Administrators' newsletter – August 2019
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following a request for comment, the page Wikipedia:Office actions has been changed from a policy page to an information page.
- A request for comment (permalink) is in progress regarding the administrator inactivity policy.
- Editors may now use the template {{Ds/aware}} to indicate that they are aware that discretionary sanctions are in force for a topic area, so it is unnecessary to alert them.
- Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
- The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.
Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Hi Masumrezarock100, You recently commented on Wikipedia:Files_for_upload#Update_for_Seal_of_Washoe_County,_Nevada, Would you mind if I overwrite the seal as as can be seen here it's more used than their '07 one,
I thought it'd be rude to just upload without asking you so thought I'd ask before overwriting,
FWIW a few American articles have seals although admittedly I don't really know what purpose they serve but meh,
Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:11, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

French to English Translation
Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate your time. I think the best option is for me to go with a certified editor/host who can possibly translate the French page for me. I have not yet figured how to continue a conversation on a talk page so I am sorry for the new thread. Thank you again. (PoojaCucumber (talk) 15:14, 29 July 2019 (UTC)) PoojaCucumber
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 August. It will be on all wikis from 8 August (calendar).
Problems
- A change in RelatedArticles extension accidentally enabled it for everyone, not just for mobile users. This has been fixed. [1][2]
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 7 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Today everyone can see IP addresses if someone edits without an account. In the future this could be more hidden. This is to protect unregistered editors so fewer can see their IP address. This would only happen after we make sure the tools for vandal fighting can still be effective. You can read more and comment.

Vespers of 1640
Selva morale ... is known as the Vespers of 1640 by whom? It's a great collection of much much more than vespers, - looks misleading to me, and I'd drop it altogether. It could be mentioned somewhere in the text, under legacy (which needs to come eventually). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:13, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Now that you mentioned it, it does look misleading. I removed the text, but kept the link because I think it's related to the article. Masum Reza📞 14:19, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Supreme Wiki-service.
The GNU Barnstar | ||
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this barnstar in recognition of your uncanny sense of timing in replacing the non-PD cover of A Different Pond with a PD version just as I had started writing an explanation to the unfortunate, but now fortunate, nominator as to why they couldn't use it. Supreme Wiki-service - thank you. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:35, 7 August 2019 (UTC) |
- Hello Gog the Mild, Thanks for the barnstar and for your kind words. It means a lot to me that my contributions are appreciated by other editors. :) But I'd like to say that I didn't replace the non-PD cover with a PD version. The previous book cover was non-free and it was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. It wasn't certainly an "Own work ". So I nominated the copyrighted file for speedy deletion there. I uploaded another widely used cover here with appropriate fair use rationale as I couldn't find any free replacement. Masum Reza📞 22:59, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Now you are baffling a poor, simple, content-creating editor with Wiki-jargon. Having read that twice, it still seems the semantic equivalent of what I said. You see why I am so happy that you stepped in. (Actually, I kind of understand, and that's what I was alluding to in my clearly over-simplistic message.) In any event, I am sure that your work is much appreciated; it's just that most editor's forget to tell you so. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:10, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Natsuo moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Natsuo, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. PATH SLOPU 12:49, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Path slopu: Wait. It's a disambiguation (name index) page, that's why I didn't add any sources. It's like Itsuki. It's just a list. It doesn't need any sources. Would you mind self-reverting? Masum Reza📞 12:53, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi greetings, sorry for the inappropriate move. I agree with you. I'll try to self revert it after the original page get deleted ( we can't perform a move when that page exist. August 2019
Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:17, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: Thanks for informing me. What edit are you referring to? I usually give edit summary when making non-minor changes to articles. If you are talking about my edits to talk pages, I have to say that I don't usually give edit summary when replying because I see no point. Masum Reza📞 00:41, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- This is a classic example of why a ES is necessary. Not using edit summjaries is just lazy and unhelpful. That's why we have the template message above. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:35, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: I admit that I am lazy, lazier than anyone else. The diff you mentioned is of a reply. What or what kind of edit summary I should use? It would be helpful if you tell me. To be honest, flow talk pages are much better in my opinion since it doesn't have a field to write down an edit summary. Masum Reza📞 01:42, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- Where it's helpful is where people are working from their watchlists or from page histories. It saves having to load the page to find out what the edit was about. A quick glance at this may give you an idea. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:15, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- I see. I don't usually edit via computer and when I do, I use WP:WIKI+. The source editor on mobile doesn't remind you to give an edit summary nor Wiki+. I will try to give edit summary from now on. Masum Reza📞 05:03, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

- @Kudpung: I admit that I am lazy, lazier than anyone else. The diff you mentioned is of a reply. What or what kind of edit summary I should use? It would be helpful if you tell me. - This is a classic example of why a ES is necessary. Not using edit summjaries is just lazy and unhelpful. That's why we have the template message above. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:35, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.
Problems
- Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You can read more to see how to fix the filters.
- Only six accounts can be created from one IP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again. [6]
Changes later this week
- Only a limited number of accounts can be created from one IP address. An IP address can be whitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not show CAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday. [7]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 August. It will be on all wikis from 22 August (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 21 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- There is an RFC about creating a new global user group with the right to edit abuse filters. This will be used to fix broken filters and make sure all filters will still work when software changes happen. You can read more and comment.
Special:Contributions/newbies
will no longer be working. This is because of performance reasons. It showed edits by new accounts. You can see this in the recent changes feed instead. [8]

Using OOUI themes Apex and WikimediaUI together
Hey, I saw your question on IRC earlier about OOUI themes. Unfortunately it is not possible to have widgets using both themes on a single page at the same time – the CSS required for the other theme is not loaded at all, and if you were to load it, they would conflict (styles for both themes would apply together). The only way to use a different theme is to switch to a different MediaWiki skin in your preferences (Apex is used by MonoBook, and WikimediaUI by all other skins). Sorry :( Matma Rex talk 15:27, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Many thanks for the edit summary, I've gone ahead and added the FFU template to file talkpages of all accepted files,
That'll teach me for not reading the page!,
Anyway thanks again, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 22:23, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- In regards to this - I don't mind adding FFU templates (as required) but I'm not going to be adding all Wikiproject templates ,,,, You're more than welcome to add these yourself but as per FFU there is no requirement to add these - I used to close AFDs regularly many moons ago but was never expected to add any Wikiproject templates.... same applies here, Thanks. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 22:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Thanks for doing adding ffu templates. :) Adding WikiProject banners to the talk pages, is not a requirement, but it is helpful when someone lists the file for discussion on FFD. AAbot will include the file name in WikiProjects' article alerts page and it will attract more editors to the discussion. Also when you upload a file on Commons, try to include a permanent link to the FFU page, like I did here since you are uploading the file on someone else's behalf. It is helpful for finding the upload requester. Again, it's also not required. Masum Reza📞 22:44, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- No worries :), I just wish I read the page in the first place instead of being a smart ass and thinking I know all lol,
- Ah thanks for that I'll try to do that in future, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 22:46, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 5
Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!
Progress was made. True story.
I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the grant-funded portion is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's a report.
What's new from the past two months:
A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:
- Fixed various bugs, some of which even weren't for stuff I'd just broken two patches previously.
- Resolved sundry compatibility issues for other extensions, templates onwiki, whatever, largely by removing dumb crap from the css.
- Implemented some shiny new features you'll probably hate or just never use or actually see, like click-toggled dropdowns, icons everywhere, and options to select a default layout or set an image for the site header wordmark.
- Brought the total number of open tasks on the Timeless workboard down to 70.
We also wound up with:
- Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame T181242.) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
- An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting will happen at some point) are still pretty far off on the horizon. Um.
- Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.
And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you want me to keep trying to send these out?
