- Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
- It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
- If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
- Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
- When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
- If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
- Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.
Happy editing! Cheers, Doug Weller talk 16:21, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Did you come here because of a suggestion offwiki?
[edit]I would appreciate you're being frank about this. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 08:12, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- I truly have not, I saw linked in a board/talk page (I forget which), a Reddit post or Twitter thread that I think was referring to info missing or edits made on people's articles. Although I didn't read it other than the title, and that was after I made my account and first edit on Mick West's page.
- The only real info I got was from Matt Ford's podcast, which I personally don't think did a great job of presenting what was actually going on or what the normal processes are for Wikipedia. I have been looking for ways to possibly get involved with this topic in ways that can help bring awareness to what is going on in the US congress, with whistleblowers, in media, etc., so that is my reasoning for attempting to edit.
- Also, I've only made a single edit, which was revoked in less than an hour. The response I've seen from just that are pretty astounding given that I made a pretty innocent sourcing error which was so short lived. I only edited West's page since it was the only one that wasn't locked for me out of the people I was interested in. Atreon (talk) 16:00, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- See below. We don't expect new users to be aware of our policies and guidelines. I hope you read the link you deleted. If you didn't read the edit summary of the deletion, it said " the wikipedia content was analyzing rather than summarizing the cited source. The cited source describes West as an expert on UFO report analysis, and was mostly an interview. Citation requirements are higher for this subject due to WP:BLP and WP:FRIND". I'm going to give you a welcome notice. Doug Weller talk 16:21, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to pseudoscience and fringe science, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

CT for gender related pages
[edit]You have recently made edits related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them. This is a standard message to inform you that gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them is a designated contentious topic. This message does not imply that there are any issues with your editing. Contentious topics are the successor to the former discretionary sanctions system, which you may be aware of. - Can you be more specific about what edit I made related to gender? I've not written anything referring to anyone's gender, at least definitely not intentionally. Very sorry if I did something to upset someone. Atreon (talk) 15:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Mick West's page is related. These alerts are just informative. They are often given to new users who edit in related areas so that they are aware that we are stricter in those areas. Always good to read Talk pages of possibly related areas. Doug Weller talk 16:18, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
