WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hi there, is there any chance we can work out our differences here without continuing our disagreement on the Albania page. I would love it if we could work together to improve this encyclopaedia. Regards - Ottomanist (talk) 00:17, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Disruption

This edit of yours is highly disruptive as you deleted sourced content. That being said as you have received ARBMAC warnings regarding Skanderbeg-related topics, it'd be prudent to avoid such edits. Btw if you can't contribute in English just avoid editing as contributions like men left despot's forces after despot's defeat only lower the article's (already low) quality.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 14:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Will you please be so kind to present the sourced assertion which I deleted?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 05:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
There's nothing related to NPA regarding comments about proper prose. You removed the alliance with Venice and I let you know about the article in order to avoid any unnecessary discussion afterwards. Of course feel free to add anything that I may neglect to include.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 20:03, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
The source says that "none of these figures actually mobilized to help Venice militarily", i.e. there was no alliance with Venice. Your accusation was unjustified. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

George Strez Balšić

Unresolved

George Castriot, surnamed Scanderbeg, king of Albania, p. 20: "But these domestic intrigues were, for a while, interrupted by the weight and importance of foreign affairs ; for war was declared against George, Lord of Misia, commonly called the Despot of Servia. It is said that Amurath was induced by two ..." Is this true? And where exactly did Misia lie, which towns and forts did it have, it would be great if a map was added.--Zoupan 14:42, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

I should have noted that. But what possessions did the Balšić brothers have?--Zoupan 15:09, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
I agree. No problem, its just copyediting.
  • Schmitt 2005, p. 167: "Die von den Balsici beherrschten Gebiete zwischen Kruja und der Küste"
  • Gopčević 1914, p. 74: "in Misia(1)" - there is a footnote, but I can't see it.
- no idea what it says
Just received your reply, interesting. Is there not even one map of medieval Albania during the League of Lezhe by any scholar?--Zoupan 15:41, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Kruje-Shkoder region makes the districts of Shkodër, Pukë, Lezhë, Mirditë, Kurbin possible, and Zaharia held Sati and Dagnum, and Spani held mountains behind Drivasto. In the vicinity, there is a "Mise" and "Myselimi" in Postribë. "Mushan" in Dajç. And some more toponyms which might be connected, but nothing can be known without scholarship. Elsie does not explain where Misia is.--Zoupan 16:29, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Revolt of 1432

I've been writing for some time an article on the event, so please don't add yet another article with disconnected sentences etc. on the mainspace, but wait for me to finish and then add whatever it is that you think that I haven't written. --— ZjarriRrethues — talk 00:12, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you please present a link to the draft which you started in your userspace?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 05:55, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I always work offline and I have written an almost complete article, so please don't add on mainspace your draft, not to mention that there's nothing about it that's not included in what I've already written.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 07:32, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
It is obviously impossible to verify your claim about the draft you started since it is in offwiki space. You expect me to AGF in your case which is not easy because:
  1. your request is unnecessary harsh (so please don't add yet another article with disconnected sentences etc.)
  2. this is not the first time you write me comments like this (i.e. diff). It was described as incivility and you were warned not to engage in further ethno-nationalist tendentious editing ...misrepresenting sources .... in incivility or personal attacks.
  3. you yourself started two articles in the mainspace right after I started drafts in my userspace (link).
Will you please be so kind and reply to my above question which hopefully help me to AGF in your case and respect your request.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 08:41, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Would you care to participate in the discussion concerning the removal of Stefan Lazarevic from the template on the Battle of Ankara article? --Kansas Bear (talk) 00:49, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

71.178.108.23 latest additions to the Battle of Ankara would appear to be original research. His sentence, "Also, his role in the battle was differently interpreted: he was commanding right flank [13] or not being seen in commanding role."[14][15]
  • 14. "History of the Byzantine State", does not mention Stefan Lazarevic, nor does it mention any other commanders under Bayezid and only mentions the battle in passing. This source needs a quote for verification.
  • 15. "The Turkish empire: its growth and decay", by Baron George Shaw-Lefevre Eversley.
1.I am very interested in this Baron George Shaw Levevre Eversley's qualifications.
2.The book does NOT state that Stefan Lazarevic wasn't in command of the left wing. Nor does it state anyone else being in command of the left wing.[1]
3.Copyrighted in 1917, where methodology and historiography come into question.
Odd how The Cambridge Medieval History volumes 1-5, By J.B. Bury, [2], states Stephen of Serbia was in command of his own troops and formed the left wing. --Kansas Bear (talk) 02:54, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 July newsletter

We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees New York City Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. August 2012

Your recent editing history at Religion in Albania shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. Fut.Perf. 19:31, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Pavle Đurišić. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. --PRODUCER (TALK) 16:04, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

WP:NPA

This edit contained comment about me. There is a policy which says: Comment on content, not on the contributor.. Please be so kind and comment on the content, not me.----Rereward (talk) 09:05, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Excuse me for butting in here, but what..? That is not a "comment on the contributor" in any meaningful sense, or a comment to which a WP:NPA warning is relevant. (It's certainly no more of a WP:NPA violation than several of your own comments on the same page.) Bishonen | talk 10:25, 5 September 2012 (UTC).
No problem, thank you for helping here. As a newer user, I am all about learning and have been learning much from Antid who gave me this NPA warning, to which my reaction was also "What ..? That was not a comment on the contributor in any meaningful sense or a comment to which a WP:NPA warning seems relevant — But since he is so experienced a user, he must be illustrating both the standard and the method of how to address it." Perhaps you can assist me to understand the difference between his NPA warning and mine? I want to make sure I am a responsible editor. I'm all ears.--Rereward (talk) 10:43, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
No, there's no difference. Antidiskriminator's warning to you wasn't warranted either. (The only difference is that I didn't see that one. :-) ) Bishonen | talk 12:52, 5 September 2012 (UTC).
Thank you. Lessons learned. I acknowledge that neither warning was warranted and will do my part to avoid similar issues in the future. Matter resolved on my end.--Rereward (talk) 13:20, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

This reference gives further evidence of sarcasm and charges of absurdity. Please exercise civility.--Rereward (talk) 20:48, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Rereward, frankly, I think you're focusing too much on things you don't like about the way Antidiskriminator speaks to you. Please try to look past that to whatever point it is that's being made, because I don't find AD's tone any different from what's normal all over this site. It might be agreeable if there was never ever the slightest tinge of sarcasm in talkpage comments and edit summaries, but, well, as long as the comments aren't sneering and unpleasant, it tends to be regarded as acceptable. And if you think AD was sneering at you in the conversation you linked or the edit summary you quoted there, I think you might be overinterpreting his wording. Please think about it. Bishonen | talk 21:35, 5 September 2012 (UTC).
Thanks, Bishonen. Good advice. Antid is clearly brilliant and also incredibly helpful when choosing to answer questions specifically on the discussion pages. Still, do not bite the newcomers is a good idea that will only help Antid to allow others to hear his usually excellent arguments.--Rereward (talk) 22:03, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Re: WikiProject Serbia

Hello,

These are very interesting questions, but they are also hard to answer.

Big number of unassessed articles. Indeed, almost 3,000. Also, quite probably, a sizable number of untagged articles. ([4][5][6]). This should be treated like a backlog, really. Article assessment is not a straightforward task, so it is naturally suited to more experienced editors. Plan: find some candidates, give them a tool or two, initiate project-wide discussions whenever something's doubtful, try to generate awareness and interest in the wider circle of editors. And hard work, of course...

Lack of editors who are active in the project. Same problem for WP Croatia, obviously: less than 30 active members. Fortunately, some of them are really outstanding contributors, and I guess this is what compensates for the lack of brute force. No easy solutions here. Plan: identify non-members who contribute within the scope and invite them, and motivate members to contribute more. The members should be aware of each other's work, the project's page should advertise it - this is a powerful motivation.

Introduction of formal assessment procedures. My guess is the less formal the better, especially in the beginning. Whether the project needs e.g. an assessment subpage is anyone's guess, it's hard to say. It's important for members to be aware of assessment process, even if they are themselves not familiar with the mechanism - they could always inquire in the project's talk page ("Hey, I've just written an article about XY, how would you assess it?").

Any other thing you think could help WikiProject Serbia. I like DYKs. (And so do you, apparently...) It is gratifying for the editor, it is good for Wikipedia as a very strong generator of above-average quality content, and it is good for the project (content, visibility, cooperation, motivation). DYK collaborations between two or more editors are great. I wish more people did DYKs. GregorB (talk) 14:06, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Sources, copyvio, POV

Apart from the outdated sources that you shouldn't have been using either way and the use of out of context quotes from some sources, you've misrepresented almost every quote you've used. As examples I've added the quotes you've used from Buda's work on the talkpage. Also you can't copy almost half a page from Inalcik as that's WP:COPYVIO. Btw the actual info about Pal stops very quickly and from there it reads almost as a copy from Gjon Kastrioti, so that should be trimmed to the essentials.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 21:35, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Request to desist from WP:WIKIHOUNDING of User:Peacemaker67

G'day Antidiskriminator. Given our previous and ongoing interactions at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia and Pavle Djurisic, I consider your recent appearance at Operation Southeast Croatia and your comments there (reflecting your perception of events at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia) are a classic case of WP:WIKIHOUNDING. I appreciate there is some overlap in the articles we are interested in, but you have not previously shown any interest in Operation Southeast Croatia, or any of the Seven Enemy Offensives. Your decision to oppose the recent move there (in retrospect after consensus had been achieved for the move, which is consistent with the approach User:DIREKTOR and myself have taken to the Seven Enemy Offensives articles over several months), appears on face value to be an attempt to follow my edits to cause me distress, and gives rise to the suspicion it is being done out of revenge for a perceived slight because you have not been able to gain consensus for your preferred move at Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia. The move of Operation Southeast Croatia is not clearly a violation of WP policy, which would be your only possible excuse for following my edits (and move) at that article. Your behaviour is disrupting my enjoyment of editing for no overriding reason that is acceptable on WP. I am happy to continue to discuss the move with you at Talk:Operation Southeast Croatia, as I do not want you to feel that I am using this request as a means of circumventing discussion there, but I must warn you that any future appearance by you on articles that I am actively contributing to, but you have not shown any interest in before (in the sense of opposing my editing without an overriding reason), will be reported immediately as WP:WIKIHOUNDING. I would like to work collaboratively with you, but given our interactions so far on WP that does not appear likely at present. I am asking for a commitment from you that you will not repeat this behaviour. Thanks, Peacemaker67 (talk) 01:05, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Peacemaker67, do not accuse others for WP:WIKIHOUNDING when you do that yourself to others. Nemambrata (talk) 12:26, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Re: Moba

Well, I'm sure if either of the two projects sets up a drive and invites members of the other to pitch in - there would be help offered. I, for one, would definitely lend a hand. Setting up a drive with achievable objectives (along with an invitation to help) would, IMHO, ensure that the process goes smoothly and that it improves the project as designed.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:41, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Arbitration enforcement request - please respond immediately

It's come to my attention that you are the subject of a WP:AE request, as some of your edits fall under the jurisdiction of WP:ARBMAC, an arbitration case relating to Macedonia. Please respond immediately; if you ignore this message too, you risk being blocked from editing, as there will be nobody to defend your side of the case. --Rschen7754 02:10, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

See the result of the enforcement request here. You are banned indefinitely from the topic of Pavle Đurišić on all pages of Wikipedia. A one-year freeze has been imposed on any new move proposals for Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia. The ban may be appealed to the closing administrator, to AE or to Arbcom in the usual way. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 20:07, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Help with the assessment

There is a tool that could help with the unassessed WP Serbia articles. The idea is to find articles which are unassessed by WP Serbia, yet are already assessed by some other project. So, for example:

For these articles, the existing class could be copied to WP Serbia banner. Note however that not all assessments are reliable: e.g. Timok (river), assessed as B, is a bit thin in referencing and looks more like a C class.

With the same tool one can also find articles that were assessed by WP Serbia as X, and by some other project as Y (Y<>X). These cases can be inspected further then. GregorB (talk) 17:31, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

No problem... Unfortunately, assessment can't be made easy, and that's why every bit of help is useful. GregorB (talk) 18:08, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, there are no clear rules regarding importance (and that's part of what I meant when I said it "can't be made easy"). Generally speaking:
  • Rivers will probably range from high to low
  • Mountains too: very prominent ones are "high", important ones "mid", merely notable ones "low"
  • Cities (for Croatia, this means that every designated city) are at least "mid". These are chiefly settlements with population of more than 5000, so villages and remaining towns are invariably assessed as "low".
To me, the difference between "mid" and "low" is best explained as follows:
Importance assessment Mid Low
Could be described as... Important Notable, but not important
Average native person has heard of it and knows something about it Very likely Probably not
Likely to appear in a national paper encyclopedia Very likely Somewhat likely to very unlikely
Note: this is my personal "yardstick" rather than an official policy (there is none). And it is subjective after all, it can't be helped. GregorB (talk) 21:46, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I thought there might be some official policy but I guess it is normal that importance is in the eye of the beholder.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 21:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
This tool works for start class articles.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:12, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Although I generally agree with the above, there's a possible source of "inspiration" at Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Assessment#Importance scale - tailored to Germany, but you'll get the picture.--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:31, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Tomobe03. Maybe it would be good to create similar subpage on WPS or WPCro with similar guidelines in order to reduce possibility of non consistency of future ratings.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:51, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Maybe, but there's no pressing need for those unless considerable numbers of editors perform such ratings - in which case their efforts need be coordinated. On the quality rating subject, I took a look at Politikin Zabavnik (rated B): I'd say it's close to B, but at least some references are missing - a B-Class article should be fully referenced using inline citations, but some paras in that one lack citations. If I were you I'd tag it as a C and add {{cn}} tags where necessary (not as criticism per se, but pointers what need be added).--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:22, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, both in case of Politikin Zabavnik (where I copied B class rating from WP Comics) and in case of "considerable numbers of editors" who perform such ratings. In order to attract more editors to resolve this huge backlog of unassessed articles I had an idea, besides 'moba' idea, to organize some kind of competition (diff). What do you think about it?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 11:40, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

If there are that many editors (presumably some of them misguided although acting in good faith), a review of some of the assessments may be useful. Wikiproject Good Articles employs a system (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/June-July 2012) where 80% of GA reviews are themselves reviewed. In this case, that need not be that comprehensive, as I suspect it would be beneficial to have more experienced editors revisit 100% of those articles rated as B-Class and a couple of those assessed as C-Class by an individual editor performing the assessments. The reason for the former is to verify if something has been missed (that's possible even if a fairly experienced editor performed the rating) and the latter to take a look if a C-Class rating was applied too conservatively (or conceivably too relaxed) and advise that specific editor or even inspect more of their rating-edits if need be. Involving more editors in the drive will invariably lead to more work done and more erroneous ratings applied, but it is important to involve as many as possible and to devise a verification system to ensure that all the work amounts to an objective result allowing the wikiproject to develop more efficiently (i.e. map out a route to more featured and good content).--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, rating verification system is a good idea and developing wikiproject (involving more editors in the drive to resolve unassessed articles backlog is probably just one of many ways to do it) to have more featured and good content is what is most important. Thank you for your suggestions. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 12:51, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

  1. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)
  2. Canada Sasata (submissions)
  3. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions)
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions)
  5. New York City Muboshgu (submissions)
  6. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions)
  7. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions)
  8. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. Edits

I hadn't noticed that you had added back your POV oversimplifaction regarding the Spani family without a consensus in March, but apparently Gaius did notice it, so it'd be prudent to continue on the talkpage. That being said, why did you try to add your views about Sinë on Skanderbeg? You proposed your OR a few months ago, but it was rejected on the talkpages. It'd be prudent to stick to consensus and not try to add back your views whenever you consider the "opposition" to them to be minimal. They may not be noticed immediately, but eventually they are and they serve as an issue of disruption.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 22:35, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

With Regard to the Inclusion of Serbs under the List of "Victims" within "The Holocaust" Template

This is what Diana wrote in response to my most recent post on the “Talk” page of “The Holocaust” template: “I will not be reponding on this topic any further, but will continue to watch.” I am rather offended that she would come along and erase “Ethnic Serbs” from the list of “Victims” and then decide to not participate in our argument when she can’t produce a response to my post. Clearly, “a holocaust” – at the very least – was perpetrated against the Serbs, alongside Jews and Romani in the Independent State of Croatia.

In my opinion, the so-called peacemaker is being a troublemaker. He’s not at all confronting any of my arguments because he simply cannot. What I believe we must do is specify that what is meant by “Victims” in the template of interest is the wider spectrum of Holocaust victims, which includes ethnic Serbs. Before we do that, however, I suggest we get a logical and sensible Wikipedia editor to come in and tell all of them (Peacemaker, Dianna, etc.) that their argument is totally flawed and that ethnic Serbs should be included under the list of “Victims”. That will further legitimize our planned edit.

Thanks!

Tulipsword (talk) 00:11, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Tulipsword. It's not that I can't produce a response; it's that the discussion is going around in circles and has become a waste of my editing time. I see you have no other on-wiki activities that you wish to pursue, but I certainly do, and choose to do those things rather than participate any further in a non-productive discussion. -- Dianna (talk) 01:14, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Fringe

This is one extremely fringe claim that you added[7]. It doesn't matter if it got published by someone that you consider RS, it still is completely fringe, so don't add it back in any kind of context. Btw if you're interested in the Albanian flag you might want to check the one used by Grudans against the Montenegrins in 1879-81[8] among other surviving ones.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 09:56, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Notice of Dispute resolution discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute in which you may have been involved. Content disputes can hold up article development, therefore we are requesting your participation to help find a resolution. The thread is "Template talk:The Holocaust (Inclusion of Serbs in template)".

Guide for participants

If you wish to open a DR/N filing, click the "Request dispute resolution" button below this guide or go to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/request for an easy to follow, step by step request form.

What this noticeboard is:
  • It is an early step to resolve content disputes after talk page discussions have stalled. If it's something we can't help you with, or is too complex to resolve here, our volunteers will point you in the right direction.
What this noticeboard is not:
  • It is not a place to deal with the behavior of other editors. We deal with disputes about article content, not disputes about user conduct.
  • It is not a place to discuss disputes that are already under discussion at other dispute resolution forums.
  • It is not a substitute for the talk pages: the dispute must have been discussed extensively on a talk page (not just through edit summaries) before resorting to DRN.
  • It is not a court with judges or arbitrators that issue binding decisions: we focus on resolving disputes through consensus, compromise, and explanation of policy.
Things to remember:
  • Discussions should be civil, calm, concise, neutral, and objective. Comment only about the article's content, not the other editors. Participants who go off-topic or become uncivil may be asked to leave the discussion.
  • Let the other editors know about the discussion by posting {{subst:drn-notice}} on their user talk page.
  • Sign and date your posts with four tildes "~~~~".
  • If you ever need any help, ask one of our volunteers, who will help you as best as they can. You may also wish to read through the FAQ page located here and on the DR/N talkpage.

Please take a moment to review the simple guide and join the discussion. Thank you! EarwigBot operator / talk 15:40, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 starting soon

Hi there; you're receiving this message because you have previously shown interest in the WikiCup. This is just to remind you that the 2013 WikiCup will be starting on 1 January, and that signups will remain open throughout January. Old and new Wikipedians and WikiCup participants are warmly invited to take part in this year's competition. (Though, as a note to the more experienced participants, there have been a few small rules changes in the last few months.) If you have already signed up, let this be a reminder; you will receive a message with your submissions' page soon. Please direct any questions to the WikiCup talk page. Thanks! J Milburn 19:24, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2013 WikiCup!

Hello Antidiskriminator, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The competition begins at midnight UTC. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders: *The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page. *Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started the review in 2013.) We will be checking. *If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself. *Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens. *Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked. Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! Your thoughts

Since we have briefly interacted and I believe you edit articles in the Balkan region, I thought I would ask for your opinion. I started adding references to the article Treaty of Nis (1739) and ended up at Kingdom of Serbia (1718–1739).
My conundrum is the second paragraph in the article where it states, "The Habsburg Serbian crownland was a period of Golden Age for local Serbs, in which the territorial political structure was basically built up from the very foundations". Which has two citations and no references.
However, according to Hupchick's, The Balkans, page 213, "Although brief Habsburg occupation of Ottoman Serbia (1718-1739) was oppressive and exploitative, it also benefited the Serbs."
Now this hardly sounds like a "Golden Age". Would you happen to know anything about this? Thanks. --Kansas Bear (talk) 03:08, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Translation request

Hi Antidiskriminator, happy New Year. :-) Could I ask you a favour? I'm nominating Icelandic Phallological Museum for Today's Featured Article but would like to increase its score. It's only 5 languages off being a "widely covered" topic. Would you mind translating the stub article at User:Prioryman/Icelandic Phallological Museum summary for the Serbian wiki? Also, do you know anyone who might be able to translate it into other South Slavic languages (e.g. Bosnian, Montenegrin)? Prioryman (talk) 21:32, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Final suggestion

Please don't link Albania to Albania (toponym) and stick to the ratings, whenever your views aren't accepted. If you want to propose a new WP rating for an article take it to the WP's talkpage. Btw your newest article constitutes WP:COPYVIO i.e. you've almost copy/pasted every sentence of the sources, which you've misinterpreted and used them out of context.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 15:13, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Antid. English may not be your mother tongue and you may not have even an intermediate knowledge of the language, but you can't copy quotes and simply rearrange them. As a last effort to "salvage" the article, I'll try to rewrite the copyvios or you can ask for others to rewrite it.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 15:38, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Re: Prompt reply

I've just answered your query, as soon as I had noticed it. Thank you for notifying me explicitly, it might have taken me a few more hours to notice it on the watchlist.

But no thank you on your endless implications of administrator impropriety. Please, stop this behavior because it's disruptive. Not everything people do is aimed against you. If someone doesn't answer your question in two hours, that doesn't mean they're out to get you, it just means they're not watching the talk page. You can see from the number of edits I made in the period that I was working on the article. To think that I was just intentionally ignoring you is an assumption of bad faith. If you think I would do that, particularly after having been an administrator for so many years now, and particularly after the two of us have had several run-ins in the last couple of weeks, that tells me in the best-case scenario that you are horribly misled and you really need to stop making assumptions, and in the worst-case scenario that you are using Wikipedia just as a vehicle for flamewars.

Please take a step back and try to understand that when several people tell you you're doing this wrong, it's plain old unlikely that you're doing this right. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 09:44, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Did you know?

That you can use Google books to find reliable anglophone sources instead of continuously employing questionable domestic sources that are 1) controversial to other involved parties and 2) difficult to corroborate. Look what I for example found by a simple Google books search relating to the Sanjak of Novi Pazar: Historically, Sanjak was a constituent part of Bosnia and Hercegovina. It had a special autonomous status until 1878, when it was separated from Bosnia and Hercegovina. It existed as an independent political territory until 1912 but was subsequently occupied by Serbia and Montenegro after the Balkan wars. During this period 40.000 Muslims were expelled by Serbian authorities... - Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization: Yearbook. Kluwer Law International, 1996, p. 112 [9]. I think a large portion of the "Sanjak articles" will require a substantial source revision, including the presented source would be a good start. Don't forget, reliable sources is a great first step towards NPOV. Praxis Icosahedron (talk) 16:36, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, and certainly you are the source we should follow rather than scholarly works published on Google Books. Please continue to tell me how all the sources (which do not fit your viewpoint) are wrong. Domestic Balkan sources have earned notoriety for specific reasons, not least the academic propaganda preceding the Yugoslav wars and which continue to this this day, and they will as such remain an isolated category in the international academia for a long while. However, it is not difficult to understand why you would prefer e.g. SANU, let's not play silly shall we? The traditional Serb nationalist attempt is to cut any Bosnian/Bosniak continuity into as many small tiny pieces as possible to the point that Bosnia has been reinvented every 20 years or so. And don't forget, Be cautious with major changes: consider discussing them first. With large proposed deletions or replacements, it may be best to suggest changes in a discussion, to prevent edit warring and disillusioning either other editors or yourself (if your hard work is rejected by others). . Thank you for the barnstar, but I prefer to remove it. Praxis Icosahedron (talk) 17:20, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Your false accusations at my talk page and that of the Sanjak of Bosnia are offensive. Your edits were largely preserved, and did not include any citations to start with (i.e. they may be easily disputed, modified, or downright deleted). Your riot on the Sanjaks associated with Bosnia and the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia where you are currently in POV hubris over the term Krajiste to prove some fictional Serb influence on early Ottoman Bosnia are unacceptable. Praxis Icosahedron (talk) 17:38, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
It is also quite apparent that source selection can also be POV, you seem to intentionally avoid acclaimed anglophone sources which you turn down in benefit of less qualitative domestic sources which are often based in poor neutrality. Praxis Icosahedron (talk) 17:46, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Warning

Your recent edits on Sanjak of Novi Pazar have introduced unacceptably poor language. It is bad enough that you insert broken English like this [10] in articles. But making a blanket revert back to it after another user has gone to the trouble of correcting your grammar [11][12] is doubly irresponsible, and completely unacceptable.

I know you as a native Serbian speaker probably find it difficult to get the definite articles in English right. Nobody can blame you for making errors with these when you speak or write spontaneously. But what the Wikipedia community can and must demand of you is that after you have written something, you should invest the time to go over your own writing and monitor it for such mistakes. Even if you can't avoid making them, you can find most of them and correct them, with a bit of effort and the help of a grammar book. Nobody is forcing you to write quickly on Wikipedia. Take the time to check what you write. Failure to do so cannot simply be excused because you are a non-native speaker; it is irresponsible laziness.

And before you revert somebody else, you are expected to actually read their diff, and when you notice that part of the diff consists of corrections to your grammar, it is a simple demand of editorial integrity to respect those corrections and not revert them blindly, as you did.

Take this as a warning; if I see you behaving like this again, I'll ask for you to be sanctioned. Fut.Perf. 13:57, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

I think that your comment is unnecessarily harsh. Here is the proof that I am carefully preparing the text related to the subject.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 14:19, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Look, here are a few simple questions for you:
  1. Do you, or do you not, possess enough theoretical understanding of grammar in order to realize, on reflection, that it has to be "the town of Novi Pazar", not "town Novi Pazar", and "the south-western part of the Serbian Despotate" rather than "south-western part of the Serbian Despotate"?
  2. Did you, or did you not, go through your sentences after first writing them down, trying to identify such errors, before you hit "save" on this edit?
  3. Did you, or did not, read the diff of this edit by P.I. carefully, before you decided to blanket-revert it [13]?
  4. Did you, or did you not, notice that P.I. had changed, among other things, your wording of "town Novi Pazar" to "the eponymous town of Novi Pazar"?
  5. Did you, or did you not, spend a moment considering why he might have done so?
  6. Were you, or were you not, aware that you were reintroducing a grammatically inferior version when you hit "undo" on this edit?
Fut.Perf. 14:35, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I did not say you are wrong and I was right. Yes, I made mistake. I was wrong to reintroduce a grammatically inferior version without returning immediately to identify errors and correct them. Everybody makes mistakes, but that does not mean that every mistake deserves harsh comments and warning with sanctions. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 15:05, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Drive-by comment: I see nothing inappropriate in Fut. Perf.'s note--no harsh comments or threat. Sure, everybody makes mistakes, but when those mistakes are corrected, they should be followed by a thank-you note, not a blanket revert. Even if there was something factually incorrect with P.I.'s edit (in relation to your sources), then the thing to do is to correct that, not revert the lot. "Everybody makes mistakes" should pertain to P.I.'s edit even more than to yours. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 17:21, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Can you pass it now? It's getting a bit stale. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:34, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Moneta family, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Scutari (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
