Welcome to Wikipedia!

Dear AubreyEllenShomo: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Wikipedians try to follow a strict policy of never biting new users. If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any discussion comment with four tildes (~~~~). The software will automatically convert this into your signature which can be altered in the "Preferences" tab at the top of the screen. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with information. If you need any help just let me know. Once again welcome to Wikipedia, and don't forget to tell us about yourself and be BOLD! HighInBC 19:43, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Message received. Since it's already tagged, and there's still no significant assertion of notability, I suggest waiting for an admin to take care of it. If the administrator does not speedily delete it, then further action like taking it to AfD would be appropriate. Thanks, and have a good day! Mr Spunky Toffee 00:31, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Comment from SlowJog about the "American Democracy Project"

As far as I can tell, the link to "American Democracy Project" in "Film Your Issue" does NOT point to the right place. The article on the ADP on Wikipedia is about a smaller organization.

I hope someone will create an article about the ADP active on college campuses. In preparation, I renamed the existing article.

-- This unsigned comment was left by SlowJog ( talk | contribs ) on 23 October 2006 at 16:17

Someone created a new article about the ADP. So, the link in "Film Your Issue" might now be correct. SlowJog 01:09, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Warnings posted to User talk:205.121.132.251

Hi, I just posted a warning to User talk:205.121.132.251, and it took me a minute to sort it all out. It looks like you added new warnings to the top of the page on October 18th, then added a section head ("Earlier issues with this IP") for the previous stuff. I can see that you did this very early in your time on Wikipedia, so you've probably already realized that we never do this. Warnings on talk pages always stay in chronological order, otherwise it's impossible for the next person (or bot) who comes along to sort out what warning level to apply. I've put the page back into chronological order. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:46, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Sorry. My bad. That was actually the first IP I reported to AIV, and one of the earliest vandalism warnings I issued. I am aware that I messed up the talk page by reverse-chronological ordering it. I don't think I did that to any other pages, and I am aware now to always warn at the bottom. Thanks. AubreyEllenShomo 19:39, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

No worries, I noticed that it was one of your earliest edits. I just wanted to make sure you knew about the convention of always adding new comments on the bottom. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 19:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I apologize for removing your report. It was an accident and unintentional. I will be more careful in the future. Thanks.  E. Sn0 =31337Talk 21:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

No worries. I had assumed as much. Thanks for the note, though. AubreyEllenShomo 21:22, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Always a good idea to allay fears. I see my talk page notices are getting around. I like your userboxen too, I borrowed the 'user selfeducated2(f/m)' one and chose the appropriate gender. Nice to meet you! :D  E. Sn0 =31337Talk 21:25, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
So you're the original creator of the talk page notices. Thanks for them. Nice to meet you, also! AubreyEllenShomo 21:30, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Actually I think the 'User makes mistakes on RC Patrol please don't rip my head off for my legit revert or edit' one was made by User:Patstuart. The 'don't bridge convos across talk pages' was User:Kbdank71's, and the other two are generics I found lying around. So no, I really didn't make them, and I apologize for implying I did. :)  E. Sn0 =31337Talk 21:34, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Hehe. It's all good. I didn't make the self-educated userbox, but I use it. I did make four of them (the ones in my user space), but I'm all for ripping off useful stuff from others. It is the GNU Free Documentation License, after all.  :) AubreyEllenShomo 21:52, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Your "spoiler fixes" of the Conan stories

As your spoiler fixes to the Conan stories ruin the page formatting for each article, please undo them. Your fixes ruin the article format with a giant line across the images. Again, as this does not improve the articles, please undo the changes. --Flask 02:23, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Is that a warning? (It sounds like one.) I must protest if it is a warning, as I cannot see what you're talking about. What browser are you using? I fixed the spoiler warnings to improve the articles, as the ones that were there categorized the pages they were in as spoiler templates (which, of course, they're not). They also had a broken div tag, with a close but no open. The article needed improvement on those two points, which is exactly what I did. I don't see the lines you refer to on Firefox or IE on windows. I will see if there are templates without lines, and replace with those. If not, I'll make such templates. I just can't tell if I've fixed the problem you see, as I can't see it. AubreyEllenShomo 02:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
  • There. I created a new template and removed the spoiler div from it, so it displays without the lines. That template is {{Spoiler-nolines}}. I'm always happy to help other users out. You may want to report the problem you're having with your browser and the {{Spoiler}} template to WP:HELP. There isn't anything I can do to fix your display issue. AubreyEllenShomo 02:42, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Thank you very, very much for creating the {{Spoiler-nolines}} template. That seems to fix the problem perfectly. --Flask 11:01, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Hi! I noticed your userbox over there said that you have published work. I was wondering, what was this work? Thanks! .V. 04:52, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

  • After much time off wikipedia, I am back. I published a couple of essays and articles. I've published in Open Minds Quarterly, 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, and Transgender Tapestry. I was also the subject of a front page article in Front Range Tech Biz in 2002. AubreyEllenShomo 22:26, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

American Democracy Project ?

I'm concerned that someone might remove the article on American Democracy Project (ADP) because of plagerism. The wording of the ADP article substanially resembles the page on ADP's website (as of early November or late October.) However, this was posted by someone at ADP, so it was done with permission. How is this handled?

Put it in a block quote? Add a note that it was copied with permission? How would this affect future editing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by SlowJog (talkcontribs) 15:45, 16 December 2006

Sorry for the long delay. I had gone off-wikipedia for a while. I am now back. Copyright stuff still has to be released (and verifiably released) elsewhere. ADP would have to have this text somewhere online and release it under an acceptable license. Otherwise, it's not possible to know (and verify) it was okay. redaction of attack

Hello, I noticed you placed speedy deletion tag to my newly created article Chen Guoling. Actually, it is within a project we are working on. (see 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China). And someone ask me to create one article for every member. (see my talk pape). Thus, I feel obligated to argue with you.

This person boasts two titles, which are eligible for his remaining in Wiki. First, he is a political commissar of Nanjing Military Region, one of seven major military regions in China, in charge of PLA armies in several provinces in East China. Nanjing Military Region is especially important, due to its responsibility of direct overseeing the Taiwan Strait. And he is the second head there, only after the commander.

Second, he is a member of newly elected CPC 17th central committee, the major leadership body in today's China. There're totally 204 central committee members, and their status are equivalent to the congressmen in USA. So if you're not so familiar with the politics in China, you may not want to put your hand on such subjects.

Of course, this article is a stub at this time. But almost every article in Wiki starts with a stub. Plus, this person is a military general, and there may not be much accessible information about him. But it doesn't affect the fact he is one of important figures in today's politics and military in China. BTW, a Chinese wiki article has been created on this person, and I've linked it to that. Regards. Ramtears (talk) 01:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually, if you'll note my edit summary, you'll see I only replaced the speedy tag that was placed by Leonard^Bloom. My edit summary reads "Re-adding speedy tag placed by Leonard^Bloom for process. Adding {{hangon}}. Speedy tag was removed by article creator." I re-added the speedy tag because it is not appropriate for an editor to remove a speedy tag from an article that that editor created. The proper procedure is to add a {{hangon}} tag instead, to state you're contesting the speedy deletion. As you'll note, I replaced the speedy tag you removed, and I added the {{hangon}} tag you should have placed instead. I have no objection to the article or the subject's notability. In fact, when the admin declined the speedy, and changed it to a proposed deletion, I objected to the {{prod}} closing the proposed deletion and keeping the article in place. My edit summary for that was "Object to {{prod}}. This seems like a decent enough stub article about a chinese military general." So, there's no need to argue. I'm not disputing the subject's notability. I'm just objecting to how you handled your objection to the speedy deletion. AubreyEllenShomo (talk) 01:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I assume that's the mistake many newcomers would've made, including me. Thanks for your instruction. Ramtears (talk) 02:08, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Brent Vaca

Hi there. So before recommending a speedy deletion, I did a quick Google - and this name doesn't exist in terms of hits, articles, whatever online. Some race standings, but subject not claiming notability on racing. The author of the page has asserted notability, but without references. I'm not on a crusade, but it still seems deeply squidgy. Any advice to a wikinewbie on what one does next - does the article stand for a certain sort of time as a courtesy or get nominated for AfD? EBY3221 (talk) 13:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

  • A lot of times, in cases like this, the article will get nominated for AfD right away. If you feel that's the thing to do, by all means, nominate it for AfD. The declining of a speedy just means that it wasn't clear-cut enough for an admin to take unilateral action, that's all. It doesn't in any way imply the article should be kept. I asked him for references on the talk page, but especially considering that this may be self-promotion, I see no reason not to nominate for AfD. I might even AfD the article myself after I've had a chance to check Brent Vaca out, if you don't. Worst case, if he can present references, it can always be kept. AubreyEllenShomo (talk) 17:06, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks!! I just gave it a good 15 minutes and still found nothing, also nothing on the facts claimed (no fight found at Venetian, no Andre Nixon)...left a comment on that talk page. EBY3221 (talk) 17:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, again:) It was nice to meet you too! The silver lining of being a bumbling newbie is that cool admins come along and show you how to fix it. In the real world, no cool admins come along to help fix anything. Though I hope the next time we run across each other, it isn't because I accidentally fubared an entire article's AfD. :D EBY3221 (talk) 18:07, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Template:Uw-afterfinal has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. Anomie 19:42, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

  • I added a "no objection to deletion" comment to the TfD. It was a provisional idea that didn't turn out to be too useful. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 20:20, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Good faith

Hi. While I always try to assume good faith, it's been my long-standing experience that someone who chooses a name like that is an adolescent who has no intention of contributing in a positive manner. So while I do try and spread the Wikilove, I believe that someone who creates such a patently offensive username needs to be called on it. Just my two cents' worth. ACC Advgaurav

Hello! I was curious why you didnt think the username Advgaurav (talk · contribs) was not too similar to Advgauravgoel (talk · contribs)? Thank you for your time, MatthewYeager 09:59, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

  • The first and foremost reason is that I did not have to override the anti-spoofing check. According to my reading of the policy/instructions at WP:ACC/ADMINS, too similar is only a valid response if (1) The wiki bounces the name as too similar, and (2) the account the wiki bounced the name as too similar to has been active (created or edited) within the last year. Since condition #1 did not apply, I didn't take it upon myself to be more strict than the wiki's anti-spoofing measures are. The username was dissimilar enough the user could have created it him/herself without WP:ACC intervention from the login form, assuming they weren't unable to deal with the captcha. (The email address had no prior requests, and the IP's block log was clean, so nothing prevented the user from using the automatic form to create the account, at least from wikipedia's perspective.) I don't see it as my place to reject usernames that aren't rejected by the system. It's silly to have one process (manual) more strict than another (automatic), when the user could easily have used either. It is only my place to decide whether or not to override the anti-spoofing check, as an accountcreator. It isn't my place to reject an acceptable username. Per WP:U, "The [anti-spoofing] program is a bit over-sensitive - if the user name is different enough as to prevent other people from confusing the two users, the account should be approved regardless of how active the existing account is." Of course, if Advgauravgoel (talk · contribs) had tripped the anti-spoofing measure, I would not have overridden it in this case simply because Advgauravgoel (talk · contribs) is too new of an account. The bottom line is that while I am careful about using the technical ability to override a case of "too similar" names, if the names aren't rejected as too similar, I'm not going to add an additional, arbitrary additional layer of rejection. My power is to make the software's checking less strict, not more strict. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 10:21, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Cool, cool. Thank you for the explanation. I didnt realize that wiki would be doing all the "similar" checks for us. I thought we had to throw some judgment calls in there as well. Thank you for the info :D MatthewYeager 10:28, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
  • No problem. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. :) As long as you don't have the "Ignore spoofing checks" box checked when you first try to create the account, the wiki will be more than happy to reject a username as too similar, and provide the name(s) of any and all accounts that are too similar, so they can be checked. Of course, we do have to use judgment when it comes to prior/multiple requests from the IP/email, vandalism from the IP, or blocks, since the ACC process circumvents any blocks and prevents the wiki from enforcing them, but thankfully, the anti-spoof check has to be explicitly overridden, even using the ACC process. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 10:40, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Nice to meet you, by the way.  :) ⇔ ÆS dt @ 10:41, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

(User creation log); 22:21 . . AubreyEllenShomo (Talk | contribs) created new account User:Piratemaribel

Quaeler (talk) 23:17, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes. I did create this user account, via the request an account process, as I have created many others. (This account was request #16250 in the WP:ACC account request queue tool on the toolserver.) I wanted to confirm that I did, indeed, create the account right away for you. I will post another followup with my reasoning for approving the account request once I go through the request again. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 00:14, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
  • The reason I approved the account is as follows: First, I did see this was a bit of a questionable request. The IP the request was from had a lengthy block log, however the block log ended in 2006. I found out why here, where I learned it was in an AOL proxy range that had been blocked indefinitely at the /21 level in late 2006. (The /21 level means 2,048 IP's were blocked all at the same time.) However, because the block covered an entire ISP with who forced its users to use its proxies, I didn't consider this necessarily a reason to drop the request. AOL may host vandals, sure, but they also host good contributors. Many, many users could be behind this IP, and WP:ACC exists to let legitimate users behind blocks like this have a chance at becoming and showing themselves legitimate users. So, I checked the other requests in the system from that particular IP. There were five of them. All five requests had been granted by other accountcreators and none had since been blocked. Based on that, I decided to give the user the benefit of the doubt and create the account. And that's what happened. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 00:26, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Sonny Hopson

Hi Aubrey,

I am creating the Sonny Hopson page however I am not Sonny, I just used his name as a user.

SonnyHopson (talk) 03:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Charles Sutton

Sonny Hopson

1) I made the name change, thank you.

2) Mr. Hopson appears to be one of the few African American Disc Jockeys that tried to do positive things for their community.

I have copies of newspaper articles about Mr. Hopson and how he was the number one DJ in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area for a time. I also have Newspapers articles and reprints of him with Singer Teddy Pendergrass, Sammy Davis Jr., Richard Pryor, Muhammad Ali, and Patty Labelle. I am looking into his claims that he was one of the initiators of getting the FCC to get of track for minorities to have a piece of the broadcast pie. So far I have found some FCC documents showing his group Concerned Communicators did have a positive effect. One of the articles states “During the two years Hopson has been on the airways in Philadelphia, he has enjoyed phenomenal success and has been regarded as the hottest air personality since the disc jockey Georgie Woods…” (I actually think Georgie Woods was more of a community force since he worked with Martin Luther King to bring about change). There is also a movie coming out in 2009 depicting African American disc jockeys and their impact on society, Sonny Hopson is in the movie. How do I site these things?

Also thank you very much for your help... because this Wikipedia is a interesting format.

Thanks for the support!

Thanks for supporting my successful Rfa! Hope to work with you more in the future! I will take into consideration your advice on not cluttering up AIV, too. Thanks!--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 20:11, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Sure. I was glad to support you. A quick distinction, though. You said in your answer you'd report you had made the block on WP:ANI not WP:AIV, at least the first time. The second time, in your answer, you said AIV. WP:ANI, of course, is the Incidents Noticeboard. (WP:AIV being Administrator Intervention Against Vandalism.) A report to AIV that you had blocked someone in a maybe questionable way wouldn't stay long on AIV, since a bot automatically removes all reports of currently blocked users from AIV. That board's only for active vandalsim, after all. (The bot removes blocked users so admins can do more useful things with their time.) Incidents is the sort of place you'd have to bring that kind of thing up, but all I was trying to say is IP vandals are so common, and that kind of block, even with a conflict of interests, since it's soooooo minor, doesn't need to be preemptively brought up somewhere like incidents. Thanks for taking that advice (from a support vote, too). Now, though, that you're an admin, you've got to get your noticeboards straight.  ;) Still glad you got the bit. I think you'll make a great admin. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 03:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Great, thanks for clearing that up for me! I'll keep it in mind. Cheers!--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 04:07, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: Question about my handling of suspicious multiple account requests. (WP:ACC)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It is rather suspicious that they likely both belong to the same person. In the future, rather than leaving notes on the talk pages, if you just want to monitor their behavior. Alternatively, you can send me an email if you encounter this sort of thing again. - Rjd0060 (talk) 15:21, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Leaving the article in articlespace is likely to attract deletion tags. I'd be happy to provide a copy to his userspace so he can continue working on the article under your guidance. Let me know if you think that's a suitable solution. - Mgm|(talk) 20:05, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Definitely agreed on userspace restore. I had suggested he ask someone to do that, actually. I don't see anything wrong with going ahead and doing so. I wasn't asking you to restore the article in the mainspace or anything, as it was it was very speediable. I was just worried that he may feel he was starting over, with the autobiography issue and the sourcing issue, and everthing, in talking to you about the deletion on his talk page, and he may not have a feel for the decentralized nature of wikipedia. I may be making something out of nothing, but I'm worried he's becoming frustrated, and anyone willing to write about mid-1900's musicians from print newspaper articles is someone we want on-board. I was just hoping, while justifying your (proper) delete, you might pull back the autobiography point because I think he's been hit over the head with it, given it was an honest attempt at a 3rd party article not a fluffy autobiography, even though it did have WP:NPOV issues, as well. I'm worried being told for the first time about that again and again because of his username mistake feels for him like we're telling him about his TPS reports. That's all. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 20:26, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. New deal for page patrollers

Hi AubreyEllenShomo,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  1. Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
  2. Editor-focused central editing dashboard
  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.
