How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Little help with a interwiki issue

Hi, Amanda. How are you doing? Amanda, we have (what seems to be) a very complex issue at the pt.WP and you might be able to help. We have an active user on pt.WP (Otávio Astor Vaz Costa (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)) who is blocked here for sock puppetry. They were not blocked by a check user, but rather for a sysop on grounds of WP:DUCK. The editor says they are innocent. About a month ago, an IP posted two messages (here and here) in their TP related to a discussion on Meta. The discussion on Meta was about you. I don't know exactly what about was the discussion, because I'm not updated on the discussion matter. As I'm an active user here and on pt.WP, I'm trying to help. I was thinking if you can, eventually, give it a look and give me an honest opinion about it. Thanks in advance.

PS: Please ping me if you ever answer this message. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 00:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. File:Centene Stadium logo.png

Hi Amanda. DQbot reduced this file earlier today, but it's almost certainly too simple to be eligible for copyright protection per c:COM:TOO United States and was most likely uploaded as non-free because the uploader was just trying to be cautious or wasn't aware things like c:COM:TOO. Essentially the same logo can be found on Commons as File:Centene Stadium.jpg, and that's the one currently being used in the article. Whether it's worth converting the local file from non-free to PD might depend on whether someone intends to use it (I guess). It probably doesn't qualify for speedy deletion per either F5 or F8, but it might per F10. Maybe converting the license and then moving it to Commons would be better? -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:34, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: Looks like it has been deleted F5 anyway. I agree it's too simple for copyright. With the existing file, I'm not sure there is much need to restore it, unless you have any specific insight on it's use. -- Amanda (she/her) 01:15, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

UK Parlophone releases

I recently changed the status of File:Stepinsidelove.png, File:It'sforyou.png, and File:Loveoftheloved.png to "PD-ineligible-USonly", citing one FFD discussion about another Parlophone release. Prior revisions of those images, which your bot hid, should be un-hidden/un-deleted. Happy bureaucratship anniversary

Suggestion for User:DeltaQuadBot

Hello Amanda,

I have been seeing accounts containing the numbers 69 and 420, and sometimes, the numbers are mashed together. They have been used to vandalize Wikipedia (examples: [1], [2], [3]). I know that 69 has a sexual meaning and 420 is connected to marijuana use. Due to these numbers' indecent meanings, I think they should be added to your bot account's blacklist. As a result, when these numbers appear alone or mashed up, they should be a red flag for someone who does not intend to positively contribute to Wikipedia. What do you think?

--LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony Fan) 17:44, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I try and keep out of the day to day operation of the blacklist. Please file your request on User talk:AmandaNP/UAA/Blacklist. I think they used to be on there at some point, but I haven't followed the history of the backlist. -- Amanda (she/her) 21:18, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Permanently banned? RandomCanadian seems to be editing

Disruptive posts at Albert Einstein talk page

Recently I encountered several, signed as RandomCanadian at Diff; that user was authoritatively (and repeatedly) sending people through policies about defining cathegories etc, as the answer for removing material from the article, and you can see some pages of HAHAHAHA... I didn't go into technical like that HAHA intentions then, but went to the content of RandomCanadian-signed posts, and it's author's userpage contents.

Permanently globally locked sockpuppet user?

As I looked on the referenced user's talk page, I also saw recent postings, but when I looked into his user page and it's history, I found previous contents removed and a template about sockupuppet and global lock inserted in summer 2021 at Diff. That held till jan 2021, when those banners have ben removed, and previous contents rebuilt, by User:Maxim Diff, which by contents of the Diff and user's page seems to be another stockpuppet, and the same goes for User:Dylanport1 on the next Diffs. See also Special:UserRights/Maxim. Next changes were made by user:Random Canadian again; so what happened to his "permanent global" ban?

Supposedly misleading contents of that user page was also restored several times by (well-intended ) experienced users (that belived it is a wikipedia: Good faith user without checking history): DiffDiff.

The rest of the pattern (both contents and users/IP-s) is interesting. If the block is still legaly in place, it seems he was evading it, and was also creating himself a userpage with a look of a wikipedian in good standing; actually, it may be he has given himself "barnstars from" just the people that opose vandalism, for combating vandalism he is probably causing. Pattern is (somewhat) similar with Zalgo. The IMO misleading contents was also progressively enclosed in more and more layers of colapsing frames, so that it may be not instantly visible to a casual viewer.

I also see a RandomCanadian-signed (or RC-signed looking) comment in Zalgo Archive in discussion about Zalgo's stockpuppets.

Sockpuppet or hijacked user?

The person that published the contents like above (under any user name or IP) doesn't lack brainpower, but sadly seem to lack wisdom. His pattern of intentionally disturbing posts that I have seen on several places makes me conclude: anything published by him (it doesn't seem her) is suspect in my eyes (so far, that I have to think for a moment how far it's true if he wrote that sun rose this morning, not only who "gave him" barnstars and for what).

But some of the contributions under this user name seem constructive (as if there were two different persons using same user name Contributions and e.g. Talk:China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735. Also, the style of the signature is consistently different (I suppose it is set in the profile, so I suppose there are consistently two profiles in use); see at the example above and at Diff (difference in style of signature, area of interest and mode of communication). Is it possible that the account was somehow hijacked by the puppet master? If it was, and until the weak spot misused is closed, discussion on how should proceed by some other channel. --Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 10:45, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Marjan Tomki SI: RandomCanadian is not blocked. If I sign as Barack Hussein Obama, do you believe I'm Obama? tgeorgescu (talk) 11:01, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to accuse User:Maxim of being a sockpuppet (and worse, one that uses his admin tools to unblock other socks), then you should head to WP:SPI or mail your evidence to ArbCom. However, it would be a lot wiser to retract these claims as it is extremely unlikely to be correct, and without evidence is a severe personal attack. RandomCanadian was a sockpuppet, he appealed to ArbCom, and they accepted his appeal and allowed him to edit as RandomCanadian. Unless there are issues with his editing since then, the older history is quite clear but no longer of concern. Fram (talk) 11:04, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've had no previous interaction with the above user, so I have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. And I was unblocked (mostly because the original block was incorrect) and cleared of any wrongdoing (I'm not going to quote private emails between me and Arbcom - short story, I am not and never was a sock). @Fram: I don't know if the above missed their appointment for April Fools or something. On the other hand, someone making a post like the above immediately triggers my suspicion meter, but I'd have no clue here either as to what might be behind this. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 13:38, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
RandomCanadian, I only went by your block/unblock log, I haven't looked into it into detail. I'm glad to hear that the block was in error, but even if it had been justified, it wouldn't warrant the above out of the blue claims is what I wanted to say. Fram (talk) 15:14, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RandomCanadian, Fram, and Tgeorgescu: Actually, I am glad to be found April fool in this case. My intention was not to accuse, but to make somebody competent and with authority check things.
A bit on background: My job before retirement - for several decades - had included preventing effects of malware. That conditioned me to automaticaly jump to conclusions and immedially act preventively to minimize damage, but not assign responsibility unless/until proven. And speed was almost always critical. And I was good at that (which included some selective paranoia, and a lot of luck).
In this case I immediately tried to bring the possible problem to attention of a competent person, who dealed with the problem before, in this case on Amanda's talk page.
What I saw: a situation, where the user who was blocked indefinitely and globaly, and had been found used as sockpuppet, was active again.
To let know people who ridicule all conspiracy theroists, that not every story like this is a hoax: I was also aware (but not involved in solving) of a similar problem in Croatia that took a lot of time and effort - it seems to have taken about ten years to solve - see RfC from March 2010 and Wikimedia bans admin of Wikipedia Croatia for pushing radical right agendas

This group had de-facto control of the website between 2011 and 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation said in a report published earlier this month.

Because of that background I needed somebody competent to investigate it. I also thought that person needed to see what gave me the idea that there is a possible problem, and what would mean if sockpuppet really could revert the lock without been detected (so the Diffs above, and hasty text).
Where I was right: I knew I was not competent here to do it here properly.
Where I was wrong
  • I missed, where to look to see the block/lock logs; because of that I didn's see RandomCanadian's block was released by decision of ArbCom, as reminded by Fram.
Consequently:
  • RandomCanadian is not a sockpuppet
  • RandomCanadian didn't evade the ban: lock was in place for about half a year, but was released by ArbCom authorisation
  • Maxim didn't restore the lock, as I thought; he just returned userpage to previous state after RandomCanadian's successfull appeal to ArbCom
  • Lock was administered - locking and unlocking - separately (also for en:WP and global)
What I see as my main blunders
  • Being sloppy checking data, including finding who administered locks (at en:WP and at Meta, locking and unlocking), and at who actually did the vandalism at Einstein talk page in the time frame I looked in (I now found IP-s used in the time interval I observed belonged to LA area school IP provider), that RandomCanadian only took barnstars from his talk page and put them to user page (they were not visible at a glance on talk page because RandomCanadian reverted them) and I didn't look well enough and missed that - and more of negligence and hastiness like that).
  • Letting my old automatic professional paranoia overcome WP:AGF - that's something that now I see I'll have to be permanently and consciously vigilant about.
  • I Might easily have caused pain and damage to RandomCanadian (and possibly several others I mentioned). I'm lucky RandomCanadian has taken me as a fool instead.
I still don't like removing well sourced data from articles just because most of geneal public is not interested in them (not notable to them), because they supposedly clutter the articles, or removal of such without citation needed template first, but that's for discussion for other times and places, but how I came from that to hypothesing RandomCanadian a confirmed stockpuppet evading lock is my blunder par excellence, and that I think needed to be made clear here.
I just hope Amanda doesn't clear this whole section from her talk page by reverting relevant set of changes, like RandomCanadian did in his talk page which made me miss things I shouldn't miss... Somebody could learn from my mistakes (besides me). And this concludes my before April first April fool story.--Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 01:46, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AmandaNP,

One of my daily tasks is rescaling files that DeltaQuadBot tags and places in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old needing human review which it usually does daily at 02:00 UTC. But it hasn't done this since April 8th so I thought I'd inquire if there was a problem with the bot, maybe it needs a tweak or something. It's behavior is very regular and predictable so it's unusual that there haven't been any files tagged in two days.

Any way, I hope you are well and had a pleasant weekend. Thanks for any help you can provide! Liz Read! Talk! 02:58, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like everything is back to normal! At least, this is not a high profile CSD category. I only started taking care of it nightly months ago because it seemed like no admins even noticed the category and the number of files it contained had really grown to a high number. Thanks for your tech help, Amanda! Liz Read! Talk! 02:46, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Even if you did tell me what happened I probably would't know what it meant. Bots are a hazy mystery to me. Seems fine now though. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:16, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Something very weird is going there, that could be related to why the bot is not removing blocked users. See my comments at Wikipedia talk:Username policy#weird bug. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:38, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Beeblebrox: The issue with not removing blocked was a scripting issue, I never updated the regular task command. It works now. That said, I'm seeing everything perfectly with marked blocked, so i'm not sure the issue there. -- Amanda (she/her) 19:10, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Following a discussion at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard, the minimum activity requirements for bureaucrats have been updated to also include the the recently updated minimum editing requirements for administrators (i.e. at least 100 edits every 5 years). Hi AmandaNP, Ham2703 is evading their block as IP 190.219.168.53. (I bring this to you as you are the most recent CU to check this case and the proper venue for reporting IP socking on en.wiki is unclear to me--various admin forums are apt to say a CU is needed and SPI is apt to say CUs cannot connect IPs to users.) As I a) am not an en.wiki CU and b) have not run a CU, the below is entirely public information:

Troublesome also is that Ham2703 appears to be using Lord Cornwallis to assist their evasion (e.g., confirmed sock Latyelcop uploads File:Lisa Golm in The Hoodlum (1951).jpg, IP 190.140.147.233 asks Lord Cornwallis to create Lisa Golm, which is done; confirmed sock Kensoup uploads File:George Walcott in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg, IP 190.219.168.53 asks Lord Cornwallis to create George Walcott.) If necessary, I can dig out a WMF Office quote that assistance of a evasion is sanctionable. Could you look into addressing this, including range block(s) if appropriate? Also pinging @Ponyo: and @RoySmith: as admins/CUs who've worked on this case/may be familiar with this user. Эlcobbola talk 16:04, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting unblock so that I can edit from my phone

Apparently a wide range of addresses were blocked, but it only affects my phone. I can edit just fine from any computer. Is there a way to get my phone unblocked? I would love to be able to edit from it, especially on long trips. Fortunaa (talk) 18:14, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can't start to form a response without knowing the IP that is affected, so I can look at the block. -- Amanda (she/her) 18:34, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to mention that the phone is Google Fi, which operates like Android, but is neither Android nor iPhone. Not sure if that's relevant, but it's a global phone (works exactly the same in any country) and so I somewhat imagine abuse could have come from these phones. https://fi.google.com/about/ Fortunaa (talk) 01:11, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Both of those IPs are locally assigned IPs, meaning they don't go on the internet. Using a service like What is my ip address should help. You can email it to me to if you don't want people knowing. -- Amanda (she/her) 02:33, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Weirdly, the block isn't happening now. For some reason I'm able to edit. I'll come back to you if it starts showing that notice again. Very strange, because the notice was consistent for a long time. Fortunaa (talk) 13:24, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As long as you are following the rules like WP:SOCK and all, I don't see why not. That being said, I also can't give permission for you to create an account, it's just a matter of following the rules. -- Amanda (she/her) 20:03, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

socky socky

Hi Amanda--I can use your help. I just dropped a dozen (or tw?) CU blocks on an LTA who is obsessed with categories (particularly for LGBT matter) and taxonomy. I've blocked them before, and you have blocked them globally. I wonder if we shouldn't have an SPI, and what this sock's history is. You can see the blocks in my history--they are related to User:TARMMPAN4R7D, one I blocked a while ago and whom I reference in the log, but I'm sure they go back farther. Also, I suppose it would be good if there were global blocks on all of them, right? I'd get started on the SPI paperwork and all that, but perhaps you know more than I, and if you do that would save me some work. Also, I gotta run! DeltaQuadBot's four revdels on File:Brandon Bay Logo.svg

Hi!

I'm currently going through files relating to Canadian campaign logos that appear to be underneath the threshold of originality in the United States. The file appears to be well under the threshold of originality in the United States—it is a simple text logo that is accentuated by a single maple leaf that is a public domain symbol in Canada and the United States—and the file does not require a fair use justification on the English Wikipedia because the file is not copyrightable in the United States. In particular, previous relevant cases in the United States have resulted in refusal of registration for logos that are similar in their relative lack of originality. This includes the rejection of registration for three logos for the San Francisco Shock, which found that the logos were predictable combinations of a few uncopyrightable elements and do not feature the necessary variety and composition of elements to qualify for registration.

In light of the above, I've changed the licensing on the file page to reflect that the logo is in the public domain (at least within the United States). However, because the file was previously marked as non-free, previous versions of the file appear to have been deleted by DeltaQuadBot (1 2 3 4).

Since the basis for revision deletion (WP:RD1 and/or WP:RD5) does not clearly apply to a relevant image in the public domain, would you please reverse these four revision deletions made by your bot?

New Musée Annam sock?

Hi. I noticed you recently globally locked User:Levanven60 as a likely sock of Musée Annam/Unserefahne. A new user, User:Betabum, made a revert restoring Levanven60's edit on the Peacock Princess article. It's suspicious, but this alone doesn't seem like sufficient evidence for a CU request at SPI, and I'm not familiar with the LTA case and the user's other editing patterns. Could you take a look at their contributions and recommend a course of action? --Paul_012 (talk) 01:34, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that they are related. None the less, if you can find enough behavior for an admin to look and block, SPI would likely be the best place. -- Amanda (she/her) 15:00, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I took another look and found another reversion that seemed too deliberate to be a coincidence, so I've started an SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Unserefahne. --Paul_012 (talk) 20:19, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Large amount of FPs regarding usernames with cyrillic characters (or any username with a lot of non-latin characters)

Hello Amanda! I notice that your bot will often report users who have cyrillic characters in their username to WP:UAA on the basis that it contains special characters. Unfortunately most of the time these appear to be false positives as they are usually just real names written in the cyrillic alphabet. WOuld it be possible to make it so the bot reports fewer false positive cyrillic usernames (and really any username with non-latin characters in it) without causing a bunch of false negatives? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:44, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help regarding an unblock request

Hi, Amanda. I have come here to ask you to look into an unblock request at UTRS, relating to a CU IP range block of yours. However, I see that you have recently been editing infrequently, so I may ask another CU to look at it. If you do feel like looking into it, though, the unblock request is from Shyjayb, and the IP block appears to be on he range 2607:FB90:0:0:0:0:0:0/32. If so, there are both local an global blocks, but both are anon-only, so I don't understand the unblock request. JBW (talk) 17:16, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That rangeblock is anon. only and should not be ever affecting logged in users at all. There isn't even a successful login attempt recorded in CU. So it would seem the person is trying to edit logged out. The only problem now is that they have shared their password, the account is compromised and has to be locked. -- Amanda (she/her) 17:55, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
