doesn't look good (atleast to me), at all. Coloring the whole things make it more uniform and the dark grey "President's rule" thing is good. Also, if you want to change, you may change the CPI(M) colors to the colors given to the Democrats in this table to make it more legible. Also, I'm sorry for reverting your good faith edits. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 12:51, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Now take a look List of Chief Ministers of West Bengal, I hope u will like it.--Kkm010* ۩ ۞ 14:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Good work, but lets retain the presidents rule thing to mark it out from the rest. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 14:25, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Request

Hello! Could you write an article about my city - Żagań on hindi Wikipedia? Only 2-4 sentences enough. I would be thankful. Saganum (talk) 12:12, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Could you please provide the pronounciation of the name of your city? Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 12:18, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Sure - According to IPA it's [ˈʒaɡãɲ]. In English language pronounciation of Żagań sounds like „ja-ganj”. Saganum (talk) 12:59, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I checked (Check 1 and Check 2) Google Translate. Please hear the Hindi pronounciation and say which one sounds better. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 13:04, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I think, that first translation (Check 1) sounds better. Saganum (talk) 13:13, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Done. With pleasure! Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 13:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your article! Saganum (talk) 15:20, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Haha

How in God's name was it disruptive editing? Wikipedia is all about being up to date. at the time of the edit Downing was on the brink of the move to Liverpool, if someone who hadn't seen the news had looked on his page they wouldn't have been aware a medical had been completed. Once a deal had been completed there was no need for the bit about him completing a medical so i took it off once a deal had gone through.

Who are you to say it's disruptive editing? I wasn't posting lies or blemishing the truth, I posted the truth and sourced it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NgogWeTrust (talkcontribs) 12:47, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

RE:July 2011

Regarding this warning: you are allowed to delete messages on your own talk page per user talk page guidelines. --I dream of horses @ 16:33, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

I know that we are allowed to delete content from our own talk page but I'm not sure if it extends to user warnings. On a personal note, I believe that removing warnings from your own user page should be regarded as vandalism. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 16:38, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
  • To quote from the relevant policy, "Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered users, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred. The removal of material from a user page is normally taken to mean that the user has read and is aware of its contents. There is no need to keep them on display and usually users should not be forced to do so. It is often best to simply let the matter rest if the issues stop. If they do not, or they recur, then any record of past warnings and discussions can be found in the page history if ever needed, and these diffs are just as good evidence of previous matters if need" - this covers warning messages, otherwise the last sentence would be an irrelevancy and not included. Removing warning messages or blanking your own talkpage is not WP:VANDALISM; the fact that you insist it is and the overarching dispute over blanking talkpages indicates you obviously aren't knowledgeable enough about policy to be enforcing it with semiautomated tools. I have removed your rollback access; when you demonstrate that you are comfortable enough with policy to use it, you may request it back from any administrator. In the meantime, nobody who doesn't understand either talkpage policy or the definition of vandalism should be running with scissors. Regards, Ironholds (talk) 19:49, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Note that I have also removed huggle access; same terms and conditions apply. Ironholds (talk) 20:00, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
@Ironholds, thank you for qouting the relevant policy and apologies for warning the user for reverting their warnings. The reason why I warned the user was because I frquently use Huggle to report vandals on Wikipedia. Since I already knew that I had given a lv 3 warning, and the two warnings I was about to issue would have him reported, I was bewildered to know that he had removed his warnings not once, not twice, but thrice. I could have manually reported him at AIV and he could have been blocked. Also, I didn't warn him after after repeated reverts here, here, here, and here, but had to warn him as he just wouldn't listen. Or I could have even warned/reported him for reverting my edits for no apparent reason specified in an edit summary, or for adding that Downing has left AVFC prematurely. As far as I have known, warnings help users using semi-auto tools to report them if their vand reaches a new high and personally, being a semi-auto tool user, I have always found it easier to report users using Huggle and believe that removing warning templates misguides users who use Huggle. I didn't know about the warning part of the talk page guidelines, but now that I do, I know I would surely make a better rollbacker. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 20:19, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Also, as you can see, my warnings were {{uw-error2}}, {{uw-delete3}} and {{uw-delete4}}. None of them were for vandalism. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 20:26, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
  • The "vandalism" comment is not your warnings - it's the note you made at the top of this thread. I am not questioning your assumption of good faith or dedication to enforcing policy, simply your understanding of what policy is. Ironholds (talk) 20:33, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
"the fact that you insist it is and the overarching dispute over blanking talkpages indicates you obviously aren't knowledgeable enough about policy to be enforcing it with semiautomated tools" As you can see, my warnings were {{uw-error2}}, {{uw-delete3}} and {{uw-delete4}}. None of them were for vandalism. In my knowledge {{uw-delete}} at any level and {{uw-vandalism}} at any level produce different results. Also, since you have removed my user right saying that it is improper of {{uw-vandalism}} warning a user for blanking a talk page (to quote you, :Removing warning messages or blanking your own talkpage is not WP:VANDALISM:), even though I {{uw-delete}} warned them, I request you to restore my user right. As you can see from my contribs, I can pretty well distinguish what is vandalism and what is not vandalism. BTW... thank you for informing me about the UTP guide. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 20:39, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
  • No, Avenue, again, I am not criticising you for the warnings you left. You stated, on this page, immediately at the top of this thread (and this is the second time I am having to inform you what you said) "On a personal note, I believe that removing warnings from your own user page is vandalism". This clearly shows both an ignorance of policy and an incompatibility between your idea of "vandalism" and what vandalism actually is, and gives no reason for you to be allowed to use semi-automated and privileged tools and userrights. Ironholds (talk) 21:38, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
As far I understand, {{uw-vandalism}} is for any kind of vandalism, while {{uw-delete}} is for deletion/blanking vandalism. So essentially, {{uw-delete}} is for a specific form of vandalism, while you can use {{uw-vandalism}} for any form of vandalism. What I'm trying to say is, you used a template that's meant for people who have vandalized, not for people who are editing with the guidelines of Wikipedia, which include the user talk page guidelines.
Otherwise, what Ironholds said. --I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 01:12, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
