[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add or change content, as you did to the article Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, please cite a reliable source for your addition. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for how to cite sources, and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Muhandes (talk) 23:43, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the university itself is a more reliable source when it comes to listing affiliated colleges, and their list should override any other list. Do you have any insight as to why this college is not listed by the affiliating university itself? --Muhandes (talk) 07:00, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I do not have any insight but I know this college personally that it is affiliated by the university. To verify the facts, you may see PDFs from university websites:

http://www.autcbe.ac.in/PdfFiles/Research/d526Approved%20Institutes%20for%20conducting%20rese.pdf http://www.autcbe.ac.in/pdf/Affiliations/college_address_and_ph_no_2011-12_WEB_SITE.pdf

--Aubaskar (talk) 07:56, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That last PDF is a very good source, it seems like an updated list for 2011-2012. I guess they just forgot to update the website. If you feel like it, I think it would be good to go over that PDF and make sure all institutes are listed in the article.--Muhandes (talk) 08:30, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Good suggestion. I have added PDF to this wiki page as citation and updated the numbers. I will also update the complete list of colleges.

Assuming this was you, please remember to log-in in the future :) --Muhandes (talk) 18:09, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sure, I do :) Thanks!

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from College of Engineering, Guindy. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Muhandes (talk) 00:03, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • CEG is one of the oldest technical institutes in the world and academics section does not need any citation. I would like to suggest we may take annauniv.edu itself as citation. Of course, if any part does not conform with its offical website, we can ask external citation. Please advise.--Aubaskar (talk) 05:37, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid the verification poicy does not allow for any fact which is challenged to remain without an inline citation. If you remove a maintenance template, please make sure you handle the problem. You can use whatever reliable source you feel like, as long as it verified the facts.--Muhandes (talk) 07:00, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will use inline citation whenever possible to CEG. Thanks!

Sorry I had to revert your edit, but the page doesn't even mention CEG. Sure, you may know that all of these courses are given in CEG, but that's not a source, that's original research. Sources are there for one and only reason - to verify the facts. If an editor can't use the source to verify, it should not be used. I hope you understand. --Muhandes (talk) 12:33, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Anna University and CEG are used synonymously (CEG is one of the four constituent colleges of Anna University). That is why CEG does not have any separate website and Anna University website itself serves for both. To verify facts about academics section, you can also refer : http://www.tau.edu.in/colleges/colleges_information/001.pdf Can this source be used as reliable source? Thanks!

--Aubaskar (talk) 13:50, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • In India, this is very complex issue with university website especially Anna University.
  1. CEG started in 1794;
  2. Anna University formed by integrating four colleges including CEG in 1978;
  3. Anna University is split into six universities,Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai in 2010.

Anna University, Chennai is not a college itself and it is only accredited university with powers to grant affiliations to colleges under its division. CEG is separete entity (university department or part of Anna University, Chennai) and it is also called Anna University. The above facts can also be verified by cross-checking. I hope this helps. --Aubaskar (talk) 03:31, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am fully aware of the history. I never said [Anna University, Chennai]] is a college, on the contrary, I said it is a university. I thought CEG is some kind of division under Anna University, Chennai, but I do not have a source for it. What I was not aware of is that CEG is now called "Anna University". In fact, it is surprising to hear that considering the history. If it is true, both Anna University, Chennai and Anna University need some serious editing. If you can supply the reliable sources, I can help in achieving this. By the way, if CEG is called "Anna University" what are the other three colleges called? Are they also departments under Anna University, Chennai or did they go under some of the other five? --Muhandes (talk) 20:58, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your understanding. All other three colleges - university departments - are called by their respective names (www.annauniv.edu/aboutus.php). 167 engineering colleges are affiliated by "Anna University of Technology, Chennai" (http://www.annatech.ac.in/). Anna University and Anna University of Technology, Chennai are two separate entities (one is autonomous university having four oldest colleges and other is affiliating university). Actually name is confusing and the real problem lies in: The Website is not updated one (annuniv.edu/ceg is there in booklets but there is no website). "Anna University Chennai" and "Anna University" are one and same (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Anna_University,_Chennai can be be redirected to Anna University).

--Aubaskar (talk) 23:14, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree. Anna University was divided into six universities, one of them being Anna University, Chennai. They cannot be the same thing by definition. The former is the historical institute, now defunct. The latter is the existing institute. But this is beside the point and our discussion. We were discussing CEG, which you claimed to be referred to as "Anna Univesity", and you did not supply any source to that. --Muhandes (talk) 00:12, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I too agree with you from your point of view. What I am really trying to say: we can have reference from annuniv.edu for Academic sections of CEG because CEG does not have separate website. Anna University Chennai website only serves for CEG.

--Aubaskar (talk) 08:43, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

--Aubaskar (talk) 05:14, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had a second look at the sources, and I'm pretty convinced it is not a reliable source, see my argument (and feel free to comment if I'm wrong) here. --Muhandes (talk) 21:14, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry for my oversight. I also found that website is not updated one (some courses are missing; instead of BE and ME, they mentioned B.Tech and M.Tech respectively).

Finally, found the most updated and reliable source for academics section of CEG!!! I hope www.annauniv.edu/pdf/fees2011/ceg.pdf is OK. --Aubaskar (talk) 12:58, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. --Muhandes (talk) 06:05, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
