Hey, I'm trying to get a discussion started on the title of this article. I see you've been involved in discussion of the definition before, and might be interested in putting a case for either side forward on the use of a more generic term. The discussion is on the talk page, and is regarding the topic of closed source software, not the validity of the term proprietary software. - Jimmi Hugh (talk) 17:51, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for protection

[edit]

The article for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been repeatedly vandalized in the past 24 or so hours, and I think it would be wise to semi-protect the page. Thanks for considering it. --Justin Herbert (talk) 01:59, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

iPhone OS subsection in Mac OS X article?

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you deleted the section I added to the Mac OS X about the iPhone OS. Is there a Wikipedia policy about not copying content from other Wikipedia articles? And do you think there should not be a section about the iPhone OS in the Mac OS X article? I also requested input on this issue on Talk:Mac_OS_X#iPhone_OS_subsection_in_Versions.3F. Thanks. Baroness Cox

[edit]

I request your assistance.

Baroness Cox has not been involved with Christian Solidarity Worldwide since 2003. She successfully sued the Evening Standard for the false article that has now been referenced on her page. It is a subjective statement to say the film was anti-Islamic. Check out www.worldcommittee on Disability, all of her disability work has been removed. This is libel!!!

The opening paragraph should read as it has since the origins of the page:

Caroline Ann McNeill Love Cox, Baroness Cox FRCN (born 6 July 1937) is a cross-bench member of the British House of Lords, and campaigner for many humanitarian causes and issues relating to disability. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CofJ (talk • contribs) 18:22, 18 February 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by CofJ (talkcontribs)

MacbookPro

[edit]

Well the fact is that the macbook pro does get insanely hot and it deserves to be mentioned, you can have whole artilces for episodes with so much infomation yet no references, and they get all clear, yet this section doesn't. It's hard to find "reliable" third party resouces that mention this issue, have a look, but that doesn't make the MacbookPro any less hot.IAmTheCoinMan (talk) 11:06, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit to Mach (kernel)

[edit]

Hi, about this edit.

I think the source you are pointing to says that you need the license for the non-kernel parts of the system. Not the kernel source itself. AlistairMcMillan (talk) 18:37, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to change it as you see fit; I just happened to be passing through. -- Beland (talk) 01:28, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
BTW The expand template is supposed to be used on articles, not talk pages. AlistairMcMillan (talk) 18:46, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's not what Template talk:Expand says. Some people find them too ugly/long-term to put in articles themselves, though it's higher visibility that way, which I think is useful. I put it on the talk page to highlight the precise section with the expansion request, so there's no confusion about what's being requested. -- Beland (talk) 01:28, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of dock application

[edit]

Hi, sorry but I've put back the list of dock applications. All of them are notable and, as a matter of fact, most of them already have an article on Wikipedia. If you feel this is not the place for a list, feel free to move it to somewhere else but please don't delete it. Thanks. Laurent (talk) 18:37, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please, do not delete entries from this list without a good reason. The fact that they do not have an article on Wikipedia doesn't mean they shouldn't appear in the list. Also, the criteria for a list and for an article are not the same (See Wikipedia:Lists_(stand-alone_lists)#Lead_and_selection_criteria). I've also added a disclaimer to the list - I'm the author of Appetizer and although it doesn't have an article (yet), it has been reviewed in several notable websites and magazines, and I can provide the ref if necessary. Thanks. Laurent (talk) 14:31, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So you are deleting my changes based on a COI criteria only? Did you check at all if the apps you've deleted are notable? As far as I know, it is not recommended to create articles with which you have a conflict of interest however it's not forbidden. Additionnally, one of the reaons I write about dock application is because I've created one, researched the topic, discussed it with users and got their feedback, and therefore know more about the subject than most people. Additionnally, right now, without looking much, I can find a dozen of articles who are known to have COI issues and yet remain on Wikipedia. Are you going to delete them all and block their authors? Thanks. Laurent (talk) 08:41, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for removing that - it was added by a real jerk who's currently got about 4 firefighters (sane editors) trying to get him to stop flaming on the talk page. I was doubtful of it, but left it in the humor him. (He did come up with a legitimate reference to JD Power.) So if you want to get involved on Talk:iPhone, it would be much appreciated. Proposed deletion of HIV Prevention Act of 1997

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article HIV Prevention Act of 1997, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable bill that never became law

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. —S Marshall Talk/Cont 19:04, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Camp Kawanhee for Boys & Julio Iglesias Jr.

[edit]

Yes.. thousands of kids go to summer camp each year. But how many world famous entertainers, singers, actors, etc go to summer camp each year. Please undo your removal of the Camp Kawanhee For Boys reference in the Julio Iglesias Jr. page. It is a noteworthy fact that he attended this summer camp. It would be a non-noteworthy fact if there were a reference to you and your summer camp experience because you are not a famous and influential person. Furthermore, expanding on the bio of famous individuals only adds to the pool of information from which we draw, if we quash that information then where do we end. For example, millions of kids go to college every year so should we delete those references too???

By the way, I attended camp with these kids during those years and you can call the camp any time to confirm their attendance.--You Talkin' to Me??? (talk) 15:47, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

iTunes, limitations in ID3 support

[edit]

I reverted your removal of text regarding ID3 support. The referenced forum post provides further details on the topic and while doing so refers to credible sources to substantiate its point. The source is therefor reliable. Neither implementing the post's complete content into Wikipedia nor referencing the ID3v2.x standard definitions without the further explanation would be in the interest of Wikipedia users. The issue described is a verifiable one and the referenced article provides both explanation and credible sources of information.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Am windows95 taskbar.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Am windows95 taskbar.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Slashdot

[edit]

I can't resist pointing out that, as much as Slashdot whines about the Wikipedia, Wikipedia has a much higher Alexa ranking than Slashdot. The complaints boil down to "My God. Wikipedia is a place for readers, not writers." The fact that Wikipedia is not spam-filled is a great testament to the users and administrators able to keep a Alexa top 10 site useful with relevant content. MaraDNS and notability

[edit]

Just letting you know (since you have mentioned AFDing MaraDNS) that we’ve gone to some effort to establish notability with MaraDNS, and have added three reliable, notable, third-party sources to the article. Do you feel these sources establish MaraDNS as being notable (WP:N and all that)? Samboy (talk) 02:33, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Should you feel the sources in the MaraDNS article do not establish notability, I found a number of mentions of MaraDNS in peer-reviewed articles, including PhD dissertations, which I have added to Talk:MaraDNS. I was very flattered and honored, when researching MaraDNS’ notability, to see my program discussed in numerous peer-reviewed publications and praised in O’Reilly books. Samboy (talk) 04:06, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What edits have I made this year (2009) to MaraDNS that violate the WP:COI policy? Please be aware that Wikipedia:COI#Non-controversial_edits points out I can be “Adding citations, especially when another editor has requested them” and “Deleting content that violates Wikipedia's biography of living persons policy.” Of this six edits I have done this year, one was to remove WP:BLP-violating material and the other five (edit 1 edit 2 edit 3 edit 4 edit 5) were to add citations and did not not change in any way the text of the article, and were done only after they were requested by another editor. I have discussed all of these edits on the talk page and no other editors have disagreed with my edits.
I will add a wikipedian-bio template to the article’s talk page so other editors can be aware of these concerns. Samboy (talk) 14:42, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Original Research?

[edit]

Forgive my ignorance, but how would original research conducted by myself be any different to original research conducted by, and subsequently published by a website? Just what is considered COI or spam????

[edit]

Before deleting my edit, please explain why my addition is considered a conflict of interest or spam? I have been a user of Ancestral Quest for several years, purchasing one of its earlier versions, and buying into each subsequent release since. I've been actively involved in genealogy for over 30 years, have used other software programs, and consider AQ one of the better ones on the market.

A few days ago I sent the people at AQ an email asking them why AQ is not included in Wikipedia's article "Comparison of Genealogy Software." A couple of days later I got a reply from Gaylon Findlay, president of AQ, that he added it, but it got removed because of a COI. So, I decided that because I'm merely a "user" of the program, and not having any COI, I should be able to add it myself. I thought that this was a wiki, and anyone could add or edit valid information!!!! Please explain. Bwayment (talk) 19:57, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

iPhone Limitations

[edit]

Limitations should be clearly stated; not dodgingly sprinkled. Some of this information is not already included and is necessary for a complete and unbiased description. For example, the photography issue you are referring to does not make any mention of its limitations with "image texting," and as such, is misleading. The subject of the iPhone's limitations are noteworthy and should not be dodged. --NayadethFigueroa (talk) 05:30, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I prefer to maintain all communication within Wiki; much more practical. Regarding sending images as text with a first or second generation iPhone, it is NOT possible. I know this from personal experience because I own one. Perhaps it is possible in the newest version, but the article related to the iPhone in general. As such, your comment is incorrect. Happy trails! --NayadethFigueroa (talk) 05:44, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

iPod Classic "hardware issues"

[edit]

Alastair, would you accept this as a source that Apple has admitted there are issues between iPod Classics and iTunes 9? I find it odd that many, many users are reporting issues between iPod Classics and iTunes 9, and yet it can't be mentioned on the Wikipedia page simply because the complaints occur on an anonymous forum (albeit one maintained by Apple). In my opinion, Wikipedia's standards are flawed: there should be some consideration given for overwhelming anecdotal evidence; at least editors should be able to mention that overwhelming anecdotal evidence exists. I'm curious: how would you explain the ancedotal evidence of so many users who are experiences conflicts between iPod Classics and iTunes 9? MikeEcho2009 (talk) 20:58, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss on Talk:IPod Classic. AlistairMcMillan (talk) 21:27, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article WAP (Software Engineering) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:N; a vanity definition article.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — flamingspinach | (talk) 13:31, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
