My RfA

Hello Ambuj! Thank you for the confidence shown in me during my recently concluded RfA, which succeeded with a final tally of 77/2/0 . I'm still exploring the new tools, so feel free to tell me of any mistakes I might make. In case you need help with anything, just drop me a message. Happy Diwali

File:Diwalipuja.jpg
Happy Diwali!!!
Known as the "Festival of Lights" in India, Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil. It represents celebration of hope and life, and is an occasion to strengthen relationships. This year, it is celebrated on November 5, 2024. I take this as an occasion to wish you the best in the days to come. May this Diwali invigorate you, bringing you more happiness and content. Happy Diwali!!!

Portal Bangladesh

Hi, I have been thinking about regularly updating the Portal:Bangladesh. So I asked Rama's Arrow for help. As the featured article related to Bangladesh are not many he told me to update it once a week. He also told me to look for your help. So please give me some advice and I have been hoping to get help from you when needed. Thanks.Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 18:04, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for voting and commenting on my RfA last month. In a few months after I graduate, I'll have time to "prepare," (I won't be on Wikibreak next time) and visit xFD everyday. Ambuj, I have unblocked that IP. Let me know if it worked. -- Ganeshk (talk) 13:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Good! I have tagged the IP with SharedIPEDU (a guess). Is that IP an educational institution? -- Ganeshk (talk) 14:07, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
I have tagged the IP with {{SharedIPEDU|IIT Kharagpur}}, which is more apt description. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 14:17, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

thanks!

When I started my second editor review, I had no idea how greatly helpful it would be to me. Here are people from across the world who I've never met or laid eyes upon, taking their personal time to think about me and offer me valuable criticism and advice. And the stuff I've learnt is more helpful in real life than just on Wikipedia. This is an experiment I will never forget. I thank you most sincerely for your kindness, for helping me be a better person. I am very much in your debt. Rama's arrow 15:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume 1, Issue 2 - November 2006

Project News
  • The Performing Community: Thanks to many contributors like you, we're proud to share that our community is the third most performing community. It has more than 50 FAs related to India, to its credit, lagging only behing Wikiproject Biography and WikiProject Military History.
    (Courtesy: Ganeshk at Discussion Board).
  • The Wikipedia 1.0 Assessment statistics for India related articles show there are 51 Featured Articles, 5 Class-A articles, 16 Good Articles, 101 Class-B articles, 167 Start-Class articles and more than 4000 Stubs. There were more than 10000 unassessed articles related to India.
What's New?
Looking forward toward more contributions from you! Happy Editing!!
Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome. It has been weeks and months since the idea of newsletter was mooted among the WikiProject India Community. This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us.
  • This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know.
  • Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.

  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may mention it at WikiProject India Outreach Department.

IIPMPage: Thanks and Will Do

Thanks for the heads up, Ambuj. I'll keep you posted, and contact the Indian admin site too if things get ugly. Deepakshenoy 05:27, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your input!

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Again, thanks for your input on the RfA, and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide for the handbook. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 14:40, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Mee too.. Was looking to feature it after IST attains the status. For now, the article has a heavy Indian bias to it. We should even things out, including the infobox details and the map. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:15, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

There are some points Rama's arrow has raised on PR too. Some inputs from the Chinese notice board might be helpful. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:25, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. Per WP:MOSTM, with the exception of those trademarks with an initial lowercase letter (such as eBay or iPod), we capitalise the first letter of all trademarks. We don't pander to other companies' typographical conventions. For the same reason, our article for the BBC's main television service refers not to BBC ONE or BBC one, but BBC One. Re

Hi Ambuj, regarding this page-name, the halant is already present, and AFAICS, always has been. Are you asking whether it would be better without the halant? That may be more correct from the viewpoint of Kannada (and general Sanskrit) tradition, but if you prefer the name to be written the way it is generally spoken (by Mahajan himself, importantly), perhaps having halants is good as it serves the purpose of phonetic representation. I don't suppose this reply really helps :( Its admirable how many languages you are able to handle....I pride myself on speaking several languages, but you do a lot more! WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
  • As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll be very happy to include them here.
  • Before we sign off, Advance New Year Wishes, everyone.

  • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

Nathu La additions: "Economy" - please see

Please see this and this edits. Especially the one in economy. You may want to re-word the sentences. I thought this economic speculation was needed to increase the comprehensiveness. What do you think? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:53, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi! IMO, no major structural changes are needed. Consult Nichalp once. Then we should go for FAC. Meanwhile, don't forget to promote it to PISA!
Some observations: What are the last two entries under "Notes" doing? I mean they are not specifically cited. If they are not specifically cited, those two can be moved under "References", while rest of the stuffs under "Notes". These is not a must, but IMO can be done.
One more comment, "For Hindus, the pass reduces the journey time to Mansarovar lake from 15 days to two days. The Tibetans on the Indian side can now easily go to Potala Palace in Lhasa to offer prayers." But at the end, "Tourists will not be allowed to cross the border via Nathu La pass till 2012." And also, in the caption of Rumtek's photo, "Pilgrims from Tibet may be able to make a pilgrimage to the Rumtek monastery". So, is there any specific arrangement for pilgrims for the time being (till 2012)? Pilgrims are also tourists, right?
Yet another comment. I've been to Kalimpong and remember being shown by some guide "oi je Nathu La" (There is Nathu La!) The image "The Nathu La Pass as seen from the town of Kalimpong" - are you sure that's Nathu La? I mean which one? There are many such rugged mountains that can be seen from Kalimpong. Well, I just hope someone does not raise this question in FAC :)
With Nichalp around, there should not be any major problems in the FAC. Let's go for it!! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:58, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, if you are done with editing, let's refer to Nichalp. I am leaving a message to him stating the aforementioned points. There is no reason to delay! Another FAC, hurray! :)--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:11, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
Aha! I see. Already left a message. Anyway, no probs. He won't be doing anything before the weekend. Meanwhile, let's see if something more comes up in the peer review. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:21, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello,To mention Ambuj Saxena I don't think that the pass is closed for tourist as I visited it in October, 2005. He have to be sure about it. Go on with the project I am with it. As for the photos I wanna ask u how u managed it. Last time we have to deposit our camera mobiles also. Amartyabag 16:16, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification. I think there is a need to change the infobox, what do u think? Amartyabag 07:06, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
