WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New Page Reviewer granted

Hello Argento Surfer. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Alex ShihTalk 16:43, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I have declined your CSD A7 nomination of this article simply because the criteria only applies to real people, animals, organisations, bands and events - not sports complexes. (I realise whether you count that as an "organisation" or a "building" can be debatable, but it's best to err on the side of not tagging). Also "No indication of notability" is irrelevant for this criteria. Did you mean to file a debate at Articles for deletion instead? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:32, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

You're correct - I thought it fell under organization. I also meant to say "No indication of significance" - I blame muscle memory for that one. I'll pass on the AfD for now - User:Eaak79 is clearly still working on it, and it's much improved from its initial state. Argento Surfer (talk) 16:38, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Similarly, CSD declined for Matthew William Davies, who has an entry in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:34, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I see you added the banner head to the Tex article. I've expanded on the sources so its not just from one book now, but three! is that enough to remove the banner? :) Andrzejbanas (talk) 02:57, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi! Can I remove the "Connected contributor" message on the above page? I'd been drafting this for a week or so, and while I can see he's started it, my version has kind of entirely replaced it. Is that a valid thing to do? Da-rb (talk) 21:14, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

Doom Patrol and Fantastic Four

Sorry to dredge up ancient history, but I'm puzzled by this edit you made five years ago, in which you removed the sources without removing the claim. The edit summary only leaves me more confused, so I'm wondering if you could explain this.--NukeofEarl (talk) 13:17, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

@NukeofEarl: Best guess, I thought the sources weren't reliable - at least two of them are user forums. Removing only part of the claim was probably just an oversight. Argento Surfer (talk) 13:25, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

DYK for X-Men Gold

On 7 August 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article X-Men Gold, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 2017 comics series X-Men Gold and X-Men Blue take their titles from a storyline from the early 1990s? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, X-Men Gold), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 16,991 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Technology update:

  • Rentier has created a NPP browser in WMF Labs that allows you to search new unreviewed pages using keywords and categories.

General project update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement the autoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and not tagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided by Earwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use with this user script.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Discussion of the wiki page 'Cross Bet Type All Up' & 'Double (Horse Racing Terminology)'

Hi Argento,

Nice to meet you here, I'm writing to request keeping those pages in wikipedia. Because there are many existing wikipedia pages which are related to sport betting. In regard to 'Cross Bet Type All Up', I am just mentioned the part of mechanic and regulation of 'Cross Bet Type All Up' in Hong Kong and I am still waiting other wiki editors to write additional info on it. Suppose that this page would have more info which is including international sport betting mechanic and regulation, not only Hong Kong. The'Double (Horse Racing Terminology)' as well, please wait for a moments.

Have a nice day!

Regards, --CDXs (talk) 04:03, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@CDXs: If you'd like to contest the deletion, you can remove the PROD template yourself. However, I strongly encourage you to expand these articles yourself instead of waiting for other editors to jump in. Argento Surfer (talk) 13:40, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best man (or woman) win! The Mitchell Bailey AfD - thx for catching the COI. I had not noticed it before. Hi, I hope it's ok with you that I that I added a week by week table for the issues, I know not many other editors use that format so I felt I should check if you think it's ok that I add them to articles created by others.★Trekker (talk) 18:38, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

I'm not usually a big fan of them, but I think this is a case where it could be informational because (I don't think) the issues came out on a regular schedule. Having the release dates will give readers a better sense of gaps between release. The sales figures are a nice touch, too.
Tables can be particularly helpful in cases like Lazarus (comics), where there were long, unscheduled delays that impacted sales. Argento Surfer (talk) 18:54, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Yeah that Lazarus (comics) table is really good.★Trekker (talk) 19:33, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.

The Adventurers Wiki

Hey... Saw your talk feedback (hope I am doing this right) - about migrating the page into Aircel comics... At this point the entire Wikipedia creation experience has been a nightmare, I've given up on it. So, it is what it is... and if I could I'd just delete the account (but apparently that's not possible). Ah well. Lesson learned. SirTawmis (talk) 02:32, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Hey! Thanks for the reply! The problem is, as you mentioned, The Adventurers Comic started off being published by a small company called "Adventure Comics" before "Aircel Comics" came along and picked up the publication of the comic with issue #3. So, as a result, because it was the 80's, and it was an "obscure" comic, finding "validating information" like you had requested, is pretty much going to be next to impossible. So the idea of that Wiki page ever meeting the "standards" is never going to happen. SirTawmis (talk) 19:08, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Help with a hostile WP:Comics editor

Hey Argento Surfer,

Would you be able to stop by the 2014 Punisher series article and offer some more feedback? The article needs improvement, but its creator is reverting my cleanup edits and engaging with me in a hostile manner. Thanks much. Idea

Hi Argento, just an idea, but I wanted to suggest you could exceptionally try something like this [[1]]. Best wishes, Moisejp (talk) 00:39, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

@Moisejp: - not a bad idea. I added it to the template at the 2018 wikicup as well. It won't actually qualify for the competition, but I'm hoping it gets attention anyway. Argento Surfer (talk) 13:31, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

V for Vendetta (film) and Moore being uncredited

I'm not going to make an issue of your reinserting Moore (though I can't guarantee that other editors won't), but did want to note that when I reviewed the linked thread you provided in your edit summary, it seemed to taper off without reaching a clear consensus. I don't really care whether his name is or isn't mentioned, though I lean toward infoboxes only including credited roles. It might be worth revisiting the issue to see whether a clear consensus can be reached on how to approach this, and perhaps similar/future cases that might arise. Or not. New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Help : review article

Hi Let me introduce myself. I am Felix and I’m a novice in Wikipedia ! I wrote an article recently, it’s a biography of a french-american journalist : Laura Haim. Now, I’m waiting for validation from wikipedian reviewer. Would you be able to help me? I have no idea how long it could take… https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Laura_Haim Many thanks for your help. Best

Felix Billybon (talk) 16:57, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Felix. I looked over the draft, and I spotted a few issues. Some will be easy to fix, some not so easy.
  • The section "Early life" is empty. It should be removed or something should be added to it.
  • The end of the first paragraph in "Career" appears to end with an improperly formatted citation.
  • References 1-7 appear to have been copied from the text of a French article instead of the code. The links and some formatting are missing.
  • The career section is presented as a list of facts instead of an article. I suggest combining some of the separate thoughts into larger paragraphs. Adding some transitional language (After that, While there) will help the flow.
  • "To the surprise of many" is what we call a weasel word. It's when a vague term is used to make a claim seem more or less significant than plain language might. In this case, you should be clear about who the many are. Specify the name(s) of the people who expressed surprise, or rewrite it to indicate that "News Source XYZ said many people were surprised".
I hope this helps. Feel free to leave another message after these issues are addressed. Argento Surfer (talk) 17:12, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

GA Review Help

Thanks for agreeing to mentor me (somehow in reading things over I missed the existence of that program until rereading it later, which I admit to not be the most auspicious start for my GA review efforts). I have done my preliminary assessment of an article at Talk:United States Climate Alliance/GA1. I feel like I'm missing some tools of the trade in doing my review and probably passed some sections that a more experienced review wouldn't have - but since I don't know what I don't know any guidance would be appreciated. A particular place I could use some guidance on is 6b which feels like doesn't apply to this particular article. Thanks for your help in improving my skills. Barkeep49 (talk)

@Barkeep49: GA reviews are usually low-stress and we all learn it as we go, so don't worry about the learning curve. There are also many methods for reviews, so keep in mind that anything I suggest is what works for me. For this particular one, would you like me to leave comments here or directly on the review? Argento Surfer (talk) 16:49, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
I would defer to you about which place makes more sense. Thanks again. Barkeep49 (talk)

Hark Hark

Could you take a look at Hark, Hark! The Dogs Do Bark. I would like a second opinion/help with evaluating criterion 2c and 3b. For 3b I'm particularly interested in thoughts on the origins section. For 2c, I'm wondering about some cases of possible synthesis (which I have posed as questions to the nominator) but also editorial commentary that can be found, for example, in the footnotes for sources 24 & 25. Barkeep49 (talk) 21:25, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

@Barkeep49: I'm happy to take a look, but I'll be offline until Wednesday. Argento Surfer (talk) 19:23, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Damnation (comics)

On 25 March 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Damnation (comics), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Damnation (comics). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Damnation (comics)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. DYK nomination of The Infinity Gauntlet

Hello! Your submission of The Infinity Gauntlet at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Andrew D. (talk) 18:43, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

I've been through it in detail now and I've been enjoying the book too. For example, I notice a Trump hotel being destroyed when a tidal wave hits Atlantic City – that guy gets everywhere. But I've raised some specific issues at the DYK nomination so please take another look. It's nothing too serious and I'll turn round updates more quickly now that I've got into it. We're in the final straight now, I trust.... Andrew D. (talk) 22:10, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
