Edit-a-thon
[edit]Thanks for setting up today's event! It was a good idea to provide physical copies of the sources. I'm used to relying on Google Books previews for convenience. Gathering the books up ahead of time seems to really help with the "searching under the lamppost" problem where editors only work on whatever subject's easiest to find info about on the web. --diff (talk) 18:22, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to join Women in Red
[edit] Thank you for creating several articles on women and their works over the past few weeks. We have become aware of your contributions thanks to research undertaken by Bobo.03 at the University of Minnesota. You might be interested in becoming a member of our WikiProject Women in Red where we are actively trying to reduce Wikipedia's content gender gap. If you would like to receive news of our activities without becoming a member, you can simply add your name to our mailing list. In any case, thank you for actively contributing to the coverage of women (currently, just 17.37% of English Wikipedia's biographies).

Images on Wikipedia
[edit]There are large numbers of images uploaded directly to en.Wikipedia, not to commons, including all images used under a claim of fair use. Can we talk about editathon organizer tools?
[edit]Hi Ariel_Cetrone_(WMDC), I’m a product manager at the Wikimiedia Foundation. My team's next assignment is to design and build a tool that will make life easier for people who organize and run editathons. (Here's the project page, which I’ve just inherited from another PM).
I’m reaching out people known to organize editathons to learn more about your process and needs. I’d like to better understand where you most need help and what changes you’d like to see. If that sounds interesting to you, I’d I’d like to set up a time when we might chat via video conference (Google Hangouts). (Looking at the events on this page, I should probably qualify that this project will likely not deal with the typical Women in Red-style event, which we'd term more of an online content drive. The editathons we're focusing on to start with are more the traditional, in-person or online events that have a sign-up list, take place at a specific date and time, etc.)
If you’d like to talk, please send me a contact email where I can reach you and I’ll be in touch. You can reach me here: jmatazzoni[at]wikimedia.org. You might also wish to let me know what time zone you’re in (I’m in California time).
I’m looking forward to learning more about your work! —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 23:59, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Requesting your thoughts about editathon metrics
[edit]Hi Ariel. I’m circling back with some more questions on the editathon tool we talked about. More and better metrics are one likely focus for this project, so I’ve posted some questions about what metrics people like you need on the project talk page.
It would be a big help if you could offer some thoughts at the nearest opportunity. Thanks so much for your help! JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 05:07, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Reuse of your slides from WP:WMDC-BHL
[edit]Hi@Ariel Cetrone (WMDC): Thank you and your co-presenter for a wonderful presentation today (Yes, it was 1am-5am 14 March 2019 for me). I was wondering whether you would object to the re-use of your slides (from slide 27 onwards, with attribution of course) to introduce others to wikipedia editing. I have booked a local room in the hopw that I can persuade/teach others to edit, and your slides are incomparably better than anything I have managed to prepare so far. (Anyway whatever your views on this, I again want to thank you for an extraordinary and extraordinarily good workshop today.) Regards, MargaretRDonald (talk) 23:01, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Categories
[edit]Hello. Few minor points on your recent creation of Category:African American Suffragists. If you browsed the appropriate categories you'd see that the convention in the Category:African-American people hierarchy is to hyphenate AA. Also category names follow normal sentence capitalisation. And perhaps most importantly, categories are not simple metatags, they are part of a hierarchy and should always be categorised themselves. Also more generally, be wary of WP:OVERCATEGORIZATION, 3-5 categories are enough for most articles although biographies often have more; and you should avoid WP:SMALLCATs, a good category has 30-200 members. Non-existent categories
[edit]Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Hybla Valley, Virginia, please make sure that the category page actually exists. In some cases, it may be appropriate to create a new category in accordance with Wikipedia's categorization guidelines, but it is usually better to use the most specific available existing category. It is never appropriate to leave a page categorised in a non-existent category, i.e. one whose link displays in red. You may find it helpful to use the gadget HotCat, which tests whether a category exists before saving a change. Thank you. . --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:26, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

NMWA Black Artists Matter, event time?

[edit]On 8 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ester Wajcblum, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Ester Wajcblum and other Jewish prisoners of Auschwitz smuggled gunpowder out of a munitions plant and successfully destroyed a crematorium at Birkenau during the Sonderkommando revolt? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ester Wajcblum. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Ester Wajcblum), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Speedy deletion nomination of Diana Sierra
[edit]A tag has been placed on Diana Sierra requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I've updated the article to reflect her place as the first woman from Punjab to receive a medical degree.-Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 16:40, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ariel -- There looks to be a fascinating story here; I hope the article survives, but I'm glad I read about her even if it doesn't! Are any of the other AfD'd articles about women? I've had luck appealing to the WP:Women in Red project for assistance when articles on notable women get taken to AfD. There are several librarians there who are excellent at ferreting out information. Unfortunately I don't know of a similar resource for articles about other topics. Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 23:30, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, Espresso Addict. I hope it sticks, too. We lose too many articles this way, especially those about women. The other articles in question are about women as well. They are Michelle Zatlyn and Cashmere Nicole. Some sources for Zatlyn's article are stronger than others, but I truly believe she is notable. The article has only been up for a few months and gets an average of 5,000 views per month. The other article cites very well-known sources, but has also been criticized. I'd greatly appreciate any help with adding these to Women in Red if they are not already there.-Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 23:41, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I don't work in the area of business at all so I don't really feel comfortable wading in with these. They both looked to be tagged for women-related projects and the women's deletion list, which is very useful -- if a bit of a soul-destroying read. It's hard with businesspeople (younger men as well) to work out exactly what constitutes notability; there isn't much (any?) guidance and so many of the published profiles are quite promotional in feel. There's an upcoming WiR event on businesswomen in Africa which I fear is going to result in a lot of good-faith work hitting the speedy queue. Espresso Addict (talk) 00:53, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

- Hi Alexandermcnabb. I created the article prior to Wikimedia DC's History of 19th Century African American Education Edit-a-thon. It was left intentionally 'light', yet good enough for a stub, so that new editors could gain experience by expanding it. It continues to be included on our work lists for future events. It's also in my personal 'wheelhouse' and I hope to get back to it once time permits. Hopefully, your tag will attract some additions as well.-Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 12:49, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Héctor Rodríguez (activist) moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, Héctor Rodríguez (activist), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Interesting topic, although there are more RS that are not currently featured in the article that needed to be added in. When an article of this size has a source reused 6 times, that's a good sign you need to diversify your sources a bit more. Try using these:

Would you review my draft from recent edit-a-thon
[edit]Hi Ariel, I was unable to attend the Women in Environmental Justice editathon in person, but I wanted to contribute remotely. I made a draft entry for one of the women on the list. The instructions say to have you review it for publication. Would you be able to do that? Thank you! https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Brenda_Richardson Sonoet2 (talk) 13:23, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Sonoet2. Thanks so much for creating the article. I made a few edits (reorganized sections and removed language that could be seen by some as promotional). I do not see any sources that mention the awards she's won and we can't site LinkedIn. I've added a 'citation needed' tag there. I believe it is ready to be moved to Wikipedia mainspace. The instructions to do so are on the event page. There is a chance that this article could be flagged for deletion or moved back to draft form due to notability concerns. It happens more with articles about women. Please copy the text and save in your Sandbox or a separate document. This will make it easier to recover if need be. To access your sandbox, select the person icon (top right), select Sandbox, then 'Edit'. Paste text and publish. Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 14:04, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

History of Statistics Edit-a-thon on 8 Dec 2023
[edit]Hi Ariel, I saw here that there's an upcoming virtual event: History of Statistics Edit-a-thon, Friday, December 8, 2023, 3-5pm ET (tentative). Does it include new editor training? If yes, does the editor have to be a member of a particular organization? Thanks! -- Rosiestep (talk) 09:11, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Rosiestep. I don't have have much information on this one yet, but it's usually only for their members and includes training. I do have another event scheduled for Friday, 11/17. It's somewhat private, but we can welcome a few outsiders if you have some people in mind. I don't want to post registration here publicly, but if you're interested, I'll send you the link. LMK. Edit-a-thon at Aurora Hills library
[edit]Ariel, we really appreciated you running the Edit-a-thon on Women's Biographies at Aurora Hills library. It was fun learning about the wiki process, both the practical and philosophical aspects. I think everyone finished the class with a good foundation for editing/creating articles, and a better appreciation of Wikipedia's mission. Thank you! Cn325 (talk) 15:56, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Georgetown editathon
[edit]Hi there, Ariel, and thank you for all your efforts in connection with the recent Georgetown editathon. My attention was drawn to the event by this article in The Georgetown Voice. I was particularly impressed by your slide show which could serve as a model for future presentations with an emphasis on women. More useful from a practical point of view was Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Georgetown University Wikipedia Edit-a-thon for Women’s History Month which provided an opportunity to see what the participants had actually been doing. I found one editor who has since been active in creating biographies of women but was unable to find much activity from most of the others (although I see you've been spending some time yourself on improving some of the drafts and moving them to article space). I think Rosiestep will be interested to see everything you have been doing in this connection too. Please keep us informed of any future presentations along these lines. I'm always happy to help newbies along, particularly if they are interested in writing about women. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 16:31, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Ipigott. Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you liked the slides. As Institutional Partnerships Manager for Wikimedia DC, I lead between 25 and 30 edit-a-thons a year, most of which include trainings. The slidedeck has evolved over the years, but I've gotten it to a place where it works well for our purposes.
- About 75% of our events are women-focused. You can see a list of past and future events on our meetup page as well as our website. Some program outcomes from past events can be found in the dashboard.
- We just wrapped up our first busy season for the year, but we will have a handful of events in late spring. Our next women-focused virtual edit-a-thon will take place in June and be presented in partnership with the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum. The date will be made public in the next few weeks. Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 18:18, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping, Ipigott. These are indeed great links and kudos to Ariel for her work in this regard! (JFYI and for transparency... even though I no longer serve on its board, I remain connected with Ariel and others in the WMDC community.) --Rosiestep (talk) 18:47, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ariel. I am aware of all the efforts the Smithsonian continue to devote to women and look forward to your June event.--Ipigott (talk) 19:53, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Chee Chin S. Cheung Lee
[edit]Hello Ariel Cetrone (WMDC),
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Chee Chin S. Cheung Lee for deletion, because it's a redirect from an article title to a namespace that's not for articles.
If you don't want Chee Chin S. Cheung Lee to be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Vanderwaalforces (talk) 21:21, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi User:Vanderwaalforces - The article was created by a new editor during an edit-a-thon co-hosted by us (Wikimedia DC). There was some confusion on the part of the new editor as to what was allowed, formatting, etc., so I moved it back to draft. This event has ended, and I think they're done working on it. I'l probably wind up fixing it myself in the near future. Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 21:36, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there. That’s makes sense. Thanks! Vanderwaalforces (talk) 00:05, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
